Randy Foye News & Rumors

Clippers guard Randy Foye picks up slack in Eric Gordon's absence
"Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro didn't have one or even two players in mind when asked who was going to fill the large hole in the lineup, making up for an injured Eric Gordon. "All of them," he said. So far, though, it has been the man wearing No. 4: Randy Foye. Since moving into the starting lineup last week, Foye has averaged 18.6 points in three games. In two of the three games, he had four assists. "I put a lot of pressure on myself, especially now with Eric out, I'm that guy they go to on the perimeter," Foye said after scoring a season-high 21 points in the Clippers' victory over Charlotte on Saturday. "Me and BD [Baron Davis] kind of split it. I'm just putting pressure on myself to"
Clippers guard Randy Foye expects to return Wednesday against 76ers
"The Clippers have played 25 games. Guard Randy Foye has played in only seven of them. The rest he has missed with injuries, and the Clippers (5-20), in turn, have missed a veteran among a young core of players. But Foye, who hasn't played since a Nov. 26 loss at Phoenix, expects to return Wednesday night against Philadelphia now that he's recovered from a strained left hamstring. "The last four or five games, I've been really anxious, just to get out there and play again," Foye said Tuesday after practice. In that stretch, the Clippers have suffered two one-point losses and two nine-point losses, and Foye knows his presence in those games could have made a difference. "I love playing in"
Clippers' Randy Foye and Baron Davis are playing catch-up
"Randy Foye and Baron Davis stayed long after the rest of their teammates left a shootaround the other day in Denver, working with coaches and trainers and doing what they could to catch up. Foye also spent Saturday afternoon at the Utah Jazz practice complex, using the facility to treat and test his injured left hamstring, running in water and lifting weights. I need some practice time, and these back-to-backs aren't helping us," Foye said. The tricky hamstring has him deferring to the Clippers' trainers because it is a new injury. "They say Corey Maggette had it a few times, and I'm just trying to go for their feedback because it felt pretty good," Foye said. "I just want to know if I go"
Randy Foye out with hurt hamstring
"Los Angeles Clippers point guard Randy Foye missed Sunday's game against the Dallas Mavericks with a sprained left hamstring. Foye hurt his hamstring during a non-contact drill at Saturday's practice and is officially listed as day to day. Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said Foye will be re-evaluated Monday but predicted Foye would likely "be out a week or two." Foye was the team's primary back-up point guard behind Baron Davis and those minutes will likely now go to rookie Eric Bledsoe."
Randy Foye gets big family news in middle of Clippers practice
"Randy Foye's timing off the court was nearly as impeccable as it has been through the first few days of the Clippers training camp. His creativity was greatly tested, however, by circumstances beyond his control during a long practice with the Clippers on Wednesday. Foye knew that his family was about to expand by one, a few thousand miles away. But it was not easy to get some big news from New Jersey, even in this day of instant information. Foye could hardly whip out his phone during conditioning drills with a new team and new coach nearby. "I tried to sneak out [Wednesday], icing or getting in the cold tub," Foye recalled after Thursday's practice. "I went back and I looked at my phone"
Randy Foye to become unrestricted free agent
"Randy Foye will become an unrestricted free agent on Thursday after a source with knowledge of the Wizards' thinking confirmed that the team will not extend the $4.8 million qualifying offer. Had the Wizards tendered the qualifying offer, they would've had first right of refusal if Foye signed with another team. Now Foye, the seventh pick of the 2006 NBA draft, will be free to sign with the team of his choice when the free agent negotiating period begins. Foye, 26, became expendable when the Wizards drafted John Wall with the No. 1 overall pick and reached an agreement to acquire Kirk Hinrich from Chicago last Thursday. The source added that the Wizards still have interest in Foye, but not"
Randy Foye to have surgery on Thursday
"Randy Foye visited with a hand specialist on Monday in New York, where his camouflage cast was removed. Foye moved back the sleeve of his sport coat to show the protective sleeve that will cover his wrist until he has surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left wrist on Thursday. Foye said that it would take about six weeks for his wrist to heal. Foye originally hurt his wrist on Feb. 22 against Chicago but played with the injury for more than a month until he aggravated it in Charlotte. The New Jersey native spent the weekend at home but said he plans on accompanying the team back to Washington."
