Troy Tulowitzki knows he must "get going" to help Colorado Rockies
May 22
Denver Post
columnist Troy E. Renck
"
Troy Tulowitzki believes he has been "brutal" this season. His team has been worse, falling into a tie for last place in the National League West entering Monday night. As he sat in the back corner of the Rockies' clubhouse, the all-star shortstop spoke in measured tones about a season in which he hasn't measured up. Manager Jim Tracy dropped Tulowitzki to fifth in the lineup, followed by Todd Helton in the sixth slot, to try to jump-start the offense. "I have to get myself going," Tulowitzki said. "When I do that, they will put me where I fit best. It's not a big deal. I need to get moving in the right direction."

Troy Tulowitzki must narrow his focus
May 20
Denver Post
columnist Troy E. Renck
"
Troy Tulowitzki is the pulse of the Rockies. He doesn't need to be the happy face. At 27, Tulowitzki wants to be a better teammate, a better leader. He reviewed last season, listened to advice and arrived this spring ready to take on a larger role, receiving a formal nudge from Todd Helton. Fact is, Tulo shouldn't worry about the big picture. Not right now. Other than keeping an even keel in the clubhouse, he doesn't need to change. Tulo has a temper. He throws helmets. He slams his fist. He plays with intensity. It's in his DNA. Does it make him less likable to some fans and opponents? Without question. But it's also what has helped him finish second in the rookie of the year voting and

Rockies' Troy Tulowitzki works hard to regain form
May 15
Denver Post
"
For Troy Tulowitzki, the standings are a reflection of what he sees in the mirror. He's not playing well, and not surprisingly, the team has followed suit. "No one is more frustrated than I am with my performance. I understand the criticism. I know what I signed up for," Tulowitzki said. "I can tell you I am working hard to get better." Tulowitzki arrived early Monday to take extra batting practice. He is slumping, hitting too many flyballs, traced to anxiousness at the plate.

X-Rays negative on Tulo's leg as Rockies avert serious injury
May 15
Denver Post
"
Moments after Dexter Fowler's foul ball struck Troy Tulowitzki on the left fibula in the eighth inning Monday night, he thought his leg was broken. "When I went to the on-deck circle, I was sure it was because I couldn't feel anything," said Tulowitzki after the Rockies' 3-2 loss, their 12th in 15 games. "I guess you have a nerve in there like the elbow and that's what caused it to go numb. I know I am going to be really sore tomorrow. I don't know after that. I am not a doctor. But I glad that it's not worse." X-Rays were negative on the leg, leaving the all-star shortstop listed as day-to-day with a deep bruise on his fibula. However, he's unlikely to play in the series finale against

Rockies' Troy Tulowitzki wanted to play even after injury
May 11
Denver Post
"
Troy Tulowitzki watched on Wednesday, uncomfortable not because of his strained right groin, but because he wasn't playing. The Rockies shortstop wanted to start the game against San Diego after aggravating his leg injury running to first base Tuesday. Manager Jim Tracy and head athletic trainer Keith Dugger advised against it. "The way he ran that ball out and kept the inning alive for another hitter, that's the kind of effort that was missing last year. Not from him, but from the team," Tracy said. With caution the plan, Tulo was left sitting Wednesday, encouraging teammates who ended a five-game losing streak on the strength of rookie Christian Friedrich's strong performance.

Rockies' Tulo sits out with slight groin injury; Guthrie could return Tuesday
May 9
Denver Post
"
Exercising caution with an injury that has lingered for several weeks, Troy Tulowitzki is not in the starting lineup because of a sore left groin. Tulowitzki aggravated the injury running to first base in Tuesday's loss, the Rockies' fifth straight. "It stinks not to be in there with the ways things are going. But they want to give me two straight days to let it calm down," Tulowitzki said. "They want to be smart about it." Manager Jim Tracy said that Tulo's injury first surfaced in spring training, so the team is taking a careful to manage it. Tulowitzki has hit safely in 15 of the last 17 games, grinding out at-bats while trying to find his swing.

