Reggie Wayne News & Rumors

Wayne: Is his Indy career at an end? If so, he's most proud of game streak
"Reggie Wayne's NFL career didn't begin with a rush of game-winning touchdown catches and Pro Bowl appearances. On his first day at Indianapolis Colts training camp in 2001, fourth-year quarterback Peyton Manning hit him with a pair of strikes. They bounced off. "Dropped 'em; 0-for-2 out of the gate," Wayne recalled. "I remember coach (Jim) Mora gave E.J. (running back Edgerrin James) a look that asked: 'Thought this guy had hands.' " Those hands have caught 854 passes over the 11 seasons since. That's more than Charlie Joiner, Michael Irvin, James Lofton, Shannon Sharpe and Steve Largent, Pro Football Hall of Fame members all. Wayne is 17th on the NFL career receptions list, 22nd in career"
Orlovsky-to-Wayne TD pass with 19 seconds left wins it
"After a grudging battle of stubborn defenses and some late offensive heroics Thursday night, the Indianapolis Colts walked out of Lucas Oil Stadium with something unimaginable in recent months: A winning streak. The Colts beat the Houston Texans 19-16 with a two-minute drive worthy of Peyton Manning to win their second consecutive game and imperil their prospects of capturing the first overall pick of the 2012 draft. Dan Orlovsky hit Reggie Wayne with a 1-yard touchdown pass with 19 seconds to play to complete a valiant 78-yard drive. Wayne went high to make the catch, then beat his chest, pointed to the crowd and delivered the football to Orlovsky as a keepsake."
Wayne's streak imperiled
"The only number that matters in a lost season: one. One win, perhaps today against the visiting Tennessee Titans, would keep the Indianapolis Colts from joining the 2008 Detroit Lions as the only 0-16 teams in NFL history. On a personal level, here's another number with meaning: 252. That's Reggie Wayne's target over the final three games -- 84 yards per game -- to tack up an eighth consecutive season with at least 1,000 receiving yards. That would tie Marvin Harrison's club record. In NFL history, only Jerry Rice (11) and Tim Brown (nine) had longer streaks."
Reggie Wayne frustrated, but keeps his cool
"It builds every week, simmering just below the surface, looking for an outlet. It's the frustration Reggie Wayne deals with after another Indianapolis Colts loss, more than likely another game in which the five-time Pro Bowl receiver looked on helplessly, meticulously ran route after route and, if he was lucky, caught a pass or two. Maybe today is different. Maybe Wayne will be more involved in an offense that has been pass-challenged and an eyesore without quarterback Peyton Manning. Maybe Wayne will re-emerge as a playmaker and make a difference against the Carolina Panthers at Lucas Oil Stadium, and the Colts won't open a season 0-11 for just the second time. "I always feel 'this week'"
Wayne waiting to light victory cigar from Irvin
"The sampler box is a gift from Michael Irvin and sits front and center on a shelf in Reggie Wayne's cubicle in the Indianapolis Colts locker room. Inside are Montecristo cigars. The style? Operation Hope. "I am a cigar guy and that's the first time I've seen that," Wayne said of the Operation Hope label. "I don't know if Michael Irvin sent that to me for a reason. "I have to check into that." It might have been encouragement from one former University of Miami wide receiver to another. The Colts are one of the NFL's four winless teams heading into today's meeting with the Kansas City Chiefs at Lucas Oil Stadium. Operation Hope? "I thought that was awesome," said Wayne, who received the"
Notebook: Offensive mistakes put Colts in a hole
"On an otherwise gloomy Sunday, Reggie Wayne gave the Indianapolis Colts a bright spot during their 34-7 mugging at Houston. The 11th-year wide receiver accounted for almost half of the Colts offense and their lone touchdown with seven catches for 106 yards. He also provided incisive analysis. "We can't shoot ourselves in the foot offensively," he said after the game. "We can't have holding, can't drop passes, can't fumble. "I think if we stay third-and-manageable, we're good." Setting aside the 21 points they gave Houston with a pair of fumbles inside their 20-yard line and a 79-yard punt return, third down is what killed the Colts. They led the league by converting at a 47.4 percent rate"
Painter makes a connection in Colts' 24-21 loss to Packers
"Reggie Wayne had Curtis Painter's back when the Indianapolis Colts made a midweek move aimed at strengthening their backup quarterback situation. The Pro Bowl receiver took it a step further Friday night against the Green Bay Packers at Lucas Oil Stadium. Action replaced words. Wayne was the catalyst as Painter passed for 171 yards and two first-half touchdowns. He had six receptions for 105 yards, including a 57-yard touchdown. Everything else seemed secondary, especially the Packers' 24-21 overtime victory that came on Mason Crosby's 50-yard field goal as time expired. The loss was the Colts' ninth straight in preseason, a franchise record, and their 26th in the past 30 games. The Colts"