Randy Foye maintains balance despite topsy-turvy season
"When Randy Foye was selecting a cast to protect his season-ending left wrist injury, he had a choice between a black, white or other. The black cast was too boring and the white cast would've meant dealing with the hassle of people wanting to sign it, so Foye selected a more distinctive color scheme, camouflage. Foye's decision to go with the third option is similar to the box that is checked whenever there is a debate about his position on the basketball court. He can handle the ball like a point guard and has the scoring instincts of a shooting guard, but he inevitably finds himself in the "other" category. In this topsy-turvy season Foye took on several roles for the Washington Wizards."
Foye definitely done for the season
"There really wasn't much of a chance that Randy Foye would return this season after an MRI revealed a torn ligament in his left wrist last Monday. But Foye told me before the game that his season is over. Foye's left wrist is in a camouflage-colored cast and he said it won't be removed until April 13. The season finale is April 14 against Indiana. I asked him jokingly if he could play a day after having his cast removed, Foye smiled and said, "Oh naw. No chance at all." Foye originally hurt himself while guarding Chicago's Derrick Rose on Feb. 22. He played through the pain until he was forced to shut it down after a collision with Charlotte's D.J. Augustin on March 26. "It's definitely a"
Foye might be done for the season, Gee leaves for San Antonio
"After Josh Howard tore his ACL last month, Coach Flip Saunders said he was "numb" to just about everything that could happen to his team. But leave it to the Wizards to make sure that there is a rarely a dull moment in this dreadful season. Monday was another doozy: An MRI revealed that reserve point guard Randy Foye is likely done for the season with a sprained left wrist and Alonzo Gee bolted for San Antonio after his second 10-day contract expired. Foye injured himself on Feb. 22 against Chicago -- the same night Howard got hurt -- but continued to play through the pain. He later had an MRI that showed he had a cyst and some strained tendons in his wrist. Foye aggravated the injury on"
Roy tops Foye again
"Randy Foye didn't trade himself for Brandon Roy, but considering how their careers have turned out, that has to be a heavy burden for Foye to bear for the rest of his career. On the night of the 2006 NBA draft, then-Minnesota Timberwolves general manager Kevin McHale wanted Foye, but he also knew how badly Portland wanted Roy. So he selected Roy and decided to trade him to Portland to get the player he wanted all along - and a little cash on the side. You already know how that has turned out. Roy is a three-time all-star who has almost single-handedly revitalized basketball enthusiasm in the Pacific Northwest, while Foye is on his second team and currently subjected to backing up a player"
Foye still adjusting to his new role with the Wizards
"Amid the disorder surrounding the Washington Wizards this season, guard Randy Foye has distinguished himself as one of the team's steadying influences. That composure has been especially valuable in recent games, when Foye incorporated a slew of new teammates into the offense while asserting himself when needed. Such was the case in the 118-116 overtime loss to the visiting New York Knicks on Friday night. With 15 seconds to play in regulation, Foye released a 20-foot jumper that rattled around the rim and bounced above it before falling to tie the score at 112 and force the extra session. "Randy's clutch," said forward Al Thornton, who has played five games with the Wizards since joining"
Newark native Randy Foye stepping into leadership role for scandal-scarred Washington Wizards
"It was barely two months ago that the Washington Wizards had five point guards, and now Randy Foye is essentially the last man standing. This is not the way the Newark native wanted it, and this isn't the way anyone with the most depraved imagination thought it would end up. But Gilbert Arenas is done for the season, perhaps forever in D.C., a victim of infantile behavior and hubris. Javaris Crittenton, a pending free agent, has likely played his last game in Washington. Mike James is a 33-year-old backup who has been typecast as nothing more than an emergency player. And Earl Boykins, at 5-5, is still merely an explosive novelty. That leaves Foye, the guy Flip Saunders yells at more"
Saunders to bench Stevenson