Rockies' suddenly error-prone Tulowitzki not in starting lineup
April 19
Denver Post
"
Rockies Gold Glove shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, struggling in the field, was held out of the starting lineup Wednesday night against the Padres. Manager Jim Tracy said it was a planned day off, but Tulowitzki admitted that his recent string of errors has gotten inside his head. "I'm scuffling right now. It's tough. I think about it," he said. "It's frustrating. I feel like I let my teammates down. But it is what it is. It's how I respond to it and get out of it that's going to make me a better player."

Tulo's defensive start has been anything but golden
April 17
Denver Post
"
It's not often a man with a Gold Glove is red-faced on defense. But Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki is slumping. With a fielding error Monday against San Diego, he has committed four errors this season after being charged with just six a year ago en route to his second consecutive Gold Glove. "I am trying to top last year's total in one week," Tulowitzki deadpanned before Monday's game.

Tulowitzki improves, could play Wednesday for Rockies
April 4
Denver Post
"
The improving health of Troy Tulowitzki and Michael Cuddyer has eased the Rockies' concerns about their availability for Friday's opening night in Houston. Tulowitzki will take batting practice today, swinging a bat for the first time since Cleveland right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez plunked the shortstop with a fastball on his left elbow. Jimenez was suspended for five games and fined Monday, a disciplinary measure he's appealing. Tulowitzki's injury has improved significantly through ice and massage treatment. "Each day I am able to do it a little more. We will see where it is today, and if goes well, I hope to play tomorrow (in the final exhibition game)," Tulowitzki said.

Rockies enraged after Troy Tulowitzki gets hit by Ubaldo Jimenez fastball
April 2
Denver Post
"
Lingering ill will between former teammates erupted Sunday when Indians pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez hit Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki in the left elbow with a fastball on the first pitch of Tulo's first at-bat in the Cactus League exhibition game. Tulowitzki left the game, prompting concern that he might not be ready for the Rockies' season opener Friday in Houston. X-rays revealed no structural damage, but the Rockies won't know if he will miss playing time until he's evaluated again today. After hitting Tulowitzki, Jimenez raced toward the plate, motioning with his arms for Tulowitzki to come toward him. Teammates on both sides quickly intervened as benches emptied. Tulowitzki exited

Rockies manager Jim Tracy furious with Ubaldo Jimenez after "potshot"
April 2
Denver Post
"
Saying he has lost all respect for his former ace, Rockies manager Jim Tracy unloaded on Indians pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez on Sunday, calling his plunking of all-star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki "a gutless act." Tracy demanded that Jimenez be suspended, saying the right-hander intentionally hit Tulowitzki on the first pitch of his first at-bat at Salt River Fields. Major League Baseball will investigate, with Jimenez possibly facing discipline. There was no TV broadcast of the game, but commissioner Bud Selig was in attendance and the Rockies will provide in-house video of the incident.

Ubaldo Jimenez drills Troy Tulowitzki, benches clear, Tulo leaves with elbow injury
April 2
Denver Post
"
A war of words turned ugly today as the Indians' Ubaldo Jimenez hit Rockies' shortstop Troy Tulowitzki in the left elbow with a fastball on the first pitch of his at-bat. Tulowitzki left the game with the injury, prompting concern that he might not be ready for opening day this Friday in Houston. He was taken to local hospital for precautionary X-rays on his left elbow. Those X-rays were negative, meaning there was no structural damage. After hitting Tulowitzki in his first at-bat, Jimenez raced toward the plate, motioning with his arms multiple times for Tulowitzki to come toward him. Teammates on both sides quickly got between the players as benches emptied. Tulowitzki exited the game

Troy Tulowitzki's goal holds gold as the standard for Rockies
March 21
Denver Post
"
For a team walking around with undershirts that read "Teamwork," any talk about individual awards can come off as offensive. Unless, of course, it revolves around defense. The Rockies' Troy Tulowitzki has set the gold standard at shortstop the past two seasons. "I told you after I won a Gold Glove it was about trying to put a run together. I want to make a big run," Tulowitzki said. "I am in this game to try to put my stamp on some of the all-time records. I want to own 10 of them."

