Tyler Myers News & Rumors

Myers, Ehrhoff feel pain of lost season
"A key reason the Buffalo Sabres limped to a 1-3-1 finish that knocked them out of the Stanley Cup playoffs was the untimely injuries suffered by defensemen Tyler Myers and Christian Ehrhoff. As it turns out, the Sabres would have been without them had they made it into a first-round matchup with the New York Rangers. Myers and Ehrhoff met the media Monday for the first time since getting knocked out of the lineup, and neither was optimistic about returning much before round two. Myers confirmed he suffered a hairline fracture in his ankle blocking a shot by Pittsburgh's Paul Martin on March 30, while Ehrhoff said he sprained his knee during an innocuous collision three nights earlier with"
Myers' foot is longterm ailment, Sabres brush off guarantee by Caps' Laich
"There was still plenty of giddiness in the Sabres' locker room today after last night's crazy overtime win over the Leafs but it was tempered by coach Lindy Ruff's sobering news that Tyler Myers' foot injury appears to be a long-term one. Myers was seen in a walking boot late last night and I asked Ruff today -- twice -- if the foot was broken. He wouldn't answer directly, other than to say the foot was "bad." But Ruff gave plenty of hints when asked if Myers would be back for the playoffs when he responded, "What round?" My translation: Broken foot, 3-4 weeks, you see Myers in the second round if the Sabres are still playing by then."
Sabres lose Myers for last two games
"The Buffalo Sabres' road to the Stanley Cup Playoffs just got a bit harder with the news that top defenseman Tyler Myers will be out for the team's final two games with what coach Lindy Ruff called a "bad foot." "He won't be on the trip," Ruff told reporters Wednesday. "Tyler's out. It'll be a period of time. What time frame that is? It's more than just this week." Myers already has missed two games with the injury, and Buffalo already is without blueliner Christian Ehrhoff with a knee injury, leaving the Sabres shorthanded defensively at the most critical time of the season."
Relieved Myers rejoins push for playoffs
"Defenseman Tyler Myers has cashed in his get-out-of-NHL-jail card and is free to return to the lineup tonight against Montreal. The Sabres went 1-0-2, collecting four of six points, during Myers' three-game suspension for his hit from behind last week on Montreal forward Scott Gomez and Myers is relieved the defense held up in his absence. "[Monday's 7-3 win at Tampa Bay] I thought was one of our best efforts of the year," Myers said Tuesday after taking a brief skate in First Niagara Center. "I think the score showed that and with nine games left we have to keep that going. "It's always good to see the guys do well when you're not playing. As hard as it is to watch, it's good to see we"
Sabres' Myers gets three-game suspension for boarding penalty
"The Sabres' late run toward a playoff spot has taken a serious blow. Defenseman Tyler Myers has earned a three-game suspension for boarding Montreal's Scott Gomez on Monday, the NHL announced this evening. Myers will sit Wednesday's home game against Colorado, Saturday's matchup in Florida and Monday's game in Tampa Bay. He will forfeit $14,189.19 in salary, which goes to the players' emergency assist fund. "It's tough. There's no doubt," coach Lindy Ruff said today. "He's been a big part of our back end.""
Tyler and Tyler show lifts Sabres
"Tyler Ennis had two goals, including one so spectacular even Nathan Gerbe might not have stopped it. Tyler Myers, however, scored the goal that was most important. His gave the Buffalo Sabres another victory. Myers scored 2:01 into overtime Monday, lifting the Sabres to a 3-2 win over Montreal in First Niagara Center. The Sabres shook off the Canadiens' tying tally with 3.5 seconds left and improved to 9-2-2 in their last 13 games. They pulled within two points of eighth-place Washington, which was idle, with 12 games left. "The way we responded after a late goal like that, it's a big step for our group," Myers said. "It's going to come right down to the end. We've got to battle for every"
Sabres' Myers making up for lost time
"Tyler Myers missed 19 games with a broken wrist this season so there's no way he's going to come close to the offensive totals of his first two years. But the Buffalo Sabres defenseman knows he can do more on the score sheet. Myers delivered at a key moment of Saturday's 4-3 shootout win over the New York Islanders, keeping the puck inside the zone and feeding Paul Gaustad for the tying goal at 11:46 of the third period. Myers jumped up on the play on his first shift in the opening period to create pressure in the Islanders' zone and it was how he spent much of the night. The play to feed Gaustad was perhaps his best."
