Mike Ribeiro News & Rumors

It's time Stars' Mike Ribero channeled his inner Mike Modano
"OK, Mike, let's see what you've got. For the better part of their two-decade presence in Dallas, the Stars leaned on the gifted offensive skills of Mike Modano to win games, divisions and a Stanley Cup. It's time the Stars look to their next Mike -- Ribeiro. Modano has been gone for a few years now, replaced at center on the team's top line by Ribeiro. He is as gifted a player with the puck at the end of his stick as the Stars have."
Ribeiro's heroics spike Flames in Dallas
"Since being blanked three weeks ago, the Calgary Flames have scored 20 times. Of those, 16 have now been authored by the team's high-profile quartet — Olli Jokinen (six), Jarome Iginla (five), Michael Cammalleri (three), Alex Tanguay (two). Is it any wonder that coach Brent Sutter, in the middle of a third-period power play, called a timeout to give those four forwards — and defender Mark Giordano — a breather? In order to keep them on the ice for the full two minutes? "They are our top five guys," Sutter said after the 3-2 overtime loss to the Dallas Stars in National Hockey League action Thursday at American Airlines Center. "We do lean heavily on those guys offensively.""
Dallas Stars Benn, Ribeiro likely out until after All-Star Weekend
"Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn, the team's scoring leader with 42 points, underwent an appendectomy on Sunday afternoon, the Stars reported on their website. Benn will be out approximately 10 days to two weeks. He was resting comfortably and is expected to make a full recovery. Benn, 22, was selected to play in the NHL All-Star Game for the first time, which will be in Ottawa on Jan. 29. His participation in All-Star Weekend appears doubtful, though a final determination has not been made."
With Ribeiro sidelined, Wandell has chance to shine
"Tom Wandell doesn't know how long this golden opportunity will last, but he's going to embrace it while it's there. Wandell, a healthy scratch five times early in the season, was moved into the second-line center spot Tuesday to fill in for injured Mike Ribeiro, who missed the game at Anaheim and will also be out for Thursday's game at Los Angeles with a knee injury. "It's a great chance, a great chance," Wandell said. "I've been working hard for this and I'm trying to do everything I can, so this is important. It's my shot." Wandell, who will turn 25 on Jan. 29, was a skilled player growing up in Sweden, and that's why the Stars drafted him. But he has rarely been given the chance to use"
Mike Ribeiro is earning more and more respect with each passing season
"If you ever thought Mike Ribeiro was soft, it's time to change your mind. If you ever thought Mike Ribeiro was a hot dog, it's time to change your mind. If you ever thought Mike Ribeiro was a diving, cheap, trash talking, floater (OK, that was if you hated him back in his Montreal days), then it's high time you change your mind. Mike Ribeiro on Thursday added to a legacy with the Stars that is looking better and better as the years go by. Not only did the 31-year-old center score two goals in a huge 4-1 win over the Nashville Predators, he took a puck in the mouth, lost a tooth and still came back to play."
Ribeiro hit in face with hard, high shot, returns to game with broken tooth
"Mike Ribeiro was just hit in the face by a high, hard shot from Trevor Daley. Ribeiro was in front of the net on the power play, and the puck appeared to go under his visor and hit his mouth or nose. He dropped his gloves and held his face and looked to be in pain. He was helped from the ice to the locker room before the end of the second period. He broke a tooth, but not his jaw and returned to the game."
Ryder back to Ribeiro line for tomorrow?
"That appears to be the plan for the Stars. While coach Glen Gulutzan had success moving Adam Burish up to the Mike Ribeiro line in the third period Tuesday in a 2-1 shootout win over Phoenix, it appears Michael Ryder will move back to his normal spot beside Ribeiro Thursday when the Stars play host to the Los Angeles Kings. ``I think we're going to go back with Rydes,'' Gulutzan said after practice Wednesday. ``I did it for 10-12 minutes in the third and it worked. But Phoenix plays such a methodical defensive game and we just thought we needed a spark. Bur can do that for us, and that helped us in the end."
