Shane Battier News & Rumors

Center, point guard, Battier secondary issues for Heat
"Yes, the play has been somewhat ragged at times lately. And, yes, there are concerns at center, point guard and with Shane Battier. But does it really matter? At 18-6, the Heat are just about where you would have expected them. And while recent games have shown is that there are areas of concern, that concern likely is overstated. Why? Because the Heat do not use a center at the ends of games. Because they increasingly have been going without a true point guard at the finish. And because Shane Battier has been stepping aside with games in the balance."
Miami Heat's Battier stuck in cold streak
"With Shane Battier going 0 of 4 from the field Sunday, his shooting percentage on the season dropped to 31.3 percent, the lowest of his career. Battier is heralded for his defensive prowess, but he hasn't been able to contribute much recently on the other end of the court. Not only is Battier adjusting to a new offense, he is only averaging 23 minutes per game, also a career low. "I'm struggling with the age old question of when to pass and when to shoot," Battier said. "That's the basic philosophy on offense. The great Hubie Brown said, 'Know when to pass, know when to shoot,' and I'm finding a way to mess that up.""
Shane Battier big at doing the little things
"Shane Battier enjoys talking basketball. Discussing box scores? Not so much. "Yeah," the veteran Miami Heat forward said with a grin following Wednesday's victory over the Charlotte Bobcats, "if you look at them, you're going to think I'm the worst player in the NBA and I probably shouldn't be in the NBA." He's probably right. Wednesday, he missed both his shots against the Bobcats, grabbed two rebounds in his 20 minutes, and did not have an assist. It was typical of the statistical start he is experiencing since signing with the Heat as a free agent in the offseason. Through the Heat's 3-0 start, he is 1 for 5 from the field, with two rebounds and one assist, being outscored this season"
Shane Battier, Eddy Curry still sidelined
"Miami Heat forward Shane Battier and center Eddy Curry are expected to miss Wednesday's final preseason tuneup against the Orlando Magic as they continue to recover from injuries that have sidelined them during training camp. Both veterans went through conditioning drills as the team practiced Tuesday at AmericanAirlines Arena. Battier is nursing a left quad strain he sustained in practice early last week, and Curry is out with a strained left hip flexor he injured during the second practice of training camp. Battier and Curry will have missed both of Miami's preseason games against Orlando as well as the Heat's public scrimmage last Thursday."
Heat newcomers Battier, Curry likely to miss preseason opener
"Time waits for nobody, not even the Miami Heat. With the start of the regular season just a week away, the Heat will open up their shortened preseason schedule against the Orlando Magic on Sunday at the AmericanAirlines Arena. "It's different going from eight preseason games to two, so we're going to go out and work on stuff that we've been able to put in," forward LeBron James said. "We don't have everything in right now, but what we do have in, we'll go over." Adding to an already difficult situation is the fact that Miami will likely have to play without Shane Battier and Eddy Curry because of lingering injuries. The newcomers also missed Miami's training-camp scrimmage Thursday."
Shane Battier enjoying fast track, open looks with Heat
"As the lone new face in the Miami Heat's primary rotation, Shane Battier is finding himself at ease with both the transition and the opens shots available when playing alongside LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. "There's only so many ways you can slice up the NBA," the 11th-year veteran said of the Heat's offense. "You just call it different things. I feel pretty comfortable. This is a very disciplined offensive team and the principles are fairly basic, it's simple. So for an old head like me, it comes pretty natural." To a degree, Battier feels like he's back with the Houston Rockets, during his days alongside Yao Ming, before the towering center was sidelined by a series of"
Free agent Shane Battier to sign with Miami Heat
"The Heat will begin training camp Friday with at least one new player. NBA free agent Shane Battier is joining the team. Battier, a small forward, announced his plans on Twitter on Thursday morning. Then, in a moment of inspiration, he cited Jimmy Buffett: "This was an exciting process and after much deliberation, I would like to quote the great poet Jimmy Buffett and take my chances, 'Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season.'?""
