Neftali Feliz News & Rumors
Neftali Feliz's role uncertain when he returns, says Ron Washington
May 26
Dallas Morning News
"
Neftali Feliz is not guaranteed a spot in the Rangers' rotation when he returns from the disabled list, manager Ron Washington said Friday. Feliz, in his first season as a starter, went on the disabled list Monday because of a sprained ligament in the right elbow and is expected to be out until at least late June. In his first public comments since the injury, Feliz said through an interpreter that "in my mind" he will go back into the rotation when healthy. Washington begged to differ. Feliz's primary concern, Washington said, should be getting healthy. The club will take it from there. "We're not ready to discuss what he's going to do or not do," Washington said. "Get healthy, and when

Rangers likely without Neftali Feliz for two months; Roy Oswalt a possibility
May 22
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
"
General manager Jon Daniels confirmed that the Rangers will consider free-agent right-hander Roy Oswalt as they decide what to do with the rotation vacancy created by the elbow injury to Neftali Feliz. The Rangers watched Oswalt throw Friday in Mississippi and are believed to be one of three teams with interest in him, along with Philadelphia and Boston. Daniels said that Oswalt is not ready to pitch in a big-league game. "We'll consider all our options, whatever's best for the team going forward," Daniels said. "He [Oswalt] is still out there. He hasn't faced hitters yet. He's not an immediate option."
"
Jon Daniels: Rangers must consider "what's best for Neftali Feliz"
May 22
Dallas Morning News
"
The Rangers are looking at life without Neftali Feliz for at least six weeks and the team is now scrambling on how to fill a long-term hole in the rotation. "We're going to consider all our options," Rangers GM Jon Daniels said. "We'll look internally and externally. Everything is on the table." It's unclear what this will mean long-term for Feliz. He lasted only seven starts after moving from the bullpen before suffering a sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. The Rangers aren't going to make plans for whether he'll remain in the rotation or return to the bullpen anytime soon.

Rangers place Neftali Feliz on DL, consider Oswalt
May 22
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
"
Right-hander Neftali Feliz, who battled command issues over 4 2/3 innings Friday night, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with elbow inflammation. He was in Arlington this morning for an MRI exam -- the results of which are pending -- but the Rangers decided to shut him down rather than give him the opportunity to work through the discomfort. The Rangers have recalled right-handed reliever Yoshinori Tateyama from Triple A Round Rock and will start Scott Feldman on Wednesday in Feliz's spot in the rotation. Feliz, who is transitioning from the closer's role to the rotation this season, experienced tightness in his shoulder around the halfway point of spring training and was shut

Rangers to place Neftali Feliz on disabled list

Right-hander Neftali Feliz, who battled command issues over 4 2/3 innings Friday night, will be placed on the 15-day disabled list today with an elbow injury. He was in Arlington this morning for an MRI exam -- the results of which are pending -- but the Rangers decided to shut him down rather than give him the opportunity to work through the discomfort. Neftali Feliz gets the message: "I've got to prepare myself better"
May 20
Dallas Morning News
"
Ron Washington said he was trying to send a message to Neftali Feliz on Friday night with his early-removal from the Rangers' 4-1 win over Houston. Perhaps this is a sign they are on the same page: Feliz "absolutely" felt like that's what Washington was doing. "He let me know that I have to get ahead of hitters," Feliz said through an interpreter. "That's the only way I'm going to have success. You have to get in front. My main focus was for us to get a win, but I've got to prepare myself better to get in a better physical position to succeed."

Feliz to skip Saturday's start to get extra rest
April 26
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
"
Neftali Feliz spent the off-season preparing for a full season as a starter, but has no problems with the Texas Rangers skipping his start this time through the rotation. Feliz won't make his scheduled start Saturday against Tampa Bay, as the Rangers are using last Saturday's doubleheader, coupled with today's off day, to give Feliz extra rest. He allowed a solo home run in one inning out of the bullpen Wednesday, and could see relief duty the first two games against the Rays. The Rangers have Matt Harrison, Colby Lewis and Derek Holland scheduled to start this weekend against the Rays. Yu Darvish will pitch the opener Monday at Toronto on five days' rest, followed by Feliz and Harrison.

