Barcelona have made an official £10 million bid for Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen, with talks currently ongoing between the two clubs despite competing interest from Manchester United. Vermaelen had already agreed a deal in principle to join Louis van Gaal at United but Arsenal are reluctant to lose such a versatile player - even if he is not now among their first-choice centre-backs - especially to one of their main Premier League rivals. High-level talks are being held with Barcelona and, providing Vermaelen agrees and a similar fee can be achieved, Arsenal's obvious preference would be to sell him abroad rather than strengthen United. That is what Arsene Wenger confirmed at his press conference this lunchtime ahead of Sunday's Community Shield contest. "Have we received bids? Yes. I can't tell you who from but you will know very soon," Wenger said. "Are Manchester United one of the teams to have made an offer? I think they could be in the group.
