Nnamdi Asomugha News & Rumors
Asomugha beginning to feel comfortable
May 24
Courier-Post
"
Nnamdi Asomugha, always very detailed and rarely haphazard about virtually anything he does, surprised his audience when the removal of his helmet revealed the infant stages of a fuzzy afro thickening around his head. The raggedy patch of hair and trademark sweatpants on an atypically humid spring afternoon in South Philadelphia seemed out of character for the polished and prepared Eagles cornerback. "It's comfortable," Asomugha said after Wednesday's OTA practice, cracking a smile that acknowledged the rarity of the situation.
"
Eagles' Asomugha, Jackson fall far in NFL Rankings
May 10
CSN Philly
"
Well, this is one side effect of a disappointing 8-8 season. NFL.com began its "Top 100 Players of 2012" recently and two Eagles dropped waaaaay down from last year's ranking. DeSean Jackson, 29th last season, fell to 71st. Nnamdi Asomugha's plummet was even more precipitous. He slid from 18th to 79th. Jackson had the second worst statistical season of his career in just about every category. After averaging 55 catches for 1,106 yards and eight touchdowns in 2009 and 2010, Jackson caught 58 passes for 961 yards and four scores in 2011.

Asomugha holds 'no regrets' regarding decision to sign with Eagles over NY Jets
December 15
New York Daily News
"
In light of signing with the Philadelphia Eagles as a free agent last August and suffering through a 5-8 season to date, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha maintains that he has "no regrets" regarding his decision to choose the Eagles over the Jets. "The thing that has been very difficult is not winning," he said. Asomugha, who played for coach Rob Ryan, Rex's brother, in Oakland, admitted he came "really close" to signing with the Jets, citing the familiar defensive schemes that the Ryan brothers employ as a reason for consideration. It was not until the "11th hour" that the Eagles swooped in. "Rex was great," Asomugha said. "The whole 48-hour recruiting process, it was all fun because the way he

Nnamdi not looking at next season just yet
December 10
CSN Philly
"
This year hasn't gone quite the way Nnamdi Asomugha hoped. Hasn't gone quite the way anybody hoped. Since signing a five-year, $60 million deal, Asomugha has become a symbol of the Eagles' disastrous 2011 season. Just 12 games into his Eagles career, he's already being classified by some as a free-agent bust, by others as a high-priced disappointment. But Asomugha said in an interview Friday at his locker that he's not discouraged and promised that better days are ahead. "It doesn't feel like, 'What's next,' unless what's next is something positive," Asomugha said. "I think we're just at a point right now where there's a lot of excitement for these last four weeks. It's not just me and not

Asomugha set to face former AFC West rival
December 10
Courier-Post
"
Rivals in the AFC West for several years, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha has matched up plenty against wideout Brandon Marshall. The two will clash again Sunday, but in different uniforms, with Asomugha — the former Oakland Raider — now playing corner for the Eagles and Marshall — the former Denver Bronco — starring for the Miami Dolphins. "Yeah, we went at it a lot of times back when we were both in the AFC West," Asomugha recalled Friday. "And I would just follow him across the field. And he's a really good player, a great challenge." Marshall has 433 yards on 31 catches and just two touchdowns for his career against the Raiders, his fewest catches and receiving yards against an AFC West

Asomugha back at practice after concussion
December 6
CSN Philly
"
Eagles cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha practiced Monday just four days after suffering a concussion during the Eagles' loss to the Seahawks in Seattle. Head coach Andy Reid said on his WIP radio show Monday evening that Asomugha has already been cleared through the NFL-mandated concussion testing protocol by an independent neurosurgeon. Reid said after the game Thursday that Asomugha had suffered a concussion and a stinger. Reid said Asomugha "did well" Monday at the Eagles' first practice since their 31-14 loss to the Seahawks in Seattle on Thursday evening.

