Hawes the odd man out for Sixers
May 22
Courier-Post
"
Before Game 5, 76ers coach Doug Collins said Elton Brand's neck and shoulder were still bothering him, and that he planned on going to Lavoy Allen early in Game 5. "His neck looked stiff," Collins said about Brand. "I'm going to keep an eye on him." You couldn't tell after watching Brand have by far his best game in the series. He scored 19 points on 8-for-13 shooting. This after he scored just 17 points in the first four games combined. Brand played 30 minutes, surpassing his previous high in minutes played this series by 12. That was a total Brand matched in the first half, when he had 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting.

Sixers Youth Prevails
May 15

"
The game was going down to the end. This was where the Boston Celtics were supposed to take over, use their experience and their veteran leadership to put away the young and inexperienced 76ers. Boston had done this in Game 1 Saturday, overcoming a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Sixers by a point. And the Celtics were poised to do it again in Game 2 Monday. Yet there was rookie Lavoy Allen banking in a long jumper as the shot clock was about to expire with four minutes left to break a tie. There was Jrue Holiday hitting a 3-pointer with 1:57 left, which came right after the Celtics' Avery Bradley hit one to give Boston the lead.

Hawes has proven himself 'Hawesome'
May 7
Courier-Post
"
Spencer Hawes was asked if this is the best stretch of his career. Hawes didn't take long to say that he hopes not, that it's only two games. Nonetheless, these have been two very good games for Hawes, the 76ers' 7-foot-1 center. He scored 22 points with eight rebounds Sunday in the Sixers' 89-82 win over the Chicago Bulls in Game 4 of this Eastern Conference quarterfinal. This came after he had 21 points and nine rebounds in Game 3. Hawes' previous high-scoring game in the playoffs was 12 points through seven games.

Sixers need more from Hawes in Game 2
May 1

"
While Sixers coach Doug Collins contemplates what to do with his backcourt, he also has to figure out how to use center Spencer Hawes. Hawes, the fifth-year seven-footer, would seem to be an important piece for the Sixers in the series against the Bulls since rebounding and solid midrange shooting will be so important. However, when it came to getting Hawes off the bench in Game 1 of the series on Saturday, Hawes did more sitting than anything else. Hawes played just 15 minutes with only 10 of those minutes coming when the game still hung in the balance. He made just two shots and had four rebounds and didn't have much influence on the outcome at all.

Minutes continue to dwindle for Sixers' Hawes
April 29

"
For Sixers coach Doug Collins, the first-round series against the Bulls was going to come down to which team controlled the boards. Given that the Bulls led the NBA in rebounding this season, neutralizing the glass was sure to be a tall task for the Sixers. So it makes one wonder why Collins played his opening day center Spencer Hawes so sparingly in Game 1? Hawes saw just 10 minutes of action for the first three-and-a-half quarters before bolstering his final total by playing the final five minutes of the game. He missed the only shot he took in his first 10 minutes on the court and picked up a rebound and a pair of fouls. Whether or not Hawes could have made a difference on the boards is

Long-linked, Young and Hawes thrive as reserves
April 13

"
Like an old-timey NBA veteran, Thad Young, still just 23 and five years into his career, can spin a yarn or two. Ask him about the first time he dunked in a game, he'll explain how the lane parted and he exploded toward the basket all doe-legged and knees knocking before throwing in down. He also can recall pickup games he played during his AAU days or during the practices leading up to the McDonald's High School All-American game. But when Young tells some of those stories, sometimes he'll end them with, "Ask Spencer. He was there."

Angry Hawes guides Sixers to win over Nets
April 11

"
To say that Spencer Hawes was disappointed about being moved to a reserve role would be a disservice to the emotion of anger. In fact, Hawes was so ticked off about head coach Doug Collins' lineup shakeup for Tuesday's game against the Nets that he was downright despondent. To get Hawes through an important game at the Prudential Center was going to be a difficult task. Fortunately for Collins and the Sixers, assistant coach Jeff Capel had a perfect solution. In order to get Hawes to best handle the de facto demotion and clear his mind for the game against the Nets, Capel told the center to go and trash his hotel room.

