"
So the man who once called Vince Carter "fool's gold" now wants us to believe the all-star guard is what the Magic need to win the NBA Finals. That is pretty laughable. Maybe General Manager Otis Smith forgot he made the remark back in 2007 when rumors were flying that the Nets and Magic were talking about a trade that would bring Carter to Orlando for Darko Milicic, Hedo Turkoglu and J.J. Redick. On Feb. 22, 2007, Smith said: "I'm not going to take a step back and fall for what I call fool's gold. It shines and it glitters, but it just doesn't stick or pass the test." So if Carter was fool's gold then, has he somehow polished himself up and turned into solid gold now despite two more ..."

Lawrence Frank was all smiles when the Nets introduced top draft pick Terrence Williams to the media Friday. But Frank could be frowning once the season begins. Heading into the final year of his contract, Frank may need to win early and often to keep his job. However, he will no longer have the player who would have given him the best chance to do that - Vince Carter. Carter was traded to the Magic on Thursday and will take his 20-plus point scoring average with him to Orlando. He was also the team captain and the player opposing teams focused on most, which helped free up Devin Harris last season, the best of his career. But even though Frank lost the player who would have given the ..."

Vince Carter won't get a chance to lead the Nets back to the playoffs, but they hope his departure will help them land a superstar next summer. The Nets traded Carter, their best and most popular player, and young forward Ryan Anderson to the Orlando Magic for guards Courtney Lee and Rafer Alston and veteran big man Tony Battie on Thursday. The Nets also received trade exceptions worth $3.7 million and $1.2 million that they have one year to use. Getting rid of Carter could mean a third straight season without postseason basketball. But cutting his salary - $33.6 million guaranteed for the next two seasons - opens up about $17.5 million next summer when LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris ..."

The Orlando Magic's blockbuster formula for winning the NBA Finals now involves shooting guard Vince Carter as the go-to-guy and very likely not small forward Hedo Turkoglu, who probably will move on after turning down an offer from the club. Magic General Manager Otis Smith told the Sentinel that he made Turkoglu a "decent" initial offer before receiving Turkoglu's official letter this week notifying the team he had opted out of his contract. Smith didn't go into details, but said that Thursday's acquisition of Carter - an eight-time all-star - will make re-signing Turkoglu something of a long-shot."

A sampling of Vince Carter's more memorable performances in his tenure with the Nets: Jan. 28, 2005: Carter hits spinning finger roll and mugs for the camera at Staples Center, dominates "SportsCenter" for days. Scores 30 points (13-for-26). Nets win, 109-103. April 15, 2005: In his first return trip to Toronto, he scores 39 points on 15-of-26 shooting as the Nets win, 101-90. Nov. 7, 2005: The famous, full-windup, windmill dunk over Alonzo Mourning in Miami. Finishes with 32 points, but Nets lose, 90-89, when Carter doesn't get a whistle on the final play. Dec. 23, 2005: Ties a career-high with 51 points in Miami, shooting 13-for-25 from the floor and 23-for-24 from the line. Nets win, ..."

Vince Carter didn't have far to travel when he got the news the Nets had traded him to the Orlando Magic -- he found out at his basketball camp in his hometown of Daytona, according to the Orlando Sentinel. "What a day," Carter said. "I don't know where to start. I was surprised when they told me. They told me I was going to get traded and I was like 'Where?' They told me back home. Now I just can't just wait to get started. It's going to feel like old times.""

Vince Carter says he doesn't read newspapers and that he has no idea what's going on with his coach. But when Carter was informed Thursday that Lawrence Frank's job status is the No. 1 Net issue heading into the offseason, he did not hesitate to offer an endorsement. "He wants to win," Carter said. "He's an X's and O's guy. He works his butt off. "I think he's been great," Carter added. Carter's assessment, which came after the Nets met for the final time following a 34-48 season, could be helpful for Frank if team president Rod Thorn asks the team captain for input. But Carter isn't anticipating it. Still, if Thorn does ask, Carter is all for Frank being back next season. "I think he's ..."

