Shaun Hill News & Rumors

Preseason or not, Lions quarterback Shaun Hill will sacrifice body for a 'flippin' touchdown
"No one will ever accuse Shaun Hill of having John Elway's cannon-like arm, but the Detroit Lions' 10-year veteran quarterback has the moxy of the Denver Broncos Hall of Famer. When Hill dropped back in the second quarter of Detroit's first preseason game against Cincinnati, the Lions were facing third-and-goal from the Bengals' 7-yard line. He couldn't find an open receiver, but saw some space on the right side, so he took off running. With two defenders approaching the goal line, Hill had a choice: Play it safe and give himself up with a slide - the Lions had a 14-3 lead and kicker Jason Hanson would've had a chip shot to tack on another three points - or dive for the end zone. Hill chose"
Shaun Hill continues to carry a heavy heart
"Detroit Lions quarterback Shaun Hill is back at training camp and doing his best to get back to his normal life, but he knows that isn't possible. In late January, Hill and his father, Ted, were working together on the roof of Shaun's barn in Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., when tragedy struck. Ted Hill fell from the roof - "Just out of arm's reach,'' Shaun said - and died from his injuries. "I'm doing well, it's good to be back at work and being able to focus on something else. For myself and my family, we went through the grieving process - we're still going through the grieving process the right way,'' Hill said. "If there is such a thing as a healthy grieving process, I think we've done it."
Lions backup QB Shaun Hill trying to heal after loss of father
"Most days when he finished elementary school, Shaun Hill headed to Parsons High to spend time with his father, Ted, the head basketball coach and an assistant football coach at the Kansas school and one of Hill's closest friends. "That was my babysitter," Hill said Tuesday. "Watching practice, goofing off on the sidelines and all that stuff so, yeah, he taught me everything. "He always still wanted to be coach. Sometimes I would hate talking to him on Sunday after a game, but now I look back and just wish I could again. He was a remarkable man and a father figure to so many people other than just myself and my brother, so he'll be missed by many." Speaking publicly for the first time since"
Lions QB Shaun Hill grieves for father, who died in January fall
"Lions quarterback Shaun Hill wondered Tuesday if he would ever feel completely normal again, and he wasn't talking about his back, which is healing after minor surgery last Wednesday. On Jan. 31, Hill and his father were working on the roof of a barn at Hill's home in Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., when Ted Hill fell to his death. "I still think about him every day," Hill said. "You do wonder if you will ever feel normal again, but at the end the day I feel like, I had 31 years with an unbelievable father and I am very blessed about that." Ted Hill, 60, coached Shaun three years at Parsons High in Kansas. He was also the basketball coach. "He taught me everything," Hill said. "My elementary"
Father of Lions quarterback was 60
"The father of Detroit Lions quarterback Shaun Hill died Saturday following an accidental fall, according to Carson-Wall Funeral Services in Kansas. Ted Hill died late Saturday afternoon at St. John's Medical Center in Springfield, Mo. He was 60. He was helping his son work on a barn in the area when he fell, according to broadcast media reports. Ted Hill worked and coached in the Parsons District Schools in Kansas from 1975 until retiring about five years ago. He was principal of Erie High School in Kansas from 2005-08. He most recently was Title III project director for Labette Community College."
Lions' Shaun Hill's dad dies after a fall at QB's home
"Ted Hill, the father of Lions quarterback Shaun Hill, died Saturday at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Mo., hospital spokesman Mike Peters said Sunday night. An obituary on the Carson-Wall Funeral Services Web site said Hill died at 4:55 p.m. Saturday after an accidental fall. Friends said the accident occurred when Ted was helping Shaun work on a barn at Shaun's home at the Lake of the Ozarks. "I talked to Shaun, I texted Shaun (Saturday) night," said Don Barcus, who coached football with Ted at Parsons (Kan.) High and will be a pallbearer for Thursday's funeral. "Shaun texted me back and said my dad is the greatest person in the world. They had a very close relationship -- he did"
Shaun Hill, in as Detroit Lions' starting quarterback, hopes to have Calvin Johnson vs. Vikings
"It has been that kind of a year for the Detroit Lions: As soon as they get their quarterback situation straightened out, another key position becomes unsettled. Lions coach Jim Schwartz said Wednesday that Shaun Hill will be the team's starting quarterback Sunday when they close out the regular season against the Minnesota Vikings at Ford Field. Unfortunately for Hill, he might not have his most dangerous weapon: receiver Calvin Johnson. Johnson suffered an ankle injury in the second half of Detroit's 34-27 win against the Miami Dolphins last week and didn't practice Wednesday. It's possible he won't practice all week but still could play Sunday. Whether he practices, he likely will be a"
Drew Stanton, Shaun Hill continue to share reps for Detroit Lions
"Drew Stanton took the No. 1 reps at today's Detroit Lions practice, but the overall reps were split between Stanton and Shaun Hill. Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said he'll wait until the weekend before naming a starter. Hill has missed three weeks with a broken right index finger but is the odds-on favorite to start. If he can't go, though, Stanton - despite the left shoulder he separated last week - will get the call."