Asomugha, Anderson injured in defeat
December 2
CSN Philly
"
The injuries continue to mount. In Thursday night's loss to Seattle, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha suffered a stinger/concussion in the second quarter while defending a pass down the sideline to receiver Mike Williams. QB Tarvaris Jackson lofted the ball up to Williams, Asomugha had receiver boxed out, and Williams should have been called for offensive pass interference. Asomugha landed awkwardly, and Williams hit Asomugha's head on the way down.

Eagles hoping Asomugha can play
November 26
Courier-Post
"
Optimism still reigns for Nnamdi Asomugha to play against the Patriots on Sunday, even though the Pro Bowl cornerback is listed as questionable on the injury report and didn't practice Friday. Eagles coach Andy Reid said Asomugha believes he can recover from the hyperextended knee he sustained Thursday during a noncontact drill, an injury that at first appeared to be gruesome. "I saw it on the field, and then I had a chance to look at it on film," Reid said Friday. "It didn't look good either way. He was really optimistic from the time he went to the MRI until he got back. After I saw the film, I wasn't quite as optimistic as he was, but it was good news, so that's a plus." Reid said

Source: Asomugha sore but knee injury not serious
November 25
CSN Philly
"
Nnamdi Asomugha's scary knee injury turned out to be not as serious as it looked, and although the four-time all-pro cornerback is said to be sore, his knee has no structural damage, a league source said Thursday. Although the Eagles can breathe a sigh of relief that Asomugha did not suffer a season-ending injury, his status for the Eagles' crucial game against Tom Brady and the Patriots remains unknown. The Eagles and Patriots meet at 4:15 p.m. Sunday at the Linc.

Eagles' Asomugha suffers knee injury
November 25
Courier-Post
"
The Eagles hope Nnamdi Asomugha is back at practice today after being carted off the field late into Thursday's practice with a knee injury. The team didn't provide any further details of the Pro Bowl cornerback's injury after Asomugha fell to the ground during a non-contact drill and stayed there for several minutes before being helped on the cart. Asomugha figured to be an important part of the team's pass defense Sunday against the New England Patriots, who have the NFL's second-ranked offense, at Lincoln Financial Field.

Asomugha carted off field during practice
November 24
Yahoo! Sports
"
Multiple reports are popping up on Twitter from a variety of Eagles beat writers stating that Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha(notes) was carted off the field with a knee injury during Thursday morning's practice session. As of the current moment, there's no information regarding how serious the injury may be or whether or not the star cornerback will be able to play this Sunday when the New England Patriots come to town.

Eagles CB Asomugha carted off field with apparent knee injury
November 24
NFL.com
"
Philadelphia cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was carted off the Eagles' practice field Thursday with a knee injury, according to the team. "CB Nnamdi Asomugha has left practice with an apparent knee injury," the team wrote on Twitter. "He has been taken by cart into locker room." The injury was sustained to Asomugha's left knee, according to Sirius/XM Radio.

Nnamdi Asomugha won't be caught sleeping vs. Victor Cruz this time around when Philadelphia Eagles visit NY Giants
November 20
New York Daily News
"
Nnamdi Asomugha not only lost his first battle with Victor Cruz, he lost an aura of superiority that he has since failed to recover. But if Asomugha was at all excited about the rematch or impressed by Cruz's breakthrough season, he wasn't indicating it in the Eagles' locker room this past week. The 30-year-old went from engaging to abrupt when asked about Cruz's surprising two-touchdown performance against the Eagles and subsequent rise to prominence. "Yup," he said tersely, tucking in his lower lip when asked if Cruz had sneaked up on the Eagles in Week 3.