Collins yanks Turner, Hawes from lineup
April 11
Courier-Post
"
Doug Collins lived up to his word of giving Sixers starters one more chance to get themselves together. When it didn't work in Sunday's 24-point loss to the Boston Celtics, the Sixers coach made two changes before his team played the New Jersey Nets on Tuesday. The first was starting Jodie Meeks in place of Evan Turner, and the second was starting rookie Nikola Vucevic at center in place of Spencer Hawes. Collins said he felt like he had to do something as the Sixers came into the game having lost four straight and 10 out of 14, falling to the final playoff spot in the East, just 1½ games ahead of ninth-place Milwaukee.

Hawes, Iguodala set for Sixers' weekend action

Take the restrictions off of Spencer Hawes and Andre Iguodala… sort of. With a pair of games set for Friday and Saturday night, Sixers head coach Doug Collins and his starting center say there are no more restrictions limiting the player in terms of back-to-backs and minutes. However, Collins says he doesn't want to have Hawes play full throttle just because the doctor's restrictions have been lifted. "I'm still going to try and keep his minutes around the same," Collins said after Thursday's practice at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. "That doesn't mean we get into a game and I don't play him for 32 [minutes] or something like that — I can't be too concerned about that.

The Sixers met their match Wednesday night at the Conseco Field House when they faced a team just as tough defensively as they are. But in the end it was Pacers that had a hotter hand than the Sixers in a 111-94 defeat (see Lynam's Instant Replay). "They shot great tonight," coach Doug Collins said. "Their bench really gave them a lift. I mean our bench got outscored tonight, 47-24. That does not happen very often. They were great, hats off. They are a big strong physical team that committed three fouls in the last three quarters of the game, one in each quarter."

Sixers owner Joshua Harris attended the team's practice on Tuesday. Harris works in New York and said he greatly enjoyed walking into his office Monday wearing his 76ers hat after his team beat the Knicks Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden. His New York peers could do little, while he was gloating about the win and the Sixers leading the Atlantic Division. That was fun, but Tuesday's visit was about business. The NBA trade deadline is Thursday at 3 p.m. and Harris wanted to meet with Sixers CEO Adam Aron, president Rod Thorn and head coach Doug Collins. Harris' intent was to make sure everyone was on the same page and felt comfortable about approaching the final 24 games with the

Sixers trainer Kevin Johnson was smiling ear to ear. While most associated with the team had Monday off, Johnson was not among them. He was at the team's practice facility bright and early, watching Spencer Hawes go full tilt in a three-on-three game. Johnson loved what he saw: a healthy Hawes for the first time in nearly two months. Thus the grin. Hawes looked equally happy leaving the gym. "It was great to be back on the court in a competitive setting," Hawes said. "It has been a long ordeal trying to get it right, thinking it was right when it wasn't and now I'm back and it is good for everybody."

Hawes making progress toward return

Spencer Hawes wasn't sure what to expect when he met with a foot specialist earlier this week in Los Angeles. All he knew was he wanted out of the walking boot that he had been using for nearly two weeks. So Hawes was ecstatic when Dr. Richard Ferkel of the Southern California Orthopedic Institute told him that he could put the boot away. Ferkel told Hawes that his strained left Achilles tendon was healing, and that he could start working towards returning to the 76ers.

Sixers' Hawes out at least two more weeks

The Sixers have been without Spencer Hawes for 20 of their first 34 games, but via twitter this afternoon he gave an update on his strained left Achilles tendon, saying he just landed in Philadelphia and was headed to rehab. He also said the protective boot was off and that had him really excited. Hawes saw foot specialist Dr. Richard Ferkel of the Southern California Orthopedic Institute over the All-Star break. Dr. Ferkel's recommended that he remove the protective boot and not play in a game for at least two weeks.

How can Sixers win sans Hawes?

At the risk of equivocating, there are two ways to view the first half of the 76ers' season. On the one hand is their body of work: a 20-14 record, good enough for first place in the Atlantic Division by three games over the New York Knicks. Pretty good. On the other hand, they're in the midst of a season-long, five-game losing streak and have dropped seven of their last nine. Not so good. Two of the more important issues facing the team right now are the health of Elton Brand and Spencer Hawes. Brand has missed four games with a right thumb sprain that may not heal properly until some time over the summer, when he can avoid basketball contact. Nonetheless, reasonable expectations

Last week's two-game run against Atlanta and the L.A. Lakers in which center Spencer Hawes rejoined the Sixers and helped the team to a pair of victories very well could be the last the big man is seen on the court for a little while. Hawes has appeared in just 14 of the Sixers' 30 games this season and only two games since Jan. 16. The 23-year-old, five-year veteran missed a handful of games with a strained lower back during January before injuring his Achilles three games after he returned from the injured back.