"In DeShawn Stevenson's limited offensive role, even as a starter, one game in which he might go 0 for 3 isn't a huge deal. But not only has Stevenson had three of those games in a row, he's three for his last 20 field goal attempts, and he's shooting a career-low 25 percent. "Then you have people calling you, and you're thinking about it," said Stevenson. "I'm just trying to stay positive and not think about things. I've showed what I can do in this league. I just gotta keep being positive. I guess when I get my three shots, I've got knock them down, wherever they are." But after the Wizards (8-17) won just once in their last six games with Stevenson in the starting lineup, those shots"
Foye appears set to crack Wizards' lineup
"Searching yet again for the winning combination, Washington Wizards coach Flip Saunders said Monday he will be making another change to his starting lineup, replacing struggling DeShawn Stevenson with either Randy Foye or Nick Young at shooting guard. Saunders said he would wait to see what lineup the Philadelphia 76ers would use for Tuesday night's game at Verizon Center but added he was leaning toward giving Foye the nod. Either way, the change will mark the 12th different starting lineup this season for the Wizards. Foye started two games early in the season before being relegated to the bench after spraining his ankle Nov. 10 and then losing his spot in the rotation to Earl Boykins. In"
Wizards bench DeShawn Stevenson, which could open the way for Randy Foye
"Randy Foye felt like he was in familiar territory when the Washington Wizards' team plane landed at Dulles International Airport early Sunday. On his drive home, the former Minnesota resident noticed that the entire area was blanketed with snow. "It felt just like Minnesota. We was getting 20 inches every other week. Nothing new at all," Foye said after practice on Monday, wearing a black wool coat, stocking cap and scarf, as he prepared to leave Verizon Center and brave the weather once more. But when the Wizards host former coach Eddie Jordan and the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday, Foye may again find himself in another position he had grown accustomed to in three seasons with the"
Wizards' Foye stays optimistic with reduced role
"When the Washington Wizards acquired combo guard Randy Foye as part of the deal that shipped the No. 5 pick in the draft to Minnesota, they envisioned he would be a key contributor to their 2009-10 redemption campaign. But instead of serving as a reliable - and often explosive - sixth man, Foye has been reduced to spot-duty player/cheerleader. Foye started the season as Gilbert Arenas' top backup but also thrived while playing alongside Arenas, sharing ball-handling duties for stretches. Through seven games, Foye was averaging a solid 12.8 points and 3.2 assists in 29 minutes a game. But then in the eighth game, Foye badly sprained his right ankle. The Wizards picked up Earl Boykins the"
Foye tries to regain his place in the Wizards' rotation
"Randy Foye's debut with the Washington Wizards provided a taste of what President Ernie Grunfeld and Coach Flip Saunders had hoped he would become when the team acquired him from Minnesota in June -- a guard capable of spelling Gilbert Arenas or playing alongside him and unafraid to take tough shots with the game on the line. Foye came off the bench to score 19 points, including eight in the fourth quarter of the Wizards' upset of the Dallas Mavericks, and Arenas immediately compared playing with him to the symmetry he once shared with Larry Hughes. When Foye started in place of Caron Butler during a win over the New Jersey Nets in the third game of the season, Foye and Arenas combined for"
Wizards get Jamison, Foye back in lineup
"Directing his players at Tuesday's practice session - the first in more than a month with all his core players healthy - coach Flip Saunders had to feel relieved. Antawn Jamison, one of the cornerstones for the Washington Wizards, was back for the second straight day. Randy Foye also was back in his role as the key rotation player after missing the past two games with a sprained ankle. Finally, Saunders & Co. were able to resume building on the foundation they laid during training camp and the first week of the preseason. "We're not a team that you would say has lost six games in a row if you're watching," Saunders said. "I think it's good to have Antawn back in the fold. ... Now you can"
Wizards could receive partial fix