Asomugha reflects on passing of Al Davis
October 9
CSN Philly
"
Nnamdi Asomugha spent eight years in Oakland, and you'll never hear him say a negative word about Al Davis. Davis, principal owner of the Raiders since 1966, died Saturday at 82. He was one of the most controversial, power and influential men in professional football history. And one of the most misunderstood.
"
Castillo: I asked too much of Nnamdi too soon
October 7
CSN Philly
"
Turns out Nnamdi Asomugha is human after all. You might have guessed that while watching the first several weeks of the season but on Thursday, defensive coordinator Juan Castillo said he sometimes forgets that. "When he first came here, the thing is, I thought here is a guy that I can use like Rod Woodson," Castillo said. "Here is a guy that I can line up anywhere and really I've tried to do that with him. You saw him last week on Vernon [Davis].
"
Castillo plans to simplify Asomugha's role on defense
October 7
Courier-Post
"
Juan Castillo once looked at the rare size and smooth moves of Nnamdi Asomugha and imagined the Pro Bowl cornerback's boundless potential in a defense designed to maximize Asomugha's array of skills. But after four games of moving around his cornerback like a chess piece, an experiment met with mixed results, the Eagles' defensive coordinator is having a change of heart. Castillo admitted Thursday that he's planning to simplifying Asomugha's role Sunday against Buffalo — and perhaps beyond — to help turn around a defense that's blown second-half leads in all three losses and is on pace to shatter last year's record for passing touchdowns allowed.
"
Asomugha hears critics' whispers
October 1
Courier-Post
"
The criticism has come from fans, media, even those who have played and coached the game. They see the Eagles' 1-2 record. They see a defense that has allowed eight touchdown passes in its last two games. They remember Nnamdi Asomugha, with his new team and his hefty paycheck, looking up as Giants wideout Victor Cruz outjumped him for the go-ahead touchdown in New York's 29-16 win last Sunday. They think the All-Pro corner can't play in the Eagles' zone defense after years of nearly exclusive man coverage in Oakland, even if zone is considered easier to play. "I'm glad I don't watch (TV)," Asomugha said Friday after practice. "I'll tell you that much. It's all football. My first

Asomugha becoming face of failing defense
September 26
Courier-Post
"
When Nnamdi Asomugha signed with the Eagles following the lockout, the Pro Bowl lock-down cornerback was considered by many to be the prize free-agent catch of the summer. But it was a pair of misses by Asomugha in Sunday's crushing 29-16 loss to the Giants at Lincoln Financial Field that has him quickly becoming the face of a failed defense. Asomugha missed on a sideline tackle in the first quarter, then failed to knock down a floating pass in the four quarter. Both went for touchdowns — touchdowns he could've prevented. The Eagles' defense, stocked with Pro Bowl talent like Asomugha, allowed a fourth-quarter lead to vanish for the second straight week.

Asomugha set to begin new chapter with Birds
September 9
CSN Philly
"
Phase II of Nnamdi Asomugha's NFL career begins Sunday. Phase I? Asomugha spent his first eight seasons in Oakland. During those eight years, the Raiders never reached the playoffs, never had a winning record, went through five head coaches and four defensive coordinators and averaged 4.6 wins per year. Phase II takes place 2,507 miles to the east with a team that's been to the playoffs nine of the last 11 years, has had just one losing season since 2000 and has averaged 11 1/2 wins over the past decade. Asomugha, the centerpiece of the Eagles' frenetic off-season buying spree, will make his debut with his new team Sunday, when the Eagles face the Rams at the Edward Jones Dome in St.

Lions defensive coordinator: Nnamdi Asomugha is one-trick pony
August 19
Detroit Free Press
"
Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, this year's top free agent, recently signed a five-year, $60-million contract with Philadelphia. Not bad for a guy who doesn't tackle, according to Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham. On Wednesday, Cunningham explained how small cornerbacks get away with rough play on big receivers like Calvin Johnson. When someone suggested the corners need to get bigger, Cunningham cited Asomugha, who is 6-feet-2, 210 pounds. "The problem is the way the rules are the 6-2 guys can't play," Cunningham said. "You've got one guy in the league, Nnamdi, and all he does is press. You ever see him make a tackle? He presses the wide receiver, and he's great at it. But