Dallas Stars' Ribeiro is fine with his new role
"Back in the day, the Dallas Stars might have mastered the dynamic of the second line as well as any team in the league. Taking a former 50-goal-scorer with plenty of mileage left on the tires (Joe Nieuwendyk), they found the perfect balance with a hungry young winger (Jamie Langenbrunner) and a gritty, smart veteran (Dave Reid). The key to it all might have been the humility of Nieuwendyk to accept the secondary role after having a strong run as a No. 1 center in Calgary. Fast forward a decade later, and the Stars might be duplicating the feat. While it is a stretch to say Mike Ribeiro has accomplished what Nieuwendyk had at the time, he definitely was the Stars' No. 1 center in the past"

Leafs eyeing Stars' centre
"With the Leafs averaging just 2.26 goals for per game, shut out four times the past 11 games and getting precious little scoring from centres not named Mikhail, there is public interest in any proven pivot passing through town. Monday night, that's Brad Richards of the Dallas Star's who is in the final season of a shrinking $7.8 million US deal. There's also Mike Ribeiro, who has two more full years with a $5-million cap hit. General manager Brian Burke is not responding to rumours that his club and the New York Rangers are among those first in line if Dallas GM Joe Nieuwendyk decides to make a move with Richards."
Dallas Stars' Ribeiro still scoreless
"That annoying zero in the goal column is getting heavier and heavier for Mike Ribeiro. "It was OK at the start, and it didn't bother me, but now it's a slump," Ribeiro said. "It's very frustrating, because you know that one or two goals could change these games." The irony for Ribeiro is that despite the fact he has yet to score a goal in 15 games, he ranks fifth in the NHL in assists with 14. That seems a little hollow to him right now, as he has scored 16 or more goals for six straight seasons and had a career high 27 in 2007-08. "You know, if it was one or two and we were winning games, or if I just hadn't missed on some great chances in games we lost, then maybe it wouldn't be so bad,""
Stars' Ribeiro faces public intoxication charges
"Dallas Stars center Mike Ribeiro practiced with the team Monday after his arrest on a public intoxication charge late Sunday at a Plano restaurant. The 30-year-old said the incident was personal and he wanted to keep it that way."It wasn't a big thing," Ribeiro said. "I wish there were cameras there and they could have seen what happened.... I just want to put that behind us today."Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk said the team is taking the arrest seriously but plans to handle the matter internally."Once we get to hear from Mike and follow up with security, we'll get to the bottom of exactly what went on," he said. "Then we'll have a better sense of where we'll go."Police said Ribeiro"
Mike Ribeiro back to practice after arrest
"Dallas Stars center Mike Ribeiro was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication in Plano, Texas. Ribeiro was released at approximately 5:45 a.m. ET Monday. He participated in the Stars' practice Monday in Frisco, Texas. Ribeiro, 30, and three others were arrested at RA Sushi Bar Restaurant located at 7501 Lone Star Dr."

Ribeiro's shootout success is a good sign for Dallas Stars
"Mike Ribeiro's immense skills are rarely more on display than during a shootout. That's why it was so strange last season to see Ribeiro tone down the showmanship and go conservative in the NHL tiebreaker. It was probably one of the reasons Ribeiro scored just once in 12 tries and the Stars went 7-10 in the shootout. "I did feel I went too over the top with some moves, so I tried to be more careful," Ribeiro said. "There's still some now that I probably won't ever try again." But coach Marc Crawford said he will fuel Ribeiro's creativity as much as he can. "I don't care what he does, just so long as he scores," Crawford said."