"The Washington Wizards, desperate to snap a five-game losing streak, anxiously looked to this weekend for what they anticipated would mark both the season debut of team captain Antawn Jamison and the return of starting shooting guard Mike Miller. Jamison and Miller - as well as backup point guard Randy Foye, who sprained his ankle Tuesday - could be back in uniform for the Wizards on Saturday night when they host the Detroit Pistons, but the team will be far from whole again. And that's if they play. Jamison, who has been sidelined since Oct. 13 with a partially dislocated right shoulder, was cleared for practice Thursday. But his status for Saturday is in doubt because of a virus that"
Yet another loss that hurts
"Gilbert Arenas may have claimed that he had retired from entertainment, but that doesn't mean that he's going to stop providing some zaniness and unpredictability. An hour before they played the Miami Heat on Tuesday, the Washington Wizards announced that Arenas wasn't going to play because of a strained left calf muscle. With him laid up on the training table, it appeared that Arenas's dream of playing all 82 games was going to evaporate just eight games into the season. Coach Flip Saunders had already decided that DeShawn Stevenson and Randy Foye would be his starting back court, but Arenas changed his mind about 15 minutes before the game -- right after the team's pregame meeting --"
Arenas sets franchise record, Foye helped off court with ankle sprain
"Gilbert Arenas gave the Washington Wizards a scare about an hour before Tuesday night's game against the Miami Heat. After running through pregame warmups, the guard and team trainers informed coach Flip Saunders that the sore right calf that had kept Arenas out of Monday's practice was too tight for him to play. Saunders, who already had four other injured players, had to come up with a new starting lineup. But 10 minutes before tipoff, Arenas changed his mind. Not only did Arenas play - and start - he was on the court for a season-high 42 minutes and fell two assists shy of recording a triple-double. But it wasn't the type of triple-double he was looking for, nor the outcome he sought."
Arenas and Foye as a combo?
"Gilbert Arenas and Randy Foye hardly played together during the Wizards' preseason games. But practice was a different story, and a sly grin from Flip Saunders after Thursday's practice said that particular backcourt pairing -- one crucial to Washington's opening-night victory at Dallas -- wasn't all he had waited to reveal about his rotation until the regular season. "I was wondering when it was going to happen," said Foye, who led Washington (1-0) with eight of his 19 points off the bench in the final quarter, the final 7:34 partnered with Arenas. "But I guess [Saunders] probably didn't want people to see it, because then they'd probably be waiting for it. I think when he put us in"
Oberto, Foye add balance to Wizards
"As coach Flip Saunders said Tuesday night, Gilbert Arenas "did his talking on the court." Arenas, who was reluctant to speak to the media in the preseason, fielded questions from reporters after the game but was not interested in talking about himself. When asked about his performance - 29 points and nine assists in the Washington Wizards' 102-91 season-opening victory over Dallas - he said, "I did fine." Later it was, "I felt fine." But when asked about his teammates - particularly offseason acquisitions Fabricio Oberto and Randy Foye - Arenas had no problem giving his take. His teammates praised the three-time All-Star for making the game easy for them, but Arenas credited Oberto and"
Wizards' Foye tries to find his form, and the right fit, in the offense
"The Washington Wizards certainly don't want to fall into the habit of being without Gilbert Arenas for an extended period of time again. But with Arenas sidelined with flu-like symptoms for consecutive games against Atlanta and Philadelphia, the Wizards got a small sample of what life would be like with Randy Foye filling in and running the show -- and it was a bit of a mixed bag. Foye had an uneven game in his first start at point guard on Monday against the Hawks, as he led the Wizards with 19 points and six assists during a 113-95 loss. But he seemed uncomfortable finding a balance between getting his own shots and setting up his teammates, with the offense at times sputtering with his"
Foye Hopes to Be a Hit Closer to Home for the Wizards
"This isn't exactly a homecoming for Randy Foye, but the Washington Wizards' latest back-court addition joked that if he were any closer, he'd be in the backyard of his home in New Jersey. After Foye spent the first three years of his career in Minnesota, a trade with the Wizards the day before the NBA draft in June brought him within a three-hour drive of Newark -- the city in which he was orphaned before the first grade but which provided him with a support system to overcome those hardships. With Wizards training camp set to start on Tuesday, Foye is honoring his Newark roots this season by wearing No. 15, the number he wore while leading East Side High to a state championship and"