Nnamdi: Jets' bid didn't fly
August 16
New York Post
"
The Jets never really had a chance at Nnamdi Asomugha. Gang Green might have thought otherwise at the time, but the All-Pro cornerback made it clear yesterday the Eagles -- not the Jets -- were the front-runners to sign him as a free agent all along. "The Eagles were at the top of my list since this whole thing started, going as far back as March, and they stepped up and made it happen," Asomugha told The Post yesterday during a morning break at Philadelphia's training camp. Of course, the Jets' comparatively lowball offer of $30 million over three years -- far short of the Eagles' five-year, $60 million proposal -- probably had something to do with Asomugha's surprise choice of

Jerry Jones: It's a fact that Nnamdi Asomugha wanted to play for the Cowboys
August 13
Dallas Morning News
"
Nearly every time Jerry Jones says the name Nnamdi Asomugha, the Cowboys owner and general manager reveals a little more about the negotiations that took place between the Cowboys and the top cornerback in free agency. Asomugha, who signed with the Philadelphia Eagles two weeks ago, landed a contract that will pay him $60 million over the next five seasons. During the Cowboys' pregame show Thursday on the SilverStar Network, Jones mentioned that "we obviously wanted (Asomugha) or we wouldn't have been in the $10 million and up range to get him." Before Thursday, Jones hadn't commented on the amount of money the Cowboys considered paying the All-Pro defensive back. Jones also mentioned that

Asomugha awes crowd
August 6
Wilmington News Journal
"
A little before 9 a.m., cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha stepped in front of a pass that Vince Young had thrown across the middle toward Chad Hall in one of the Eagles' first full-squad drills. Asomugha lurched over the shorter Hall and intercepted the football. The crowd, standing five deep behind the Lehigh University practice field fence and bunched in the bleachers, let out a roar. Michael Vick, a member of the enemy offense, offered a congratulatory hand slap. And with that, the new-look Eagles began to truly take flight Friday morning at training camp, where Asomugha, the All-Pro cornerback, and the Eagles' other recent free agent acquisitions were permitted to practice for the first time.
"
Asomugha's duties vary on first day of practice
August 6
CSN Philly
"
The idea is for the Eagles' new-look defense to create confusion. And that was certainly the case Friday, the first day the team's celebrated free agents were able to take part in training-camp drills. "Everyone's talking to me, it seems, in the middle of the play: 'You're doing this,' " said cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, the most decorated of the newcomers. "I have to figure it all out." The four-time Pro Bowler initially lined up at right cornerback with the first-string defense, with holdover Asante Samuel on the left. But Asomugha moved around a lot. Sometimes he was in the slot, with Samuel and another newly arrived corner, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, on the outside. Sometimes he was

Asomugha at nickel back
August 2
LehighValleyLive.com
"
Nnamdi Asomugha at nickel back? That may seem unusual for the man thought of as the best corner in the NFL by many but Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo said after Monday morning's training camp session at Lehigh University that it makes a lot of sense -- and that Asomugha wants to be there. "Here's the thing; you know that, really, a nickel defensive back is really a starter in the NFL," Castillo said. "There are some teams that don't even play regular personnel. The (Indianapolis) Colts, they play the two tight ends, two wideouts and one back - and that extra tight end is a receiver. So you're playing that nickel the whole game. We have three starters - you need

Nnamdi Asomugha uncomfortable with sudden depature from Bay Area
August 2
Oakland Tribune
"
Nnamdi Asomugha said being a member of the Philadelphia Eagles is "a great situation," but he confessed that the sudden end to his eight-year Raiders career still stings. One day, Asomugha is the prized target in the NFL's free agent market, with a shot at returning to the Raiders. The next, he's signing a five-year contract that guarantees him $25 million and ends his Oakland career. "The toughest part, not being able to say goodbye to anyone," Asomugha said by phone Monday in an interview with Bay Area News Group. After the lockout lifted, Asomugha said he spoke with Raiders coach Hue Jackson, cornerbacks coach Rod Woodson and squad development coach Willie Brown about the prospect of

