One of the big named players that have been mentioned in trade rumors at points this NBA offseason was Kristaps Porzingis. The former All-Star did not like the role he was playing with Dallas Mavericks and some of the same issues he had with the New York Knicks were popping up again.
There is no denying the talent that Porzingis possesses. He is a matchup nightmare offensively give his ability to play on the perimeter and the sheer size advantage he has inside the 3-point arc. But, Dallas has not seen that consistently enough.
The Mavericks had high hopes when Porzingis was acquired from the Knicks, but he hasn’t met those expectations yet. He has battled numerous injuries and his inconsistency performance-wise is difficult to handle.
Dallas reportedly shopped Porzingis at the NBA trade deadline to the Golden State Warriors. A trade involving him and Kelly Oubre Jr. was discussed, but nothing came to fruition. Mark Cuban has denied those rumors, but where there is smoke, there is usually fire.
Dallas has reportedly been met with a cold market for Porzingis, as he is drawing very little interest. But, as we approach training camp and with the hecticness of the NBA Draft and free agency behind us, teams may come back around in trade talks involving Porzingis.
Where might the Unicorn be a good fit? Here are three teams who should monitor a potential Kristaps Porzingis trade.
Things have not gone well for the Minnesota Timberwolves for nearly two decades. The team has had one playoff appearance, in 2018, in the last 17 years. That is not going to get it done and they need to start winning games sooner than later.
There is hope that winning isn’t far away. Once healthier, this Timberwolves team played well down the stretch of the season, going 11-11 in the final 22 games. D’Angelo Russell, Anthony Edwards, and Karl-Anthony Towns are a nice nucleus to build upon. But, the one spot they could use some help at is power forward.
The Timberwolves are high on Jaden McDaniels, but they were also in the market for a power forward this offseason. Lauri Markkanen was someone linked to the Timberwolves, as were Atlanta Hawks Danilo Gallinari and John Collins.