Wayne says he'll wait for new contract
"Reggie Wayne's contract issue apparently is no issue at all. "If it was an issue, I wouldn't be here," the Indianapolis Colts five-time Pro Bowl receiver said Monday. "It is what it is. I've got about seven or eight months left on this contract. I guess we will wait until the season's over and figure out what the rest will be." Wayne, along with defensive end Robert Mathis, boycotted all team-related functions last year before reporting to training camp. They withheld their services to show displeasure over the team's refusal to address their contracts. Each again is at camp. Each is signed through this season. Vice chairman Bill Polian said Mathis and Wayne will be priorities after this"

Colts ask Wayne, Mathis for patience
"After taking expensive steps to ensure the Indianapolis Colts have a roster capable of challenging for a championship by getting unsigned players in the fold, owner Jim Irsay turned his attention to a pair of Pro Bowl players still under contract. His message to defensive end Robert Mathis and wide receiver Reggie Wayne was about patience. Each player's contract expires at the end of this season, and each wants an extension. "At this point," Irsay said Sunday afternoon, "I don't anticipate that sort of thing, an extension or anything like that." At some point, Irsay, vice chairman Bill Polian and general manager Chris Polian will sit down and look ahead to 2012. "We always talk about next"
Despite contract issues, Reggie Wayne anticipates going back to work
"A heavy bass beat thumped in the background, heralding the start of the annual Amp Harris/Reggie Wayne "Saving Our Youth'' celebrity basketball game as part of Indiana Black Expo. But it's another sound that Wayne anticipates. Soon. Rrrrriiing! The Indianapolis Colts' veteran receiver, along with approximately 1,900 of his NFL brethren, is waiting for that phone call from team officials informing him the owner-imposed lockout has ended and it's time to get back to the business of football. "Whenever they're ready, man, just call me . . . they've got my number,'' Wayne said, flashing a smile. "All that back-and-forth stuff (during labor negotiations), you don't know what's going to happen."
Pro Bowler Wayne takes Colts wide receiver to Hawaii
"It's not unusual for a Pro Bowl quarterback or running back to thank his offensive line by taking its members to the annual AFC-NFC all-star game, which will be played Sunday in Honolulu. Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne kept his invitations closer to home. "Shout out to my big brother Reggie Wayne," Colts wide receiver Pierre Garcon announced Thursday via Twitter, "for taking all of the WRs to Hawaii with him.""
Wayne boils over Revis Island exile
"One of the most curious elements to the Jets' 17-16 wild-card win over the Colts on Saturday night was Peyton Manning's reluctance to pass the ball to his top receiver, Reggie Wayne. Manning clearly was afraid to throw the ball anywhere near Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis. The result was Wayne -- who caught the only pass thrown to him for a mere yard -- being rendered useless in the game. And that left Wayne seething afterward. "I shouldn't have even suited up," Wayne said. "I should have watched the game like everybody else. I was irrelevant. It's bull, man. I give everything I've got no matter what, and ... one ball, that's all." Wayne, who was second in the NFL with 111 receptions, was"
Colts WR Wayne's single catch leaves him fuming
"Reggie Wayne still was doing a slow, quiet, frustrating burn as he deliberately dressed. "It's bull. It's bull, man," the five-time Pro Bowl receiver said after being a non-factor in the Indianapolis Colts' 17-16 loss to the New York Jets in Saturday night's AFC wild-card playoff game at Lucas Oil Stadium. "I give everything I've got no matter what. Every day, I give it everything. And . . . one ball, that's all." During the regular season, Wayne finished second in the NFL with a career-best 111 receptions. Against the Jets and Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis, he had one catch for 1 yard. More frustrating to Wayne was the fact quarterback Peyton Manning delivered only one pass in his"
Jets' Darrelle Revis put Colts receiver Reggie Wayne on 'Revis Island' in AFC Wild Card victory
"Colts receiver Reggie Wayne led the AFC with 111 receptions this season, but he became a nonfactor Saturday night as Darrelle Revis took him out of the game with man-to-man coverage. Wayne was reduced to an observer for the most part. Peyton Manning targeted him once in the first half, resulting in a one-yard gain. It turned out to be Wayne's lone reception. In the regular season, Revis was thrown at only 56 times, allowing 19 receptions. Not even Manning would look his way Saturday night."