Hawes back against Hawks, Brand inactive

After missing 10 straight games, Spencer Hawes declared himself ready to play on Saturday night against the Hawks at Philips Arena. "I'm in," Hawes said. "I'm gonna go." The Sixers' starting center has not appeared in a game since Jan. 16, when he scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in 33 minutes against Milwaukee. In Saturday night's game, Hawes says he will try a different pair of shoes (style, not model) though admits that might just be mental. It was during that game against Milwaukee where Hawes strained his Achilles tendon, something he thought was related to the lower back strain that sidelined him against the Knicks on Jan. 11.

76'ers Hawes' return is still unknown
February 2
Courier-Post
"
Spencer Hawes said he expected to be back last week from his left Achilles strain. Instead, he missed his ninth straight game Wednesday when the 76ers played the Chicago Bulls. That's why he refused to say when he's going to return. "I hope [to be back] as early as possible," Hawes said. "I said I'd be back last week. I'm done with the predictions." Hawes said he ran again Wednesday morning, and he played in 2-on-2 games for the second day in a row. But the Achilles still bothers him when he tries to cut. "It's just not there yet," Hawes said.
"
76'ers Hawes improving, but when will he return?
February 1
CSN Philly

Spencer Hawes had a tremendous start to his season. He was averaging 10.4 points per game and shooting 59 percent from the field. He was grabbing 8.8 rebounds a night and and handing out almost three assists. The Sixers were 10-2 with Hawes as their starting center. All that is great, except that Hawes' play is becoming a distant memory. He has missed eight straight games with a strained Achilles' and the streak is likely to continue Wednesday night when the Eastern Conference-leading Bulls come to town. After the Sixers' practice at PCOM on Tuesday, Hawes was asked when he will know if he is healthy enough to return to game action. “When I can really run,” he said. “If we could just play

Spencer Hawes spent the last hour before Friday night's tip-off with both of his feet plunged into a tub of ice. However, if everything goes the way he is planning he should be lacing up his Nikes instead before the next game. Hawes, sitting out for the sixth game in a row with a strained Achilles, hopes to be able to play against Detroit at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday night. If a return on Saturday doesn't work out, Hawes is targeting Monday night's game against Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic. "Maybe tomorrow, but hopefully for Monday," Hawes said about his return to the lineup. "I want to put it behind me and not think about it anymore." Hawes, the fifth-year center, was off

Spencer Hawes did not play in Friday night's game against the Atlanta Hawks at the Center and depending on what athletic trainer Kevin Johnson says, the Sixers' starting center will not travel with the team to Miami for Saturday night's game. The idea, obviously, is for Hawes to get "around-the-clock treatment" according to head coach Doug Collins. "We don't want to have any setbacks. He won't play [Saturday]," Collins said. "We have to be very careful about this. This is an injury that if you come back too soon, you're going to be right back to where you were." Hawes missed a game last Wednesday in New York because of a lower back strain and missed another on Wednesday against the Nuggets

Absence of ailing Hawes felt by Sixers

"
Spencer Hawes was in street clothes Wednesday night for the second time this season due to injury. The first absence was for a strained back and the second with a strained Achilles. On both nights Hawes was sidelined the Sixers fell in defeat. "The back feels great, but unfortunately they say sometimes when it rains it pours and as soon as the back got feeling better I strained the Achilles," Hawes said after Thursday's practice, one he did not participate in. "It is feeling better today, but it's frustrating to have to sit over there on the sideline, especially in a game that was as exciting as last night."

Sixers' Turner to return, but Hawes ailing?
January 18
CSN Philly
"
True to his word that he will err on the side of caution, Sixers coach Doug Collins kept Evan Turner out of Monday's game because of a right thigh bruise. Turner said he will return to the lineup for Wednesday night's game against the Denver Nuggets at the Wells Fargo Center because the injury feels "100 times better." Turner says he caught a knee on his quadriceps from Wizards center JaVale McGee while trying to slip past a screen. After it occurred, Turner was seen stretching the muscle on the sidelines before heading back to the locker room just before halftime. The second-year guard returned to the game during the second half.

