La Liga champions Barcelona have announced that striker David Villa is set to join Atletico Madrid. Barca’s official website has revealed that the two sides have agreed a deal for the striker, with Atletico signing the Spanish international at a bargain price of €5.1 million if the deal reaches its maximum after all clauses. Villa could make his competitive debut against his former club as the two sides are set to meet in the Spanish Super Cup. The announcement puts an end to rumors about Villa’s future, with Spanish newspapers most recently linking him with Manchester United in a swap deal involving Wayne Rooney. The striker had also been linked with a move to Tottenham earlier this summer, but all transfer talk was delayed due to the Confederations Cup. Villa’s arrival at Atletico Madrid will be greeted by fans of the club following the departure of Falcao. After moving to French side Monaco, Falcao left a gaping hole at Atletico following some extraordinary goalscoring seasons by the Colombian. For Barcelona to receive the maximum transfer fee for the striker, he’ll have to remain at Atletico Madrid for three full seasons.