Sabres' Myers OK to give it a shot Friday
"As soon as doctors gave Tyler Myers' body the green light, it was if his mind got healthy, too. The Sabres' defenseman began bombing slap shots and snapping passes Wednesday, his first practice after learning his surgically repaired wrist is completely healed. The prior tentativeness gone. Myers' next step is to play a game. He's hoping to do that Friday when Buffalo visits Carolina. "It's just a matter of these next couple practices getting ready for Friday," Myers said in First Niagara Center. "Hopefully, by Friday I'm ready to go.""
Myers hoping to return to Sabres' lineup Friday
"The Sabres are about to get healthy in a big way. Defenseman Tyler Myers, out since suffering a broken wrist Nov. 19, said today he is fully healed and is hopeful of returning Friday when the Sabres visit Carolina. "It doesn't do any damage to really bear down, so it's just a matter of these next couple practices getting ready for Friday," Myers said in First Niagara Center. "Hopefully, by Friday I'll be ready to go.""
Return of Myers not far off
"It may not be all the Buffalo Sabres want or need for Christmas but they could use defenseman Tyler Myers on the ice. The 6-foot-8 Myers keeps progressing from his broken wrist and has another appointment with team doctors on Monday. Myers isn't ruling out a return to games late next week, although coach Lindy Ruff said that's probably premature. Myers has been out since suffering the injury Nov. 19 against Phoenix, when the Sabres were 12-8-0. They're 4-7-3 since and have sunk to 11th place in the Eastern Conference. "I know I'm close [to returning]," Myers said after skating with the team for an hour Friday morning in First Niagara Center. "It's just a matter of getting where I need to"
Myers out 4-6 weeks with broken wrist
"The Buffalo Sabres spent the first quarter of the season with seven healthy defensemen and Mike Weber sat most nights as a healthy scratch. Suddenly, they're very thin on the blueline. Coach Lindy Ruff dropped a big dose of bad news on the media Monday afternoon following practice at the Northtown Center of Amherst -- Tyler Myers will be lost to the team for probably 4-6 weeks with a broken wrist suffered in the second period of Saturday night's loss to Phoenix. Ruff said Myers had surgery on the injury Monday morning. "It happened just on an awkward play, nothing you would ever notice," Ruff said. "Just one of those freak-like incidents.""
Myers' loss leaves defense down a player
"Tyler Myers ended the week the same way he started it. He was on the sidelines, watching the Sabres play. The Buffalo defenseman suffered an injury to either his wrist or hand Saturday, an ailment that forced him to miss the third period of the Sabres' 4-2 loss to Phoenix in First Niagara Center. The injury will be re-evaluated today, with coach Lindy Ruff saying he's not sure how long Myers could be out. "You're always worried when the player misses time," said Ruff, who last had Myers on the ice with 1:07 left in the second period."