As a group of reporters walked away from Vince Carter's locker late Saturday night, the Nets' captain had one final thought: "I want to get to ninth." The Nets have almost no shot of finishing one spot out of the playoff race in the East. With only two games left, including Monday's home finale against Charlotte, they trail the Bobcats and Pacers by two games each. But Carter's no-quit attitude is what has Nets officials pumped up, even in another disappointing lottery season. The team's last captain, Jason Kidd, didn't exactly show a fighting spirit when things were heading south in his final season. "A lot of people sign up and love it when it's good," Lawrence Frank said. "Vince has ..."

Vince Carter may not be in a Nets' uniform next season, but he plans to be in their practice facility this summer. Carter hopes to duplicate last year when the Nets had near perfect attendance for "voluntary" workouts in August and September. If Carter is still here, he wants to arrange it again. "I plan on it," the Nets' captain said before Friday's 100-93 loss to the Pistons. "It's something I want to do, more so after the draft. Once we get our team, whatever that may be, I'll try and get as many people as possible. "The young guys will be up there working out with the coaches, so why not have some company with them. I think that's big for the captains of the team, like myself and Devin ..."

Vince Carter knows what's coming -- to an extent. He knows this summer will be filled with talk of his contract being moved. There will be theories floated how he could be the final piece for any number of teams. Carter pretty much will relive the days leading up to the trading deadline. And he hopes it has the same result: That he stays a Net. "Absolutely," Carter said. "Like I said, I'd love to finish what we started. I think we've built some good things together." But Carter can't be certain he will be back. There no doubt will be inquiries about Carter -- he remains an All-Star caliber player, averaging 20.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.6 assists, though he deferred to Devin Harris this ..."

After forcing LeBron James and the Cavs on them twice, then Kobe and the Lakers once, the basketball gods finally smiled on the Nets. They sent them here to play a Timberwolves team that had lost seven straight, was 3-21 since Al Jefferson tore his ACL and ranked as the worst shooting team in the NBA world. The gods stacked the deck even more. Randy Foye, Minny's second leading scorer, was a game-time scratch with a bum hip. Yup, even without two of their own, Jarvis Hayes and Bobby Simmons, the Nets pretty much just had to show up and try hard. Couldn't do it. Oh, they showed up. End Net highlights. "I'm very disappointed right now. We're supposedly in a playoff hunt and we didn't look ..."

File this away under the category of stealing is not nice and dropping an anvil on your foot can cause discomfort. The Nets need Vince Carter playing well. Shocking, huh? But Carter has been off his game dating back to a strained right elbow he suffered on Feb. 7 in a 114-70 win over the Nuggets, and the Nets have gone right along with him. Maybe he's hurting. Maybe he's tired. Maybe he's simply getting gang-defended. Whatever, the Nets need Carter to breakout. "It puts a lot of pressure on the other guys to step up and fill the void," said Devin Harris, who at times Wednesday in a 116-112 loss to Golden State seemed to be trying to fill too much - he outshot Carter, 6-2, in the last four ..."

There was lots of talk, lots of offers and counter offers. But when yesterday's 3 p.m. NBA trading deadline arrived, there was nothing that made the Nets want to part with Vince Carter. Or anybody else for that matter. If the Nets were motivated to lighten payroll, they did not find any deal that made sense. Ownership was hopeful of some sort of relief, but team president Rod Thorn was not going to surrender a talent like Carter for expiring contracts or guys whose best years were behind them. But it needed to be considered, given an economy in worse shape than the bottom of the Western Conference. So the Nets will attack their final 27 games intact, starting against the Wizards at the ..."

Vince Carter will remain a Net for at least the rest of this season. Carter was the topic of many trade discussions, but in the end the Nets didn't find a deal today they felt comfortable doing. The 3 p.m. trade deadline passed with the Nets standing pat. Carter's contract, which calls for him to make $33.6 million guaranteed over the next two seasons and has a partial guarantee of about $4.5 million for 2011-12, was a hindrance for most teams. Also, it was known the Nets were looking to shave salary so teams were trying to fleece them, which team president Rod Thorn wouldn't allow. The Nets had conversations with the Spurs, Mavericks, Blazers, Rockets and Cavaliers. In most cases, any ..."

