Miguel Cabrera News & Rumors

Avila: Miguel Cabrera has lost 20-25 pounds
"Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila today talked to ESPN's "Baseball Tonight" about consistency, pitching, consistent pitching and the expectations of this year's team. He did not talk about third baseman Miguel Cabrera losing weight -- at least not during the phone interview with host Karl Ravech. But Ravech said and tweeted afterward that Avila told him Cabrera has lost 20-25 pounds this off-season. Avila has been working out with Cabrera and infield prospect Nick Castellanos in Florida, Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said at the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association's Tiger Day on Tuesday."
Miguel Cabrera loses 20-plus pounds for 3B prep, Alex Avila says
"Miguel Cabrera doesn't just want to play third base. It's become a consuming desire to be the best he can possibly be at his old, but new position. "Since Prince Fielder signed," said Alex Avila, the Tigers' catcher who works out with Cabrera in Florida, "he's thrown himself into being a third baseman. It's all he's thinking about." Avila spoke about Cabrera's conditioning program on Friday with ESPN, but also over the phone with The Detroit News. Avila said Cabrera has lost 20-plus pounds with the intention of losing "at least 15 more." "You know, you can make up your mind that you're going to be able to do something," Avila said, "but in this situation, Miguel has thrown himself into"
Tigers talking up Miguel Cabrera -- at third base
"The Hockeytown Café audience loudly chuckled at such an obvious declaration. General manager Dave Dombrowski assessed the Tigers' third-base situation by saying Brandon Inge would be a better defensive player but -- BREAKING NEWS ALERT! -- Miguel Cabrera would be a better offensive player than Inge. "I don't mean to be flippant," Dombrowski quickly interjected."
Tigers GM: Prince Fielder deal mirrored Miguel Cabrera trade
"Signing Prince Fielder continues to remind Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski of trading for Miguel Cabrera. In December 2007, the Tigers traded five players -- including star prospects Cameron Maybin and Andrew Miller -- to the Florida Marlins for Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis. And the deal, Dombrowski said, materialized with owner Mike Ilitch much like Fielder's signing. "I had brought to his attention that he was a good player out there, a key guy that could be available," Dombrowski told CJCL-AM (590) in Toronto on Tuesday. "But not really with the intent that I thought we'd even trade for him. Because at that point the dollars were very large to extend him ... we had thought.""
Miguel Cabrera good enough to make risky move work
"The great debate has commenced, and will continue every single moment of every single day through spring training, then every single Tigers game thereafter. Can he or can't he? Will he or won't he? Should he or shouldn't he? My quick answer (since you asked): Miguel Cabrera can play adequate third base to make room for Prince Fielder, but Plans B, C, and D should be in place. Cabrera won't be a great fielder, duh, but no team would turn down the chance to land a great Fielder. The best thing that came out of the Tigers' stunning signing this week is confirmation they're serious about playing big-boy baseball, literally, figuratively, financially and calorically. Owner Mike Ilitch plans to"
Doubters abound on Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera's move to third base
"Miguel Cabrera said he was moving back to third base to make room on the Tigers' infield for free-agent signee Prince Fielder at first base. In order to play third effectively, Cabrera must lose weight, former major league infielder Harold Reynolds said Wednesday. "He's got a lot of work to do if you ask me, starting with his weight," said Reynolds, an analyst with MLB Network. "The size he's at right now at first base, he's going to have to lose a lot of weight to be a little more nimble."
With Prince Fielder on board, Tigers lineup options could be hard but unlimited
"Jim Leyland needs to sharpen his pencil and get more notepaper. The Tigers manager likes to jot down potential lineups during the off-season. On Tuesday, Prince Fielder agreed to join Leyland's lineup at first base. Miguel Cabrera said he's moving to third. So Leyland can start afresh on formulating his various lineup combinations for this season. It appears the Tigers won't recruit a full-time designated hitter this year to replace the injured Victor Martinez."
Tigers' Brennan Boesch healthy, could be Cabrera's protection
"Perhaps the hitter to replace Victor Martinez already is here. Perhaps he's Brennan Boesch -- a healthy and confident Boesch. "I feel 100%," he said Thursday. Boesch didn't play after August last season because he needed thumb surgery. "The surgery couldn't have gone better," he said, "and I'm just excited to play again.'"