Memphis Grizzlies' Shane Battier to sign with Miami Heat
"Shane Battier is taking his talents to South Beach. The free agent forward, who helped the Memphis Grizzlies through a historic playoff run last season, used his Twitter account this morning to announce that he'll sign with the Miami Heat. Teams can begin to sign free agents at 1 p.m. Friday, which is also when training camps open. "Over the last week, I've played out every scenario in my head over and over. It always came back to one thing for me: a winning role," Battier wrote on Twitter. "I am appreciative of all the kind words and recruiting pitches over the last week, thank you!!" Battier later added: "Let's Go Heat.""
Shane Battier to sign with Heat
"Needing to upgrade their bench, the Miami Heat have landed a significant addition in veteran Shane Battier. Battier announced on his Twitter account Thursday that he plans to sign with the Heat when free agency opens on Friday afternoon. A number of contending teams had been courting Battier over the last few days, including the Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs. The Heat made Battier a priority and met with him in the first hours of Monday, when teams were allowed to speak with players. Battier, who has had a relationship with Heat CEO Mick Arison since he was the team manager while Battier played at Duke, was attracted to the Heat's potential for winning a title."
Shane Battier says he will sign with Miami Heat
"The notifications came on Twitter shortly before 10 a.m. Thursday. They were from Shane Battier and simple and to the point. The upshot: The versatile veteran swingman at 2 p.m. Friday, the earliest free agents are allowed to sign, will become a member of the Miami Heat. From his timeline: -- "The Lockout gave me a lots of time to consider what was important to me at this stage of my life and career. Over the last week, I've played out every scenario in my head over and over. It always came back to one thing for me: a winning role. I am appreciative of all the kind words and recruiting pitches over the last week, thank you!!" -- "This was a exciting process and after much deliberation, I"
Shane Battier emerges as prime Heat free-agency target
"It once again is time for the bag of rings. Or perhaps the simple reality for the Miami Heat is that Free Agency 2011 does not rise to the level of Pat Riley breaking out the bag of championship rings that closed the team's 2010 deal with LeBron James. Starting Monday, teams can begin making direct, face-to-face pitches to free agents, after being limited to contact with player agents since Wednesday. The post-lockout starting point for free-agent signings remains Friday, which is also when training camps will open in advance of the lockout-shortened 66-game schedule that for the Heat opens Dec. 25 on the road against the Dallas Mavericks. According to Yahoo, the Heat's initial push will"
Battier Narrows It To Handful Of Teams
"Free agent forward Shane Battier has narrowed his list of prospective teams from more than the original dozen or so to a handful of teams, including his current team, the Memphis Grizzlies, Miami, Indiana and Toronto, according to a league source. The 33-year-old, whose defensive skills still are among the league's best, has been one of the most sought-after free agents since teams were allowed to discuss contract parameters last Wednesday."
Free-agent buzz: Heat lead chase for Battier
"Once NBA teams can speak with free agents beginning Monday, Miami Heat president Pat Riley has his franchise in strong position to sell Shane Battier on signing to play with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Battier has been a primary target in free agency for the Heat, and sources say the pitch of Riley, coach Erik Spoelstra and key Heat players could ultimately confirm Battier's strong feelings about chasing a championship in Miami. Riley and Spoelstra see Battier as a strong defender with an ability to hit the open shots that'll come his way playing with James, Wade and Chris Bosh. Battier has been a proven playoff performer, and possesses the"
Thunder's Kevin Durant, Nick Collison trying to recruit Shane Battier
"Could Shane Battier be headed to Oklahoma City? If Kevin Durant had anything to say about it, the defensive ace would soon join the Thunder for this season. Durant, using the social media site Twitter, on Sunday reached out to Battier, the former All-American and Naismith College Player of the Year at Duke who is now an unrestricted free agent. "Hey @ShaneBattier, just wanted to see how you were doing and what size jersey you wear and also do u still want no. 31?" Durant wrote. Battier, 33, is entering his 11th NBA season. He ended last season with Memphis, his second stint with the Grizzlies after four-plus seasons as a member of the Houston Rockets. Battier was last seen tag-teaming with"
Shane Battier puts blame on NBA players, owners
"With the goal of trying to save an NBA season that would start on Christmas Day, representatives for the league and its locked-out players will meet today to resume negotiations that secretly began Monday. Whenever a deal is struck, Grizzlies free agent forward Shane Battier is convinced that both sides share blame for the league's work stoppage. "It's disappointing on all sides," Battier told USA Today this week. "When we look back at this, there's blood on everybody's hands. I don't think there's one group to blame. In the information age we live in, the communication is the issue which I think is ironic. "Communications between owners and players, players and players, owners and owners."