Manning, Freeney, Wayne, Mathis earn Pro Bowl trips -- but only if Colts don't reach Super Bowl
"Hawaii isn't the most desired destination, but four Indianapolis Colts can count on the Pro Bowl for an enjoyable getaway if they don't reach the Super Bowl. Quarterback Peyton Manning, defensive end Dwight Freeney, wide receiver Reggie Wayne and defensive end Robert Mathis were repeat selections Tuesday for the AFC-NFC all-star game, which returns to Honolulu on Jan. 30 after being played in Miami last February. But Super Bowl participants don't get to take the Hawaiian vacation. That would suit the Colts just fine. "It's definitely a plan B," said Wayne, chosen for the fifth consecutive year. "That's what you want it to be. For everybody in this locker room and organization, the ultimate"
Reggie Wayne has little success due to healthy dose of cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha
"Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha said he felt as good as he has at any point since he sprained his right ankle Oct. 31. Full health oftentimes isn't enough when it comes to covering Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl wide receiver Reggie Wayne. Then again, not everyone has Asomugha's ability to shut down an opposing receiver. Wayne made just one catch against Asomugha for 14 yards Sunday, and that came on a play in which Asomugha was picked by another Colts receiver and had no chance at making a play. Wayne had been averaging seven catches and 89 yards per game this season. He caught only three for 40 yards of the six passes thrown his way Sunday. Asomugha broke up three passes and was called"
Reggie Wayne loves playing the Jaguars
"Please excuse Reggie Wayne if he approaches this afternoon's must-win game with Jacksonville at Lucas Oil Stadium with a noticeable hop in his step. The Jaguars, you see, tend to bring out the best in the Indianapolis Colts' four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver. "Just seems like whenever we play them,'' Wayne said, "I have a good, solid game. "Maybe they forget about me, I don't know. Jacksonville was my first 'best' game, in my mind.'' In 2003, Wayne's first season as a full-time starter, he had 10 receptions, 141 yards and two touchdowns against the Jaguars. It was a preview of coming attractions. Consider: In the first meeting this season, Wayne had a regular-season career-high 15 catches"
Jaguars have struggled to defend pass, Colts receiver Reggie Wayne
"The players in the Jaguars' secondary won't need numbers on their uniforms Sunday. A bull's-eye would be more appropriate. The secondary, ranked 28th in passing yardage allowed, has been a target much of the year. Now it must go up against Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning in the Jaguars' most important game of the season. With a win, Jacksonville will clinch its first division title since 1999. The Jaguars won the first matchup against the Colts this season, 31-28, on Josh Scobee's 59-yard field goal. But Manning torched their secondary by throwing for 352 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite receiver, Reggie Wayne, caught 15 passes for 196 yards. Wayne has a history of"
Reggie Wayne eschews the bravado that has made Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco notorious
"For one euphoric moment, Reggie Wayne was more Terrell Owens or Chad Ochocinco than Reggie Wayne. In the closing seconds of what would be an improbable Indianapolis Colts comeback victory over the New England Patriots 12 months ago at Lucas Oil Stadium, Wayne went down in the back of the end zone for a low, hard fastball from quarterback Peyton Manning. He caught the back end of it for a 1-yard touchdown that completed a 35-34 win. Wayne bounced to his feet, slammed the football against the ground and did a Lucas Leap into the end-zone stands. It was spur-of-the-moment ecstasy. It was so un-Wayne-like. And it probably wouldn't register on a top-20 list chronicling touchdown celebrations or"
Wayne preparing to step it up vs. Texans
"The beard is gone, a casualty of the Indianapolis Colts' bye week. "Hopefully, this will make me a little faster,'' Colts receiver Reggie Wayne said with a smile, rubbing his chin where light stubble has replaced a heavy beard. "Hopefully, this is more me. "Since (Austin) Collie is down and Dallas (Clark) is down, I've got to bring back the ol' me.'' Wayne has been quarterback Peyton Manning's go-to receiver the past four or five seasons, and that responsibility figures to increase beginning with Monday night's meeting with the Houston Texans in Lucas Oil Stadium. Clark, the Pro Bowl tight end, is out for the season with a displaced tendon in his right wrist. Collie is out indefinitely"
Colts WR Wayne would be working on lesson plan
"Reggie Wayne has schooled many an NFL cornerback, including a few last Sunday at Jacksonville when he set a club record with 15 receptions. Had a professional football career not materialized for the Indianapolis Colts four-time Pro Bowl receiver, his alternative career choice might have involved schooling of a different nature. "I'd be teaching," Wayne said. "That's what I'd like to do. Somewhere, somehow, teaching." It's in Wayne's blood. "My grandmother was a teacher. My dad taught civics," Wayne said. "Maybe I've got a little bit of that in me." He was a history major at the University of Miami. The only question, Wayne said, would have been deciding which level of students to teach."