Detroit Tigers' Miguel Cabrera pleads no contest to drunken driving, will not get jail time
"Last season, Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera won his first batting championship, finished fifth in the MVP voting and helped his team win its first division title in 24 years. He did all that while legal troubles — charges of DUI and resisting an officer — simmered in Ft. Pierce, Fla. Cabrera, according to his attorney, did not want this case to interfere with the Tigers season that begins next month."
Jim Leyland might bat Miguel Cabrera third in Tigers' lineup
"Since Miguel Cabrera arrived in Detroit before the 2008 season, he's hit mostly cleanup. In the past four years, he batted third in only 32 regular-season games. Tigers manager Jim Leyland acknowledged Wednesday that might change in 2012. "I'm thinking about it," he told reporters on Day 3 of the winter meetings. "That will be one of those lineups that I make up all winter long, and have in the three spot and have him in the four spot." The obvious advantage to Cabrera hitting third is that he'll always bat in the first inning, giving the Tigers a great opportunity to take the early lead. With the Tigers' best speed threats — Austin Jackson (if he keeps the leadoff job) and Brennan Boesch"
Justin Verlander, Miguel Cabrera most valuable Tigers
"The list at the end of season isn't entirely different than it was at the All-Star break. The Most Valuable Tiger remained the Most Valuable Tiger — Justin Verlander. The runner-up remained the runner-up — Miguel Cabrera. But Jhonny Peralta moved down from No. 3 to No. 6 while three others moved up in the second half. And two others who were on the Top 10 list at the break, Austin Jackson and Al Alburquerque, were relegated to the Top 20, which is better than the Top 25."
Miggy ties LCS hit streak mark to open career
"The end result may not have gone the Tigers' way, but throughout the American League Championship Series, first baseman Miguel Cabrera once again showed why he's one of baseball's most feared hitters. After a somewhat quiet AL Division Series, Cabrera erupted to hit .400 in the ALCS, capping it with two home runs in Saturday night's 15-5 Game 6 loss to the Rangers. Cabrera's achievements in Detroit's season-ending game put him in the record books. His first-inning homer off Rangers starter Derek Holland tied the all-time record for an LCS hitting streak to open a career. That blast marked the slugger's 13th straight LCS game with a hit, dating to the 2003 National League Championship"
Miguel Cabrera reverses Rangers' fortunes
"Rangers manager Ron Washington insists he's tried his best to avoid Miguel Cabrera in the middle of the Tigers lineup. He even ordered Cabrera to be intentionally walked with one out in the eighth and the bases empty in Game 4 on Wednesday. Still, Cabrera has found a way to make his presence felt. And in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Thursday, a fortunate bounce off Cabrera's bat was paramount in the series going back to Texas. Cabrera's double in the sixth, his third in as many games, scored Ryan Raburn with the go-ahead run. The Tigers went on to score three more for a 6-2 lead and held on for a 7-5 victory."