Rested Shane Battier eager to play
"Shane Battier has enjoyed the extra time spent with his wife, 3 1/2 -year-old son and 6-month-old daughter back in Michigan, courtesy of the NBA lockout. But after 10 years in the league, Battier was looking forward to experiencing his first opportunity as an unrestricted free agent. "Unfortunately, I'm not going to get the wine-and-dine period that usually accompanies free agency, into a routine," said Battier, who was in Memphis on Monday evening speaking at a fundraiser at Beth Sholom Men's Club benefiting the Battier Take Charge Foundation. Originally drafted by the Grizzlies in 2001, Battier was traded to Houston after six seasons in Memphis. Last February, he was traded back to the"
Eddy Curry, Shane Battier on Miami Heat's radar
"Eddy Curry's predicament is clear: If he loses at least 40 more pounds during the lockout, then the Heat likely will have renewed and genuine interest because Pat Riley remains highly intrigued by the 7-foot center. The question is whether he has the discipline to achieve that mighty challenge. Curry, 28, reportedly topped 350 pounds during his late March workout for the Heat. He lost a lot more weight — in excess of 20 pounds — between that point and late June, when he auditioned again for the Heat over several days. But he entered the lockout still at least 40 pounds overweight, according to a league official briefed on the situation. "You watch him shoot and he's got great touch, good"
Midseason trade still irks Battier
"With a 3-year-old and a newborn, Shane Battier doesn't have much time to work on his golf swing. If the NBA lockout lasts into the winter as expected, he will have more free time than usual. But he'd rather not have it. Battier, a free agent whom the Rockets traded to Memphis in February, knows his time in the NBA is limited. The impact of missed games next season isn't going to be diminished by a long-term contact offer. "The end of my career is closer than the start of my career," said Battier, who just finished his 10th season in the league. Though a natural for the broadcasting booth, Battier isn't in a hurry to get there. "I can see myself playing for three or four more years, then"
Battier says 'magical run' carried Grizzlies past Spurs in playoffs
"Even a couple of months after the upset occurred, Memphis forward Shane Battier remains a little suprised the Grizzlies stunned the Spurs in the first round of the playoffs. The Grizzlies' six-game series victory over the Spurs was only the second time since the NBA went to a best-of-seven series for all rounds of the playoffs that a No. 8 seed toppled a No. 1 seed. And it still is a little bit of shock to Battier that it happened, he said in an interview with radio station WFAN in New York City earlier this week. (Hat tip to Sports Radio Interviews.com) "We knew that we had a favorable matchup in the Spurs," Battier said. "Did we think we could beat them and take the Thunder in second"
After Game 7 loss, focus on Grizzlies shifts to free agents Gasol, Battier
"From the money man in Chicago to the people who made the Grizzlies' magical playoff run happen on the court, they were all in agreement on how to keep the good times rolling. Re-sign 7-foot center Marc Gasol and find a deft 3-pointer shooter or two. That, and welcome back injured forward Rudy Gay with his good arm reloaded. Griz owner Michael Heisley normally has his calendar cleared for a date with the NBA draft lottery, which unfolds tonight in Secaucus, N.J. But Heisley spent Monday basking in the reality that his Griz only need a minor tweak -- not a roster overhaul or lottery luck -- to improve on their historic season. The Griz, who won their first playoff games and series, became"
'Delirious' Battier tired but ready after sweet Sunday
"Shane Battier was still at his locker, still answering questions about the winning shot, when Rudy Gay interrupted. "You better check your phone, you're having a baby," he said. Battier laughed. Yeah, right. Teammates are hilarious. Always pulling pranks. Then Steve Novak, a good friend of Battier who plays for the Spurs, burst in the locker room. Novak's wife had been on the phone to Houston. Heidi Battier had been taken to the hospital for an emergency C-section."