Common bond for Wayne, Johnson
"The texting was hot and heavy between two close friends who also happen to be two of the NFL's top receivers. Through the early portion of the preseason, the electronic dialogue connecting the Indianapolis Colts' Reggie Wayne and Houston's Andre Johnson -- former University of Miami teammates and four-time Pro Bowl selections -- focused on what Johnson ultimately would receive and Wayne was seeking. That would be a contract extension. "It's kind of weird,'' Wayne said. "This offseason we were talking about that. Once he got his contract done, I texted him, 'Congratulations.' First thing he asked me was, 'So, what's up with yours?' '' Wayne's reply to Johnson was short and not-so-sweet."
For Manning and Wayne, telepathy seems to be in play
"At some point this afternoon, amid the can't-hear-myself-think din that Houston's Reliant Stadium promises to be, Peyton Manning will position himself as the triggerman in the Indianapolis Colts offense and Reggie Wayne will move out wide left, arms dangling at his side. They'll be separated by 10 or 15 yards, but connected nonetheless. With verbal communication virtually impossible, Manning and Wayne will carry on. It's a look, a nod. Maybe a hand signal. It's something, the same something Manning and Marvin Harrison cultivated and relied on for so many seasons. "It's kind of hard to explain, it really is,'' Wayne said. "He'll give me a look and I'll know what's up. I'm knowing what he's"
Wayne, Mathis on time as Colts arrive in Anderson
"At the end of a long, blistering Sunday, the Indianapolis Colts -- arriving one by one, caravanlike in their snazzy SUVs -- were present and accounted for. Reggie Wayne? Check. Robert Mathis? Check. Everyone under contract reported, save one unnamed player who was excused from Sunday's activities for personal reasons but was expected to be on hand for this morning's first practice at 8:30. That included free agent cornerback Deshea Townsend, a 12-year veteran with 80 career starts with the Pittsburgh Steelers who signed a one-year contract. But it doesn't include rookie defensive end Jerry Hughes. The Colts' first-round draft pick had not agreed to terms late Sunday, but the two sides"
Caldwell says he expects Reggie Wayne and Robert Mathis to show up for camp
"A throwback training camp got underway for the Indianapolis Colts this morning as players began streaming onto the Anderson University campus. There was no official announcement as to whether wide receiver Reggie Wayne and defensive end Robert Mathis would report prior to the 2 p.m. deadline, but coach Jim Caldwell expects his two disgruntled Pro Bowlers to be on hand. "It's the start of training camp; that's the way it's supposed to be,'' Caldwell said during a news conference. "We anticipate that happening. If it doesn't, we'll adjust.'' Wayne and Mathis skipped the team's voluntary offensive workouts and mandatory minicamp because of dissatisfaction with their contracts. Each player has"
Wayne wants to get to camp on time, but will wait until contract talks play out
"Reggie Wayne was at Conseco Fieldhouse to play basketball Saturday evening, but he took a moment to talk football. Indianapolis Colts players report to training camp at Anderson University two weeks from today and Wayne's timely arrival is an open question. "I want to be there on time but we're just going to do our part and let them do all the negotiations," the Colts' four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver said before the Amp Harris & Reggie Wayne "Saving Our Youth" Celebrity Basketball Game. "We done talked a little bit but it's just talk. That was it." Wayne is dissatisfied with his contract, a six-year, $39 million deal that has two years to run with base salaries of $5.47 million this"
Wayne taking day-to-day approach to situation with Colts
"The Indianapolis Colts have made their priorities clear: Re-sign quarterback Peyton Manning before his contract expires at the end of 2010, then turn their attention toward extensions for wide receiver Reggie Wayne and defensive end Robert Mathis. That's an uneasy prospect for Wayne and Mathis, considering the uncertainty of the league's labor situation. Representatives for both Pro Bowl players -- who each have two years remaining on their contracts -- have been told by Colts general manager Bill Polian not to expect new deals anytime soon. That led Mathis to skip organized team activities and Wayne to sit out a mandatory minicamp in June. Wayne was back in Indianapolis on Saturday night,"