Tigers manager Jim Leyland: Sending Miguel Cabrera home 'was the right call'
"In the first three games of the AL Championship Series, the Tigers missed many opportunities on offense. In Wednesday night's Game 4, they had far fewer, with just five hits through eight innings. So with some of their batters slumping, the Tigers made a pair of gambles — and came up empty on both. Those led to a 7-3, 11-inning loss, giving the Rangers a 3-1 lead in the series. With one out in the eighth inning, Rangers manager Ron Washington chose to walk Miguel Cabrera, but Victor Martinez singled and Cabrera advanced to third with one out. The next batter, Delmon Young, hit a fly ball to right, and third base coach Gene Lamont sent Cabrera home to score on the sacrifice fly. Rangers"
Blasts by Martinez, Peralta and Cabrera power Tigers right back into ALCS
"The Tigers were running out of swings and chances, running low on time. Someone had to do something, preferably with a big bat in his hands. The someones arrived in time and on cue, and did what they do. Victor Martinez and Miguel Cabrera felt it — the aches, the pressure — and then they unloaded. Once the Tigers got started, they kept it up, hammering three home runs and beating the Rangers 5-2 Tuesday night to slice their series deficit to 2-1. This is where any comeback must begin — in the clutch, in the heart of the lineup. When the wounded keep dropping, more is expected (required) of the stars. Pitcher Doug Fister was tremendous again, keeping it tight as if the Tigers were waiting"
Jim Leyland finally does what he hates to do: Put Miguel Cabrera in No. 3 hole
"Making a change he never did for a regular-season American League game, Tigers manager Jim Leyland on Saturday moved Miguel Cabrera from cleanup to the No. 3 spot to replace injured Delmon Young. Victor Martinez moved from fifth to cleanup, and Magglio Ordoñez from sixth to fifth. Leyland said he didn't move Ordoñez back into the No. 3 spot because he liked to have him protect Martinez. Leyland said he "thought all night long" on Friday about how to revamp the lineup without Young. "I made up two or three different lineups," he said. "(I thought) this is one time I might have to slip Cabrera in the three-hole.""
After Miguel Cabrera's steal, he speaks with Jeter
"In the top of the eighth inning during Game 2 of the first-round playoff series between the Tigers and Yankees, Miguel Cabrera stole second base. Seconds after he got there safely, Derek Jeter walked over to chat. It was Cabrera's third stolen base this season, so it wouldn't have surprised anyone if Jeter was at second to joke with the big slugger about his unexpected steal. But Jeter, who collected his 3,000th hit this summer, was there instead to talk about hitting. And who could blame him? All Cabrera did was smack a two-run, first-inning home run to help Detroit seize early momentum Sunday at Yankee Stadium. He followed that with a crucial RBI in the sixth when he singled in Austin"
Tigers' Miguel Cabrera is lost man in AL MVP race, but not in ALDS vs. Yankees
"Miguel Cabrera might be the forgotten man in the AL MVP race, if only because of the attention showered on his teammate, Justin Verlander, and on the Yankee candidates. But as he proved with Sunday's three-hit, three-RBI effort, few have the capabilities of the AL batting champion. The Yankees decided to pitch to him Sunday and they paid for it. "The best hitter in the league," Reggie Jackson said of Cabrera. "Maybe the best in baseball." Cabrera accomplished what Robinson Cano did a night prior - flashing a quick and powerful bat to break open the game. Only a hitter as talented as Cabrera could have turned Freddy Garcia's down-and-away pitch in the first inning into a home run."
Miguel Cabrera and Max Scherzer bring Tigers roaring back
"Big bats show up in big games. Miguel Cabrera showed up on Sunday. Helping to even the division series against the Yankees at one victory each, Cabrera knocked in three runs with a home run and single in the Tigers' 5-3 victory at Yankee Stadium. He also had another single and even a stolen base in the game that might now swing the edge back to Tigers — what with Justin Verlander starting Game 3 Monday night at Comerica Park. He'll be starting against Yankees ace CC Sabathia — whom he faced for 1 1/2 innings before Game 1 was suspended Friday night."
Miguel Cabrera's success a combination of memory, ability
"The topic was hitting, and Miguel Cabrera -- who hits as well as anybody in the world -- didn't even wait to let me finish the question. He opened his eyes wide and he blurted out: Hitters think too much. I'm not the only one he cuts off. When Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon talks to him about that night's opposing pitcher, Cabrera often interrupts him: "That's enough." Then he stands up and walks out. Cabrera even cuts off machines. When McClendon shows him video of pitchers, Cabrera watches a few pitches and leaves."
Miguel Cabrera has made hitting look easy during classic season for Detroit
"The best hitter in baseball spent part of Thursday afternoon lounging on the leather couch in the visitor's clubhouse at Yankee Stadium. While his teammates changed around him, Miguel Cabrera barely moved a muscle. He continued to watch highlights of Wednesday's games in a black tank top and designer jeans. He saw no reason for urgency. Cabrera does things his own way — which is just fine for the Detroit Tigers. "He's a star," Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Thursday afternoon. "He's a superstar and putting up superstar numbers. It's pretty much that simple.""