Battier's shot puts Spurs in early hole
"Spurs forward Matt Bonner never saw the decisive 3-pointer leave Shane Battier's hand, much less it ripping through the net. "I had Zach Randolph's elbow in my mouth at the time," Bonner said. Bonner had a better view of 3-point tries from George Hill and Richard Jefferson that could have salvaged Sunday's Game 1 against Memphis for the Spurs. "Both looked good," Bonner said. Both bounced off. The difference in the Spurs' 101-98 playoff-opening loss to Memphis at the AT&T Center was the difference in a lot of games and a lot of series. Three players toed the 3-point stripe in the final 30 seconds. One of them made the shot. The others didn't. Battier's 3-pointer with 23.9 seconds left"
Battier buries big 3, Grizzlies top Spurs for first playoff win
"Before the chest-bumping, towel-waving, jump-for-joy celebration after the final buzzer sounded on the franchise's first NBA playoff victory, the Grizzlies stared into each other's eyes to see who was scared and ready to fold. None of them looked the part. The Griz had just lost a seven-point lead in the game's final four minutes. But it was the poise and courage the eighth-seeded Griz showed Sunday afternoon in the last 66 seconds that earned them a 101-98 victory over the top-seeded San Antonio Spurs in Game 1 of their best-of-seven, first-round series. Memphis ended a 0-for-12 postseason drought by scoring seven unanswered points to win the game. Shane Battier, the only player to"
Battier back in postseason
"Uncertain what to expect in the first playoff game of his career, Shane Battier discovered the difference before his first postseason game began. "My very first memory is running out of the tunnel at AT&T Center, having a wall of noise blast me and thinking, 'So this is what they meant when they were telling us how different things are in the playoffs,'?" said Battier, who arrived with his Memphis Grizzlies on Friday to prepare for the team's first-round series with the Spurs. That wall of noise experience was before Game 1 of the Spurs-Grizzlies first-round playoff series in 2004, when Battier was a 25-year-old with three seasons under his NBA belt. It was a brand-new experience for him"
Shane Battier yet to find his rhythm with Memphis Grizzlies
"Shane Battier doesn't have to search for admirers and adulation in these parts. He instantly became a big shot off the court upon his return to Memphis. On the floor, Battier would like to move toward having a similar impact. The most challenging aspect of Battier's reunion with the Grizzlies has come on the offensive end of the court, where his productivity is noticeably less than what he provided to the Houston Rockets. In the 18 games since Battier joined the Griz at the February trade deadline, his scoring average, shooting percentages and shot attempts have dramatically decreased from his days in Houston. He's also playing nearly seven fewer minutes on average. But Battier prides"
Grizzlies fans embrace return of Shane Battier
"Ninety minutes before another Saturday night's work in his 10-year NBA career, Shane Battier pulled on his Houston Rockets red-and-gray colored Chinese-made Peak sneakers and laced 'em tight. He wasn't in the Rockets' Toyota Center, but instead sitting in front of his old Grizzlies' locker in FedExForum, two days after being traded from the Rockets where he had played the last 41/2 seasons. Hanging in the locker was the familiar Griz No. 31 white home jersey that Battier wore the first five years of his NBA career when Memphis advanced to three straight playoffs. Across the locker room, at his old locker next to the showers, was former Griz starting point guard Jason Williams, signed by"
Shane Battier hungry for playoff success in second chance as Memphis Grizzly
"As Ishmael Smith walked around downtown with Shane Battier on Friday afternoon, it didn't take him long to realize Battier's status in the Bluff City. "Shane is a superstar here," Smith said. "He's a rock star. Everywhere I've walked, people say, 'Hey Shane!' I've kind of been the second tier. 'Oh yeah, nice to meet you.' But he deserves every bit of it. I think he's excited to be back here." Shane Battier returns for 'unfinished business' in Memphis Grizzlies' stretch run
"Nearly five years ago, on the day after the Grizzlies traded Shane Battier to Houston, a boy named Austin Miller, 8, tried his best to reverse the deal. Miller was a camper at Battier's basketball camp at Memphis University School. He went home and rubbed his lucky rabbit's foot. "In hopes that Shane would come back," said Austin's mother, Kellie. Well, dang. Think maybe Austin could muster a rub or two for Pau Gasol? Or Derrick Rose, maybe? Or the No. 2 pick who became Hasheem Thabeet? Battier is on his way back to the city that never quite got over him. Can the playoffs be far behind? "I am excited to try to tackle the unfinished business I left in Memphis five years ago," Battier said."
