The Los Angeles Kings will have an NHL-best nine prospects playing in the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship.

It's the second straight season the Kings will have the most prospects; they had nine at the 2020 WJC.

Among the players participating in the tournament are their three most-recent first-round picks in the NHL Draft: Canada forward Quinton Byfield (No. 2, 2020), United States forward Alex Turcotte (No. 5, 2019) and Sweden defenseman Tobias Bjornfot (No. 22, 2019).

"We were in a position that we needed to build, and we needed to add assets and go that way," Kings director of player personnel Nelson Emerson said. "We've been fortunate enough to be able to accumulate those draft picks and now those kids that are being rewarded by playing in these events. We are excited to watch these players, we're excited to watch them develop and hopefully have success, not only there in junior and at this tournament but as they move forward as pros."

The Detroit Red Wings are second with seven prospects, followed by the Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils and Toronto Maple Leafs with six each. Thirty of the 31 NHL teams will have at least one prospect in the tournament; the St. Louis Blues don't have anyone playing in the WJC.

The 2021 WJC is scheduled for Dec. 25-Jan. 5 at Rogers Place in Edmonton. The tournament will be held without fans in a secure environment, similar to what the NHL used for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The 10 teams are split into two groups for the preliminary round. Group A consists of defending champion Canada, Finland, Switzerland, Slovakia and Germany. Group B features Russia, Sweden, the United States, the Czech Republic and Austria.

NHL Network will broadcast live every game from the tournament in the United States.