Neftali Feliz knows his high change ups spell trouble
April 16
Dallas Morning News
"
Right-hander Neftali Feliz retired the first 10 batters he faced Sunday and extended his string of shutout innings to 11 before allowing a two-run homer to Clete Thomas in the fifth. Feliz allowed the homer on a high change-up. Thomas had also hit a ball to the wall in right center on another high change-up. Feliz started the sixth, but gave up a triple to Denard Span , a run-scoring single to Jamey Carroll and walked Joe Mauer. "I've got to keep low. That change-up got away from me and he got hold of it," Feliz said, referring to Thomas' home run. "I'm going to keep throwing it; I just have to get it done in the strike zone. It's a good pitch for me."
"
It's official ... Neftali Feliz's dominance of Mariners is historic
April 12
Dallas Morning News
"
Neftali Feliz's dominance of Seattle is officially historic. Feliz held the Mariners hitless in their first 58 at-bats against him, dating to 2009, before he allowed a fourth inning single to Justin Smoak Tuesday. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it is the longest hitless streak against one team to start a career since the expansion era began in 1961. The previous mark was held by Billy Wagner, who held Pittsburgh hitless for 48 at-bats from 1996-2001.
"
Joe Nathan: Feliz is reason I'm with the Rangers
April 11
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
"
When the Texas Rangers signed closer Joe Nathan this off-season, general manager Jon Daniels viewed it as a two-player acquistion. With Nathan as the closer, Neftali Feliz would move into the starting rotation. The moves paid off Tuesday night. Feliz threw seven scoreless innings in his starting debut, and Nathan got the save in a 1-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners at Rangers Ballpark. It was save No. 2 for Nathan in a Rangers uniform, and he gives credit to Feliz for being in that situation.
"
Neftali Feliz uses 'phenomenal' mix of pitches to stifle Seattle in first start
April 11
Dallas Morning News
"
As one tweeter asked: "Will this stop the questions about how will [Neftali Feliz] ever recover from Game 6?" Yeah, not sure Game 6 of the World Series was ever on Feliz's mind Tuesday, but he certainly made a statement with seven shutout innings in a 1-0 win over Seattle in his first-ever Major League start. "It was a dream come true for me," Feliz said. "I've always wanted to be a starter in the big leagues and finally it's happened. I give thanks to the Rangers organization for giving me this chance, now here I am."
"
Rangers' Neftali Feliz has the stuff to dominate, but don't expect him to... yet
April 1
Dallas Morning News
"
Ron Washington preaches that all he wants from his starters is to keep the Rangers in the game. Neftali Feliz can do that much. Dominate? Not as a starter. Not yet, anyway. But not many fifth starters have the kind of stuff that would even make it a possibility. The question, then, is whether Feliz's secondary pitches will be good enough to keep him in games through the sixth inning and keep the bullpen from overheating. Against Cleveland on Saturday, in Feliz's last Arizona start, the answer was "almost."
"
Feliz works 84 pitches, five innings in Texas Rangers' victory
April 1
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
"
Rangers right-hander Neftali Feliz struggled occasionally with his command in his final Cactus League start Saturday night, but he emerged healthy after logging 84 pitches in five innings against Cleveland. He surrendered a homer to the first hitter he faced, Michael Brantley, and allowed another leadoff homer in the fourth inning to Jason Kipnis. Of more concern was a 35-pitch second inning in which Feliz walked three batters. The final walk forced in a run to tie the game 2-2. When Feliz was replaced by left-hander Neal Cotts to start the sixth, the Rangers led 7-3, thanks in part to homers by Ian Kinsler and Mitch Moreland. Texas used four pitchers in a 7-4 victory. Stiff shoulder? Neftali Feliz hits 96 mph in minor league start
March 28
Dallas Morning News
"
Right-hander Neftali Feliz got back on track to make the season-opening rotation after missing a week while dealing with some shoulder stiffness. Feliz threw 66 pitches in four innings and hit 96 mph with his fastball and was regularly at 93-94 mph in a minor league game against Kansas City's Double-A club. "I felt good," Feliz said. "The shoulder was no problem. I wasn't trying to throw hard, just trying to get all my pitches down and feel good."
"
Neftali Feliz to pitch in minors Tuesday to protect DL possibility
March 27
Dallas Morning News
"
RHP Neftali Feliz will return to the mound Tuesday eight days after a stiff shoulder gave the Rangers a scare. They aren't, however, throwing caution to the wind. Feliz will pitch in a Double-A game Tuesday evening so that if he experiences any more soreness, the club would be able to keep his potential time on the DL to a minimum. Monday was the earliest a DL move could be backdated. A player appearing in any "A" game after Monday must be placed on the DL on the date of the injury.
"
Neftali Feliz throws 43-pitch bullpen session, on track to start Tuesday
March 26
Dallas Morning News
"
Rangers manager Ron Washington said RHP Neftali Feliz had no issues during his 43-pitch bullpen session Sunday morning. If he reports no residual soreness, he is expected to pitch on Tuesday against San Diego and would be on track to open the season in the starting rotation. Feliz left his start last Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs after three innings with shoulder stiffness. He was given several extra days of rest and played long-toss catch, then threw 27 pitches off the mound.