Troy Tulowitzki becoming big fan of Brandon Wood's work with Rockies
March 14
Denver Post
"
When I approached Troy Tulowitzki in the clubhouse early Tuesday morning, he was busy organizing the Rockies' NCAA Tournament pool. He wasn't really in the mood to chat about baseball. But when I brought up Brandon Wood, the third baseman who is trying to rebuild his swing and resurrect his career, Tulo quickly looked up from his bundle of March Madness brackets. He started talking passionately about the 27-year-old "kid" he has been teaching. Nearly every day, Wood and Tulo meet at the cage to work on hitting. "Woody's really kind of stuck with me and really picked my brain — more than anybody in camp," Tulowitzki said. "I think he's one of those guys who really took what I said to heart.

Tulowitzki's leadership style loud and clear
March 4
Denver Post
"
It was one of those moments that creates animosity from opponents. Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki barked orders and shouted encouragement during fielding drills 12 days ago, cementing his reputation that he's too much. Too loud, too confident, too intense. "It's not fake," Tulowitzki said. "This is who I am and how I've always wanted to express myself." Last week, Tulowitzki talked candidly about how, for the first time, this "really feels like my team." This was notable for two seasons: First baseman Todd Helton passed the baton, and Tulo willingly took it. Let's be honest: Players of Tulo's stature often surround themselves with yes people. They are told they are great and live in a

Troy Tulowitzki new leader in Colorado Rockies' clubhouse
March 1
Denver Post
"
Troy Tulowitzki's voice is coming in loud and clear at last. Entering his sixth full major-league season, the all-star shortstop is prepared to be the Rockies' leader after a quiet passing of the baton this spring by Todd Helton. "This is the way I have always wanted to express myself, but for the first time in my career I really feel like it's my team," Tulowitzki told The Denver Post on Wednesday. "And the reason is Todd." Helton recently pulled Tulowitzki aside, a talk that strengthened their relationship and changed the clubhouse dynamic. The first baseman and most accomplished player in Rockies history told Tulowitzki that he should assume a larger role. Teammates have fed off Tulo's

Rockies' Troy Tulowitzki played against Jeremy Lin in high school
February 27
Denver Post
"
Before the Coors Field crowd performed the clap-clap chant during his at-bats, before the most ardent New York fan knew his name, there was the Fremont (Calif.) High Firebirds vs. the Palo Alto Vikings. Five years before one became Tulo and 10 years before Linsanity, Troy Tulowitzki and Jeremy Lin squared off in high school hoops. Tulo, who averaged 22.6 points a game his senior year as a second-team all-state player, knocked out Lin, then a junior, in the playoffs, one of only three losses over the point guard's final 66 games.

Denver Post
columnist Mark Kiszla

Remember when Troy Tulowitzki was Denver's favorite son? Back before the dawn of Tebowmania, the name every fan loved best was Tulo. But as he was blasting 30 home runs and gobbling up grounders with his golden glove last year, a strange thing happened to Tulowitzki. The shine wore off. The crass questions began. Was Tulowitzki really worth a contract in excess of $150 million? Why couldn't he stop the Rockies from being the biggest bust in the National League? What, you mean to tell us Tulo isn't 10 feet tall and bulletproof? "It comes with the job," Tulowitzki said. "When things are going good and you're playing well, you're on top of the world. But when you're playing bad, you're ..."

Rockies' Troy Tulowitzki wins Silver Slugger award for offense
November 3
Denver Post
"
Troy Tulowitzki walked off with a second consecutive Silver Slugger award Wednesday as the National League's best-hitting shortstop. But he's ultimately after a bigger prize. "I definitely, every once in a while, will take a look at the record book and see how many Silver Sluggers Cal Ripken won," Tulowitzki said. "Because he's somebody I looked up to." Here's some reference help: eight. Ripken, the former Hall of Fame Baltimore shortstop and 19-time all-star, won eight Silver Sluggers and two Gold Gloves in his career.

