The first wave of 49ers free agent contracts became official Thursday with the signings of eight players. The most noteworthy player on the list is MarQueis Gray, who was a multi-faceted offensive player at Minnesota the past three seasons. Gray (6 foot 3, 240 pounds) caught 42 passes as a sophomore for 587 yards and five touchdowns as a wide receiver. The next year he played extensively at quarterback, completing 108 of 213 pass attempts for 1,495 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions. As a senior, he rushed for 390 yards and five touchdowns. The 49ers list Gray as a running back. A preliminary list of 49ers free agents has previously been reported. Additions to that list are cornerback Lowell Rose (Tulsa) and punter Anthony Santella (Illinois). The 49ers currently have 83 players officially on their 90-man roster. British Olympian Lawrence Okoye has signed his contract, but it is not yet official. Rose (6 foot 3/8 inch, 194) transferred from UCLA prior to the 2010 season. He started all 14 games last season and was chosen as an honorable mention All-Conference USA selection. He recorded 56 tackles with two interceptions and 10 passes broken up. He impressed scouts at his pro day with a 39½-inch vertical leap and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.50 seconds. Santella will be in camp to prevent All-Pro punter Andy Lee from overworking in the offseason. Santella was a first-team All-Big Ten selection as a senior. He finished his career with a 40.8 punting average. He was in training camp with the Carolina Panthers in 2011.