New attitude puts Dallas Stars' Mike Ribeiro in new role
"Six months ago, the last thing you might have expected to see was Mike Ribeiro wearing the captain's "C" in a Stars uniform.Ribeiro struggled in his relationship with a new coaching staff last season and was even suspended one game for being late to a team meeting. He was seen as a player who might have an attitude problem. So it was something of a surprise Saturday night when his teammates voted him to wear the "C" in a preseason game against the St. Louis Blues. With veteran leaders Brenden Morrow, Brad Richards, Stephane Robidas and Steve Ott getting the night off, the coaching staff asked the players to vote on who should wear the "C," a symbol of leadership in NHL history. The players"
GM: No plans to trade Mike Ribeiro
"Dallas Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk ended months of speculation, telling center Mike Ribeiro that the plan is for him to stay with the team. Ribeiro, whose production dropped last season after having led the Stars in scoring in both 2007-08 and 2008-09, had been a fixture of the NHL trade rumor mill this offseason. "I reassured him that I have no intentions of moving him," Nieuwendyk said. "I think he was worried about it. There was speculation out there that he was going to be moved any day."
Talk of Ribeiro trades
"In talking to people today, the Stars are indeed trying to move Mike Ribeiro. They believe that if the Stars want to improve the team, they need to open up space in the budget (Ribeiro makes $5 million a year for the next three years) to acquire a defenseman, and they believe the Stars have replacements at center with Jamie Benn and Tom Wandell. So the shopping is being done. I'm not sure what the market is for Ribeiro right now. Ideally, the Stars would probably just take a draft pick or prospects and then choose how they want to use the $5 million a year on a defenseman. However, they might have to take a defenseman back if that's what the trade partner wants. I'm not sure the Stars are"
High stick weighed heavily on Higgins' mind
"Christopher Higgins knew as soon as he caught Mike Ribeiro with a high stick to the throat, the Dallas Stars centre was injured. It wasn't until the next day, though, that Higgins realized how serious the situation truly became. "Tough to hurt a friend like that," he said of his former Montreal Canadiens teammate. Higgins and the Rangers were playing host to the Stars in early January when the incident took place. Higgins was chasing Brad Richards into the defensive zone, and with one hand on his stick accidentally stabbed Ribeiro in the neck. Ribeiro was on the ice for a few minutes in obvious pain, but made his way to the dressing room on his feet, albeit with some help. Ranger fans"
Mike Ribeiro would like to return Tuesday from 'freaky' injury
"Mike Ribeiro doesn't like to sit out.Not even during a game.Ribeiro, who is known on the Stars for his long shifts, has been itching to get back into the lineup after suffering a severe throat injury Jan. 6 in New York. While the urgency of an emergency tracheotomy and an extended stay in New York caused Ribeiro to take pause, the desire to get back on the ice quickly took over.Ribeiro has played 76 or more games in each of the past five seasons, including all 82 games last season, so he's not used to this downtime thing."You hate that you cannot help the team win," Ribeiro said of missing 15 games so far. "Usually, with injuries, I like to play even if I'm hurt. If I can skate, I like to"

Mike Ribeiro targets Feb. 9 for return from throat injury
"Give Mike Ribeiro a lot of credit. He wants back on the ice, and he pretty much wants back on as quickly as possible. After getting a stick jammed in his throat in New York on Jan. 6 and having to undergo an emergency tracheotomy, Ribeiro says he feels a lot better. He ran through drills with the Stars at the morning skate Wednesday and stayed out long afterward to mess around with goalie Marty Turco. He was not really supposed to be out there. He was only supposed to take a twirl or two and then head back in. But Ribeiro wants back, and said he would like to join the team on a three-game road trip that starts Feb. 9 in Chicago."

Ribeiro's injury frees up minutes for others
"Brian Sutherby has wanted more of a chance to make a mark on the Stars. So has Jeff Woywitka. Toby Petersen could use more minutes. Same with Mike Modano. A long-term throat injury to Mike Ribeiro is going to force the Stars to look at their forward depth. A short-term undisclosed injury to Nicklas Grossman is going to force some changes on defense. And that should be good news to the bottom of the Stars' lineup. It's a mystery why Sutherby hasn't played more, but the puck is on his stick now. He should get regular shifts for a series of games with Ribeiro out four to six weeks, and he can then prove he deserves a spot in the lineup. Woywitka has been pretty solid in recent games."