Grizzlies trade Thabeet for Battier
"Shane Battier tried to ignore the flood of text messages and phone calls promoting a juicy trade rumor. But about 15 minutes before the NBA trade deadline Thursday afternoon, Battier's curiosity crossed over to his computer keyboard. "I got online and there was nothing," Battier said. Speculation about Battier re-uniting with the Grizzlies became reality right at the league's 2 p.m. deadline when the Houston Rockets agreed to send him along with guard Ish Smith to Memphis for Hasheem Thabeet, DeMarre Carroll and a lottery-protected, future first-round draft pick. "It was shocking," Battier said. The trade might have been unforeseen but it was the Grizzlies' way of strengthening their"
Rockets trade Battier, Brooks in separate deals
"The Rockets made major changes to their roster at the trade deadline, sending Shane Battier and Ish Smith to Memphis for Hasheem Thabeet and a first-round pick, and Aaron Brooks to Phoenix for Goran Dragic and another pick, according to persons close to the deals. Thabeet, the second pick of the 2009 draft, is considered a long-term project who has struggled in his time with Memphis. The first-round pick was considered the key to the deal. The Rockets had considered sending Brooks to Minnesota for Johnny Flynn, but they opted to take the Phoenix deal instead. The pick from Phoenix is lottery protected. If the Suns don't make the playoffs, the Rockets would get the pick the Suns acquired"
Grizzlies trade Thabeet for Battier; Mayo-to-Pacers deal never completed
"With starting forward Rudy Gay out with a shoulder injury for at least three more weeks, the Grizzlies acquired forward Shane Battier from the Houston Rockets for 2009 No. 2 pick Hasheem Thabeet at the NBA trade deadline today. The Grizzlies thought they had a trade that would send O.J. Mayo to Indiana for power forward/center Josh McRoberts and a first-round draft pick. But the deal was never consummated because the teams missed the NBA’s 2 p.m. deadline. “Despite published reports, O.J. was not traded,” Griz general manager Chris Wallace said in a tweet. The Indianapolis Star reported, on a source basis, that the Grizzlies pulled out of the deal at the last minute. National NBA reporter"
Battier returning to Memphis for Thabeet
"The Houston Rockets have traded Shane Battier to the Memphis Grizzlies for former No. 2 pick Hasheem Thabeet and a first-round draft choice, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Battier was drafted by the Grizzlies with the No. 6 pick in 2001 and spent his first five seasons there. Memphis traded him to the Rockets for Stromile Swift and the draft rights to Rudy Gay(notes) before the 2006-07 season."
Grizz eye Battier return
"As they prepare to make a playoff push over the next five weeks without Rudy Gay, the Memphis Grizzlies have had serious conversations with the Houston Rockets about bringing back Shane Battier, league sources confirmed to Yahoo! Sports. The potential deal, which was first reported by the Memphis Commercial Appeal, would likely send the No. 2 pick of the 2009 draft, center Hasheem Thabeet, to the Rockets. Battier was drafted by the Grizzlies with the No. 6 pick in 2001 and spent his first five seasons there. Memphis traded him to the Rockets for Stromile Swift and the draft rights to Gay. Battier, 32, would give Memphis a quality defender and 3-point threat to help compensate for the loss"
Uncertain Rockets get back to work
"With their season teetering on the brink of collapse and the trade deadline looming ominously just days away, the Rockets reconvened Monday knowing that the next three days could change everything. They begin the post-All-Star break schedule tonight with a road back-to-back, coming off a 1-3 homestand that further reduced their slim margin for error. They head into games against Detroit and Cleveland knowing that the next time they play, they could look very different as a team since Rockets general manager Daryl Morey has been trying feverishly to upgrade the roster before Thursday's trade deadline. "Something is going to happen," guard Aaron Brooks said. "Something will happen. We have"
Sources: Shane Battier in mix for Celts
"Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge has publicly acknowledged the need for backcourt reinforcements thanks to Marquis Daniels' bruised spinal cord and Delonte West's spotty health all season. After the name of Cleveland's Anthony Parker surfaced Friday as a player that Boston has joined conference rival Chicago in pursuing, sources said Monday that the Celtics and Rockets have likewise discussed the prospect of Shane Battier moving East. Battier possesses the ideal combination -- veteran know-how with an expiring contract"
Change is coming, but in what form?
