Milan Michalek News & Rumors
Accusations didn't worry Michalek
April 26
Ottawa Sun
"
Milan Michalek had no worries. The Senators winger told reporters he didn't do anything wrong while trying to get New York Rangers defenceman Dan Girardi off him in Game 6 on Monday. Michalek seemed surprised he was accused of kicking by New York officials. "I wasn't worried at all," said Michalek. "I was at the bottom of the pile and I was just trying to get out of it.

No suspension for Michalek in alleged kick
April 25
Ottawa Sun
"
Milan Michalek won't be getting the boot for an alleged kick in Game 6 Monday night. With the Senators preparing to face the New York Rangers in Game 7 Thursday at Madison Square Garden, NHL VP of safety Brendan Shanahan studied tape of the incident that took place on Jason Spezza's late goal in the 3-2 loss. League sources say Rangers blueliner Dan Girardi complained that his pant leg was cut by Michalek's skate. It would have made sense to hold a hearing Tuesday, but Shanahan looked and took a pass. Sources say Rangers GM Glen Sather sent raw CBC video to Shanahan, asking for the league to take action because the replay showed Michalek flat on his belly with Girardi on top and using his

Ottawa forward Milan Michalek will not face supplemental discipline for using his skate to shove Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi during a pile-up of players in the crease late in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals on Monday night at Scotiabank Place. Senior Vice President of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan issued a warning that similar behavior will not be tolerated from Michalek in a phone call to Ottawa GM Bryan Murray on Tuesday afternoon.

NHL investigates alleged kick involving Senators' Michalek

Ottawa Senators forward Milan Michalek could be in hot water with the NHL. NHL VP of safety Brendan Shanahan is studying an incident in the third period of Monday's Game 6 of the Senators - New York Rangers series in which Michalek is alleged to have kicked Rangers defenceman Dan Girardi. The incident occurred on the Jason Spezza goal at 19:21 of the third period which brought the Senators within a goal. Ottawa lost the game 3-2. Sources confirmed to the Sun Tuesday morning Shanahan has acquired the CBC footage of the play. If Giradri's claim is verified, Michalek could face a fine or suspension before Game 7 of the series on Thursday in New York.

It's a little after 10 on a magnificent Friday morning in Manhattan when, walking among the thousands on 42nd Street, we bump into three guys from Ottawa -- Chris Phillips, Daniel Alfredsson and Chris Neil. "What are the odds?" I say a few moments later to Bruce Garrioch. "This city ain't so big after all." Now, I'm thinking we might even be able to find Milan Michalek. I hear he's here, but I don't think I actually saw him the night before during a 4-2 loss to the Rangers that leaves the Senators one down after one game in a best-of-seven. "That's a little harsh, isn't it?" says Tony "Trigger" Caldwell, the third member of Team Sun spreading the news from and surrounding the first round

Flat out, Craig Anderson holds the key to the Senators' success. If he can match or outperform Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist, they have a decent chance of extending their surprising season. But two other factors also loom large for Ottawa in an opening-round playoff series that starts Thursday night at Madison Square Garden. A) Can the team's hot and cold offence stay at least lukewarm? B) Can the young and inexperienced Senators avoid making detrimental mistakes?

Sens' Michalek in rare company
March 8
Ottawa Sun
"
Milan Michalek had a good laugh when asked if he felt embarrassed to complete his hat trick with two empty-net goals Tuesday night. "A little bit," he said. "But they count, and I'm happy for it." As well he should be, especially considering the company he now keeps. The 27-year-old winger joined Mario Lemieux and Marcel Dionne as the only three players in NHL history to score goal Nos. 2 and 3 of a trick into a vacated cage, when he sealed the Senators' 7-3 victory over Tampa. Both of the two career hat tricks Michalek has registered have been against the Lightning, with the most recent coming at a critical time as it was in the third period of a game that looked like it would become the

Michalek 'salute' a mystery
February 23
Ottawa Sun
"
Milan Michalek is officially having the best season of his career. But it was the celebration after the goal he scored to tie his previous high mark that raised some eyebrows. After taking a long, hard bank pass from teammate Erik Karlsson, undressing Capitals defenceman Dennis Wideman and slipping a shot by Tomas Vokoun for his 26th of the season, Michalek uncharacteristically removed a glove and waggled a finger in the air. Some kind of Jaromir Jagr salute, was it? "No, my buddy from back home in Czech came, and he said if I score I have to do that," Michalek said, giggling. "It was an inside joke."

