The 49ers on Wednesday promoted Joel Patten to the position director of player personnel, taking over for Tom Gamble who left the organization to join the Philadelphia Eagles in February. The 49ers eleveated Matt Malaspina to director of college scouting -- Patten's previous title with the club. Also, former pro personnel scout Mike Williams was promoted to director of pro personnel. The 49ers also promoted Justin Chabot to national scout, Steve Rubio to reional scout and Josh Williams to pro personnel scout. "We are very fortunate to have such a talented and quality player personnel staff," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. "The group's hard work, dedication, and scouting skills are instrumental to our club's success, and we take great pride in promoting these six individuals from within our organization." Patten served three seasons as the 49ers' director of college scouting. He worked alongside Baalke with the Washington Redskins from 2004 to '08 as a national scout. In 2009, he was a regional scout with the St. Louis Rams. Patten played eight seasons in the NFL and three in USFL as an offensive tackle. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Cleveland Browns in 1980 out of Duke University.