Colts player's friend turns herself in
"An acquaintance of Indianapolis Colts player Reggie Wayne turned herself in to police Monday to face accusations that she charged more than $93,000 in cash and goods to the star NFL receiver's credit card, said a spokesman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Prosecutors have filed charges of theft and fraud against Natasha McKenzie, 26. Police said last week that in one year, McKenzie used Wayne's credit cards to obtain $60,000 in cash and $35,000 in products and services. Police searched McKenzie's home last week and seized furniture, three TV sets and other electronics."
Reggie Wayne's ex-girlfriend surrenders on theft charge
"A female acquaintance of Indianapolis Colts player Reggie Wayne turned herself into police this morning to face accusations that she charged more than $93,000 in cash and goods to the receiver's credit card. Natasha McKenzie, 26, had been charged in a warrant with two counts of felony theft. She turned herself into police at 9:10 a.m. today, said Lt. Jeff Duhamell, of the Indianapolis Metropolitan police. Police said last week that in one year, McKenzie used Wayne's credit cars to obtain $60,000 in cash and $35,000. Police searched McKenzie's home last week and seized furniture, three television sets and other electronics."
Saturday defends players' holdouts
"There are, Jeff Saturday conceded, two sides to every story. That includes the one involving the minicamp holdouts of Reggie Wayne and Robert Mathis. The Pro Bowl center, though, sides with his teammates. Saturday is the Colts' representative to the NFL Players Association and a member of the NFLPA executive committee. "I'm going to side with players 100 percent of the time,'' he said Sunday. "I want players to get as much money as they can, when they can. "Careers are short, and you never know what's guaranteed or what's coming your way.'' On the flip side, Saturday understands teams must look at the bigger picture. "They have a responsibility to look to the future, way past how we as"
Polian says "lack of system" making extensions to Wayne and Mathis difficult
"Colts president Bill Polian understands the contract issues receiver Reggie Wayne and defensive end Robert Mathis have that are keeping them away from this weekend's mandatory minicamp. But the uncertainty that comes with the last year of the collective bargaining agreement complicates things in a way that makes it sound highly unlikely either player will be getting a new deal. "We're not in a regular environment, that's the problem," Polian said. "I've spoken to both their agents, and I certainly respect both men and they make a good case. But the problem is we don't have a system, and without a system you don't know where contracts might or might not fit." With that being the case,"
I side with the players in these latest Colts holdouts
"In the National Football League, contracts are a one-way street. Management has all the power, all the options, and can wield that power on a whim. You tore your Achilles tendon walking down the street? Goodbye. You're cut; no more cash for you. You lost a step-and-a-half this summer and can't beat younger cornerbacks anymore? Thanks for your Hall of Fame career, now please enjoy your lovely parting gift. If this was baseball, basketball or hockey -- where contracts are contracts and both sides are held to the same standard of compliance -- I would be ripping on Indianapolis Colts minicamp holdouts Reggie Wayne and Robert Mathis. In those sports, where a team must pay for five years on a"
Reggie Wayne, Colts at odds over contract
"Wide receiver Reggie Wayne is skipping the Indianapolis Colts' three-day minicamp because of a contract dispute with the team. Wayne apparently is seeking to upgrade a contract that has two seasons remaining with salaries of $5.47 million next season and $5.95 million for the 2011 season, according to the Indianapolis Star. "I will continue training diligently in Florida, as I have each off-season since my rookie year, to ensure that I am ready to play this season," Wayne said in an e-mail, according to the Star."