Melnyk's "greatest" boast gives Karlsson big shoes to fill

Just think of the great ones: Bobby Orr, Doug Harvey, Nicklas Lidstrom, Ray Bourque, Denis Potvin, Larry Robinson, and Paul Coffey. Not to mention Red Kelly, Chris Chelios, Tom Johnson, Rod Langway, Doug Wilson, and Scott Niedermayer, all among the more accomplished defencemen to play in the NHL. Heady company, indeed, especially for a 21-year-defenceman who is only in his third NHL season. But that is the company that Erik Karlsson found himself in after Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk reached for the hyperbole on Sunday and predicted that Karlsson will "go down in history as one of the great defenceman of all time."

Former Shark Milan Michalek returns to San Jose as an NHL All-Star
January 19
San Jose Mercury News
"
When Milan Michalek first arrived in San Jose, he was an apprehensive 18-year-old able to speak only the most basic English. "It was very hard," said the Czech Republic native. "I could barely understand what the coaches were saying." The Michalek who returns to HP Pavilion on Thursday night with the surprising Ottawa Senators has blossomed into one of the NHL's top goal scorers. Now a poised veteran at 27, he has nothing but warm memories of his first NHL home -- both on and off the ice. "It's really where I grew up," said Michalek, who already has 23 goals, just three shy of his career high with the Sharks in 2006-07. "I can still remember how nice everyone was to me when I first came

The Senators won the Battle of Ontario at the ballot box. And not only did fans vote four Senators into the NHL all-star game starting lineup, the Ottawa Sun has learned that Daniel Alfredsson will be named one of the captains for the Jan. 29 game at Scotibank Place. Toronto's Phil Kessel, who led the voting going into the final week of voting, was bumped out of the lineup. Ottawa swept the three forward spots with Alfredsson, Jason Spezza and Milan Michalek getting in. Erik Karlsson will start on defence. They'll be joined by Toronto defenceman Dion Phaneuf and Boston goalie Tim Thomas. It was difficult for the players to hide their excitement after an outstanding final push by Ottawa

Sens' Michalek looks to regain scoring touch

When Milan Michalek banged his head off the ice in Buffalo Dec. 13, he led the NHL with 19 goals. Three weeks later, the Senators winger is in his first four-game slump of the season — and still looking for No. 20. Michalek, in fact, has just one assist in the four games he has played since returning from the concussion he sustained in a collision with Erik Karlsson. "I thought was fine," coach Paul MacLean said after Monday's 3-2 overtime win over the New Jersey Devils. "He had some opportunities. The puck hasn't gone in the net for him since he came back, but he's playing fine."

Michalek to return on Tuesday

"
Milan Michalek will make his return to the lineup on Tuesday when the Senators take on the Montreal Canadiens. Ottawa head coach Paul MacLean officially announced the move on Monday afternoon. Michalek was listed as day-to-day after suffering a concussion during a 3-2 overtime victory against the Buffalo Sabres on December 13. He will miss a total of five games while recovering.

Ottawa Senators forward Milan Michalek, out since Dec. 13 with a concussion, participated in Thursday's morning skate while wearing a grey no-contact jersey and will not play in the game against the Florida Panthers. Michalek will take a baseline test today to assess his progress, but wants to concentrate on his conditioning before returning.

Sens' Michalek nears return, Winchester begins recovey

Ottawa Senators winger Milan Michalek took another step toward recovery from a concussion Wednesday, while Jesse Winchester finds himself starting from scratch. Michalek, who was injured in a freak collision with teammate Erik Karlsson last week, said he felt good after his first full practice with the team since that day. Although he said it was 'unlikely' that he would play Thursday night at home against the Florida Panthers, he didn't rule out Friday's contest in Raleigh.

Michalek brothers deal with concussions
December 15
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
"
There is a certain, sad symmetry to it all. Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek , who has missed the past seven games because of a concussion, expects to be back in the lineup Friday when they visit the Ottawa Senators. His brother Milan , a Senators forward who had dressed for all 31 of his team's games this season and led the NHL with 19 goals before Wednesday night, nearly certainly will not be in uniform against the Penguins. Because of, you guessed it, a concussion.

Michalek concussion a huge blow to Sens
December 15
Ottawa Sun
"
This is a huge headache for the Senators. The club has lost league-leading goal-scorer Milan Michalek after he became the NHL's latest player to suffer a concussion as a result of a collision with teammate Erik Karlsson in the second period of Tuesday's 3-2 OT victory in Buffalo. Michalek didn't suit up Wednesday night against the Boston Bruins as the Senators opened a four-game homestand at Scotiabank Place and there is no timetable for his return, but coach Paul MacLean doesn't believe the 19-goal scorer will be gone long.