As the trade deadline enters its final hours Thursday, there are numerous factors working against the Nets' bid to shed Vince Carter's salary -- which has become their primary objective, because they can't actually find a deal that will improve their roster. The greatest factor is perception: Every GM in the league ended their business day Wednesday believing that Rod Thorn has no other choice but to go into dump mode, and that he'll be willing to take back virtually nothing but expiring contracts in exchange for Carter. An ESPN report even quoted two of these executives, each of whom stated that the Nets are trying to "give Carter away." Remarkably, Thorn didn't exactly deny it when asked ..."

The trade deadline is tomorrow, and the number of teams rumored to be interested in Vince Carter virtually exceeds his scoring average. But Carter maintains he wants to stay a Net. After watching the Rockets, one of the teams atop the rumor list, rampage through and outmuscle the Nets, 114-88, last night with a dizzying display of 3-pointers, toughness and rebound superiority, one question arises. Why? "When you start something, you definitely want to finish it," said Carter. "We've come a long way since Day One." Carter hears all the rumors and tries to block them, but it's impossible. There's San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, Cleveland, Portland - all looking for scoring, all involved in one ..."

Vince Carter practiced at the Toyota Center on Monday. He may be calling this building home later in the week. The Nets and Rockets have exchanged trade proposals and continue to talk, according to league sources and sources close to the Nets. One scenario has Carter and Josh Boone going to Houston for Ron Artest, Carl Landry and Luther Head. But another Texas team remains very much alive in the Carter sweepstakes. The San Antonio Spurs' package for Carter would include Roger Mason Jr., George Hill and Bruce Bowen, the sources said. Vince Carter hails from Florida, works in New Jersey, but his demeanor usually is more laid-back California. Nothing seems to rattle him on the surface. And that was the face and attitude he put forth here last night regarding a weekend of all-Vince, all-the-time rumors stemming from All-Star weekend, a time he spent "doing nothing" in Florida. Pick a team, he probably was linked to it in at least one trade report over the weekend. Carter - and remember, he wants to stay put - has been through this before with Toronto. "We still have a few days," said team president Rod Thorn. "But as of right now, we have nothing. We've talked to a bunch of teams but we have nothing going on." The team brass in Phoenix for the All-Star weekend fielded numerous inquires, many pertaining to Vince Carter. There were reports and rumors of deals, near deals and possible deals. The New Jersey Nets and Dallas Mavericks have discussed a trade that would reunite Vince Carter and Jason Kidd, with Carter joining the Mavericks, a league source familiar with the discussions said Thursday night. The proposed deal, which isn’t imminent, would send Carter, Keyon Dooling and Eduardo Najera to the Mavericks for Josh Howard and Jerry Stackhouse. Nets executives are still reluctant to trade Carter, but are determined to let teams make their best offers all the way to next Thursday’s trade deadline. Vince Carter thinks the Nets can be a playoff team this season and hopes management doesn't break them up. The NBA trade deadline is Feb. 19, and the Nets have had preliminary talks with numerous teams about Carter and other players. Only All-Star guard Devin Harris and rookie center Brook Lopez seem untouchable. "It would be unfortunate because we started from the ground, as far as expectations of other people," Carter said. "It was a confident bunch at the beginning, and just getting the young guys to believe it; it's like, 'It's not about what you hear and read, it's what you believe.' And we're starting to believe. The Nets didn't have Vince Carter Sunday night, and they didn't have the Denver Nuggets to beat up on, either. A night after winning by the second-largest margin in team history, the Nets fell back to Earth against the Magic, losing, 101-84, as Carter watched from the bench with a strained elbow. Without Carter to draw defenders, the Nets had a tough time. Even while scoring 28 points, All-Star Devin Harris struggled to find his shot, missing 16 of 25 attempts. He was 2-for-11 in the second half. Though Carter scored a relatively modest 12 points Saturday night, his mere presence helped the Nets pound Denver, 114-70. Carter, who injured the ankle in the third quarter of Saturday's 85-83 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, was