Benched Myers realizes he has to be better
"Tyler Myers was minus-3 Saturday in Boston. He committed two giveaways directly responsible for Bruins goals. And, of course, he was one of the most prominent players who stood by with little response after Milan Lucic crushed Ryan Miller. There's been virtually no shaking the 6-foot-8 Myers from the doldrums he's been in all season, so coach Lindy Ruff took a big step Monday when he made the former Calder Trophy-winning defenseman a healthy scratch for the first time in his career for the game against the Montreal Canadiens. Myers is struggling in every area in the wake of signing his seven-year, $38.5 million contract extension that kicks in next season. He has no goals and just four"
Myers gets good return on seven-year contract with Sabres
"Just a few weeks ago, Tyler Myers completed his first mini-triathlon. He swam, biked and ran through 16 miles of his hometown of Kelowna, British Columbia. He loved it. He plans to make it a yearly outing, so it's on his calendar for next August. He added two more annual events Thursday. They have his planner occupied until 2019. The first is to return to Buffalo every fall to play for the Sabres. The second is collect very large paychecks for doing the first. The Sabres' rising star on the blue line became the latest person to benefit from owner Terry Pegula's commitment to winning. Myers and the Sabres agreed to a seven-year contract extension worth $38.5 million, including a $10 million"
Tyler Myers agrees to seven-year, $38.5 million extension with Buffalo
"After the reports came down yesterday about how Tyler Myers was working on a contract extension with the Buffalo Sabres, it shows that sometimes there's truth to a report. The Sabres announced today that Myers has agreed to a seven year contract extension with the 6'8? 21 year-old defenseman. With Myers heading into his third season in the NHL, and the final year on his entry level contract, he was due to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season. Rather than waiting until then, and perhaps after seeing some of the difficulties other teams have had in getting guys re-signed this summer, the Sabres moved quickly this summer to get Myers a new deal. Myers' contract will pay him"
Myers, team close to reaching new deal
"Terry Pegula, while delivering season tickets Wednesday to a handful of lucky fans, also delivered big news regarding defenseman Tyler Myers. "Tyler ain't goin' anywhere," the Buffalo Sabres owner said. The Sabres are in the final stages of a long-term contract extension with their rising star on the blue line. The 21-year-old is set to enter the final year of his three-year, entry-level contract, but it won't be his final season in Blue and Gold. "We had two sides that wanted to stay together," Myers' agent, J.P. Barry, said by phone. "Tyler wanted to remain a Sabre, and having this done at an early stage was something that he wanted. He's happy that the club approached him about wanting"
Myers' agent: Deal with Sabres 'not far away'
"Contract extension talks between the Sabres and defenseman Tyler Myers are nearing their final stages, with Myers' agent telling The Buffalo News the sides are "not far away at all." "We've been working for the better part of the last week here, and we're definitely proceeding here every day," J.P. Barry said by phone late this afternoon. "We're working hard on trying to get something finalized. "We're still here doing some stuff today, so we hope to continue today. We're not far away at all.""
Tavares, Myers on the verge of multi-year extensions
"TSN Insider Bob McKenzie has learned that New York Islanders forward John Tavares and Buffalo Sabres defenceman Tyler Myers are both on the verge of multi-year contract extensions with their respective teams. While the deals have not yet been finalized, they are both believed to be in six-year range and worth an annual average of roughly $5.5 million. Both Tavares and Myers have one year left remaining on their entry-level deals signed in 2009."
Sabres set to mix and match
"The easiest way to explain the emotions, Robyn Regehr said, is to imagine you're the new kid in school. The faces are unfamiliar, the course load is alien and the scenery is strange. Yet beneath the anxiety, there is a thrill of anticipation, an eagerness to learn fresh things. Classes start this week for Regehr and the rest of the Buffalo Sabres. The 2011-12 NHL season begins Friday when the Sabres formally arrive in town for physicals. They'll take the ice for the first time Saturday in Northtown Center at Amherst. "For me, it's quite a bit different than a lot of the players that are returning," said Regehr, one of the Sabres' prime additions during the offseason. "Just being a part of"
Both Tylers need to stand tall for Sabres
