With two outs in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and Atlanta trailing by two runs, Braves infielder Chase d'Arnaud struck out to end the game. The Washington Nationals gathered to celebrate, high-fiving each other and Braves players headed toward the locker room, even the stadium grounds crew started their postgame routine.
But no… Home plate umpire C.B. Bucknor called a foul ball on d'Arnaud's swing, even though he clearly whiffed a Shawn Kelley slider that ended up in the dirt. Foul tip calls are non-reviewable.
Bucknor is commonly known as the worst umpire in Major League Baseball, can add this to his list of shame. This didn’t end up affecting the end of the game as d'Arnaud ended up striking out for a second time.
If this wasn’t enough evidence of how shaky Bucknor was last night, check out his phantom strike zone during a Jayson Werth at-bat.
Jayson Werth just struck out. Didn't swing at any pitch, yet somehow the umpire called 3 of these strikes... pic.twitter.com/5njgsP143q— Mark Bullock (@MarkBullockNFL) April 19, 2017