QB Shaun Hill in line to start for Lions on Sunday
"Quarterback Shaun Hill worked with the first team at Detroit Lions practice today and appears in line to start Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins. Hill has not played since breaking his right index finger in the Lions' Thanksgiving Day loss to the New England Patriots. "I'm just going to push it and hope to be the guy," he said. Drew Stanton, who's 2-1 as a starter the last three games, worked second in the rotation despite a separated left (nonthrowing) shoulder. "He showed a lot of toughness playing through it on Sunday and being able to finish the game was big," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. Regular starter Matthew Stafford did not practice today and is expected to miss his"
Lions mum on QB, but Shaun Hill looks like front-runner
"Coach Jim Schwartz probably won't name his starting quarterback until Sunday, but early indications are that Shaun Hill will get the nod. Hill, who broke a knuckle on his right index finger four weeks ago, took first reps at practice Wednesday. He was taking snaps from under center, which he didn't do last week. He still has the finger taped, but he appeared more comfortable making throws. Drew Stanton, who started and won the last two games, practiced despite a Grade 3 separation in his left shoulder. He didn't appear overly limited by the injury. He was able to raise his left arm over his head during stretching exercises."
Shaun Hill takes No. 1 reps at QB for Detroit Lions
"It appears Shaun Hill, who took reps with the No. 1 offense in practice today, will be the starter for the Detroit Lions on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. Hill, who broke his right index finger on Thanksgiving, was very close to playing in last week's game. Drew Stanton, who suffered a left shoulder injury in Sunday's win over the Buccaneers, took No. 2 reps and didn't appear to have any limitations. Safety Louis Delmas, who suffered a concussion on Sunday, did not practice and it's not known whether he's sitting out as a precaution or whether he failed the tests that would medially clear him to return to the field."
Drew Stanton or Shaun Hill behind center for Lions?
"Lions coach Jim Schwartz has a decision to make this week -- start a banged-up third-string quarterback who led the Lions to their first two-game winning streak in three years, or a broken-fingered backup who hasn't played in a month. Schwartz said Monday he hasn't decided who will get the call for this week's game against the Dolphins. Shaun Hill, who's made eight starts this year in place of regular starter Matthew Stafford, is still recovering from the broken right index finger he suffered Thanksgiving Day. Drew Stanton has started the last three games in Hill's place, but Stanton separated his left non-throwing shoulder in Sunday's 23-20 overtime win against Tampa Bay, the Lions' first"
Shaun Hill's forearm is fine, but when Lions QB will play is unclear
"The good news is Shaun Hill's broken left forearm feels fantastic. The bad news, it's been the broken index finger that's kept him out the last two weeks. "Yeah, the forearm feels amazing," Hill said with a chuckle after throwing for the first time since breaking his finger Thanksgiving Day. Coach Jim Schwartz did not announce who will start at quarterback on Sunday at Tampa Bay, which means he's going to give Hill every opportunity to prove he's ready. "I am going to do everything I can throughout the week to see where we are," Hill said. "I am certainly trying (to be ready)." Hill, with the finger still heavily taped, did not take any snaps Wednesday and threw mostly short passes"
Shaun Hill practices, hopes to play Sunday
"Shaun Hill taught himself to throw without using his right index finger when he broke a bone three years ago. It's a skill he's working on again. Hill threw a handful of short passes at Detroit Lions practice today for the first time since re-breaking his finger in a Thanksgiving loss to the New England Patriots. He still had a splint on his hand and was noticeably rusty on some of his passes, but he said he plans to increase his workload daily with an eye on possibly returning for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "It's a little different throwing with it now than it was three weeks ago, so part of it's kind of learning that, retraining myself a little bit," Hill said. "I'm"
QB Hill practices, but Stanton likely starter
"Shaun Hill practiced some today for the first time since breaking his right index finger on Thanksgiving Day, but Drew Stanton still took first-team reps at quarterback for the Lions. Stanton could make his third straight start at quarterback for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He led the Lions on a game-winning fourth-quarter drive in Sunday's 7-3 win over the Green Bay Packers. Hill practiced with tape on his finger, did not take simulated snaps under center and did not hand off with his right hand. Rookie Zac Robinson worked second in the quarterback rotation behind Stanton."