Uh-oh, Justin Verlander: Miguel Cabrera an MVP candidate, too
"When debating the merits of Justin Verlander's candidacy as American League MVP, you must first ask this: Is Verlander his team's MVP? A scorching September has Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera on the verge of winning the AL's batting championship, which — if he was overlooked before — puts him squarely in the MVP discussion. And that, combined with a crazy-deep candidate pool and the fact Detroit eventually ran away with the Central Division, could ultimately derail Verlander's chances."
With three more hits, Tigers' Miguel Cabrera nears batting title
"Miguel Cabrera sure didn't look or sound like a guy worried about winning his first American League batting title this week. Soft-spoken and all smiles, the league-leading Tigers slugger, boasting a .343 average after a 3-for-5 performance Monday, tried to downplay the potential milestone any way he could. As reporters approached him in the clubhouse before Monday's game against the Indians, Cabrera finished signing an autograph, then juggled three baseballs before an attempt to embarrass teammate Ramon Santiago. "Santiago stole a bible from the hotel!" yelled Cabrera, explaining a trip to the crowd gathered. "That's a bad man." Once the laughing stopped and questions about Cabrera's"
Miguel Cabrera feels a bit woozy in Tigers' win
"He got dizzy. Others noticed it in the dugout — so as a precaution, Miguel Cabrera came out of Sunday's 10-6 victory over the Orioles after seven innings. "I didn't want to take any chances," manager Jim Leyland said. "He was a little woozy, but he's fine." Even a hangnail for Cabrera can be major news for the Tigers, however — until it's found out not to be majors news. After all, he's reached base safely in 49 of his last 50 games — and with two more hits, including his 29th home run, he took over the American League lead in hitting with a .341 average. So how is he feeling? "Good," Cabrera said at his locker after the game, going about his business as usual. "Just lightheadness," was"
Leyland: Don't read too much into Miguel Cabrera's 3B practice
"Tigers manager Jim Leyland said don't read a lot into seeing Miguel Cabrera working out at third base, but admitted if the Tigers made the World Series, "and that's if," he said, Cabrera would have to see time at third base and Victor Martinez at first in order to keep both in the lineup in the National League park."
Looking ahead, Tigers' Miguel Cabrera takes grounders at third base
"Miguel Cabrera wasn't in the starting lineup for Wednesday night's game against the Royals. He's starting something else. And maybe somewhere else, instead of first base, that is. Reporting for early work despite a scheduled game off, Cabrera took grounders at third as the Tigers began, in manager Jim Leyland's words, "to leave no stone unturned." "It felt good," Cabrera said. "That's my natural position. You have to be ready for everything." There's only one reason for Cabrera to be taking grounders at third. It's not preparation for the division series. It's also not for the American League Championship Series if the Tigers get that far."
Miguel Cabrera's two-run homer part of Tigers' five-run sixth inning in comeback vs. Orioles
"The Detroit Tigers have had a difficult time cashing in on scoring opportunities in recent days. They had no such trouble Saturday night. At least not during the sixth inning. The Tigers scored five runs on six consecutive two-out hits in the sixth inning Saturday night to rally for a 6-5 win against the Baltimore Orioles. The Tigers have won by one run in each of their past eight victories, which is a franchise record, according to STATS LLC. The 1944 Tigers had a streak of seven such victories during July of that season. "We play hard," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "I'll say that. We play nine innings. That's been the theme ever since I've been here. I've really tried to emphasize"
Hearing in Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera DUI case delayed
"It's not likely that Miguel Cabrera's legal cases in Florida will be over before the Tigers finish the regular season Sept. 28. A court hearing scheduled for today in Ft. Pierce, Fla., has been delayed until Sept. 15 because depositions that were anticipated had not been taken yet, according to Gayle Braun, assistant state attorney for St. Lucie County. Cabrera, the Tigers' All-Star first baseman, was arrested in February for suspicion of driving under the influence and resisting an officer without violence in Ft. Pierce. His attorney, Michael Kessler, received permission last month to take sworn statements from witnesses who reported seeing Cabrera before his arrest along a rural stretch"
Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander show support for manager's contract extension
