While the Seattle Seahawks listed both quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and offensive tackle Sean Locklear as limited in practice on their injury report to the league following Wednesday's workout, the two veterans are in far different situations heading into this weekend's game against Detroit. Hasselbeck sat out out much of Wednesday's work after being "a little bit beat up" last week in Dallas, according to coach Jim Mora, but is a safe bet to play Sunday against Detroit. On the flip side, Locklear also was held out of much of Wednesday's drills as he begins attempting a comeback from a severe ankle sprain, but likely will be used Sunday only as the team's emergency third tackle if all goes ..."

When Jim Mora climbed Mount Rainier this summer as though it were a neighborhood knoll, he stood on the rugged peak looking to scale even more mountain. He's got one now. His Seahawks are on a two-game losing streak and in danger of falling three games out of the NFC West lead just four weeks into the season. Seattle plans to be without quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and key blocker Walter Jones again on Sunday - when they play Peyton Manning and the undefeated Colts in Indianapolis. And, oh yeah, Seattle has lost 10 of its last 12 road games. It's the kind of challenge mountaineering legend Ed Viesturs said Mora was looking for back in July, when they stood atop 14,411-foot Rainier with the ..."

Before Sunday's playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Tarvaris Jackson was expected to be the Vikings' top quarterback heading into training camp next season. Now, though, Jackson's status is unclear. The Vikings might have options to find a starting quarterback, but those, too, are unclear. If team owner Zygi Wilf, who invested $60 million in guaranteed contracts this season, is willing to guarantee an additional $30 million or so, the team might be able to pry Matt Cassel away from the New England Patriots. Besides a new contract for Cassel, 26, the price of a trade would be high — perhaps first-round and second-round draft picks. It's unclear whether New England would be willing to ..."

What did Mike Holmgren ever do to deserve this? A 2-10 season that already was down to last-straw status only got more painful Friday, when quarterback Matt Hasselbeck could not practice and was listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the New England Patriots because his troublesome back is bothering him again. But that was only part of the story, as left tackle Walter Jones is listed as questionable after not practicing for the third consecutive day because of a sore knee, and left guard Mike Wahle was placed on injured reserve because he needs arthroscopic surgery to repair a range-of-motion problem in his right shoulder. Oh, and leading tackler Leroy Hill also is questionable ..."

HARD TO KNOW what most troubled Matt Hasselbeck, although his choices were numerous. Part of it was exhaustion; he needed intravenous fluids after the game. Part of it was taking the field twice in the final five minutes with a chance to win the game, going three-and-out on the first chance, and with the second chance, heaving a no-chance interception on the first play that decided the outcome. Part of it was ceding the NFC West title after a four-year run, giving it to the team that just beat them, the Arizona Cardinals (possibly the worst pro franchise over two centuries of American sports). However these factors marbled together in the aftermath of the 26-20 defeat, the Seahawks ..."

Injuries have been a painful part of Matt Hasselbeck's 7½ seasons as the Seahawks quarterback. There was the pulled groin and separated left shoulder in 2001, which interrupted and then prematurely ended his first season with the team after being acquired in a trade with the Green Bay Packers. There were the bruised elbow and bruised thigh that cost him two games in 2004. There was the torn labrum in the 2004 playoff loss to the Packers that eventually needed surgery in 2007. There was the sprained right knee that cost him four starts in 2006. There also have been the injuries he has played with, and through -- a sore throwing arm in 2005, cracked fingers in 2006, bruised ribs in 2006 and ..."

His first pass since Oct. 5 sailed long and out of the end zone. The last of his eight attempts went wide of the intended receiver. But the important factor during the Seahawks' practice Friday was not so much where the passes were landing, but who was launching them. Matt Hasselbeck, the team's bad-backed Pro Bowl quarterback, practiced for the first time since hyperextending his right knee in a Week 5 game against the New York Giants. It was that injury that led to the diagnosis that a bulging disc in his back was causing weakness in his right leg, which is why Hasselbeck has missed the past four games. Make that five, since Hasselbeck did not make the trip Friday to Florida, where the ..."

As Leonard Weaver stood in the locker room, the Seahawks fullback was trying to convince a reporter that his team is capable of turning around a season that has started 2-6. "It's not over for us -- it's not over," Weaver said. "Everything is still possible. We've just got to get all our horses back." Right on cue, the injured duo of quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and wide receiver Deion Branch walked past. "Like those two," Weaver said, smiling. It won't happen this week, when the Seahawks travel to Miami to play the Dolphins on Sunday. But next week? Everyone from Weaver to coach Mike Holmgren to Hasselbeck has interlocked crossed fingers. Hasselbeck has missed the past four games because ..."

Matt Hasselbeck's trip to Southern California didn't go exactly as he had hoped. In his most recent visit to a back specialist, the Seahawks quarterback didn't get the news everyone -- and especially Hasselbeck -- wanted Monday: that he is cleared to practice for the first time since hyperextending his right knee against the New York Giants on Oct. 5. But Hasselbeck didn't get the news that everyone feared, either: that he will need surgery on the bulging disc that is causing weakness in his right leg. "Really, I was looking for him to clear me," Hasselbeck said Tuesday during a radio interview on KIRO-AM. "I thought he would. I was feeling really good. My tests are improving. "He did not. ..."

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck says he will not need surgery on a bulging disc in his back, but he has yet to be cleared to practice or play because of the leg problem stemming from his back issue. "Just got a weakness in my leg," Hasselbeck said. "Because of the disc issue in my back, that nerve is shutting off the muscles that are supposed to work in your leg." Reporters who cover the team have not been allowed to talk with Hasselbeck since he has been sidelined after hyper-extending his right knee in the Seahawks' Week 5 loss to the New York Giants. Hasselbeck made his comments Tuesday morning on a weekly show on KIRO-AM, for which he is compensated. Hasselbeck also said ..."

Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren announced Friday morning what has been apparent all week: Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will not play Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. During his weekly show on KIRO radio, Holmgren said that Hasselbeck still has not been cleared to play as he continues his rehab from a back situation that is causing weakness in his leg. With Hasselbeck out for a third consecutive game, Seneca Wallace will start against the 49ers at Candlestick Park. Wallace started against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday night, but still was bothered by a strained calf and completed 12 of 23 passes for 73 yards. "He could not get into his rhythm," Holmgren said of Wallace this week. ..."

The Seahawks' quarterback situation remained unchanged Wednesday. Which means it's about as stable as the stock market heading into the team's game Sunday night against the Buccaneers. "It's a challenge," coach Mike Holmgren said -- no, sighed. The only thing certain is that Matt Hasselbeck will not play. He continues the rehab program he was given after seeing a specialist in Los Angeles on Monday because of the back/knee situation that prevented him from playing in last week's 27-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers. That leaves Seneca Wallace, who will start if his strained right calf allows him to practice all week and he can show the coaches enough mobility to be able to play his game ..."