Asomugha brings more than just athletic talent to the Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles didn't just land one of the best defensive backs in the NFL when they signed Nnamdi Asomugha to a five-year contract Friday. They reeled in one of the best people in the NFL as well. Asomugha alone could be the antidote for those with an overdose of athletic thugdom. Sick of the sports section reading like a crime blotter? Check out Asomugha's curriculum vitae of philanthropy and community involvement, and even the most cynical and disillusioned fan can't fail but come away heartened. The rest of this column could just list the causes Asomugha supports, the programs he has established and the recognition he has won for giving back to the community. It's so extensive

Asomugha sees lots of promise in Eagles
August 1
Courier-Post
"
The Eagles are one of the NFL's most successful franchises over the past decade. But their Super Bowl cupboard isn't just empty, it's covered in cobwebs. Nnamdi Asomugha is the NFL's best cornerback over the past five years. But every time the NFL playoffs came around, Asomugha's teammates were already on the golf course. Together, the team without a Lombardi Trophy and the player without a postseason appearance believe in their boundless potential. "It's a talented team," he said Sunday in his first press conference since leaving the Oakland Raiders for the East Coast. "So, it has a championship feel to it. Obviously, you still have to go out on the field and we have to perform, but all

He won 37 games in eight years with the Raiders. The Eagles won 85 during the same span. He never reached the postseason while he was with the Raiders. The Eagles have made the playoffs nine of the last 11 years. He's always spent Sundays in January with the TV off. No football for him. No playoffs. While his friends were off playing postseason football and trying to win a Super Bowl, he was trying to forget that he was an Oakland Raider. "It was depressing because there's one reason, one main reason, why you're playing," Nnamdi Asomugha said. "You want to win. So when the playoffs would come around, I wouldn't watch. Maybe I'd see some highlights here and there. But it was depressing as a

After losing Asomugha, Raiders eye offensive tackle Gaither
July 30
Sacramento Bee
"
The Raiders began moving on Friday from the loss of Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and might be closing in on their first big free-agent signing this season. After eight seasons with the Raiders, Asomugha, an unrestricted free agent, signed a reported five-year, $60 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, a deal that includes $25 million guaranteed. The Raiders, meanwhile, had former Baltimore Raven Jared Gaither, a 6-foot-9, 340-pound offensive tackle, in for a free-agent visit at training camp. "I'm very happy for (Asomugha), and we wish him well, but, as I've always said, it's next man up for us," Raiders coach Hue Jackson said. "We have some very good players here. I've

Philadelphia Eagles are surprise winners in the Nnamdi Asomugha sweepstakes
July 30

The news became official Friday during the Raiders' second practice of training camp, but most players had heard by the time they made the short walk back to the Napa Marriott. Those who had hoped unrestricted free agent Nnamdi Asomugha would return, even if the Raiders never appeared to be in the mix, faced the reality of the three-time Pro Bowl cornerback signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. In the meantime, the Raiders had Baltimore Ravens tackle Jared Gaither in camp on the first day free agents were allowed to visit and sign contracts. Gaither talked briefly with coach Hue Jackson and CEO Amy Trask before undergoing a physical. As it turned out, the contract numbers for Asomugha --

With Nnamdi Asomugha gone, Raiders commit to Routt

The Raiders won't admit it, but they had moved on from free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha back in February. That's when they gave No. 2 cornerback Stanford Routt a $31.5 million, three-year deal. On Friday, Asomugha was officially gone - signing a $60 million, five-year deal with the Eagles - and all eyes at Raiders training camp in Napa were on Routt. Well, him and 6-foot-9, 340-pound former Ravens offensive tackle Jared Gaither, who was on the field watching practice and getting checked out by doctors. A league source said Gaither and the Raiders had agreed to contract terms, but coach Hue Jackson said nothing will be finalized until the Raiders checked out Gaither's back - he

The Eagles made the announcement shortly after 3 p.m., not long after various members of the media raced to Tweet the news first. Asomugha's contract with Philadelphia is for five years, $60 million, with $25 million guaranteed. With it, his time as a Raider officially is over. East Bay fans now can only lay claim to him as a former Cal Bear and former Raider. The Nnamdi watch, already intense for most of this week, heated up as the clock ticked toward 3 p.m. today, when free agents could start signing. The