"
Neftali Feliz still dealing with shoulder stiffness
March 23
Dallas Morning News
"
Neither Neftali Feliz nor the Rangers seem too concerned about the shoulder stiffness that knocked him out of his most recent start early. Nevertheless, it's very possible he'll be sent to the minors. At least for one spring training start. Feliz had a long-toss session on Thursday and he will repeat the activity on Friday. His bullpen session will be moved back until Saturday. Manager Ron Washington declined to comment on whether Feliz would make his next scheduled start, which is Monday at Cincinnati.
"
Neftali Feliz could make next scheduled start
March 23
Dallas Morning News
"
The Rangers are treating RHP Neftali Feliz's shoulder stiffness as just typical spring-time aches and pains and manager Ron Washington said it's possible he could still take his next scheduled turn in the starting rotation on Monday. Feliz is scheduled to play long-toss catch today rather than throw in the bullpen. If that goes well, he'll throw in the bullpen on Friday and then the Rangers would make a determination about his next start. "We'll see where it goes the next couple of days," Washington said. "It's just normal."
"
Netali Feliz receives treatment, reports improvement
March 22
Dallas Morning News
"
Rangers right-hander Neftali Feliz, who left his start Tuesday after three innings with shoulder stiffness, received treatment Wednesday at the Rangers facility and reported improvement. He will be re-evaluated Thursday. The Rangers don't view the situation as serious enough to merit an MRI exam at the time. An MRI might reveal changes to the area around the shoulder joint. This is not a new situation for Feliz. He had shoulder soreness last spring that did not keep him from starting the season as the team's closer. However, it resurfaced in late April, and he missed two weeks.
"
Rangers' Neftali Feliz pitches three strong innings, but leaves early with shoulder injury
March 21
Dallas Morning News
"
The moment the Rangers dread hit them Tuesday. Neftali Feliz rubbed his right arm. A little rub by Feliz, a little comment about "tightness" to pitching coach Mike Maddux and that's all it took to force Feliz prematurely from his start against the Chicago Cubs. Instead of going four innings, as all the other members of the rotation have, Feliz was pulled after three.
"
Double-play grounders a good sign for Texas Rangers' Feliz
March 15
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
"
For Neftali Feliz to have success and pitch deep into games this season, he will have to manage his pitch count. One way to do that is to get as many double play balls as possible. Feliz induced two of them during his start on Wednesday in a game the Rangers fell 6-1 to the Colorado Rockies at Surprise Stadium. Feliz started the game with a perfect first inning, striking out two. In the second, he gave up consecutive one-out doubles to Todd Helton and Jordan Pacheco and a single to Tyler Colvin. Despite giving up one run, he got out of the inning by inducing a double-play grounder from Brendan Harris with a changeup outside.
"
Texas Rangers' Feliz works on off-speed pitches in first start
March 9
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
"
The curiosity factor, at least on the public scale, had plummeted by Thursday afternoon after reaching an all-time high only 24 hours earlier. Neftali Feliz's first start of the spring couldn't come close to the level of hype generated for Yu Darvish on Wednesday. But the closer-to-starter move Feliz is making is just as important to the Texas Rangers this season as Darvish's transition from Japan to the major leagues. And there might be more questions about Feliz, starting with how many innings will he be able to handle and how effective can his off-speed pitches be.
"
Neftali Feliz getting advice from Pedro Martinez
January 16
Dallas Morning News
"
Rangers RHP Neftali Feliz, who is attempting to convert back to being a starter after 2-plus seasons in the bullpen, has met once with former Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez about the process and the duo will get together for a throwing session sometime in the next month. Martinez also transitioned from the bullpen to the rotation and had a similar pitching repertoire to Feliz. Martinez developed one of the most devastating changeups in major league history to supplement his hard fastball. Any young power pitcher - particularly with a good changeup - is compared to Martinez. For pitchers with that repertoire of Latin American lineage, the comparisons are even more prevalent.
"
Rangers move Neftali Feliz to rotation, sign Joe Nathan to close
November 22
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
"
Big news from the two-time defending American League champions. The Rangers have signed former All-Star closer Joe Nathan to a two-year contract with a club option and have moved Neftali Feliz to the starting rotation. That could be indication that the Rangers are out on the bidding for C.J. Wilson, though a source indicated that the Rangers haven't ruled out trying to re-sign the free agent. Nathan missed all of the 2010 season after having Tommy John elbow replacement surgery. The right-hander, who turns 37 on Tuesday, saved 14 games last year for Minnesota after a lousy start to the season. His best two months were July and September.