The 76ers weren't going to take a chance with center Spencer Hawes, who has tried playing through a lower back strain the last three games, but aggravating the injury each time. So Sixers coach Doug Collins decided to keep Hawes out of the team's game Wednesday against the Knicks. The Sixers are in a stretch of playing five games in six nights, and Collins didn't want to risk losing Hawes for longer. Tony Battie, the 14-year veteran, started in Hawes' place.

Last season, Spencer Hawes played 35 minutes or more in two of the 81 games he played. The Sixers' starting center averaged only 21 minutes per game during his first year in Philadelphia. Monday night in Portland, the first game of the regular season, Hawes played 39 minutes, finishing with 10 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists. The fact that he was on the floor at all was seriously in question Monday morning. The team held a closed practice on Sunday night when it arrived in Portland. During that session when two sides were scrimmaging, Hawes was making a move in the post against rookie Nik Vucevic when the rookie suddenly fell into Hawes left knee. Thursday's practice was the best the Sixers have had since they returned to the gym last Friday for the start of training camp. Center Spencer Hawes in particular received rave reviews. The gang is all back. Thaddeus Young, signed, sealed and delivered, was on the practice court Saturday while fellow restricted free agent Spencer Hawes was on a plane from Seattle to Philadelphia after accepting the one-year qualifying offer from the Sixers for $4.1 million. By agreeing to the qualifying offer, Hawes will be an unrestricted free agent in July 2012. "He didn't show up today because Washington got beat by Duke. I want you to tweet that," Collins joked. When Thaddeus Young texted 76ers coach Doug Collins on Friday to tell him that he had agreed to a five-year contract to return to the team, Collins told him to confirm it by texting back a smiley face. To Young, that was so 2008, but he didn't mind, even though he called the request "weird." Young had a smile about as wide as the one he texted Collins after going through his first practice Saturday with the Sixers. "I'm proud to be back, happy," Young said. "It's a very, very great feeling to be back with our team. We've got some more chances to get farther than the first round. "I'm definitely very enthused." Frontcourt duo's play not enough in loss

Elton Brand's first playoff double-double in almost five years helped the Sixers' frontcourt hold its own against the Heat -- at least from the offensive side. But the extra scoring punch wasn't enough to get them past the Heat. And at this point, it's fair to wonder if they've got enough to get there. Brand and center Spencer Hawes, neither nearly as effective in the two losses in Miami as they were Thursday night, came home and combined for 33 points and 17 rebounds to give the Sixers some much-needed inside presence. The overall results weren't any different, though, as the Heat pulled to a 3-0 series lead in the opening round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. "EB [Elton Brand] was

It's an innate reaction. When fans see their team's center creeping out toward the three-point line, they groan in frustration. After all, shouldn't the centerpiece of the lineup stay near the center of the action? Before Friday night's game against the Los Angeles Lakers, 76ers coach Doug Collins pleaded with the fans to give center Spencer Hawes a longer leash than they might have given last season's center, Samuel Dalembert, or most other centers. The Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to swap Samuel Dalembert to the Sacramento Kings for Andres Nocioni and Spencer Hawes, two league sources told ESPN.com. The deal was agreed to on Tuesday night and the two teams have been working out details Thursday morning. Barring some last-minute hitch the trade should be completed as early as Thursday afternoon, according to the sources. The deal will give the Kings a player they've long coveted in Dalembert. The Kings tried to make several deals with the Sixers last year for Dalembert but couldn't make it happen. Sacramento has been unhappy with its rebounding and shotblocking in the post. Spencer Hawes' trip to the Pacific Northwest resulted in some good news regarding his injured left knee. The doctor who has operated on him in the past won't have to do so again. Hawes visited Dr. Lawrence Holland in Seattle for a second opinion on his knee Friday. Holland performed arthroscopic surgery on Hawes' left knee in 2007 before his rookie season and a microfracture procedure when he was 14. Hawes suffered a deep bone bruise in the back of his left knee and an irregular signal in the joint

The Kings' string of injuries continues. The latest to go down was Spencer Hawes, who left Tuesday's 102-95 loss to the Indiana Pacers with a left knee bruise. "He's pretty sore," Kings coach Paul Westphal said. "He's almost certainly out (tonight at Minnesota)." Hawes said he was kneed in the back of his knee. He missed Sunday's loss in Cleveland because of a lower back strain. The Kings also were briefly without forward Carl Landry Tuesday. His temporary bridge was knocked loose in the second quarter, but he returned in the second half and finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Omri Casspi (virus) did not play Tuesday. He was ill during Sunday's game in Cleveland but managed 22