Butler to talk title with Wes in China
"There are no exhibition games scheduled during the Wizards' ten-day trip to China next month -- Caron Butler and Randy Foye are the only two players among the traveling party, after all -- but Butler expects the journey to have an effect on the court. "Just build momentum," said the All-Star forward when asked what he hopes to get out of the trip. "Take that experience, come back and talk about the old championship days and their legacy and what we're trying to do. We're trying to do something special. I think it should be safe, and people shouldn't be scared of mentioning championship." Butler hopes to glean as much insight as possible during the trip from Wes Unseld Sr., who led the"
Foye read writing on wall from Wolves
"Traded to Washington last week, former Timberwolves guards Randy Foye and Mike Miller seem happy to be with the Wizards. Foye told the Washington Post that he thought his days in Minnesota were numbered when new team president of basketball operations David Kahn dismissed Kevin McHale as coach. "I was in Minnesota working out for about two weeks, and I was like, this just don't feel right," Foye said. "You know when you're not wanted, and I felt wanted when Kevin McHale was there. He was thinking about coming back, but once he left I pretty much knew I had to get out of there. It wasn't anything negative on David Kahn's part. He just wanted new blood. He wanted to bring in new guys, his"
Wizards snag Foye, Miller
"The Washington Wizards agreed in principle Tuesday night to send the No. 5 pick in Thursday's NBA Draft, center Etan Thomas and forwards Darius Songaila and Oleksiy Pecherov to the Minnesota Timberwolves for guard Randy Foye and veteran swingman Mike Miller, multiple league sources told The Washington Times. The deal is expected to be finalized Wednesday morning after Thomas, who is due a $1.2 million trade bonus, signs an agreement that he won't opt out of his contract - which runs through the 2009-10 season - on July 1 and pursue free agency. Foye, a three-year veteran, started 61 games last season and averaged 16.3 points and 4.3 assists, while Miller has averaged 13.9 points, 5.0"
Cleanup Starts By Throwing Out The Leftovers
"Seeing how the trade is, oh, three minutes old and not yet consummated, let's take stock of what Ernie "Small Ball" Grunfeld hath wrought anyway: Washington's pro basketball team gets two scoring swingmen who like to have the ball in their hands, and gives up a onetime starting center, a banging veteran forward, a young 7-footer and the fifth pick in tomorrow's NBA draft. Hey, at least Brendan Haywood will never have to worry about his minutes in the pivot being cut again. In an apparent ongoing attempt to run, gun and mirror the pre-Shaq Suns, Grunfeld, the Wizards' president, dealt away that depressing No. 5 selection and three contracts to Minnesota for Mike Miller, Mr. Outside, and"
Wizards Make Their Move
"The Washington Wizards' infatuation with Minnesota continues. The Wizards agreed in principle last night to a deal that would send the No. 5 overall pick, Etan Thomas, Darius Songaila and Oleksiy Pecherov to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for forward Mike Miller and guard Randy Foye, two league sources said. The Wizards had been open to dealing the pick from the moment they slipped to the fifth pick in the draft lottery. Ernie Grunfeld, the Wizards' president of basketball operations, was considering several offers and had spoken with more than a dozen teams, but he jumped on the offer from Minnesota two days before tomorrow's NBA draft. The sources spoke on the condition of"
Randy Foye, Ryan Gomes seem to have hit the wall
"When the Timberwolves lost star center Al Jefferson to a season-ending knee injury on Feb. 8, guard Randy Foye moved up to their No. 1 scoring option and initially played up to the role. That was then, though, and this is now. The Wolves' 97-90 loss to Oklahoma City on Sunday was the fifth straight game of 15 points or fewer for Foye, who scored just seven on 3-of-6 shooting. "The last two weeks he's struggled," coach Kevin McHale said. "He was very good prior to that. ... Maybe he's tired and run down a little bit, too. We've run a lot of offense through him; he's had the ball a lot. Right now, he's not the player he was two weeks ago. We've got to try to figure that out." Another player"