Wayne, Mathis miss mandatory Colts minicamp
"Surgery in early March alleviated a persistent pain in Peyton Manning's neck. "I feel good," the four-time NFL MVP quarterback said Friday on the first day of the Indianapolis Colts' mandatory minicamp. "All of my symptoms and issues I've been dealing with the past four years have subsided." So much for the day's good news. Two other players -- wide receiver Reggie Wayne and defensive end Robert Mathis -- proved to be a pain in the team's posterior with their unexcused absences. Each is a multiple Pro Bowl selection. Each has two years remaining on his contract. And each wants the Colts to address that contract. Wayne is due base salaries of $5.47 million this season and $5.95 million in"
Wayne says he'll skip Colts' minicamp
"The Indianapolis Colts' mandatory three-day minicamp will open today minus Reggie Wayne. The four-time Pro Bowl receiver said in an e-mail sent to the media Thursday evening that he and the Colts are "in disagreement concerning my contract.'' Wayne, 31, has two years remaining on the six-year, $39 million contract he signed in 2006. The team's 2001 first-round draft pick already has received $27.58 million over the first four years of the deal and is due base salaries of $5.47 million this season and $5.95 million in 2011. However, it's clear Wayne thinks he deserves to be paid on par with the NFL's other top receivers. Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald, Miami's Brandon Marshall and New England's"
Wayne will skip Colts' mandatory minicamp, wants new contract
"Four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Reggie Wayne will not participate in the Indianapolis Colts' mandatory three-day minicamp this weekend as he seeks a new contract, a source with knowledge of the situation said Thursday. Wayne, who later confirmed his intentions in an e-mail to ESPN, also has missed organized team activities this offseason, but that isn't unusual. Wayne has two years remaining on his deal, and he's due to earn under $6 million each season. The Colts are trying to get a new deal done for quarterback Peyton Manning, then turn their attention to potential extensions for Wayne and defensive end Robert Mathis, who also has skipped OTAs."
Police look into use of Wayne's credit
"Indianapolis Metropolitan Police and the Secret Service Asset Forfeiture Unit last week searched the home of a woman suspected of fraudulently using a bank card account belonging to Indianapolis Colts receiver Reggie Wayne. "We have found that over approximately one year of time that $60,000 of cash and $35,000 of merchandise had been misappropriated by the use of a debit card or credit card number," IMPD sergeant Paul Thompson said Tuesday. Furniture, three television sets and other electronics were seized. Wayne filed a theft report in April stating that an ex-girlfriend had possibly used his credit card to make transactions totaling more than $93,000. Wayne said in the police report he"
Wayne, Powers back at practice
"Reggie Wayne returned for Saturday's light workout as the Indianapolis Colts wrapped up preparations for Super Bowl XLIV. The Pro Bowl wide receiver left Friday's practice early after aggravating a fat-pad injury to his right knee. According to a pool report released by the league, Wayne moved without restriction during Saturday's 35-minute walkthrough."