Filling out a lineup card isn't so hard when there are nine healthy players. Coach Paul Westphal should have more choices today as the Kings expect three of their injured players back for today's game against the Indiana Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse. Guard Tyreke Evans (concussion), center Spencer Hawes (lower back strain) and forward Jon Brockman (knee) are expected back in the lineup after missing Sunday's game against Cleveland. Evans has missed the last five games. He tried to play Friday in Boston. But after feeling dizzy during last Thursday's practice, he was held out an extra two games. Brockman has missed 20 games because of a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right

Spencer Hawes continues to receive praise for his defense. He blocked three shots in the Kings' 102-89 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday at Staples Center. Hawes also grabbed 10 rebounds while scoring 13 points. Kings coach Paul Westphal repeated his belief that statistics aren't always the best measure of Hawes' effectiveness. "In general, Spencer's understanding his team defensive responsibilities better, and he's embracing the things he has to do to show improvement," Westphal said. "And that's the thing I'm caring about." Hawes wouldn't take credit for Clippers All-Star center Chris Kaman being held to 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting. Hawes said he's just taking to the Kings'

One day after Spencer Hawes was benched for making "detrimental" comments about Paul Westphal's inconsistent lineups and rotation, it was unclear if the Kings center was out of the coach's doghouse. "I think I have a good relationship with Spencer, but we've talked about those kinds of things before, and I think that what he said was detrimental to the team, and we're not going to have those kinds of comments," said Westphal, who spoke before a larger-than-normal media gathering at the team's practice facility. In a story in Tuesday's Bee, the third-year center was one of three players who detailed the difficulties of Westphal's changing lineups and substitution patterns.

Spencer Hawes isn't injured. But when he showed up Tuesday evening at Arco Arena, his No. 31 jersey wasn't hanging in his locker. Hawes, the Kings' third-year and sometimes-starting center was inactive for Tuesday's game against the Detroit Pistons. "I saw where he's having a hard time understanding his role," said Kings coach Paul Westphal. "He should understand it (after) tonight." Westphal said there was no specific reason for putting Hawes on the bench. Hawes has been vocal at times this season about his fluctuating minutes and changing roles.

If you glanced at the box score, you wouldn't know Spencer Hawes actually played well while Saturday's game was still in doubt. Considering the Kings fell to the Miami Heat 115-84 at American Airlines Arena, it's hard to imagine they were ever in the game. But with a dunk, Hawes brought the Kings within two points, 33-31, with 9:55 left in the second quarter. The Heat responded with a 19-4 run. So there was nothing to brag about after a 14-point, seven-rebound effort off the bench for Hawes. "No, it's not a very nice consolation prize," Hawes said. Kings coach Paul Westphal didn't offer a harsh critique of Hawes after the game. But he also wasn't going to overreact to good stats in a

Saturday night's game was the kind where giving the Kings a moral victory would almost seem appropriate. Tyreke Evans, the team's leading scorer with Kevin Martin out, didn't play because of a sprained right middle finger and a sore right ankle after Friday night's loss in Dallas. They were in the second of back-to-back road games but led entering the fourth quarter before eventually falling 113-106 to the Houston Rockets at the Toyota Center. But the Kings don't want any pats on the back. They wanted the win, not their third consecutive defeat. "You can give out consolation prizes," said center Spencer Hawes. "We played well, our effort was good, but at the end of the day what we want the

No one can say Spencer Hawes looks at his performance through rose-colored lenses. When asked to assess his progress nine games into his third season, the Kings center was blunt. "Not terribly excited," Hawes said. "But I think that has mostly to do with offensive stuff, shooting the ball. But the other things I'm feeling pretty good about." While the other things – rebounding, defense and setting screens – have drawn praise from the coaching staff, Hawes has been inconsistent on offense. Hawes has made just 41.8 percent of his field-goal attempts. One of Hawes' strengths is his outside shooting, but the 7-foot-1 center is 0 for 12 on three-point shots. Hawes, however, is second on the