The similarities were striking in that the Eagles swooped in at the last minute and stole a premier free agent who reportedly was deciding between a team in New York and another in Texas. Just like Cliff Lee before him, Nnamdi Asomugha, considered one of the best cover cornerbacks in the NFL, turned down more money to sign with the Eagles on Friday rather than the New York Jets or Dallas Cowboys. Lee did the same thing last December when he spurned the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers to sign with the Phillies. Asomugha's deal was reportedly worth five years and $60 million, with $25 million of it guaranteed. And it gives the Eagles a plethora of riches at cornerback, much

Now, who do the Eagles think they are -- the Phillies? In a stealth midnight maneuver out of Ruben Amaro's diary on the acquisition of Cliff Lee last December, the Eagles signed prized free agent Nnamdi Asomugha on Friday. Just as the Phillies stole Lee from higher bidders like the Yankees and the Rangers, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman swiped the coveted Raiders' cornerback from New York and Texas teams. The Jets and Cowboys were reportedly slugging it out for Asomugha's services when the Eagles dived into the mix and swiped the Pro Bowl corner from under their unsuspecting facemasks. "It's been a lot of fun," Roseman said Friday at Lehigh University. It sure has

Marcus Spears is staying with the Dallas Cowboys . It's not exactly the headline the Cowboys had hoped for Friday, but their retention of the run-stuffing defensive end gave them solace after they lost out on a furious late bid to land cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha . Asomugha, the plum pick of this free agent class, agreed to a five-year, $60 million deal with Dallas' NFC East rival, the Philadelphia Eagles . The former Oakland Raiders star is guaranteed to receive $25 million from the Eagles. Leave it to the Philadelphia Eagles to rain on the Cowboys' parade. As the team was nearing a potential agreement for cornerback Nmandi Asomugha, the Eagles came out of nowhere and offered the shutdown corner a 5-year $60 million contract that gave one of the Cowboys' biggest rivals the best secondary in the NFL. With three All-Pro CB's now in the wings, there's no doubt who the front-runner is for the upcoming season in the NFC East. Most fans were shocked to hear Asmougha had signed with the Eagles, especially after the sweepstakes for the most coveted free agent appeared to be a two-horse race ... until the Eagles came in at the last second. The Dallas Cowboys may have left the Nmandi Asomugha sweepstakes empty-handed, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. As Jerry Jones told 105.3 FM The Fan, he made a huge push for the cornerback. Earlier reports had stated Jones and the Cowboys weren't in running for Asomugha, but Jones confirmed that wasn't the case: the team was all-in when it came to landing one of the prized free agents of the draft. "That all of a sudden fit, and you've got to be ready for that," Jerry Jones said. "It's like being the option quarterback. "... We had an opportunity. We acted on it, and believe me, we firmly acted on it until my eyes watered."

A surprise team has reportedly landed Nnamdi Asomugha, and it's bad news for the Cowboys. The NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles have come to terms with the top free agent, NFL Insider Jay Glazer and NFL.com writer Jason La Canfora reported. The deal is rumored to be for five years and $60 million. Owner Jerry Jones had no comment, when asked by KRLD-FM Friday. "We're negotiating with some free agents," Jones said. "Since this thing is by the minute, it's highly competitive. I really don't want to make any committment that might influence that one way or another. No one thought we could be active in the super area of free agency. ... We're going for it." The Cowboys have said they are

When a story blindsides everyone as much as the pursuit of star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha has, perhaps it's a good idea to take a step back and consider the lessons learned. 1. You are free to follow every twist and turn in a story like this, on a handful of cable networks and on Twitter, but be prepared to discover that absolutely no one knows what they're talking about. That, and that your spouse is leaving you for ignoring the kids. 2. Jets coach Rex Ryan cannot simply snap his fingers to attract all the great players to Florham Park, no matter how many **@*$% snacks he serves up. 3. Giants coach Tom Coughlin, upon hearing the rival Philadelphia Eagles landed Asomugha, might