Neftali Feliz 'has got to grow up emotionally' if he wants to be great
November 18
Dallas Morning News
columnist Evan Grant
"
On whether Feliz should've come back out to pitch the 10th inning of Game 6: Grant : I don't know that anybody quite grasped how decimated he was. But I think certainly, you've just blown a two-run lead with two outs in the ninth inning, there's going to be some kind of toll that that takes. For me, you would've been asking Neftali to do something he hasn't done all year, which is now go out and pitch a second inning after he had that really rough ninth inning. You had two left-handed hitters coming up, you now had a two-run lead again, it was the two bottom hitters in the order. I don't have a problem with him going to Darren Oliver there to finish things out. And when, in retrospect, you

Rangers closer Feliz vows to rebound from Series showing
October 30
Dallas Morning News

Rangers closer Neftali Feliz avoided the full Calvin Schiraldi treatment in the World Series. As Schiraldi did with Boston in 1986, Feliz failed to get the final strike that would have closed out the World Series in six games. David Freese lined an outside fastball off the right-field wall for a game-tying triple in the ninth inning of Game 6. Schiraldi also lost Game 7, allowing three runs in 1/3 of an inning. The Rangers did not use Feliz on Friday in the 6-2 loss to St. Louis in Game 7. Schiraldi, a former Texas Longhorn, never pitched for Boston again. He was traded to the Chicago Cubs in December 1987. He also pitched with San Diego and the Rangers, making the final three appearances

Fraley: Feliz is a 'real, real concern' for the Rangers
August 13
Dallas Morning News
"
Gerry Fraley joined Norm Hitzges on KTCK-1310 AM on Wednesday. Here are some highlights. Let's say the Rangers deal for Heath Bell. Do they hand him the closing job immediately? Gerry Fraley: No. Let's just say they get him. The first week to 10 days, he pitches the eighth inning, which he insists he will. By all accounts, Heath Bell is a tremendous teammate. Really wants to win; he's tired of losing. But I think after about 10 days, Ron Washington can say, 'Look, Heath Bell is outpitching Neftali Feliz,' which I think would be the case. 'We're going to do what's best (for the team) not just for the one person and make a move then.' But I don't think they would do it immediately. How

