Jim Harbaugh said quarterback John Skelton’s workout for the team in early September was among the best he’s seen in such a situation. Skelton’s first week with the 49ers however evidently wasn’t quite as impressive. A week after signing the four-year veteran the 49ers released Skelton 25 today and claimed former Vikings quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson off waivers. Bethel-Thompson who played at Sacramento State and spent training camp with the 49ers in 2011 was released Tuesday when Minnesota signed Josh Freeman. Bethel-Thompson 25 who has not appeared in an NFL game spent time on Miami’s practice squad in 2011. He was the Vikings’ third-string quarterback in 2012 and for the first five weeks of this season. The release of Skelton who has started 17 career games is surprising. Last week Jim Harbaugh said the 49ers wanted to add another veteran quarterback behind Colin Kaepernick. Colt McCoy is San Francisco’s second-string QB.