Rockies' Tulowitzki catches second straight Gold Glove
November 2
Denver Post
"
When you're a Gold Glove shortstop, you learn to anticipate things coming your way. So it was that Troy Tulowitzki, the face of the Rockies' franchise, expected to win his second consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove Award on Tuesday night. And sure enough, he did. Tulowitzki beat out the other finalists, Pittsburgh's Ronny Cedeño and Atlanta's Alex Gonzalez, after a season in which he established career highs in fielding percentage (.991) and fewest errors (six). He also went 59 consecutive games, from late June to early September, without an error, another career best. So what does he have planned for an encore? He wants to strike gold again and again and again. "I remember thinking a few

Tulowitzki named The Sporting News' all-star shortstop
October 28
Denver Post
"
The Rockies' 2011 season was a bust, but Tulo's reputation emerged unscathed. The Sports News today named Troy Tulowitzki as its starting shortstop on it's National League all-star team. The award carries weight because it's selected by 55 members of major league front offices — 26 AL executives and 29 NL executives. "I'd rather be playing, but it's always cool to get recognized as one of better players in the game," Tulowitzki said. Tulowitzki hit .302 with 30 home runs and a career-high 105 RBIs. His fielding percentage of .991 (just six errors in 684 total chances) was the best of his career.

Rockies' Tulowitzki, Gonzalez on schedule with injury recovery
October 18
Denver Post
"
The Rockies' dream of returning to a World Series in their 20th season hinges on a better roster and improved health from its top players. Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez told The Denver Post on Monday that injuries that sidelined them in September are healing as scheduled. Tulowitzki had just 35 at-bats in the final month and started just two times after Sept. 13 because of bursitis in his left hip. "It got better from rest. I have started doing light workouts," Tulowitzki said.
"
Tulowitzki critical of his work as Rockies' team leader
September 23
Denver Post
"
So odious is this season, no one can leave without a stench. Even Troy Tulowitzki knows that if the Rockies are going to improve, he must get better. He's not exactly the acorn that becomes the tree. There's not a lot of room for growth for a player who has 30 home runs and 105 RBIs and remains a near-lock to win his second consecutive Gold Glove. Tulowitzki, who grinded through left hip soreness in Thursday's game, believes he fell short in his leadership. His greatest asset is that he breathes, eats and sleeps baseball. It is also his greatest weakness, because his failures weigh on his shoulders and face. "This is my team. I need to take these young guys under my wing. I have done it,

Rockies' Troy Tulowitzki one of six finalists for major leagues' man of year award
September 13

When Troy Tulowitzki became a Rockie for life last winter, he stressed how important it was for him to become a bigger part of the Denver community. He has been a key figure in Wins 4 Kids, growing bad hair for a good cause to raise money for Children's Hospital Colorado and Special Olympics. The initiative has raised more than $25,000. He was recognized for his work Monday, when he was named one of six finalists for the Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award. "It's an honor to be a finalist, but nothing is better than helping and putting a smile on someone's face that's in need," Tulowitzki told The Post. Tulowitzki joined the Yankees' Dave Robertson, the Mets' David Wright, White Sox?

Little injuries take Tulowitzki, CarGo, Helton out of Rockies' lineup
September 12
Denver Post

Drew Pomeranz peeked at the lineup, and his eyes widened a bit. He wasn't sharing the spotlight with anyone Sunday. All-star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki? sat out for the second time in two days with stiffness in his left hip and will undergo an examination to determine whether he has bursitis. He could miss the two-game Milwaukee series. Right fielder Carlos Gonzalez was a late scratch with back stiffness. Todd Helton? sat out for the sixth time in the last seven games with back pain, but he remained hopeful that it will improve following a cortisone shot. Tulowitzki's left hip began tightening as he ran the bases in the later innings of Saturday's win over the Reds. "I hate watching. I

Rockies rally past Arizona Diamondbacks behind Troy Tulowitzki
September 7
Denver Post
"
True to baseball tradition, the Rockies are doing what all disappointing teams do in September. They're looking at the kids. They called up a handful of minor-leaguers Tuesday, and manager Jim Tracy didn't waste any time jotting down some of the names on his lineup card. So it was that catcher Wilin Rosario and third baseman Jordan Pacheco made their major- league debuts. But it isn't just rookies who are taking the eyeball test at Coors Field. Some veterans are too, among them right-hander Jason Hammel, whose season had spiraled downward by mid-August, costing him his spot in the rotation. Given a spot start, Hammel responded, allowing six hits and two runs, one earned, in seven innings.