The Jets got burned today in a bad way. After scrambling for the last few days to get the top prize in free agency, Nnamdi Asomugha, the Jets were left holding the bag. It was an empty one too. Asomugha goes to the Eagles, a team that was not even mentioned at all during this process. It goes to show you that all of the writers following these stories don't know JACK. Nnamdi used the Cowboys and Jets to drive up the price, only to dump them both to play in Philly. To add insult to injury, the team also lost cornerback Drew Coleman to Jacksonville this evening. That puts the Jets in a bad spot in the secondary. Darrelle Revis, Kyle Wilson and Dwight Lowery are the only veteran cornerbacks

Since Wednesday, the Jets have essentially been in a holding pattern, waiting for a decision from free-agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. The mystery winner? ESPN reported the Philadelphia Eagles swooped in, reaching agreement with Asomugha on a five-year, $60 million deal. The Dallas Cowboys were perceived to be making a late push for the coveted player. Also in the mix earlier were the San Francisco 49ers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But the Eagles surprised everyone. The Jets made a strong push. They reached out to the former Oakland Raiders star on Tuesday, when the free agency negotiating period opened. They held off on other free agents and made moves that appeared to be clearing cap

For two days, the Jets' pursuit of Nnamdi Asomugha kept the franchise beholden and their fan base breathless. Would the Jets pull it off? Would they corral the game's two best cornerbacks, further emboldening the NFL's boldest head coach? In the end, they did not. And neither did the Dallas Cowboys, nor the San Francisco 49ers, nor any of the teams openly linked for days and weeks and months to the coveted free-agent. While all eyes were on the Jets and the Cowboys, the Philadelphia Eagles were the shocking winner of the Asomugha sweepstakes , their name revealed only when FoxSports.com reported the former Oakland star had agreed to what later was reported as a five-year, $60 million deal

Nnamdi Asomugha's four-day flirtation with the Jets turned out to be one big tease as the most coveted free agent in the league opted to wear a different shade of green. In a surprising move, the All-Pro corner spurned the Jets to sign a five-year, $60 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. Gang Green and the Cowboys were believed to be the front-runners to land Asomugha for most of the day Friday before Philadelphia seemingly emerged from the shadows to scoop him up. The player Eagles fans clamored for when last season ended is coming to Philadelphia. That's right. Nnamdi Asomugha is a Philadelphia Eagle. Say it again. Nnamdi Asomugha is a Philadelphia Eagle. One day after acquiring Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie from Arizona for Kevin Kolb, the Eagles came out of nowhere to snag über-cornerback Asomugha, arguably the best at his position in the league. Asomugha was supposedly going to the Jets or the Texans or the Cowboys. The Eagles weren't even in the picture. Especially after acquiring Rodgers-Cromartie. But secretly they were. The Jets are officially in a holding pattern. Prized free agent Nnamdi Asomugha is keeping the team waiting as he weighs his options. The competition for his services thinned last night when the Texans agreed to a deal with cornerback Johnathan Joseph, taking them out of the Asomugha sweepstakes. The Jets and 49ers reportedly are the front-runners to land Asomugha. As they wait on Asomugha, the Jets are asking other free-agent targets to be patient. That cost them multipurpose threat Brad Smith yesterday, who agreed to a four-year, $15 million deal with the Bills, according to a source. The Jets told Smith they wanted him back, but they never made him a firm contract offer, his agent said.

The big question of NFL free agency is the same one looming at the Jets' Florham Park facility: Where will Nnamdi Asomugha play next year? The coveted free-agent cornerback has been the Jets' focus since signing receiver Santonio Holmes on Wednesday. They're not alone - though the Houston Texans agreeing to terms on a five-year deal with cornerback Johnathan Joseph, according to ESPN, appears to help the Jets. The Jets initially contacted Asomugha on Tuesday. The San Francisco 49ers and the Texans were also in hot pursuit, but now the Joseph deal presumably eliminates Houston from the race.