It's not how Spencer Hawes wanted to start the exhibition season. The third-year center missed Wednesday night's game against the Portland Trail Blazers at Arco Arena because of a sprained left ankle. The injury occurred when rookie guard Lanny Smith landed on Hawes' ankle during a practice last week. So rather than battle the likes of Greg Oden and LaMarcus Aldridge again, Hawes watched a night after playing against the Blazers in their exhibition opener Tuesday night in Portland, Ore. "It's not healing as fast as I'm used to or as I would hope," Hawes said. "I guess the silver lining is it is preseason. It had been feeling better a couple of days ago." It felt healthy enough for Hawes

Former Huskies Jon Brockman and Spencer Hawes reunited with Kings

Spencer Hawes was preparing to jet home to Seattle last month when he got the news: Jon Brockman, his good friend and former Washington teammate, had been drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers, then traded to the Sacramento Kings. Hawes and Brockman had been teammates since their AAU days with Seattle's Friends of Hoop. They won national summer tournaments together. They won Pac-10 games together. Now they were going to be reunited in the NBA in Sacramento. Hawes, the Kings' center, was so excited he still was text-messaging friends when he settled into his first-class seat that night and, as the plane was about to push back from the gate, a flight attendant asked him to shut off his

Jon Brockman rushed his burly frame down the floor at UNLV's Cox Pavilion early Wednesday afternoon, the Kings rookie forward sprinting before stopping just in time to be leveled by what appeared to be a classic charge. First-year coach Paul Westphal, not far away, offered his enthusiastic approval during the Kings' first summer league practice. "That's what I like to see, Jon Brockman," Westphal said. Westphal was happy with one former Husky, at least. The coach was among those disappointed that his other Washington product - third-year center Spencer Hawes - unexpectedly decided to skip the summer session. Geoff Petrie was none too thrilled either, as the Kings basketball president was

No Kevin Martin. No Beno Udrih. No answer for J.R. Smith and his record-setting barrage of three-pointers. No chance, realistically, of slowing the Denver Nuggets in their quest to win the Northwest Division. And, yes, Spencer Hawes injured his left knee. Can't the season just end already? On a night the Kings received a season-best performance from Bobby Jackson and a career-best effort by Ike Diogu (did you even know he plays for Sacramento?), what they really wanted was to catch their breath and slip out of the Mile High City after a 118-98 loss, desperately hoping Hawes' injury isn't more serious than a mild strain. But knees are knees. Ligaments, tendons, cartilage. Sprains. Strains.

Spencer Hawes turns 21 in a few weeks. I know. It's hard to believe. It seems as if the precocious center with the huge personality, the boy King who has something to say about everything from Sarah Palin's future (thumbs up) to the Seattle SuperSonics' relocation to Oklahoma City (thumbs down) has been around for years, not merely two NBA seasons. "He's only 20?" a surprised Yao Ming asked the other night, his eyebrows arched. "Really? I think he has gotten much, much better. He recognizes who is open, sees the game. He runs the floor. And there are a lot of great shooters in this league, but not with that size." Size. Skill. Smarts. No more doubts. Hawes has all the tools. He also has a

Spencer Hawes isn't one for innuendo. He's more the billboard type. As the Kings' second-year center strolled through Ford Center on Sunday, his message was clear from the yellow suit and green dress shirt to the Space Needle tie. "I was a big Sonics fan growing up, born and raised in Seattle," Hawes said. "I think it's a travesty that they were taken away after 40 years, and this is my way of showing it." And his public display of his disdain for the franchise's relocation to Oklahoma City didn't begin when he walked into Ford Center. Hawes wore a SuperSonics jersey on the team flight. "I left my (Gary) Payton (jersey) back at home," said Hawes, who had 15 points and six rebounds against

There is nothing bland about Spencer Hawes. If he were an entrée, he would be a 7-foot-long hot dog smothered in mustard and onions. He always has an answer - or at least something to say - and has long possessed the skills to become a quality NBA center. But he is only 20 years old. Sometimes we forget. Sometimes, he forgets. He doesn't know more than his coaches. He hasn't outplayed Brad Miller. He hasn't earned the right to whine to the referees with the perfected high pitch of a seasoned veteran. And he hasn't provided enough details for Kings officials (or anyone else) to complete his professional portfolio. Is he merely a slick-shooting big man who throws pretty passes? Is he an