Troy Tulowitzki comes through in Rockies' win over Padres
September 4
Denver Post
"
Instant success as a major-leaguer heightened expectations for Troy Tulo-witzki. He was part of a magical team and a miracle run in 2007. Everyone from Dodgers manager Joe Torre to Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. took notice. His ascension to superstardom has, at times, camouflaged weaknesses. Tulowitzki is having another terrific year but is determined to excel more with runners in scoring position. Too often he tries too hard, compromising his at-bats. As his team looks to fix bigger issues, Tulo is quietly addressing his, delivering the go-ahead hit for the Rockies in their 5-4 victory over the Padres on Saturday night. "It's something I know I have to improve," Tulowitzki said.

Troy Tulowitzki? had soreness in his left wrist. And if there was ever a time to rest the shortstop, Arizona was the right opponent for it. Tulo is batting .113 (6-for-53) against the Diamondbacks this season, compared to .311 vs. the rest of the National League. Tulowitzki pinch-hit but struck out to end the game.

Rockies needing more than Tulo, CarGo

The Rockies are determined to add a veteran pitcher and at least one more big bat. That slugger will either be an outfielder or third baseman. They will pursue the Twins' Michael Cuddyer if he becomes a free agent (Minnesota is bent on keeping him). Oakland's Josh Willingham is another option. With apologies to Kevin Kouzmanoff's performance the last few days, third base has been a problem the entire season. Ian Stewart was hurt, didn't hit and now is hurt again, a wrist injury possibly ending his year. Ty Wigginton showed potential in June to be the everyday guy, but he has struggled to hit with runners in scoring position. He has lost time during every experiment this year, from Jose

Rockies' Tulowitzki sets mark for consecutive games without an error
August 23

Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki has a chance to set career highs in homers and RBIs. He quietly set a fielding mark over the weekend. He hasn't committed an error in 47 consecutive games, breaking his previous mark of 45. His last error came in a June 26 loss at Yankee Stadium. Tulowitzki has only four errors this year and is a strong candidate to win his second consecutive Gold Glove.

Rockies' Tulowitzki's play appears golden
August 13
Denver Post
"
Troy Tulowitzki will be hard-pressed to win National League MVP honors, given his team's underwhelming season. But he appears a lock for his second consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove. Tulo has been charged with just four errors, and made one of his most impressive plays of the season in the sixth inning, backhanding a ball and throwing off-balance to nail Lance Berkman at the plate. Cat-like reflexes: Berkman, known as the "Big Puma," has hit safely in 18 of the last 20 games. He doubled and scored in the second inning.

Tulowitzki gets hot, but Rockies fall to Reds 3-2 in Cincinnati
August 11
Denver Post

The Rockies came into the ninth inning like a sunrise and faded meekly into the darkness. Ripe became wrong, another missed opportunity in a season defined by them. The Rockies lost 3-2 Wednesday to the Reds at Great American Ball Park. "It seems like all the same (expletive) keeps happening over and over," outfielder Carlos Gonzalez said. "We have great situations to win games and we don't get the job done. I get tired of talking about the same (expletive)." It long ago stopped being about what happened with Colorado, but how. Bad fundamentals are like credit cards or Xbox games of Halo. Once you are in, it's hard to get out. The Rockies have made repeated mistakes this season, and a

Troy Tulowitzki wasn't wearing black Ray-Bans. And a team charter bus, not a gray Porsche, was his ride home. But for a moment, Tulo slipped into Tom Cruise's character in "Risky Business" to explain the Rockies' 3-2 victory Tuesday night over the Reds at Great American Ball Park. Sometimes in baseball, as in life, you gotta say what the heck and take some chances. The way Tulowitzki saw it, the Rockies' win turned on one play that won't be showing up at any coaching clinics. It was the sixth inning. The Rockies were white-knuckling a 3-2 lead. The Reds' Ramon Hernandez and Todd Frazier opened with back-to-back singles off Colorado starter Esmil Rogers. That brought pitcher Dontrelle

Injuries to Rockies' Tulo, Cook not serious

Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki left Tuesday's game after eight innings with an injured right pinkie. He said the injury occurred while throwing during the game. "It's not serious. I should be able able to go tomorrow. I will know more in the morning," he said. Aaron Cook exited after four innings with what he described as "stinger" on the right side of his neck.