"Players very rarely interrupt the media session Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland holds three hours or so before each game. But there was first baseman Miguel Cabrera, wearing a huge smile Tuesday afternoon while poking his head into the visiting manager's office at Progressive Field. "Congratulations," Cabrera said, before playfully flipping the light on and off while saying, "Contract, no contract. Contract, no contract. Contract, no contract." Then Cabrera left. "Well," Leyland joked. "At least one of them's happy." Cabrera was not the only Tigers player who was happy when the team announced Monday that Leyland had earned a one-year extension to his contract that will keep him with the"
How Tigers would look without Miguel Cabrera
"Miguel Cabrera's oblique injury will be evaluated today, Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said Wednesday. Cabrera felt something amiss in his right side on a check swing in Tuesday night's All-Star Game. American League manager Ron Washington said the All-Star medical staff told him Cabrera had suffered "a slight strain of the right oblique." The Tigers reconvene tonight for a workout at Comerica Park, then resume play Friday at home against Chicago. If the Tigers' medical staff determines that Cabrera must miss one or more games, what would the team look like without him? • Victor Martinez, who has batted fifth this season as the primary designated hitter, looks like by far the"
Cabrera expected to play in Tigers' game vs. Sox
"Jim Leyland's leisurely break from the grind of the regular season was interrupted Tuesday night when his best hitter left the All-Star game with an injury. On Thursday, the Detroit manager was optimistic that slugger Miguel Cabrera would be fine. The first baseman is expected to play Friday night when the Tigers return from the break with a home game against the White Sox. "I don't have any reason to believe different." Leyland said. Cabrera is hitting .311 with 18 home runs and 59 RBIs this season. He left the All-Star game Tuesday night after hurting an oblique muscle in his side while swinging. "That sends a red flag up, even when you're home relaxing," Leyland said. The Tigers held a"
Fox's Joe Buck flubs Miguel Cabrera's intro
"Oops. The All-Star Experience didn't get off to a great start for the Tigers, as Joe Buck -- doing Tuesday night's player intros for Fox's broadcast and the stadium -- kind of mispronounced Miguel Cabrera's name. He pronounced it "from the Seattle Mariners, Felix Hernandez." Cabrera grinned and looked quizzically back and forth, maybe to see if he was in the wrong place in line, but, no, Jhonny Peralta, Justin Verlander and Jose Valverde were next to him."
Miguel Cabrera suffers oblique strain in All-Star Game
"The problem that drove Miguel Cabrera from Tuesday night's All-Star Game involves a part of the body that sometimes can keep hitters from playing for weeks: The oblique muscle. "The trainer came and told me that Cabrera said he felt something in his side," American League manager Ron Washington said. "The trainer said it's just a slight strain of the right oblique." The Tigers and Cabrera must hope it is indeed slight and that Cabrera's initial analysis – he said he felt "fine" – holds true. Washington said he didn't get a chance to talk to Cabrera after he felt the discomfort on a checked-swing in the sixth inning. As of late Tuesday night, there's no way to tell if Cabrera will be able"
Florida judge holds hearing in Miguel Cabrera's DUI case
"An attorney representing Miguel Cabrera is concerned the Detroit Tigers slugger will be unable to play in Canada if he is convicted of driving under the influence. Cabrera, 28, was arrested Feb. 16 on a rural highway in central Florida and is charged with driving under the influence and two counts of resisting an officer without violence. He refused a breath test to determine his blood-alcohol content when he was arrested. Defense attorney Michael Kessler received permission Friday to subpoena and take sworn statements from witnesses who reported seeing the first baseman before he was arrested. Under Florida law, depositions are not allowed in misdemeanor cases without a judge's approval,"
Jose Valverde makes Miguel Cabrera's home run stand up
"As Jose Valverde finished off the Tigers' 5-4 win over the Angels on Wednesday, Ron Washington's words hung in the air. Washington, the Texas manager, explained earlier this week why he selected the Tigers' closer for this year's AL All-Star team. "I chose Valverde simply because I wanted his experience at the end of the ballgame," said Washington, who will manage the AL team. "He certainly knows how to get three outs." No loss is tougher to come back from than the one where a team blows a ninth-inning lead. After Miguel Cabrera's seventh-inning, two-run homer put the Tigers ahead, Valverde retired all three Angels he faced Wednesday -- the ball never left the infield -- for his 21st save"
Miguel Cabrera not asked to participate in home run derby
"Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera confirmed today that he won't be a participant in next Monday night's home run derby at the All-Star Game. Cabrera said that doesn't bother him. "I've been it in twice," he said. "I'm good with it." It was suggested to him that he could hit a homer in the All-Star Game itself. That would give him a home run in both the World Series and the All-Star game."
