Ryan Callahan News & Rumors

Captain Callahan's goal can't bail out Blueshirts
"When his team needed him most, Ryan Callahan played his best. For the Rangers' captain, holding his head high will not be a problem this summer, which starts today after his team lost to the Devils, 3-2, in overtime last night at Prudential Center in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals. "We battled all year," Callahan said as the Battle of the Hudson ended with the Devils headed to the Stanley Cup finals against the Kings. "We fought back in this game, we had some chances in the third and then all of sudden you're done. It's a hard pill to swallow." Callahan scored his second goal in as many games, tying the game 2-2 in the second period. After getting down 2-0 in the first period,"
Gabby, Callahan finally deliver
"Maybe somebody was listening to John Tortorella on Tuesday when he jokingly said the only thing he can do to get his top forwards to score was "pray." Last night at the Garden, during the Devils' 5-3 Game 5 win, the Rangers coach got one goal apiece from two of his best forwards — Ryan Callahan and Marian Gaborik. The closest example of divine intervention was Gaborik's third-period prayer, which went in from a sharp angle, getting jumbled in the feet of Martin Brodeur to tie the game, 3-3, just 17 seconds in. "It's a tough one to give up," said Devils coach Peter DeBoer, whose team takes a 3-2 lead into tomorrow's Game 6 showdown at the Prudential Center."
Callahan a standout in tough loss
"It was a performance exemplifying Ryan Callahan's Ranger captaincy in all but one facet — his team lost. Last night at the Garden, in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Devils, Callahan was the best player on the ice just about every time his skates came over the boards. But he was only one man, and after a 5-3 loss, his team now stares elimination in the face for the third time in as many playoff series, down 3-2 in this Battle of the Hudson. "We've just got to win one game," Callahan said. "We've been in this situation in the Ottawa series. We've just got to win one road game.""
Ryan Callahan tells Daily News his left hand is not bothering him, Marc Staal says he only had wind knocked out on Bernier hit
"Ryan Callahan has one goal and two assists in his last 12 games, so the speculation is that the Rangers captain could be playing through an injury to his left hand from a blocked shot in the Ottawa series. But even if Callahan is injured, he wasn't letting on Friday after practice in Greenburgh. "No, nothing," Callahan told the Daily News when asked if his hand were injured. "Nothing. I'm good." Rangers defenseman Marc Staal, meanwhile, clarified that in Game 2 he only had the wind knocked out of him on a crushing third-period hit by Devils forward Steve Bernier that drew an interference penalty. Staal, who missed the first 36 games of the season with concussion symptoms, got up"
Callahan vows 'to step up and lead' in Game 7 tonight vs. Caps
"There were no guarantees issued by the captain of the Rangers the day before his team's second Game 7 of the playoffs, only a vow from Ryan Callahan heading into tonight's Eastern Conference semifinal showdown at the Garden against the Capitals. "I need to step up and lead and do the things I'm counted on doing for the team," Callahan told The Post yesterday. "And that's what I expect of myself [tonight]. "Personally, I don't think I've been at my best in this series, but I'm looking to be stronger and better and create more offense. I have to do the things that make me effective and make us a better team.""
Callahan says he's "fine" for Game 7
"Captain Ryan Callahan was on ice for the Rangers' morning optional in preparation for Game 7 and said there are no issues heading into the contest. "I'm fine," said Callahan, who had his middle finger looked at after blocking a Chris Phillips shot early in the third period of the Rangers' 3-2 win in Monday's Game 6 at Ottawa. Callahan played the rest of that game but was given a day off for maintenance on Wednesday after the team was off on Tuesday. Callahan added it was nothing he was concerned about and he was not wearing a wrap while meeting with the media, nor did there appear to be much, if any, swelling."
Mates poised to rally behind Cally
"If curious about the Rangers' mentality heading into tonight's Game 7 of their opening-round playoff series against the Senators, one need only to look back a single series of events, starting with about three minutes gone by in the third period of Game 6. In the din of Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, with the Rangers already leading the game 3-1 but their backs against the wall by being down 3-2 in the best-of-seven series, captain Ryan Callahan took a blistering slap shot from Chris Phillips to his left hand. He could no longer hold his stick, but stayed on the ice and nearly blocked two more. When he got to the bench, trainer Jim Ramsay examined him. At the next whistle, the Rangers were on"
Callahan, Lundqvist lead Rangers to Game 1 win
"For a significant stretch through the first 30 minutes of last night's first-round playoff opener at Madison Square Garden, the only way to truly identify the top seed was by the color of the uniforms denoting home and away. But, critically, Henrik Lundqvist was wearing the Blueshirt, and when the King refused to be beaten even as his team spent shifts at a time in the defensive zone through the midway point of the second while trying to protect a one-goal lead, the Rangers grabbed onto his cape and steadied themselves to record a 4-2 victory over the Senators for the jump in the best-of-seven that continues on Broadway tomorrow night."