Troy Tulowitzki an All-Star Game starter

Denver Post
"
All the star players bear a mark of originality. Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki leans forward when he walks. It's not a John Travolta in "Saturday Night Fever" strut. But it's impossible not to notice his gait, his palpable confidence. "From the first day he stepped foot in the clubhouse, he had a presence about him," said St. Louis Cardinals all-star outfielder Matt Holliday, Tulowitzki's former Rockies teammate. "You could see how driven he was." Tulowitzki's determination drove him to tonight's honor. He will be an All-Star Game starter and will hit eighth for the National League, one slot behind Holliday. Tulowitzki is the Rockies' only all-star, a responsibility he takes seriously.

Rockies' Carlos Gonzalez returns; Tulowitzki expected back tonight
July 9

"
Carlos Gonzalez returned to the Rockies' lineup Friday night, five days after a nasty collision with the center-field wall at Coors Field. Troy Tulowitzki will return tonight, five days after suffering a strained right quadriceps in Atlanta. No, it isn't a coincidence that both are returning so quickly. At this point, with the Rockies' season spiraling downward, they don't have much of a choice. "No doubt about it, I'm stuck in a tough situation here," Tulowitzki said. "We're not playing good on this trip. Probably more so than ever this season, it's time we need to stop this losing streak. "It's tough, there's no doubt about it. I've never been a guy to beat around the bush. We're

Tulo's all-star start depends on recovery

For a month, Troy Tulowitzki led the fan voting for the All-Star Game. In the final week, the Mets' Jose Reyes passed him. He did it again Thursday, beating Tulowitzki to the disabled list. Reyes was shelved for 15 days with a hamstring injury. That means Tulo could become the first Rockies position player to start in the All-Star Game since Todd Helton in 2003 — if he can get healthy. Tulowitzki has not played since straining his right quadriceps Monday night while running to first base. His all-star participation hinges on the next few days. "Yes, the Rockies are my main focus. If I do not play this weekend, I will not play in the All-Star Game," Tulowitzki said following Colorado's 6-3

Tulo, CarGo taking time to heal injuries

Troy Tulowitzki emerged from the trainer's room with optimism, but no date for his return. His right quadriceps remains sore, leaving him unable to perform baseball activity Tuesday. "I feel OK. I just know I can't rush it. I have done that before, and I ended up with a serious injury," he said. "I don't want to put a timetable on it." The timing of Tulowitzki's injury couldn't be much worse. He's unlikely to return before Thursday, which is the earliest that Carlos Gonzalez (bruised right wrist) will return. "Injuries never seem to come at a good time," general manager Dan O'Dowd said. Tulowitzki rode the stationary bike and received treatment Tuesday. No baseball activities are planned

All-star Tulowitzki tweaks quad, could miss rest of Braves series

"
They have become movie fights disguised as baseball games. Watch the Rockies closely, and you can almost hear the crashing furniture and broken staircases. They are bare-knuckle brawling to keep their season relevant, while succumbing to injuries in the process. One day after Carlos Gonzalez bruised his right wrist slamming into a wall, all-star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki left Monday night's game with a tight right quadriceps after batting in the fourth inning. He will not play tonight and could miss the remainder of the series. "If I have to miss a game or two or three or four, that's better than two months," Tulowitzki said. "I will have a better idea (today)." Tulowitzki began favoring

Forget the scoreboard. And the highlight loops. Everything you need to know about the Rockies' game, if not season, was captured inside the clubhouse in the fourth inning at Turner Field. Troy Tulowitzki limped through the doors just as Carlos Gonzalez walked out of the trainer's room after icing his sore right wrist. "Aren't you supposed to be playing?" Gonzalez asked Tulowitzki. "I hurt my (right) quadriceps," Tulowitzki responded. "From bad to worse," said Gonzalez, summing up the Rockies' 4-1 loss Monday night to the Atlanta Braves in the opener of a critical seven-game road trip leading to the all-star break. It was the Rockies' fourth straight road loss. Though the inflammation has

Troy Tulowitzki is a National League all-star for the second consecutive season. Will Todd Helton be joining him? Tulowitzki was named to the NL team Sunday, having been voted in by his fellow players. He was the lone Rockie to make the team, but veteran first baseman Helton has a chance if he wins a special supplemental election — "The Final Vote" — to be decided by fans, who can cast their ballots at MLB.com through 2 p.m. Thursday. Rockies manager Jim Tracy was Helton's de facto campaign manager Sunday. "I'm imploring to our Rockies nation to get busy, get online and punch that name 'Helton' as many times as you can possibly do it," Tracy said. "The contribution that this man has made