"If you like these Rockets, catch them while you can. Change is coming, possibly dramatic change. The Rockets aren't good enough as they're configured, so general manager Daryl Morey is working furiously to change the configuration. His team needs talent, size, defense and rebounding. Carmelo Anthony appears to be at the top of his wish list, and Morey would trade for him without any guarantee of signing him to a long-term contract. He knows Anthony wants to play for the Knicks, but at this point will take his chances. Morey also has asked about Chris Paul, Josh Smith, DeAndre Jordan, Anderson Varejao and a long list of others. Everyone on the Rockets' roster is available as the NBA's"
A well-deserved rest for Battier
"Pistons coach John Kuester complained about the officiating in the Rockets win Tuesday, and especially about the free throws taken by Kevin Martin. "They got a number of calls that put them on the free-throw line a lot," Kuester said. "I'm amazed Kevin Martin got 15 free throws." He should not be. Of Martin's 15 free throws, five were on technical fouls on the Pistons, including one on Kuester and another for illegal defense. Martin has shot at least 10 free throws in seven games this season. Martin is third in the NBA in free-throw shooting, making 91.7 percent, and takes an average of 8.6 per game. "That's where I live," Martin said. Rockets guard Aaron Brooks stepped up his workouts"
Battier plays Kobe's role
"All the Rockets needed was for Shane Battier to out-Kobe Kobe. Kobe Bryant had drilled one of those turnaround fadeaway jumpers almost no one else should attempt, with Battier's hand rushing toward Bryant's face in time only to wave goodbye. Battier, however, had seen Bryant play this part far too often. This time, Battier changed the final act and stole the show. The 6-8 forward scored 11 straight points in the final three minutes, carrying the Rockets to a 109-99 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night at Toyota Center, giving them a three-game home winning streak. The Lakers' fourth consecutive loss gave them their longest skid since 2007. But Battier thought of all those"
Battier finally back in the building — in a big way
"You could almost hear some little kid in the far reaches of Toyota Center screaming, "Shane! Shane! Come back!" Where was he? This Shane fellow. The one who outplayed Kevin Durant, one of the NBA's young guns, on Sunday night. Was that just a dream? Did Shane Battier simply ride off into the sunset, slumped over after giving all he had? After all, the next night in Dallas, he misfired on almost everything, making just one shot in a Rockets loss. And near halftime against the Lakers on Wednesday, Battier had not made a single basket. With three minutes remaining in the game, he had made only two field goals, and the Rockets looked like they were sitting ducks waiting for Lakers gunslinger"
Battier inspired by Texans' Johnson
"Shane Battier went from one of his worst offensive games of the season to perhaps his best. He made 1-of-9 shots in Charlotte before hitting 7-of-11 to score 18 points, including the game-winning running jumper on Sunday against the Thunder. Battier said he was inspired after seeing Texans receiver Andre Johnson, fresh from his fourth quarter fight with Cortland Finnegan. "I saw the champ," Battier said. "The champ goes from a tough game, showing what it means to be a fighter, coming, sitting courtside at the Rockets tonight. I saw the champ. After the crowd got hyped, I got hyped. The champ is responsible for this win. I will roll with Andre Johnson every day of the week. That fired me up"
Brooks joins Battier as team captains
"As part of his responsibilities as team captain, Shane Battier drafted another team captain, having point guard Aaron Brooks join him for pregame meetings with officials to allow Brooks to talk with them about something other than calls he doesn't like. "Aaron and I have been doing the pregame referees meeting," Battier said. "He was reluctant to do it, but I think it will benefit him." Brooks led the Rockets with nine technical fouls last season. "Learning their names is important," Brooks said. "I never had a conversation with the refs besides them making a bad call. This is a chance to work on that relationship because it matters." Maybe a little nerv-Ish With Kyle Lowry out with back"
Battier hoops with Obama
"If the Rockets spent any time discussing how they spent their summer vacation, forward Shane Battier might have had the most interesting day to describe. Battier spent a day playing pickup basketball with other NBA players and President Barack Obama. "It was one of the coolest experiences of my life," Battier said. "First of all, just the invitation, it was a top-secret mission. I couldn't tell anybody. First of all, my cab drops me off and there's LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade and Magic Johnson and Grant Hill. I was like, "Oh my God. Where am I?" "Even for a casual basketball fan, it was a sweet experience. Then we go to Fort McHenry and go through a bunch of security"
Rockets' Battier out at least 10 days
"Rockets forward Shane Battier will miss at least the next 10 days with a sprained MCL in his left knee. Battier left Sunday's game in the second quarter after he was fouled by Knicks guard Bill Walker while pursuing an offensive rebound and fell over teammate Kyle Lowry, going down hard on the collision. He stayed in the game to take his free throws, but he immediately fouled to stop the clock and headed to the locker room. He underwent an MRI Monday in Chicago that revealed the extent of the damage."