Feliz still has role as Rangers closer
August 8
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
"
Neftali Feliz isn't in jeopardy of losing his closing job. At least not yet. Manager Ron Washington called Feliz his closer, although he wasn't available on Sunday night after throwing three consecutive days. Feliz blew his sixth save of the season Saturday, giving up three runs in the ninth to the Indians, who turned a 4-3 deficit into a 7-5 victory. Asked who his closer was, Washington immediately said: "Neftali." But he went on to say that Mike Adams would be used in a save situation, if the Rangers were in that position. Through his struggles, Feliz has talked with former closer C.J. Wilson, and is also trying to learn from Adams. There has been talk of Feliz relying too much on his

Neftali Feliz back in closer role to start Seattle series
August 8
Dallas Morning News
"
Neftali Feliz will return after a one-day break to the role of Rangers closer for the series opener against Seattle on Monday night. Manager Ron Washington gave Feliz the night off Sunday because Feliz had appeared in three consecutive games, throwing 52 pitches in 3 1/3 innings. Washington remains committed to Feliz as the closer despite ongoing problems and the recent addition of right-handers Mike Adams and Koji Uehara as game-ending alternatives. Adams closed out the 5-3 victory against Cleveland with a perfect ninth inning. Feliz had his second blown save in the last four chances during Saturday's 7-5 loss to Cleveland. He has six blown saves in 28 chances. A year ago, Feliz had only

Ron Washington says Feliz lacks 'fire'; Neftali disagrees
July 28
Dallas Morning News
"
In the wake of another blown save, Rangers manager Ron Washington questioned Neftali Feliz's "fire" on Wednesday, perhaps hoping to light one under the closer's feet. On Tuesday, Feliz suffered his fifth blown save of the season by allowing Minnesota a pair of ninth-inning runs in a 9-8 loss. The blown saves total is two more than he had while closing 40 games for the Rangers on the way to winning AL Rookie of the Year last season. And since his first blown save of the season against Kansas City in mid-May, Feliz has seemed to be continually shaky. In a 27-game stretch beginning with that game, Feliz has compiled a 4.62 ERA. "I'd like to see more fire," Washington said. "When he comes in

Astros tee off on Feliz in 9th to beat Rangers
June 23
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
"
The report manager Ron Washington received Wednesday afternoon was that Neftali Feliz would be ready to go later that night. Pitching coach Mike Maddux delivered the message directly from Feliz, who only a night earlier had pitched two innings and thrown 35 pitches. So, when the ninth inning rolled around Wednesday night with the Rangers in a save situation, Feliz was brought in from the bullpen to close out a series sweep of Houston. Four hits, four runs and a blown save later, the Astros were the ones exiting Rangers Ballpark with a victory. Feliz and Washington, though, weren't doing any second-guessing. Feliz got only two outs as the Astros charged back from a two-run deficit and

With the NBA Finals in full swing and the Rangers home for just three days in a 20-game span, it may be hard to keep up with what's going on with the baseball club. So, here's a quick guide to the biggest developments from the just-completed road trip: No. 1: Neftali Feliz got right. No. 2: See No. 1. After a particularly rough stretch that included three blown saves against Kansas City in a two-week span, Feliz closed out three games on the trip. He allowed a pair of singles and no walks while striking out two. On Monday, manager Ron Washington said there should be no more concerns about Feliz's place as closer. Texas Rangers television announcer Tom Grieve was interviewed on Thursday to discuss the Rangers' bullpen issues. Here are some highlights: You said earlier that if Neftali Feliz keeps throwing nothing but his fastball, even if it was 109 mph, batters would eventually be able to hit it. Were you joking? First of all, you have to go a step further than just fastballs; fastballs that aren't located well. Now, if you are throwing only fastballs - and that's pretty much what David Price was doing yesterday - exactly where he wanted to with good movement, you can still get people out. But, if you're only throwing fastballs and it doesn't have movement and it doesn't have location, then, the

The Neftali Feliz problem has come to this for the Rangers. To win a game Sunday, manager Ron Washington had to get Feliz out of the game. Feliz, the closer who has fallen on hard times, put the Rangers behind by one run in the ninth inning and was in danger of giving up more when Washington pulled the plug. Feliz left Washington with no choice. "It didn't look like he was getting it done," said Washington, with an air of resignation in his voice. The move worked. Arthur Rhodes retired No. 3 hitter Eric Hosmer, who homered against Feliz last week, with a runner on base. Nelson Cruz's homer and Mike Napoli's mad dash to score from first base on a single gave the Rangers a 7-6 comeback win