Caldwell: Wayne's knee injury not serious
"Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl receiver Reggie Wayne exited today's practice early with a knee injury that is not believed serious enough to keep him out of Super Bowl XLIV. In a pool report submitted by the league, Wayne re-aggravated an old injury, the fat pad to his right knee, while running a pass pattern. He left the field unassisted and headed inside for treatment 20 minutes before the end of practice. Colts coach Jim Caldwell said he didn't think the injury was severe. Wayne is listed as probable on the team's injury report for Sunday's NFL title game. "He just irritated the fat pad in his knee," the coach said in the pool report. Starting rookie cornerback Jerraud Powers participated"
Reggie Wayne tweaks tender knee
"The Indianapolis Colts' final full workout for Super Bowl XLIV was encouraging until a late scare as Pro Bowl wide receiver Reggie Wayne exited practice early Friday. On an afternoon when rookie cornerback Jerraud Powers tested his fractured left foot on a limited basis and starting left guard Ryan Lilja returned from a back injury, Wayne pulled up with an aggravation of an existing injury to the fat pad of his right knee, according to a pool report submitted by the league. Wayne departed 20 minutes early, but Colts coach Jim Caldwell said he did not think the flare-up would keep the receiver out of Sunday's game. Wayne, who tied tight end Dallas Clark with a team-high 100 catches in the"
Spreading wealth works
"Peyton Manning looked for them first in the regular season, but receiver Reggie Wayne and tight end Dallas Clark often have taken a back seat to young receivers Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie in the playoffs. That's not an issue, Wayne and Clark say, as long as the Indianapolis Colts win. Garcon, in his second year, enters Sunday's Super Bowl XLIV as the Colts' leading receiver in the postseason with 16 catches. That includes 11 in the previous game, an AFC Championship Game record. Collie, a rookie fourth-round pick, is tied with Wayne and Clark at 11 catches. During the season, Wayne and Clark each caught 100 passes. Collie had 60 and Garcon 47. "It's kind of nice knowing that, gosh, if"
Ex-wide out Marvin Harrison no longer a fixture with Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis Colts
"Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison played together for eight seasons, forming one of the greatest receiving tandems in history. They were close in so many ways - their numbers (87 and 88, respectively), their lockers (side by side) and their statistics (grab the closest record book). They were close, all right, except when it came to their relationship. They "very seldom" talked to each other, Wayne revealed Thursday, adding that he hasn't heard from Harrison in almost a year - not since the future Hall of Famer was released by the Colts last February. Surprising? Not according to Wayne. "He's to himself," Wayne said at the Colts' Super Bowl hotel. "He has a lonely soul. He's anti-social. To"
New Orleans Saints Reggie Bush and Indianapolis Colts Reggie Wayne in a commercial
"Before the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts meet at the Super Bowl on Sunday, Saints running back Reggie Bush and Colts receiver Reggie Wayne will be in a joint Body By Milk ad that will run in USA Today on Friday. The player who wins the trophy also earns a second, solo Body By Milk ad which will appear in USA Today February 8."
Manning, Wayne have strong New Orleans connections
"The New Orleans Saints, too often the "Aints," still were the rage when Reggie Wayne and Peyton Manning were youngsters in New Orleans. So many years later, their hometown team is squarely in their professional team's crosshairs. On Feb. 7 in Miami's Sun Life Stadium, Wayne, Manning and the rest of the Indianapolis Colts must deal with the Saints in Super Bowl XLIV. Not surprisingly, the pending game on a worldwide stage has memories bubbling to the surface. "At the time I was growing up, there was a lot of brown paper bags, a lot of (television) blackouts," said Wayne, who attended New Orleans' John Ehret High School. "Had to listen to the game on the radio. "But those times are gone.""
Colts' Wayne relishes rematch
"Reggie Wayne considered the question, paused, smiled. What, the Indianapolis Colts' Pro Bowl wide receiver was asked, did you learn from your first meeting with Darrelle Revis, the New York Jets' lockdown cornerback? "It was an adventure on Revis Island, I guess," Wayne said. "It was fun. "One thing about Revis is he's going to challenge you. He's going to make you play your best. That's all you can ask for. I accept that challenge." The Colts and Jets will spend three hours at Lucas Oil Stadium today determining the AFC's representative for Super Bowl XLIV. The game within the game -- Wayne vs. Revis; No. 87 vs. No. 24 -- could go a long way toward determining which team advances. Wayne"
Jets' shut-down specialist Darrelle Revis looking forward to rematch with Indianapolis Colts receiver Reggie Wayne
"In Darrelle Revis' view, he "didn't accomplish what I wanted to do" the last time he faced the Colts and top receiver Reggie Wayne. Asked what that meant, the Jets' All-Pro cornerback had a matter-of-fact answer. "I didn't want him to catch any balls," Revis said. "Plain and simple." Not that Wayne had gaudy numbers in the Jets' 29-15 win over the Colts in Week 16 — he had just three catches for 33 yards. But that was before Indianapolis pulled its starters midway through the third quarter and, in what has been a remarkable season for Revis, his standards are set sky-high. Revis also pointed out that the Colts had a lot of missed connections in that game. Wayne was targeted seven times but"
Slow start by offense aggravates Wayne
"Reggie Wayne had seen enough and didn't care who knew it. Assistant head coach/receivers coach Clyde Christensen found himself within range on the Indianapolis Colts sideline Saturday night and caught an earful. "I was a little (upset)," Wayne said of his early heart-to-heart chats with Christensen. "I just wanted the ball to move. I wanted to score.