Michalek out with concussion
December 14
Ottawa Citizen
"
Michalek suffered a concussion following a freak collision with teammate Erik Karlsson during Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres and he'll likely miss at least several more games before being cleared to play. "Right now, we have to follow the concussion protocol," said coach Paul MacLean. "So, right now, he's day to day." MacLean said Michalek felt better Wednesday morning, but under normal circumstances, a player has to go at least a week with no symptoms before being cleared to return from a concussion.

Michalek surprises with scoring outburst
December 6
Ottawa Citizen
columnist Wayne Scanlan
"
Of all the unlikely December hockey scenarios, we confronted this one at Scotiabank Place on Monday: Milan Michalek of the Ottawa Senators dueling with Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning for the NHL goal-scoring lead. In fact, the three-way tie among Michalek, Stamkos and Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs, each with 16 goals at the start of Monday's games, has fantasy pool players wondering what in the name of Alex Ovechkin is going on in the Rocket Richard race. Stamkos? No surprise there. The 21-year-old super star in the making has already won a Richard trophy (shared with Sidney Crosby) as a 51-goal scorer in 2010. Kessel has produced a troika of 30-goal seasons in Boston

Michalek's a sharp shooter
November 18

Milan Michalek has always been considered a talented player. Staying healthy, however, has at times proven to be a challenge for him. The Senators winger had knee issues that limited his effectiveness in the nation's capital. Yet, this year Michalek is healthy, happy and scoring goals at an impressive rate. "I just feel good, I'm healthy, I've been playing with a lot of confidence and am happy to having got off to a good start," Michalek said. "I hope things can continue like that. I know it's a long season and there are going to be some ups and downs. "I've had problems with my knees the last two years, but this year I was healthy and I was able to do a lot more this summer. Sens' Michalek hopes to maintain 50-goal pace

Ottawa Citizen
"
Milan Michalek couldn't resist the temptation. When someone did the math on the 11 goals the Ottawa Senators forward had scored in the first 18 games and found out that put him on a pace to score 50 this season, the inevitable question was asked: So, Milan, do you think you'll score 50 goals this year? Michalek didn't hesitate. "Yeah, sure," he responded. "No problem." And then he joined the room in a loud round of laughter. Michalek knows this is a question better asked when there are 10 or 15 games left in the season, so he's not going to jinx himself now by getting anywhere close to making a prediction. What he is serious about, though, is getting back to the form he displayed in his

In his first two seasons with the Senators, Milan Michalek was never picked to participate in a shootout. That changed Tuesday, when Paul MacLean tapped No. 9 on the back as his first choice to settle the score against Minnesota. Of all the players he inherited when taking over the coaching job, MacLean knew Michalek best from when they worked mostly in the Western Conference as a Red Wings assistant and Sharks winger. "He's always been a good player when I've seen him," MacLean said of his decision to pick Michalek. "I believe in the shootout, you put your best players out there." Michalek did not disappoint. The Senators have had a lot of problems with shootouts in the past, but

Michalek poised to return to Sens lineup

The Senators carried some extra baggage on their flight here Monday afternoon. Winger Milan Michalek, who was on the ice with the club at Scotiabank Place in the morning, came along for the ride and will play either Tuesday in Raleigh or Thursday in New York. Recovering from a broken foot he suffered after getting hit by a Jason Spezza shot on Feb. 26hth against the Flyers, Michalek is excited about returning before the end of the season.

Question mark over Michalek
February 28
Ottawa Sun
"
The Senators may have suffered another hit to their already depleted lineup. Winger Milan Michalek, who took a shot off the foot from centre Jason Spezza Saturday in a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers, will have further tests Sunday and an update is expected Monday. There is major concern the news may not be good for Michalek who has 16-13-29 points in 58 games this season. He missed the latter part of last season after having knee surgery. If tests reveal there's a broken bone in the foot, then Michalek's season could be over just at a time when he was playing some of his best hockey of the season. He left the game in the second period.