Loss of Ribeiro means more time for Dallas Stars' Modano, Wandell
"The adversity continues to pile up for the Stars. Coming off three consecutive losses, Dallas has lost center Mike Ribeiro for 4-6 weeks with a throat injury. Ribeiro received an accidental high stick Wednesday from New York Rangers forward Christopher Higgins in a 5-2 loss at Madison Square Garden and stayed over in New York for a procedure and observation. He had a contusion on his throat and underwent a tracheotomy to reduce swelling and allow him to breathe. But as hard as it is to lose the man who has led the team in scoring the last two seasons with 78 and 83 points, the Stars must find a way to soldier on or risk falling even further out of the playoff picture in the tough Western"
Ribeiro out 4-6 weeks with throat injury
"Mike Ribeiro was ready to get on a plane and travel from New York to Dallas last night after getting hit in the throat with a high stick from Christopher Higgins. It's a good thing he didn't. After doctors at the arena recommended Ribeiro not fly because of possible swelling, Ribeiro went to the hospital for observation and ended up having a procedure to fix a crack in his trachea — a procedure that included a tracheotomy. He will stay in New York for a couple of days and will be out of the lineup 4-6 weeks. His wife Tamara has flown up to be with him, and Stars associate athletic trainer Craig Lowry also stayed with Ribeiro."
Ribeiro struck in the throat with stick, in hospital for observation
"Mike Ribeiro was sent to the hospital to have his throat looked at after he was high-sticked in the game against the Rangers. Ribeiro will stay overnight for observation, simply because doctors did not want him flying with what could be a dangerous injury. If there was swelling on the flight, for instance, how would they treat it?"
Stars get creative in 3-2 shootout loss to Kings
"After coming up with a franchise-record 11-round shootout win Friday against the San Jose Sharks, the Stars were back to finding new and heartbreaking ways to lose a shootout Saturday. Dallas made the referees go to the rule book against the Los Angeles Kings to resolve that Mike Ribeiro's bang-bang shootout goal that could have kept the shootout alive had to be disqualified because of Rule No. 25.2: "No goal can be scored on a rebound of any kind (an exception being the puck off the goal post or crossbar, then the goalkeeper and then directly into the goal.)" Kings goalie Jonathan Quick poke-checked a puck off of Ribeiro's stick. The puck went almost immediately off of Ribeiro's skate"
Stars fans should be patient regarding player movement
"There has been much discussion in blogs and chats and tweets and message boards and Facebook walls about how the Stars should go about making trades right now to fix all of their problems. And some of you have come to me with these questions. And to you, I say...patience, my children, patience. In a perfect world, the Stars would have already plugged their holes and put together a flawless and injury-free lineup that would roll to the Stanley Cup. In a perfect world, Les Jackson's move toward youth would have opened up a large amount of cap space, and the normally free-spending Stars would have signed Jay Bouwmeester to a free agent contract in the summer. In a perfect world, Sean Avery"
Stars take down Red Wings, 3-1, in Detroit
"The Stars have seen the kind of team they can be. Now, the question is whether they can control when they are that team and when they aren't. Dallas took a convincing 3-1 win over Detroit on Wednesday night to become the first team in nine games to win in regulation at Joe Louis Arena. Add that to the 3-2 shootout win in San Jose last week and an earlier 4-3 win in Chicago, and the Stars have three victories in places where home teams are 23-3-4 this season. "It's who we want to be and who we think we are, and now we just have to try to show we can be that team every night," forward Steve Ott said. "That's the challenge." The Stars can get up for a challenge. Coming off a disappointing"