Rangers' Feliz working on corrections, including less reliance on fastball

A day after Neftali Feliz blew a save for the third time in his last four opportunities, manager Ron Washington wanted to make something so clear he didn't even wait to be directly asked about his closer's status. "We're not going to replace Neftali Feliz," Washington said. The Rangers maintain there is nothing physically wrong with Feliz, but they did address his reliance on the fastball between the ninth and 10th innings Friday. Feliz threw 14 consecutive fastballs to start the ninth, extending a stretch in which he threw fastballs on 71 of 73 pitches over four games. Washington said the situation was addressed by pitching coach Mike Maddux but said there was no "reprimand or anything

Washington: Neftali Feliz's fastball reliance not product of shoulder concerns
May 25
Dallas Morning News
"
Though Neftali Feliz's pitch selection has leaned more heavily than usual on his fastball, manager Ron Washington said the Rangers don't believe it's out of concern about his shoulder. Feliz, who spent two weeks on the disabled list with rotator cuff inflammation earlier this season, had thrown fastballs for 41 of 42 pitches in his last two outings entering Tuesday. Feliz's average fastball velocity has been down slightly this year - 94.9 mph vs. 96.3 last year, according to fangraphs.com - but the hesitancy to throw breaking balls could be seen a s a sign of concern over the stress they put on the shoulder.

Rangers manager, not Feliz, the one who deserves to feel 'cranky'

They don't need any heroes. No, the Texas Rangers know, there's still plenty of time for that. But here at the Arlington baseball infirmary -- 10 should-be Rangers on the disabled list -- it would seem to be prudent for all uniformed personnel to stop and take a look around. Add up the available bodies and pitching arms. And proceed accordingly. Cowboy up, as the expression goes. When the bullpen phone rang with the score tied in the ninth inning Saturday, old pro Darren Oliver was there to answer the Rangers' call. The Los Angeles Angels scratched out a run in a 3-2 decision, and that was that. It begs the question, though -- where was the regular ninth-inning guy? Where was young,

Return of Neftali Feliz from DL should prop up Texas Rangers' bullpen

The Texas Rangers' bullpen will receive a significant boost tonight when Neftali Feliz comes off the 15-day disabled list and returns to the closer's role. The right-hander has been out since April 23 with shoulder inflammation, but he pitched a scoreless inning Wednesday for Double A Frisco in his last test before being reinstated from the DL. Feliz will help restore some order to a bullpen that had blown saves after the seventh inning and taken the loss in games Monday and Tuesday. The Rangers' six relief losses were tied for second-most in the league entering Thursday. "I'm real excited because if we can get to the ninth inning, I feel comfortable we can get three outs," manager Ron

A beleaguered Texas Rangers pitching staff is getting closer to getting some much-needed relief. Texas closer Neftali Feliz pitched a scoreless inning Wednesday in a rehab start for Double A Frisco. He was followed on the mound by Tommy Hunter, who pitched four solid innings for the RoughRiders in a Texas League game. Most important, both pitchers came out of their appearances healthy and appear ready to help the Rangers. They both feel that's the case. "I feel good," Feliz said. "I started feeling good. I wanted to locate my fastball and all that stuff." Feliz did just that. He allowed a leadoff single, but then struck out the next three batters for San Antonio, a Padres farm club. Jaff

Good bullpen session points Feliz to Friday return

Neftali Feliz needs only to get through one inning without complications for Double A Frisco on Wednesday before the Texas Rangers reinstate their All-Star closer from the 15-day disabled list. Feliz, out with right shoulder inflammation, gave a thumbs-up after throwing 46 pitches during a bullpen session Monday at Overstock.com Stadium. After a brief discussion with manager Ron Washington and pitching coach Mike Maddux, Feliz was told of his Frisco assignment. He can be activated from the DL on Friday. "He said he felt good, so he's ready to get out of here," Washington said. "Hopefully, that goes well and we can activate him Friday when he's ready to come off." Tommy Hunter will start