The Ottawa Senators will get back at least one of their injured players back for tonight's game against the Atlanta Thrashers and should get the other one back for Thursday's matchup with the Vancouver Canucks. Left-winger Milan Michalek, who has missed four games while nursing tendinitis in his surgically repaired left knee, pronounced himself ready to play, pending a last-minute check after today's morning skate. "We'll see (this) morning if it's still good," he said. "Hopefully it's going to be good in the morning skate and I should be able to play." Defenceman Filip Kuba also practised on Monday, but said he would "probably not" play against the Thrashers. His right leg, broken on the

More than 6,400 kids from 233 classes in 61 schools took a field trip to Scotiabank Place to watch the local NHL team practise Monday. "That was loud," coach Cory Clouston said afterward and then, with what seemed like a jab at the generally reserved Senators hockey fans, added: "They can make some noise in that building." With all the screaming and cheering from the children, Clouston could barely hear himself think. One of the things he was thinking, the media found out at his daily press conference, is that Milan Michalek and Filip Kuba looked like they'd be good to play in Tuesday's game against the Thrashers. Milan Michalek is getting close to returning. The Senators winger, who has been out for a week with tendinitis in his knee, skated Saturday at the Bell Centre for the first time and is encouraged by the result. Milan Michalek wasn't on the ice Thursday at Scotiabank Place. But he will be in the Senators lineup. The forward was giving his surgically repaired knee a rest before facing the Florida Panthers as Ottawa tries to string together two straight victories for the first time this season. Michalek, who had off-season surgery to repair the knee, didn't practise Wednesday and is going to save his energy for the game. The Senators don't want him bothered anymore by what's already an issue. "We're just making sure that he's able to play (Thursday). We don't want to be in a situation where we aggravate it in the morning skate," said Senators coach Cory Clouston. "It's a process, I've said this many

Milan Michalek will be ready to roll this season. Nearly recovered from knee surgery for an ACL he re-injured in the club's first playoff game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Michalek told the Senators' website Friday he believes he'll be ready to go. After spending a month in Montreal following the surgery and then returning to the Czech Republic for a month, Michalek is back in Montreal training with the likes of Martin Havlat. "I'm getting ready for the season here," Michalek said. "I've started skating and I've felt pretty good." The Ottawa Senators are crossing their fingers that Milan Michalek could be back from his injured left knee in time for the playoffs. In a best case scenario, the power winger, who is tied with Mike Fisher with a team-high 22 goals, could be back in the lineup in 10 days. In the worst case, Michalek's season could be over and surgery could be necessary. Michalek suffered the injury when he hit the post, charging to the net in a 6-3 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers last Thursday. Team doctors are hoping that the knee responds well to treatment and rest. "He's a good player for us, he kills a lot of penalties, a big, strong aggressive forward and it just gives an opportunity to someone else and

Sens fear worst for Milan

The Senators were concerned about another loss in the hours leading up to Monday's clash with the Habs. The loss of Milan Michalek. While Ottawa was wrestling with Montreal for playoff position, the first-line left winger was back in the nation's capital having an MRI done on his left knee. Michalek hurt it crashing into a goalpost Thursday in Atlanta. At the time, it looked pretty bad. But while Michalek gave the knee a quick test at practice Friday, coach Cory Clouston said it was believed the injury to be not as serious as originally feared. After Monday's morning skate, Clouston said it now could be. The results of the MRI will be revealed by the team at Tuesday's morning skate. With

Senators brace for result of MRI on Michalek's leg

There was a bit of optimism among the Senator hierarchy when Milan Michalek tried to skate on Friday in Dallas, the day after he hurt his left leg after crashing into the Atlanta Thrasher net. That optimism has faded. Michalek hasn't skated since and on Monday he had a MRI. The team should have the results today, but coach Cory Clouston had to concede the injury may be more serious than initially thought. "Yes, it is possible," said Clouston. "I don't want to speculate. We'll just wait and see how the tests go." Michalek hadn't been playing great, along with a number of his teammates. He had had only two goals in his previous 10 games. Nonetheless, he is one of the team's top offensive

NHL players need a new union. And not just because the Players' Association dumped a good man in Paul Kelly. The players need a new union because they have to push for a better holiday package. That's right. A three-month summer vacation (five months off if their team is really bad) is just not cutting it for your friendly neighbourhood millionaire hockey player. I'm talking about IN-SEASON holidays here, people. The benefits are multiple, and also painfully obvious. Take the Ottawa Senators, for example. They were hobbling along in search of respectability in the Eastern Conference until a whack of their top guns were injured. While players like Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Spezza and Milan

Michalek back in Senators' lineup against Blues

Milan Michalek will be in the lineup when the Ottawa Senators play the St. Louis Blues at Scotiabank Place Thursday night. The speedy winger had been sidelined since sustaining a concussion during a Jan. 7 game against the Washington Capitals. As a result of his return, Shean Donovan will join defenceman Alexandre Picard in the press box as a healthy scratch. Brian Elliott will start in goal for the Senators. Coach Cory Clouston plans to ease Michalek back into the lineup by starting him on the fourth line, with occasional penalty kill and power play duty.