Lions QB Shaun Hill to rest injured finger, might return
"When Shaun Hill suffered a broken right index finger three years ago, he tried to play through the injury and paid deeply. He won't be so reckless this time. Hill suffered a broken right index finger at the top knuckle in the first quarter of last week's Thanksgiving loss to the Patriots. He stayed in and finished the game, but won't play Sunday against the Bears and is out indefinitely. "I just kept playing with it (the first time), and it turned my whole joint into bone dust and needed to take a bone out of my left hand to reconstruct that joint," Hill said. "I can't do that on this one. I just can't. Definitely got to make sure that it gets healed." Hill said he plans to return before"
Shaun Hill has broken finger, might miss rest of the season
"Lions quarterback Shaun Hill was wearing a baseball cap instead of a helmet during Tuesday's practice and was sporting a splint on his right index finger. The injury and severity of it were not revealed after the 45-24 loss to the Patriots last Thursday. A league source confirmed late Tuesday that Hill did indeed break his right index finger and might be done for the season. Lions coach Jim Schwartz said he wouldn't address it until after today's practice. "I'm really not going to comment on anything as far as that," he said. "Tuesday is an extra day for us. With the Bears not practicing today it doesn't make any sense for us to talk about it ourselves. It's not so much holding anything"
Injured Lions QB Shaun Hill might be done for the year
"The Detroit Lions are down to their third option at quarterback for the foreseeable future. Shaun Hill broke the index finger on his throwing hand in the first half of last week's loss to the Patriots and could miss the remainder of the season, a person familiar with the situation said. Drew Stanton took first-team reps in practice today and is expected to make his second career start Sunday against the Bears. Hill played through the injury in the second half against the Patriots but was held out of practice today, with tape on his finger. He was not available for comment in the locker room, and Lions coach Jim Schwartz would not divulge details of Hill's injury nor his status for Sunday's"
Shaun Hill says Patriots defender was 'literally trying to break my arm'
"Taking a snap and diving head first into well over 1,000 pounds of men trained to take your head off isn't a natural act. But if Detroit quarterback Shaun Hill had it to do all over again, he'd do it just the same, despite the New England defender who tried to break his left (non-throwing) arm, which was already broken just five weeks ago, against the New York Giants. The play happened with 6:32 left in the second quarter. The Lions had the ball at the Patriots' 2-yard line on third down. Hill took the snap and ran a QB keeper. He picked up the first down, but extended his arms to try to breach the goal line. That's when Hill felt someone trying to break his arm and the ball came loose,"
Lions QB Shaun Hill 'ready to go,' will start vs. Bills
"Coach Jim Schwartz announced Wednesday that Shaun Hill would start at quarterback on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. "Shaun has been cleared, there should be no limitations," Schwartz said. Hill, who is three weeks removed from surgery on his left forearm, seconded that, saying he could do everything, from handing off with the left hand, to taking snaps from under center and being able to fall on the left arm. "Absolutely ready to go," Hill said. Schwartz also reiterated what he said on Monday, that surgery was not an option for Matthew Stafford, who suffered a second injury to his right shoulder on Sunday. Essentially, Schwartz said they were going week to week with him. He also"
Lions QB Shaun Hill tests injured forearm in practice
"In the short segment of practice the media was allowed to watch Wednesday, Shaun Hill took first reps at quarterback. He took snaps out of the shotgun, not from under center, but he did hand the ball off with his left hand. Hill is three weeks removed from surgery to repair a broken bone in his left forearm. He had his left arm wrapped from the wrist to above his elbow. If Hill can't play, Drew Stanton would start at quarterback."