Alex Avila voted to All-Star team; Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander, Jose Valverde also tapped
"Tigers catcher Alex Avila wasn't sure what to think when manager Jim Leyland approached him in the clubhouse this morning. Leyland was holding closer and resident wild man Jose Valverde by the hand. Leyland reached for Avila's hand. "I felt like a little kid," Avila said. "I thought I was in trouble." Avila reluctantly offered his hand and the three walked down a hallway to Leyland's office, where team president Dave Dombrowski waited with good news. Fans made up about a 400,000 vote deficit and voted Avila a starter for the All-Star Game on July 12 in Phoenix. He's the first Tiger to be voted by fans since 2007 and will be joined by three teammates: pitcher Justin Verlander, first"
Miguel Cabrera sparks 8th-inning rally
"The Tigers got the better of the Diamondbacks in two key situations with the bases loaded Sunday at Comerica Park. The Tigers scored seven runs in the eighth inning for an 8-3 win over Arizona and their first interleague series victory this season. Tigers starter Brad Penny allowed two runs in the seventh before he was replaced by Al Alburquerque, who walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. Alburquerque got Stephen Drew to strike out on a foul tip to end the inning. With two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth, Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run single to put the Tigers ahead, 3-2. They added five more runs in the inning. Alburquerque notched his fifth win of the season. He"
Cabrera's drunken-driving hearing delayed; evidence released
"A hearing to determine the next step in the Florida drunken-driving case of Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera was postponed Friday morning, according to a St. Lucie County court clerk. Cabrera's lawyer, Michael Kessler, had asked for a delay, the second postponement in the case. Cabrera was not required to attend Friday's hearing and will not be required to attend the rescheduled hearing. Cabrera faces misdemeanor charges of suspicion of driving under the influence and two counts of resisting an officer without violence. Although the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reinstated Cabrera's driver's license late last month, he could lose it again if convicted of a DUI"
Miguel Cabrera's DUI case postponed
"A hearing to determine the next step in the drunken-driving case of Detroit Tigers star Miguel Cabrera was postponed this morning, according to a St. Lucie County (Fla.) court clerk."
Cabrera hits game-winning homer in ninth, makes winner out of Justin Verlander
"Justin Verlander did some amazing work to get out of a jam in the eighth inning. Miguel Cabrera made a winner out of Verlander in the ninth. Cabrera hit a two-out, two-run home run in the ninth inning Saturday night to give the Detroit Tigers a 4-2 victory against the Chicago White Sox. The home run came on a 1-2 count and broke a 2-2 tie that had stood since the fifth inning. "Two-out hits are golden, and when you hit it over the fence they're really golden," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "That was a nice win for us." Verlander got out of a jam in the eighth inning in impressive fashion to set up Cabrera's heroics. The White Sox put runners on the corners and had Carlos Quentin, who"
Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander top White Sox
"As they surge up the American League Central standings, the Tigers will need their stars to carry them. On Saturday, Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera showed why they're the big-money men. Verlander threw eight strong innings and Cabrera broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth inning with a two-run homer to secure a 4-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. Since throwing his second career no-hitter earlier this year, Verlander's starts have become intriguing from the opening pitch. On Saturday, he provided an ace-worthy performance early on, rolling through the first four innings. The hiccup came in the fifth when Verlander took Brent Lillibridge's hit off his knee and made a bad throw to"
Miguel Cabrera's 2-run homer in 9th lifts Justin Verlander and Tigers
