Three weeks ago the Orioles announced that pitching coach Rick Adair had taken a leave of absence to handle a personal matter. On Friday manager Buck Showalter had lunch with Adair who was in town to clean out his apartment. Showalter said that Adair was heading to Birmingham Ala. to be with his terminally ill father. Bill Castro moved from bullpen coach to handle Adair’s duties and Scott McGregor was brought in to work in the bullpen. Showalter declined to say if Adair would be back this year or whether he’ll be the team’s pitching coach in 2014. “I think everything else becomes academic until that situation is taken care of in his mind and his family’s mind” Showalter said. “I think it’s something that takes such precedence over anything we’re doing; those are discussions for another day another time in my mind. We live in a kind of cold world sometimes. It’s a reminder of what’s really important in my mind.”