Shaun Hill returns to Detroit Lions practice, status for No. 2 unknown
"Detroit Lions backup quarterback Shaun Hill, who broke his left forearm three weeks ago, returned to practice today. Hill took part in some drills, but his status for Sunday's game is unknown. The Lions don't have any concerns about his ability to throw the ball but he'll have to show that he can take snaps and hand the ball off before he's named as the No. 2 quarterback on game day. If Hill isn't ready, Drew Stanton will remain at No. 2 with receiver Derrick Williams serving as the emergency quarterback."
Lions' Shaun Hill suffers fractured left arm vs. Giants
"Lions quarterback Shaun Hill suffered a fractured left arm against the New York Giants today just before halftime. Hill was hit by Giants' defensive tackle Barry Cofield on an incomplete with just over a minute to play in the second quarter. After a Lions timeout, he ran off the field and into the locker room for further evaluation. Drew Stanton replaced Hill, completed 3-of-5 passes for 20 yards, and Jason Hanson made a 50-yard field goal as the half expired."
Lions QB Shaun Hill has broken left forearm
"Lions quarterback Shaun Hill suffered a broken left forearm during Sunday's game against the New York Giants. Hill is right-handed, so his comeback will be sooner than if he broke his right arm. He may be out 4-6 weeks. Hill completed 9 of 15 passes for 91 yards and one touchdown before the injury. He was replaced by Drew Stanton."
Shaun Hill's scrambling skills gaining respect
"No one would confuse Shaun Hill for Michael Vick, but with defenses focused on stopping Calvin Johnson first and Jahvid Best second, the Lions quarterback has scrambled for big plays each of the past two games. Hill, expected to make his fifth straight start Sunday in place of the injured Matthew Stafford, was the team's leading rusher two weeks ago against the Packers with 53 yards on four carries. He converted two third-and-6s in the game, rumbling 40 yards for a first down in the third quarter and 7 yards for another in the fourth. Last Sunday against the Rams, Hill slipped out of the pocket for an 8-yard gain on the first offensive play of the third quarter. All three runs have come"
No regrets for Lions quarterback Shaun Hill on being locked in to Detroit next season
"The question had already been asked and answered several weeks ago, but Detroit Lions quarterback Shaun Hill understood why it was being asked again. "I know exactly why you're asking, but I don't regret it at all. I'm still very ecstatic that I'm here for another year,'' Hill said. No regrets at all about signing a one-year extension with the Lions -- which will carry him through the 2011 season? "No, absolutely not,'' he said. Whether it's injuries or just unacceptable performances, there have been a lot of quarterback changes in the NFL this season. It's pretty clear a veteran with a winning record as a starter (11-9) and a reputation as an excellent decision-maker could find a starting"
Will it be Matthew Stafford or Shaun Hill at QB for Lions Sunday?
"Lions coach Jim Schwartz played coy about his starting quarterback Wednesday, but Giants defensive end Justin Tuck wasn't buying. "We've been preparing for Shaun Hill," Tuck said in a conference call. "We expect to see him solely." Schwartz did not name Hill his starter Wednesday, as he has done every week since Matthew Stafford sprained his throwing shoulder in Week 1. Stafford has not practiced since the injury, though he did throw lightly with backup QB Drew Stanton on Wednesday. Hill played his first turnover-free game in Sunday's win over the Rams, but he'll have his hands full this week against the NFL's top-ranked defense and one of the best defensive lines. He might also be without"
Giants prepare for Lions' Shaun Hill, not Matthew Stafford
"The Lions can be as coy as they want about the status of starting quarterback Matthew Stafford. The Giants aren't buying any of it. "Honestly, we've been preparing for Shaun Hill," said Giants defensive end Justin Tuck. "We expect to see him solely." Lions coach Jim Schwartz, perhaps to keep the Giants guessing, did not announce Shaun Hill as the starting quarterback as he has at the last four Wednesday press conferences. When asked if that was an indication that Stafford is close to returning, Schwartz said, "It's probably an indication that Matt's making good progress and it's probably too early to make any announcements.""
