Jose Mourinho was a broken man on Saturday night as he conceded the title – and was beaten to the signing of top target Luke Shaw, writes Dean Jones in the Sunday People. The Special One accused his side of lacking ‘balls’ as they were beaten at lowly Crystal Palace. And the Blues' boss bizarrely told a ballboy he could be PUNCHED if he continued to employ what Mourinho saw as time-wasting tactics from the Eagles. But the pain will run even deeper as he learns Southampton full-back Shaw is set to join Manchester United in a £27million deal. Mourinho believed he was was in pole position to land 18-year-old Chelsea fan Shaw. But speculation is mounting that United have put in place a big-money deal to sign Shaw at the end of the season. Sources close to the teenager say he could be now heading for United on wages of £85,000-a-week. That will be a blow for Chelsea, who thought Shaw would join them as the natural long-term successor to Ashley Cole. After defeat at Palace, as John Terry headed a second-half own goal, Mourinho said: “I don’t think we are going to win the title. We depend too much now on other results. Mathematically it is possible, but reality is another thing. Our mentality cost us the game, and also a bit of quality.” Asked what qualities were absent, and what would be needed for next term, Mourinho would not say in front of the TV cameras. But on a piece of paper he then wrote ‘balls’.
