The Astros’s experiment with veteran Rick Ankiel could be over. The team designated the outfielder for assignment along with outfielder Fernando Martinez and sent infielder Brandon Laird back to Oklahoma City. The team is bringing up outfielder Trevor Crowe and infielder/outfielder Jimmy Paredes from Oklahoma City and activating outfielder J.D. Martinez from the disabled list. All three will be available for Tuesday’s game against Anaheim at Minute Maid Park. For the Astros this season, Ankiel hit .194 in 25 games with five home runs and 11 RBI, Laird hit .200 in 11 games with two homers and five RBI and Fernando Martinez hit .182 with a homer and three RBI in 11 games. J.D. Martinez, 25, who had been on the DL since April 20 due to a right knee sprain, hit .300 in five games while on a rehab assignment at Corpus Christi (AA) with a home run, five RBI and a .550 slugging pct. He appeared in 14 games (12 starts) for the Astros prior to going on the DL.