Lions fans calling for making Shaun Hill the starting QB or a trade option is crazy talk
"Psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud said in 1953: "The great question that has never been answered, and which I have not yet been able to answer despite my 30 years of research into the feminine soul, is 'What does a woman want?' " Well, I can relate. After 30 years of covering the Detroit Lions, the question I can't answer about fans is: What do they really want from the quarterback position? For the first time in generations, the Lions seem to have the ideal situation. They drafted a talented and promising young prospect who should be the face of the franchise for years to come. They also added a solid veteran who has proven he can step in, play at a high level and even win. So what's the"
Shaun Hill shows assertive leadership in Lions' setback
"All quarterback Shaun Hill could think about immediately after his 34-completion, 331-yard passing day Sunday was how badly he wants his teammates to taste a victory. "I feel like the guys fought so hard," said Hill, after the Lions' 28-26 loss to Green Bay. "We deserved that win. We deserve to get the feeling of a win in this locker room. I just feel terrible we haven't got that." Hill, making his third start for injured starter Matthew Stafford, executed a smartly-devised game plan that rolled up 431 yards against a superb Packers defense. "You have to give Shaun Hill credit," said Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. "And their offensive coordinator (Scott Linehan). They had a solid"
Lions QB Shaun Hill on skirmish: 'We're not going to be anybody's punk'
"With the Lions trailing 24-10 in the third quarter, tempers began to flare at the Metrodome on Sunday. Vikings defensive end Brian Robison sacked quarterback Shaun Hill on a third-down play, but neither side left the field as numerous players appeared to throw some punches. "All I could say about that is, we are not going to be anybody's punk out there, you know what I mean?" Hill said. Among the altercations near the Lions' 20-yard line included Hill and Vikings defensive end Jared Allen going at it. All Hill said after the game was "there was something going on." "It just got a little hot and heavy," said Lions guard Rob Sims, who also was in the mix. "It wasn't anything too serious."
Shaun Hill will start at QB again for Lions
"Shaun Hill will make his second straight start at quarterback for the Detroit Lions this weekend against the Minnesota Vikings, coach Jim Schwartz announced today. Hill started in place of Matthew Stafford last week against the Philadelphia Eagles and threw for a career-high 335 yards, but the Lions lost, 35-32. "Matt is doing very well in his rehab, but Shaun Hill will start this game at quarterback," Schwartz said."
Matthew Stafford 'doing well,' but QB Shaun Hill to start again for Lions
"Shaun Hill will start again at quarterback for the Lions on Sunday at Minnesota. "Matt is doing very well in his rehab," was all coach Jim Schwartz would say about the status of starting quarterback Matthew Stafford, who injured his right shoulder at Chicago in Week 1. Stafford talked briefly with reporters. "It's going good," he said. "I am just trying to keep my shoulder as strong as possible. Whenever I am ready to go I will play. It feels better." Stafford still hasn't tried to throw with his right arm. When asked about his range of motion, he raised his right arm over his head. He did not attempt a throwing motion, however, nor did he untie his shoelaces with his right hand. "They"
Lions get passable effort from QB Shaun Hill
"Quarterback Shaun Hill gave the Lions a chance to win against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. In the end, though, he couldn't complete a late comeback after the Lions scored and recovered an onside kick. Hill, making his first start since joining the Lions as a backup this offseason, took over the offense this week in place of the injured Matthew Stafford. Hill completed 25 of 45 passes for 335 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in a 35-32 loss to the Eagles at Ford Field. "As my performance goes I'm pretty simple," Hill said. "I judge myself on wins and losses. We did not win, so therefore my performance wasn't good enough." Hill led a 15-point rally late in the fourth"
Undrafted, Lions QB Hill proved he belongs in the NFL
"No one gave Shaun Hill much of a chance to be here, in his ninth NFL season, starting for the 17th time in a well-traveled career. When Hill entered the league as an undrafted rookie out of Maryland, even his coaches thought he was a charity case. Mike Tice, the coach in Minnesota who signed Hill, was a former Terrapins quarterback, and the running joke was Tice was just doing his alma mater a favor. "When he came in, we thought he had no chance," said former Vikings assistant Charlie Baggett, now the receivers coach at the University of Tennessee and an ex-MSU quarterback and assistant coach. "But he came in and showed a strong arm and showed some leadership ability and some mobility. "He"
