Andy Pettitte threw a 55-pitch simulated game, and declared afterward, "I'm ready. I want to get back out there and compete." The 40-year-old left-hander, who has not pitched since June 27 when he took a line drive off his left ankle, has now thrown three of these games, working his pitch count up with each outing and adding elements of fielding to the workout to prove the ankle is strong. While manager Joe Girardi said he would have to meet with the medical staff to determine when Pettitte is ready, there seems to be reason to believe he could be starting Tuesday.
