The Week 8 schedule didn't look overly enthralling at first glance, but Saturday's action reminded us why it's foolish to doubt the craziness of college football.

Despite there being no matchups between ranked teams, a number of surprises made for exceptional viewing across the afternoon window.

Here are the five biggest surprises from the day.

Illinois-Penn State goes to 9 overtimes

History was made Saturday in Happy Valley as Illinois and No. 7 Penn Stateplayed the first NCAA football game to go to nine overtime periods. Somehow, the contest stayed under the betting total of 45.5 points despite all the extra action.

The Big Ten contest was certainly not easy on the eyes, with the overtime periods featuring some very poor execution. Based on the NCAA's new rule, the teams engaged in a two-point conversion competition beginning with the third overtime, but they combined for eight straight missed conversions. Finally, the Fighting Illini ended the slog with a successful pass from Brandon Peters to Isaiah Williams to complete the upset.