Backup quarterbacks will be key as both Eagles, Lions look to avoid 0-2 start
"There's a lot on the line for both the Lions and Eagles at Ford Field Sunday. Both lost their season openers last week and both lost their starting quarterbacks in the process. Starting 0-2 in the NFL isn't necessarily a precursor to a horrible season, but with road trips to Minnesota and Green Bay for Detroit in the next two weeks, starting 0-2 is as close to a death sentence as it gets. Sunday's home opener at Ford Field will feature two teams desperate to get to 1-1, and subplots to make Agatha Christie proud. The Lions lost starter Matthew Stafford to a shoulder injury against the Bears last week and the Eagles' Kevin Kolb was lost to a concussion. In step veterans Shaun Hill for"
Lions QB Shaun Hill good with his status on team
"The first thing you have to understand about Lions quarterback Shaun Hill is that he is a person. Yes, I know, you thought he was an antelope. What I mean is that we tend to view athletes as cartoon characters -- good guy, bad guy, hero, bum -- but Hill basically wants the same things out of a job that you or I might want. Hill turned 30 in January. Like a lot of 30-year-olds, he was past the dreaming stage of his career and heavy into reality. He wanted what most of us want out of a job: a good boss, a clear job description, colleagues he liked. When the Lions acquired Hill from San Francisco last spring, he got all three. "That was part of the thing I was excited about," he said"
Shaun Hill now at the top for Lions
"Shaun Hill has been surprisingly effective in his limited time as an NFL starter -- he has a 10-6 career record -- despite playing on some decidedly mediocre teams. There's a reason for that, Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said. "He probably understands the game better than most quarterbacks do because he really works at it harder," Linehan said. "I don't know that there's any quarterback that prepares any more in a detailed fashion for a game, whether he's starting or a backup." Hill will make his first start as a Lion in Sunday's home opener against the Eagles. He replaces Matthew Stafford, who sprained his right shoulder in last week's 19-14 loss to the Bears. "Shaun's got a"
Lions QB Matthew Stafford misses practice; Shaun Hill will start Sunday
"Matthew Stafford wore a red jersey and a white baseball cap, but the second-year quarterback did not take part in the individual portion of drills at Detroit Lions practice this morning. Afterward, coach Jim Schwartz announced that Shaun Hill will start Sunday's home opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. Hill finished Sunday's season-opening loss at the Chicago Bears after Stafford hurt his right throwing shoulderis not expected to play in Sunday's home opener against the Philadelphia Eagles."
Lions QB Matthew Stafford misses practice; Eagles likely to start Michael Vick
"It looks like the game Sunday will be a battle of the back-up quarterbacks. Michael Vick is taking all the reps with the Eagles first offensive unit Wednesday and Thursday while starter Kevin Kolb tries to pass the necessary post-concussion tests. "We are taking it day by day," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "Kevin's not practicing (Wednesday) and probably not tomorrow. Michael will take all the reps for the next few days." As for Lions' quarterback Matthew Stafford, he walked onto the practice field Wednesday morning and one of the Lions' staffers asked if he was ready to play. "Sure," he said, and then made a throwing motion with his left arm. Stafford, who suffered a second-degree"
Lions' Shaun Hill familiar with backup QB role
"Aside from some understandable fawning over second-year starter Matthew Stafford, Lions quarterbacks have flown mostly under the radar 3 1/2 weeks into training camp. There's no quarterback controversy, no competition for jobs, no drama of any kind. "This is kind of the way you like it," offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said. "If you expect to be good, that's the way it needs to be." Unlike last year, when Stafford and Daunte Culpepper entered camp competing for the starting job, there's no questioning the quarterback hierarchy this year. Stafford is the clear-cut No. 1, now and for the foreseeable future. Shaun Hill is the experienced backup. And Drew Stanton the emergency No. 3. For"
Lions backup QB Shaun Hill gets one-year extension
"The Lions agreed to terms Monday with backup quarterback Shaun Hill on a one-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through 2011. Hill was acquired in March from the San Francisco 49ers in a trade for a 2011 seventh-round draft pick. Hill, 30, is an eight-year veteran with a connection to Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. Hill started in the NFL with Minnesota in 2002 and played three seasons under Linehan while Linehan was the Vikings' offensive coordinator. He spent the past four seasons with the 49ers, going 10-6 as a starter."
