Now that goaltender Ryan Miller is a member of the St. Louis Blues [yes, they were my preseason pick to win the Stanley Cup], Capitals netminders Braden Holtby and Michal Neuvirth can breathe a little easier. There was some recent speculation that Miller could be coming to Washington, but his price tag [$6.25 million] made it next to impossible for the Capitals to create salary space for him. This is good news for fans of Holtby, who will be given every opportunity to win the starting job for the Capitals down the stretch. In addition to acquiring one of the best goaltenders in the NHL, the Blues added one of the grittiest forwards in the game in Steve Ott, making them even more difficult to face in a stacked Western Conference. To get Miller and Otto, the Blues surrendered goaltender Jaroslav Halak, forward Chris Stewart, forward prospect William Carrier, a first-round pick in the 2015 NHL draft and a first-round pick in 2014 if the Blues either reach the Western Conference Final or they re-sign Miller this summer. If the Blues get what they expect out of Miller, both will happen.
With Miller in St. Louis, Caps can look ahead