Shane Battier leaves game with hyperextended left knee
"But veteran Jared Jeffries might have been the greatest surprise — and most vital of the players going against their former teams. Playing because Shane Battier went out with a hyperextended left knee in the second quarter, Jeffries drew four charges and blocked two shots in the final 10 minutes. "I was trying to find anybody that wanted to guard somebody," Rockets coach Rick Adelman said."
Battier transitions to reserve role
"In his first three seasons with the Rockets and his first 62 games this season, Shane Battier started all but three of the games in which he played. With the Rockets back at full strength (excluding Yao Ming), he was switched to coming off the bench, an experiment he told coach Rick Adelman he was willing to try. "Shane, No. 1, has no problem with it," Adelman said. "He's told me forever he'll come off the bench, and I told him I'll try it, but I don't know if that's the best thing for our team. What that means is it changes Trevor (Ariza's) role somewhat because now he's got to guard the toughest guy out there who starts the game. The other thing with Shane is he gives me a lot of"
Battier misses Rockets game with flu-like symptoms
"With Shane Battier in the hotel battling flu-like symptoms, Trevor Ariza in Houston and Kyle Lowry in the locker room, the Rockets' defense was reduced to the faint hope the Jazz would miss. They rarely did. When Utah began the fourth quarter with three consecutive 3s, it led by 24, and Adelman began clearing his bench, knowing there was no chance."
Battier playing through pain
"Rockets forward Shane Battier has been playing with a sprained left shoulder that has bothered him since he became entangled with the Spurs' Tim Duncan on Jan. 22, but it became especially painful Friday against the Trail Blazers. "It's still sore as hell," Battier said. "It feels better not getting hit (Saturday). It was good to have a day not running through the screens Juwan Howard and LaMarcus Aldridge were setting." Battier said the pain increased most when he fell after driving to a charge against Aldridge on Friday. On Sunday he said, he was in pain "every time I drove the ball." Rockets center Yao Ming was cleared to work out in basketball shoes for the first time Sunday. He did"
Battier starting to show consistent range
"Shane Battier did not have much explanation for his offensive performance on Tuesday when he made seven of 12 shots, including 5-of-8 from the 3-point arc, to score 20 points, his second-best scoring night of the season. "I'm a post-Christmas shooter," Battier said. "I don't know, I've been like that every year. I don't know why. I'm weird like that." He has made 13 of 25 shots since Christmas, and is making 44.9 percent of his shots in December. His shooting Tuesday, however, might be part of a different streak. In the Rockets' five home games in December, all Rockets wins, he is making 53.6 percent of his 3-pointers. "I like shooting at home," Battier said. "I've always been like that."
Battier battles through tough week
"Shane Battier had one of the toughest weeks a defensive player could have, matching up with Richard Hamilton, Carmelo Anthony, Jason Kidd and Kevin Durant. But he said it was not his toughest stretch. "In four games in five nights, I had Carmelo, Paul Pierce, LeBron (James) and somebody else," Battier said. "That was a hell week." He did not recall who the fourth assignment was, but after the first three, it did not matter who the fourth was."