"Believe it or not, Tyler Myers has always been mean. Behind that aw-shucks grin, humble attitude and nice-guy demeanor is a 6-foot-8 mountain of fury. It just takes a lot of agitation for the Buffalo defenseman to show it. The Philadelphia Flyers have finally dragged it out of him. The first-round playoff series between the Sabres and Flyers has been equal parts skill and scrapping. It's also been equal parts Sabres and Flyers, with the teams set to break their 2-2 tie tonight in Game Five in Wells Fargo Center. Myers' skill was well-known. His scrap essentially was a secret, until Wednesday. The 21-year-old shed his smooth skating for rough shoving. Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller laid down"
Sabres defenseman Myers a big concern for Flyers
"Like the vast majority of NHL players, the Buffalo Sabres look up to Tyler Myers, not only because the 21-year-old stands 6-foot-8, but also because he's clearly their best defenseman. Flyers followers wringing their hands over the injury status of Chris Pronger as Thursday's Game 1 of a first-round Stanley Cup playoff series against the Sabres approaches can take comfort: Even without Pronger, the Flyers' corps of defensemen is significantly stronger than Buffalo's. Yet, Myers figures to pose problems - at both ends of the ice. In his second season with the Sabres, the Texas-born, Calgary-raised 2008 first-round draft choice (No. 12 overall) has the wingspan of a condor and plays the"
Struggles telling for Myers
"There is standing tall the literal way Tyler Myers does as a normal part of his life and there's the figurative way he's trying to stay upright through the darkest segment of his NHL career. Seven months after collecting the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie, the 6-foot-8 Myers endured his first benching Thursday in Boston and played a career-low 11 minutes, 56 seconds. Friday in HSBC Arena, a Myers giveaway led to the New York Islanders' first goal, which banked off the big guy's massive skate and skittered past a stunned Ryan Miller. The Myers of January looks much like the Myers of October. Confused and uncertain, especially in the defensive zone. As the Sabres try to reclaim some"
Return of Myers gives Sabres a crowd on blue line
"Tyler Myers' trip to Calgary this week was full of surprises. The Buffalo Sabres' defenseman knew he'd see family and friends for his first NHL game at home, but he had no clue how many. They came out en masse, with unexpected acquaintances popping in unannounced from all over the place. The biggest shock to them all came when Tuesday's game started and Myers was nowhere to be found. He felt terrible during the pregame skate and decided he'd be no help to the team. He sat out his first professional game, and it came during his inaugural appearance in his hometown. "It was the worst timing ever," Myers said Friday. "I had a bunch of family and friends out there to watch me, and to have to"
Myers finds simple solution to his struggles
"Suddenly, defenseman Tyler Myers isn't anywhere near the bottom of the NHL's plus-minus ratings. All that sophomore slump talk is fading away. Myers is a plus-7 the last two games, including plus-5 in Thursday's 6-3 win over San Jose. He's cut his season's rating to a mere minus-3, a far cry from the minus-12 nightmare he endured over the first five weeks of the schedule. And while plus-minus is often a misleading statistic, it was all too telling in Myers' case. Playing without the departed Henrik Tallinder as his partner, Myers was patently brutal at times to open the season. But in recent games, he has been the Myers of 2009-10. "At the start, I was feeling the pressure," Myers said, in"
Like Senators' Karlsson, Sabres' Myers having tough start to second NHL season
"At first glance, there would appear to be few similarities between defencemen Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators and Tyler Myers of the Buffalo Sabres. Karlsson is from Sweden and generously listed at 6-0 and 175 pounds. Myers was born in Houston, spent his teenage years in Calgary, stands 6-8 and weighs 227 pounds. Yet Karlsson and Myers have plenty of shared experiences early in their pro careers. Myers won the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year last season, while Karlsson emerged as an offensive star late in the season and in the playoffs. Now they're both struggling. Myers had only one goal and one assist and had a plus/minus rating of minus-seven going into Friday night's game"
Miller, Myers haul in the hardware
"Ryan Miller, his eyes and smile both gleaming with excitement, stared at his Vezina Trophy and marveled at the names on it. Jacques Plante. Ken Dryden. Dominik Hasek. Martin Brodeur. They are members of hockey royalty, and the Buffalo Sabres' goaltender was truly honored to join them. "I'm looking at all these names, and it's pretty amazing, the history on this trophy," Miller said. "To get my name on there is pretty cool." Miller had a night to remember Wednesday in the Palms Hotel and Casino, winning his first Vezina as top goaltender and the NHL Foundation Player Award for his work in the community. Miller also was named First Team All-Star. He was joined on the podium by Sabres"