emphatic in the assertion that he will play Tuesday night, though he avoided the question of whether he would be 100 percent healthy for the game. Carter, of course, injured his right ankle in the third quarter of Saturday's win over Philadelphia and did not finish the game. Lawrence Frank may be playing the most dangerous game with the Nets. Frank benched stars Vince Carter and Devin Harris after an atrocious team first half Saturday against the Celtics. Carter publicly said he understood the move. Harris pretty much said the same, but his annoyance was more evident. So what happens now? "I don't know. I really don't have any comment," said team president Rod Thorn, who deflected attempts to discuss the matter. Frank, who has done probably his best coaching with the Nets (19-22) this season, acknowledged the status of the guys he benched. "Devin and Vince are a big reason for our winning. The message was loud and clear, and sent in the most dramatic fashion. Give no effort, no energy, give up your place on the floor. "I was just totally embarrassed by our performance," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. "It starts with me, and it goes on to our main players. It was an embarrassing, embarrassing start to the game and I just decided to go in another direction." That direction did not include stars Vince Carter and Devin Harris, who were benched for the entire second half of another effortless, lopsided defeat against the Celtics, this one a 105-85, wipeout in the Meadowlands. How's this for an emotional outburst? Vince Carter pulled up from 33 feet and drained a game-winning three-pointer as time expired in overtime Friday night, lifting the Nets to a 93-91 come-from-behind win over the Hawks at the Meadowlands. The Nets had the ball with 11 seconds left in OT when Carter drove to the basket and drew a foul. Since Atlanta had a foul to give, the Nets were awarded the ball with 5.3 seconds left, although Carter argued that he was in the act of shooting. The buzz surrounding Vince Carter's ejection from Wednesday night's game between the New Jersey Nets and Detroit Pistons will most likely warrant a glance from the NBA, the Daily News reports. The Star-Ledger's David Waldstein provides a brief recap of the incident between Vince Carter and official Derrick Stafford: Carter was ejected -- most unjustly, the Nets said -- midway through the second quarter of Wednesday's 83-75 loss to the Pistons after arguing an out-of-bounds call. Carter was bounced with two technical fouls, the second in exceedingly quick fashion, by Stafford after arguing a call. After the second T, Carter's temper exploded. Leave it to Vince Carter to turn a mundane Monday tip into an evening dripping with theatre. From the moment he was introduced to the same fans who once worshipped his high-wire act, Carter was vilified, the venom and the contempt for Vinsanity growing more personal with every touch of the basketball. Tomorrow marks the fourth anniversary when V.C. and T.O. parted company, leaving plenty of bad blood and bad feelings in its wake. But Carter's emotions may be even more out of whack when he takes the court tonight since his last two games against the Raptors netted two dramatically different results. On Nov.21, Carter hit the game-tying and game-winning shots in the Nets' 129-127 overtime road win. Those 39 points tied his season high. Which he first got here, Nov. 21. See how all this stuff ties together? The game here last month, a 129-127 overtime thriller, was Classic Channel worthy. Carter matched his season-high in points, but the Nets were once again done in by their defense, or lack of it. They allowed 38 points in the fourth quarter, 20 in the final 3:10. The smart money said Vince Carter would respond from his 0-of-13 water torture shooting nightmare. He did. But it didn't help the Nets snap out of their latest losing funk. Carter bounced back from the worst shooting night of his career by matching his season high with 39 points, but it wasn't enough to save the Nets, whose failure to execute and get stops in the endgame proved their undoing. So the Bulls pushed the Nets' losing streak to three games with a 113-104 victory last night. All eyes - and defenses - will be on Vince Carter this season. But to state the obvious, he can't do it alone. The Nets need others producing. Like yesterday. Carter strained his left hamstring in the second quarter of the Nets' 100-98 overtime pre-season opening victory against Miami in Paris. So different guys arose. Chris Douglas-Roberts did it immediately after Carter went out. Josh Boone and Eddie Gill were big at the end. And don't overlook Devin Harris. A lot will be asked of Harris this season.
