Scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency for the first time in his career this summer, Alex Ovechkin said Tuesday he's confident he'll reach a contract extension with the Washington Capitals in the near future.

Ovechkin spent this season playing out the last of 13-year, $124 million contract signed with the Capitals in 2008.  The 35-year-old, who was selected first overall by Washington in the 2004 NHL Draft, is representing himself in contract talks.

“I’m confident. Obviously, we still have time. Obviously, I want to finish my career here," Ovechkin said. "I’m pretty sure we will get something done soon.”