Lions sign quarterback Shaun Hill for two years
"The Lions have signed veteran quarterback Shaun Hill to a one-year contract extension through the 2011 season. The Lions acquired Hill, an eight-year veteran, from the 49ers for a seventh-round pick in the 2011 draft this offseason. The upcoming season was to have been the last year on his contract."
Lions backup QB Shaun Hill has teammates talking about his style
"If Matthew Stafford throws fastballs, you might say Shaun Hill throws change-ups. Lions wide receiver Nate Burleson takes it a step further and jokes Hill's delivery is "like from 'A League of Their Own.' " It's side-arm, maybe short-arm, a little like a third baseman's or a catcher's. Coach Jim Schwartz said "it doesn't always look pretty." And it takes some getting used to, as the Lions discovered after acquiring Hill to be the backup quarterback. "It's funny," said Burleson, who once played with Hill in Minnesota. "Some of the guys who have been here, they talk about when the ball's in the air from Hank, they're expecting it faster, so their hands are jumping towards the ball. Because"
Lions' Shaun Hill content as backup, will add 'leadership'
"New Lion Shaun Hill has no grandiose plans of being the team's starting quarterback this season. Hill knows Matthew Stafford has the job locked up, and Hill is fine with that. "My role here is defined and I'm fine with that," he said Wednesday at Lions headquarters. "It was always up in the air (in San Francisco) -- you are or you aren't (a starter). I know my role (here)." Hill, 30, is a nine-year NFL veteran who has played for the Vikings (2002-05) and 49ers (2006-09). The Lions traded a seventh-round pick in 2011 to the 49ers to acquire Hill. "He's obviously very gifted, a very talented guy," Hill said of Stafford. "It's so tough coming in and playing as a rookie, I can't imagine. It"
Shaun Hill: It's best for Lions for Matthew Stafford to play
"Make no mistake about it - Shaun Hill wants to play and he wants to start. After not playing in his first five years in the league, Hill has won 10 games in 16 starts over the last three years for the San Francisco 49ers. When he was traded to the Detroit Lions, though, he knew he had no chance to compete with Matthew Stafford for the starting job. "I'm very competitive and everybody wants to play, but I don't have an ego. I'm a team guy, team first,'' Hill said. "What's best for this team is for Matthew to go out and have a successful season and for me to step in if need be. That's what's best for the team and that's what I'm going to do. I've always been a team guy. Even when things went"
Former starting QB Hill traded to Lions
"Quarterback Shaun Hill went from odd man out to simply shipped out Sunday. The 49ers traded last season's opening-day starter to the Lions for a seventh-round draft pick. The trade becomes official today when new backup quarterback David Carr arrives to work with a signed contract, according to multiple reports. The 49ers and Carr agreed in principle to a two-year contract last weekend but Carr was out of the country on vacation. A source close to Carr expects him to arrive Monday for the first day of voluntary offseason workouts at team headquarters with his signed contract in hand. In Detroit, Hill will take the same role he had when he came to San Francisco in 2006 - backup to a former"
49ers feed Hill to Lions
"Squeezed out of San Francisco, quarterback Shaun Hill will be throwing passes for the Detroit Lions in 2010. The 49ers have agreed to trade Hill to the Lions for a seventh-round draft pick in 2011, according to a source with knowledge of the deal. Hill, who began last season as the 49ers' starting quarterback, became expendable when the team acquired David Carr at the start of free agency. Hill had been given permission to shop himself around to other teams late last week. Carr has agreed to terms on a two-year deal and is expected to turn in his signed contract today. That, plus Hill passing a physical in Detroit, will make the trade official. Although Hill was 10-6 in games he started"
Lions trade for 49ers QB Shaun Hill
"Lions coach Jim Schwartz said Friday his team was in no hurry to find a quarterback to back up Matthew Stafford. But the Sacramento Bee reported the Lions pulled the trigger on a trade with the 49ers that will send quarterback Shaun Hill to Detroit for a seventh-round draft pick in 2011.