Foye and Carney knocked from already thin Wolves lineup
"Timberwolves guard Randy Foye wore a hooded sweatsuit and a plastic boot to protect his sprained right ankle while he watched his teammates practice 3-on-3 Tuesday morning. So has to it come to this? Are those the only healthy bodies the Wolves, with 18 games remaining, have left? "No," Foye said, "I think we've got 10." With Al Jefferson and Corey Brewer already out for the season with the same anterior cruciate knee ligament injury, the Wolves lost both Foye and Rodney Carney to injury in Monday's loss to Washington, the Wolves' 10th consecutive defeat and their single-season, franchise-record 11th consecutive at home. Both are expected to miss at least tonight's game against Memphis at"
Simple approach pays off for Minnesota Timberwolves' Randy Foye
"After 11 games of experimenting with starters, rotations and minutes, the Timberwolves finally hit on a winning formula Sunday by going back to one of sport's most basic tenets: the KISS principle. Or, in their case, KISR for "Keep It Simple, Randy." That's Randy Foye, the Wolves' starting point guard, who credited a pared-down playbook for the season-high 23 points and career-high 14 assists he had in a stunning 106-80 victory over the Detroit Pistons at Auburn Hills, Mich. "Everything was simplified tonight," Foye said after the game. "Coach brought me to the side a couple of times and told me to just go." Coach Randy Wittman said Monday it wasn't a case of going back to basics as much"
Foye ascends to next rung of leadership
"If Randy Foye toted a conductor's baton and wore a tuxedo to work rather than a mesh singlet, you'd swear he knows every note and instrument in the orchestra. You might wonder, however, if he can truly feel the music. These Timberwolves, who open their 20th season Wednesday, without question are Al Jefferson's team, but the franchise has entrusted the directing to Foye, an explosive scorer who must show in his third season he can master the tone, nuance and shadings required from winning NBA point guards. "I never knew who said I didn't," Foye said when asked about his progress learning the position. "I call the majority of our plays." Randy Wittman has allowed him the freedom to do so in"
A long look at film leads to better look on court for Foye
"Timberwolves guard Randy Foye went to the movies before a big weekend away in Bismarck and returned home with a 15-assist, two-turnover night in Sunday's 111-107 victory over Denver in North Dakota. Coach Randy Wittman, smitten with his reserves and unhappy with his starters after Thursday's victory in Toronto, spent more than an hour in a film session with his players on Saturday and, well, encouraged both Foye and Sebastian Telfair to play with more aggression at the point-guard position. Point made. "He was night and day," Wittman said after practice Monday at Target Center. "I didn't like how we played, especially in Toronto and Chicago, when the play breaks down. It's going to happen."
Timberwolves want point guard Randy Foye to turn up the volume
"Sidelined for the first 43 games by a knee injury, Randy Foye closed last season with a rush, and Timberwolves coach Randy Wittman sees his starting point guard getting nothing but better. There's just one question. "What I've got to see now is can he make the next step from a leadership standpoint?" Wittman said. "He's kind of a shy, quiet guy. He's got to be able to demand some things on the floor. I'm looking for somebody for that. You've got to have that leadership both on and off the floor, and I think he can bring that to us." According to Foye, message received. Healthy again, he has embraced his new role and knows he must make at least one change to make it work. "The only thing I"
For Foye, it doesn't get any better than this
"Randy Foye reads the Timberwolves' marketing slogans every time he walks through Target Center or takes the team's practice court downstairs from the big arena. But maybe even he didn't consider it much more than hyperbole until he awoke at home in New Jersey one morning last month and, just as most of the fans back in Minnesota did, learned about an eight-player trade made near the stroke of midnight that reshaped a team for which he will begin his third NBA season this fall. "Let's rebuild it, see what they can do," Foye said, slightly recasting the team's advertising campaign after it traded away superstar Kevin Garnett a year ago and delivered 22 victories last season. "Right"