Michalek returns to Senators

Milan Michalek is ready to return. The Senators winger, who has missed seven games with a concussion he suffered on Jan. 7th after getting hit by defenceman Mike Green in Washington, is going to come back against the St. Louis Blues Thursday which means winger Shean Donovan could be a healthy scratch. Michalek was on the ice Wednesday with Jason Spezza (knee), Jesse Winchester (knee), Mike Brodeur (flu) and healthy scratch Alex Picard. "I feel pretty good. It was good (Tuesday) and (Wednesday) when I've skated and I've felt pretty good," said Michalek. The Senators could send centre Zack Smith back to their AHL affiliate in Binghamton, but he has played strongly with two goals in three

For the Senators, injured winger Milan Michalek (concussion) and centre Jason Spezza (knee) were both on the ice this morning at Scotiabank Place. Spezza and Michalek are both likely a week away from returning to the lineup. There is no change in the status of goalie Pascal Leclaire, who is also sidelined with a concussion.

Already battered and bruised, the shorthanded Senators took another hit yesterday, losing leading goal scorer Milan Michalek to a suspected concussion. As they prepare to start one of their longest road trips of the season after hosting the Panthers tonight at Scotiabank Place, the Senators learned they'll be without Michalek, who was hurt in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Capitals in Washington, indefinitely. Michalek, who was injured in the first period after being hit by Washington blueliner Mike Green, won't be with the Senators when start a five-game road trip tomorrow in Raleigh, where they'll face the Hurricanes. Coupled with the loss of top centre Jason Spezza (knee) and captain Daniel

Ottawa Senators Cory Clouston might have an easier time squeezing blood from a stone than trying to find offence from his injury-riddled lineup. Now that left winger Milan Michalek has joined Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza on the sidelines, all three members of the club's former first line won't be available to the team for the forseeable future. Clouston provided few details on the severity of the "upper body" injury, suffered when hit by Washington Capitals defenceman Mike Green early in Thursday's 5-2 loss, but he said that Michalek wouldn't be available for Saturday's game against the Florida Panthers. Michalek also isn't expected to join the team for the beginning of the five-game

Senators' Cheechoo, Michalek excited about return to San Jose

Before they joined the Ottawa Senators in the Dany Heatley trade, Jonathan Cheechoo and Milan Michalek knew only one National Hockey League team: the San Jose Sharks. So it was not without a little nervousness that the two of them touched down in California on Sunday, almost three months after the trade. They don't know what awaits them, how they will be greeted and how they in turn will react. It's always tough to go home. Both were drafted by the Sharks — Cheechoo in 1998 (second round, 29th overall), Michalek in 2003 (first round, sixth overall) — and had their most productive seasons, so far, in San Jose. Cheechoo led the league in goals with 56 in 2005-06, while Michalek had a career

The "W'' Tim Thomas posted last night was worth 2 points in the standings, and maybe 16 ounces of flesh, too. The veteran backstop, playing for the first time in two weeks, was mad and disappointed that he let up Ottawa's tying goal with 19.3 seconds remaining in regulation. "Well, you can blame it on anything,'' said Thomas, "but I don't want to blame it on anything. It was my responsibility to stop it and I didn't.''

Ryder gives Bruins the edge in shootout

The longer they go, well, the longer they have to go. The Bruins, who nightly stretch the game clock beyond even a plastic surgeon's wildest dreams, went to overtime last night, for a fifth time in six games, and ultimately left the Garden with a 4-3 win over the Senators thanks to Michael Ryder's solo strike in the shootout. Ryder's shot, the fourth in the shootout, capped a wild night in which the Bruins fell into an early 2-0 deficit, battled back for a 3-2 lead on the strength of three power-play goals (we're not making that up . . . three!), then watched in near disbelief, if not horror, as the Senators tied it on a sloppy goal (Milan Michalek's second of the night) with 19.1 seconds

It's officially broken record time with the Leafs. The last-place team is now very practiced at repeating the same refrains after each loss. Take Tuesday night's 3-2 loss in Ottawa, for example. Toronto fought desperately to tie the game, outshooting Ottawa 15-4 in the final period, and otherwise did everything within their abilities to stave off yet another setback.

Michalek misses practice
November 7
Ottawa Sun
"
No sign of Milan Michalek today at Senators practice. He will be there tomorrow. While the Senators winger was given the day off to rest some bumps and bruises, that doesn't mean he'll miss tomorrow night's visit by Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils to Scotiabank Place. Coach Cory Clouston said Michalek is "fine" and will play. That's good news for the Senators because the Devils, who face the New York Islanders tonight at home are tough customers, especially on the road. The Devils are a perfect 7-0-0 this season as the visitors and are closing in on the NHL record which is 10 straight victories.