"A few weeks ago, after his team had helped him to a no-hitter, Justin Verlander popped for an expensive and lavish dinner in Toronto. Verlander would have been excused Saturday night in Chicago for ordering peanut butter and jelly. And sticking his buddies with the tab. Until, that is, Miguel Cabrera arrived in the ninth inning with a man on third and two outs in a 2-2 ballgame. Cabrera blasted a 374-foot, opposite-field home run into the Tigers bullpen to help the Tigers and Verlander beat the White Sox, 4-2, at U.S. Cellular Field, and tuck away a game Detroit's stumbling hitters had threatened to award to manager Ozzie Guillen's gang. "That's a hard-fought win for us," said Tigers"
Miguel Cabrera's 3-run homer secures Tigers' sweep
"In the third inning Wednesday night, the walks finally worked in Miguel Cabrera's favor. Usually it works against him. Last season, he had more than twice as many intentional walks as any other American League player. This season, he has 12 intentional walks -- more than many AL teams have. With one out in Wednesday's third inning, Minnesota right-hander Scott Baker walked No. 2 hitter Ramon Santiago. With Cabrera on deck, Baker walked No. 3 hitter Brennan Boesch on a full count. The concept of the base on balls hadn't denied Cabrera an RBI opportunity. It had created one. Cabrera swung and missed at a breaking ball. Then Baker threw something harder on 0-1, and Cabrera lined it over the"
Miguel Cabrera gets driver's license back
"Miguel Cabrera's driver's license was reinstated when an administrator with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles ruled Friday that the arresting officer did not have probable cause to believe that Cabrera was driving under the influence of alcohol. The Detroit Tigers slugger's license was initially suspended because he refused to take a breath test Feb. 16 as he was being arrested on a rural highway in Ft. Pierce, Fla. Michael Kessler, a Ft. Pierce attorney representing Cabrera, argued during an administrative hearing Wednesday that Florida law states a driver has to be in control of an operable vehicle to be required to take a breath test. Kessler also argued that"
Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera gets driver's license back
"Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera has his driver's license back, according to the Treasure Coast Palm newspaper in Florida. Cabrera was charged with DUI after an incident on a Florida highway in February, but a hearing last week with the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Department determined there was insufficient evidence to support the claim Cabrera had been driving under the influence."
National writer tells of bond between Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Gonzalez
"This weekend's Tigers-Red Sox series features two of the premiere first basemen in the sport -- Miguel Cabrera and Adrian Gonzalez.

The series also puts a spotlight on incredibly tight bond between the two sluggers.

Foxsports.com baseball writer (and former Freepster) Jon Paul Morosi recently brought to light just how close the two superstars, once prized prospects in the Marlins organization, have become over the years, starting with a story of how when Cabrera was called up from Class A ball in 2003.

At that time, Cabrera, 19, didn't have a place to stay in South Florida. But Gonzalez not only let Cabrera stay at his house, he helped pack up Cabrera's belongings and shipped"

Miguel Cabrera will find out soon about getting driver's license back
"Miguel Cabrera will find out in about a week whether he'll get his driver's license back after his attorney argued today that the Detroit Tigers star wasn't seen driving before he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Cabrera's license was suspended because he refused to take a breath test as he was being arrested the night of Feb. 16 on a rural highway west of Ft. Pierce. Michael Kessler, a Ft. Pierce attorney representing Cabrera, argued during an administrative hearing today that Florida law states a driver has to be in control of an operable vehicle to be required to take a breath test. He noted that though the St. Lucie County Sheriff's deputies who arrested"
Miguel Cabrera playing over injuries
"Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera, who was 0-for-14 before getting an RBI-single Sunday in the eighth inning, is playing at less than 100 percent. "Miggy's fine," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland. "He's the least of my worries. His back was sore and he has a big bruise on his leg. But he plays. That kid, he's a champ. He's like the mailman – rain, sleet or snow and he shows up." Cabrera, the only Tiger to start all 36 games, was in the American League's top 10 in batting average (.320), home runs (seven) and RBIs (24)."