Callahan leads first-place Rangers to big win over Jets
"Just when it appeared the Rangers were about to be run out of town, Ryan Callahan picked them up, put them on his shoulders a* d carried them home, two points closer to clinching home ice, two points closer to nailing down conference and division titles. The man who wears the "C" was a sight to see in delivering a tour de force that started with a shorthanded goal he created with indefatigable work behind the net at 7:44 of the second that brought the Rangers back to within 2-1 and didn't end until the Rangers had sealed their fifth victory in their last six games, 4-2 over the Jets last night."
Callahan's OT goal helps Rangers pad lead
"The Rangers are being chased instead of doing the chasing down the stretch this time, being pursued by the rampaging Penguins for first place in the East and in the Atlantic rather than chasing myriad clubs for the final playoff spot as has been the norm the previous five seasons. The Blueshirts operate under the mantra, "Attention to detail one game at a time" as preached by John Tortorella, the maharishi behind the bench. But make no mistake about it, this team covets the regular-season conference title. "I think it's good to stay on top," Henrik Lundqvist said after last night's 2-1 overtime victory over the Red Wings re-established a three-point lead on the Penguins, who will make up"
Callahan out today against Boston
"Rangers captain Ryan Callahan will miss Sunday afternoon's contest with the Boston Bruins due to a bruised foot, the third straight game Callahan will sit out. Callahan suffered the injury Monday in a 2-0 win against the Devils, but the swelling in his right foot has made it impossible to get into a skate. Tests showed there is no break in the foot, so it's a matter of waiting for the swelling to subside. Rangers defenseman Michael Del Zotto, who was absent from Friday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Lightning due to a hip injury, will take warmups and should be OK to return. If he can't go, Jeff Woywitka will likely take his spot as he did Friday."
Rangers' Ryan Callahan out with bruised foot
"Rangers captain Ryan Callahan will miss his first game of the year Thursday night with a bruised foot, and appears to be out Friday and possibly longer. The loss of Callahan, who flew here with the team using crutches and wearing a boot, puts the Rangers at a severe disadvantage against the Hurricanes. He has 22 assists and is second on the team with 25 goals. A 6-foot-8 defenseman, John Scott, acquired at the trade deadline from Chicago, will be used on the fourth line and Ruslan Fedotenko will likely move up to the first line on right wing, with Brad Richards and Carl Hagelin, but coach John Tortorella would not discuss his lineup Thursday morning."
Callahan the perfect man to lead Rangers
"He is the officer as infantryman, the leader who volunteers for the grunt work. He is Ryan Callahan, the right captain at the right time for the right team. "He's a second-, third-, fourth-effort guy who leads by example, you know what I mean?" Brad Richards asked rhetorically before the Rangers brought their seven-point conference lead over the Bruins here for tonight's test in a series of them for Callahan and his band of brothers. "He's not a rah-rah guy, he's not 38 years old with 18 years of experience. "But all our guys follow him, and we follow him because night in and night out, his level of effort is always going to be the highest of anybody on the ice for both sides.""
Capitals vs. Rangers: Ryan Callahan's hot streak continues as Washington falls, 3-2
"In a nationally televised game, the Washington Capitals sized up an opportunity to measure themselves against the top team in the Eastern Conference. But despite spurts of strong play throughout the contest, Washington failed to finish on a few too many offensive chances and made a few too many mistakes to surpass the New York Rangers. Washington fell, 3-2, to the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Sunday and is 3-4-3 in its past 10 games. The loss leaves the Capitals (61 points) in ninth place in the East for at least one more day and drops them four points behind first-place Florida in the Southeast Division."
Callahan line powers Rangers
"And so, in their 10th game, the Rangers got back to basics, which basically meant having the puck instead of chasing it, and even more so, having the puck down low where they could create below the hash marks. Indeed, the Blueshirts grinded out a 5-2 victory over the Sharks last night for their first win in three tries at the remodeled Garden, and the Brad Richards-Ryan Callahan-Brandon Dubinsky line set the tone in the club's most complete performance yet. Callahan, who scored twice with an assist to earn the Broadway chapeau, and Dubinsky, who had a pair of assists while attending to his work away from the puck, are card-carrying, hard-hat wearing Black-and-Blueshirts, everyone"
