Jake Allen missed his first phone call from the Blues. The Peoria Rivermen played Tuesday night in Cleveland and, being in the Eastern time zone, the goaltender was sleeping when the Blues were walking off the ice on the West Coast after a shocking 6-4 loss to Los Angeles. Allen eventually got the message to meet the Blues in Phoenix, and after an 8:30 flight from Cleveland, he was on the ice for the club’s afternoon practice Wednesday at Jobing.com Arena. The Rivermen were beginning a 12-day road trip that would take them through Canada, so Allen showed up in the desert with warm clothing. No worries, because after blowing a 4-1 lead against the Kings on Tuesday, the Blues are only concerned with whether Allen brought his gear. “I’m excited to be here,” Allen, 22, said. “This is where I wanted to go. Good to be back.” The rookie has been named the Blues’ starter for tonight, when they will face the Phoenix Coyotes for the first time this season. The puck drops at 8 p.m.
