Gustavo Ayón had another double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds but Mexico’s chances of qualifying for the FIBA World Cup took a hit Thursday with an 89-67 loss to Canada in the opening game of the second round of the FIBA Americas Championship. Mexico entered tied for third with Canada in points. With four teams qualifying for Spain Mexico is in a better position than it would have been if it had lost to a team ranked below it. Still they’ll probably need to win two of their final three to ensure a spot in the World Cup which would still be remarkable considering they were a replacement team for suspended Panama. Mexico is now 3-2 overall in qualifying. Pero Antić is playing for his home country of Macedonia in the EuroBasket championship where six teams qualify for Spain. They lost 81-80 to Montenegro Wednesday and play Lithuania later tonight.