Troy Tulowitzki is conflicted. He is the Rockies' best player - and the reason they aren't leading their division. He's the team's pulse - and why their heart has skipped a few beats. Tulowitzki's performance the last four years has done wonders for his hold on the public. The shortstop will find out today if he's the first Rockie to be voted a National League starter for the All-Star Game since Todd Helton in 2003. He wants the honor, but wants better for his team, for himself. "It would be special. But I know I haven't had the year I expected. I still have time to make up for it, and I have been known to have some big second halves," Tulowitzki said. "I am not in a bad spot, but when

It was no longer just the elephant in the room. Purple polka-dotted dinosaur was more like it. Everyone from Dinger to sports talk radio's first-time caller, longtime listener knows the Rockies haven't hit. Confronted with the ugly numbers and a potentially crippling end to an ugly trip, hitting instructor Carney Lansford had a choice. Dwell on the negative, something that hasn't gone over particularly well in the clubhouse of late. Or break out a verbal can of Febreze. "We had a quick hitters' meeting and he just told us to treat today like opening day, that it was a fresh start for everyone," said shortstop Troy Tulowitzki . Want to know why Tulowitzki is such a great shortstop and plays every inning for the Colorado Rockies as if he's trying to prove a point to the world? Want to know why Tulowitzki is the best Bay Area-produced player in the major leagues today? You should probably go find Lyle Wesley. Wesley's name came up Saturday at AT&T Park during a conversation with Tulowitzki, who went 3 for 4 and drove in the winning run during the Rockies' 2-1 victory over the Giants. That was business as usual for Tulowitzki, of course. His story has been well-documented. As a native of Sunnyvale and

Troy Tulowitzki landslide leader in NL all-star votes at shortstop

Troy Tulowitzki is the landslide leader at shortstop in the National League in fan voting for the All-Star Game, attracting 975,777 votes to 454,782 for runner-up Jimmy Rollins of the Phillies. Right about now, Tulowitzki, second overall to Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols in the voting, would give away every one of those votes for a win. "Without a doubt," Tulowitzki said. "I don't play this game to get the all-star votes and go to as many All-Star Games as I possibly can. I play to win games for the Rockies. That's my job and we're not successful with that right now. That's the kind of stuff is what I care about the most." Tulowitzki would become the fourth Rockies player voted into

Losing keeping Tulo up at night

The nightmare at the ballpark is keeping Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki awake at night. He can't hit. He can't win. He can't sleep. "I'm the first one to blame myself. I'm not getting it done. And there are some other guys who are good players who aren't getting it done," Tulowitzki said Thursday after a 6-3 loss to Arizona dropped the Rockies' record to 7-17 during the miserable month of May. "I'm as hard on myself as anybody is on me. I go home, and I'm the one not sleeping, thinking about the game, thinking about how we can improve our team and win. It definitely bothers me." Sure, there remains much baseball to be played. But it is win-or- else time for Colorado. "We have to start

Rockies' Tulowitzki has no regrets about ejection
May 22
Denver Post
"
A day later, Troy Tulowitzki had no regrets. Some fans and most enemies criticized the all-star shortstop on message boards and Twitter for getting tossed in the eighth inning Friday night. The Rockies were already short-handed because of injuries to Todd Helton and Carlos Gonzalez. Tulowitzki didn't feel any need to apologize. "Sometimes you have to stick up for yourself and your team," Tulowitzki explained. "It was the heat of the moment. I am a passionate player." Tulowitzki's second ejection was traced to a previous at-bat when the normally precise Zack Greinke fired a pitch behind Tulowitzki. Plate umpire Rob Drake told Tulowitzki it wasn't intentional, catching him off guard since it

"We've played defense with the best of them, I'll tell you that." Tulowitzki says this year's team is starting to remind him of the 2007 team that went to the World Series. "The more you play close games, the more you learn how to win them," Tulowitzki said. "It's exactly what happened in '07. We won close games because we got solid outings from our
