Marty Turco News & Rumors

Lack of job openings puts Marty Turco's future in jeopardy
"Take a look at the remaining free agent goaltenders. You'll notice that Marty Turco(notes) is the most senior netminder available with 538 games played, right after the 224 by fellow unrestricted free-agent John Grahame(notes). Turco was signed by the Chicago Blackhawks a year ago to provide a veteran presence in front of Corey Crawford(notes), after letting Antti Niemi(notes) walk once his arbitration decision was announced. Crawford ended up usurping the No. 1 job from Turco, who played 29 games and finished with an 11-11-3 record, .897 save-percentage and 3.02 goal against average. It's now August 6 and Turco is still without a job. His agent, Kurt Overhardt, told us last week that his"
Free-agent goalies running out of options
"It's a bad time of year to be a goaltender still sitting on the free-agent market. A position that had limited opportunities at the start of the offseason (as we discussed with Phoenix's Mike Smith on Thursday) is now even thinner when it comes to potential job openings, especially after Detroit's signing of Ty Conklin on Wednesday and the Sabres' re-signing of Jhonas Enroth on Thursday. With those two players signed, every team in the NHL now has at least two goalies under contract for the 2011-12 season, and as James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail pointed out, many of them are on one-way deals that all but settles the goaltending spots around the league. Even though all of the spots have"
Marty Turco showing he can hack it on TV
"Veteran goalie Marty Turco doesn't believe his playing days are over. But when they are, TV is an option for the always-approachable and opinionated Turco, who has been an analyst for NHL Network since the conference finals. "I was a little apprehensive at first," Turco said. "I've been asked the last few years with missing the playoffs and such. I just didn't feel ready to even think about post-career. "But this year, [my wife] Kelly and I talked about it. The opportunity to come to this network, knowing the guys and even knowing the host, David Amber, it seemed to make sense. Let's go see what this is all about, see if I'm made for it." It turns out he is. Turco said the hardest part is"
Did Marty Turco bet with a fan during a game?
"Bet you haven't heard about this one. According to ESPN, Chicago Blackhawks backup goalie Marty Turco and a fan had a little bit more than pride riding on Monday's 2-1 overtime win by the Canadiens in Montreal. The two were taking bets on which team would score next during the game. A photo was posted on Twitter showing a patron slipping a piece of paper to Turco as he sat on the Chicago bench. The alleged fan called into a Montreal radio show and took credit for his role in the transaction. "I bet him after the Canadiens scored that Chicago wouldn't score again," the caller said. After Patrick Kane tied the score, that's when Turco allegedly collected his winnings, but not without a"
Canadiens fan defends Hawks' Turco, calls him 'a great guy'
"Robert Walter never imagined causing an international incident. Yet that's what the Canadian businessman feels thrust into the middle of after his harmless $5 bet Tuesday night with Blackhawks goalie Marty Turco during the Hawks-Canadiens game created a stir from Montreal to Madison Street. "I think it has gotten a little out of hand with people saying things online or the radio about me and what happened that just aren't true,'' Walter told the Tribune on the phone Thursday morning. "I feel bad if any of this has reflected poorly on Marty Turco. I didn't want this to portray him in any other way than he was just being a great guy to a fan.'' That's how this all started. Walter, a"
Turco's 'bet' with fan draws interest
"Goaltender Marty Turco hasn't played much for the Blackhawks down the stretch, but that doesn't mean the fun-loving veteran hasn't found ways to enjoy the game. According to a Canadiens season ticket holder, Turco and the fan engaged in a little wagering during the Hawks' 2-1 overtime loss in Montreal on Tuesday night. A fan named "Robert" called into Montreal radio station Team 990 and said he bet Turco $5 that the Hawks wouldn't score after Michael Cammalleri had given the Canadiens a 1-0 lead in the second period. After Patrick Kane tied it a short time later, the fan gave Turco a $5 Canadian bill with the words "Habs Rule" written on it. As the game continued, the bet apparently"
Turco doing best to support Crawford
"Corey Crawford started his 24th consecutive game in goal for the Blackhawks on Tuesday night. With the Hawks fighting for their lives in the Western Conference playoff race, coach Joel Quenneville has stuck with the rookie over Marty Turco. "It's not the time to lobby (for a start)," Turco said before the Hawks' played the Canadiens at the Bell Centre. "It's the time to be a tight team, to be part of the team and to be ready — that's it. I'm pretty sure they know if I played, had a start, I'd bring it. We don't know how it would go but I've been working to play." Turco hasn't played since a relief appearance March 17 against the Stars and hasn't started since Feb. 11 against Dallas."
Hawks backup goalie ready to go
"Marty Turco returned to the end of the bench in his role as backup goaltender Wednesday night when the Blackhawks faced off against the Lightning. The veteran was again at the ready in case coach Joel Quenneville turned to him as he did to start the second period of Tuesday night's game against the Panthers. It was Turco's first action since Feb. 11 and he finished the game strong by turning aside all seven shots in the Hawks' 3-2 defeat. "I just utilize practice as best as possible. It's about working hard trying to stay sharp because you never know," Turco said. "With the position our team is in, if duty calls and calls for a long period of time you can't be like 'I didn't know this can"
More than Dallas reunion on Turco's mind tonight
"Of all the things running through Marty Turco's mind today when he returns to Dallas for the first time after spending nine years as a standout goalie for the Stars, the Western Conference standings outweigh them all. The Stars (66 points) have lost four in a row, including an overtime loss Wednesday to the Phoenix Coyotes. But they're still in third place in the West, eight spots ahead of the Hawks (60 points). ''I'm not going to lose sight of that at this juncture of the year,'' Turco said. ''There will be some emotions at the beginning, but after that, it will be all about getting the win and stopping that puck. ''I'm pretty excited about [the game]. My family is going to come down."
Turco excited about return to Dallas
"Marty Turco has had Friday night's game against the Stars circled on his calendar so long the ink is probably fading. The veteran goaltender will play his first game in Dallas after leaving the Stars following nine seasons with them when the Blackhawks visit American Airlines Center for a key Western Conference showdown. "As soon as I knew I wouldn't be back and since I wasn't retiring, a return to Dallas was something you were wondering what it's going to feel like and … when it would fall," said Turco, who will get the start in goal after watching from the bench the last two games. "When the schedule came out, certainly that was a big one you circle. … It seems like a big buildup,"
Hawks counting on Turco's experience
"With 536 NHL games under his belt, Marty Turco is the definition of an experienced goaltender. In the raging wildfire that is the Western Conference postseason race, the Blackhawks can use all the knowledge they can get as they battle for a spot. "Experience always helps," said Turco, who has started both games of the Hawks' six-game trip. "Those little things you need to battle mentally you probably brush aside a bit knowing what to expect." After watching Corey Crawford become the clear-cut No. 1 goalie for the Stanley Cup champions, Turco now has positioned himself for more starts as coach Joel Quenneville searches for stability at the position. One thing Turco has on his side is his"
Quenneville likes what he saw in Turco's play
"Coach Joel Quenneville won't make his goaltending plans known for the Blackhawks' road trip to Western Canada until today, but he was happy with Marty Turco's play Tuesday against the Blue Jackets. "He was good; he battled," Quenneville said. "We gave up the lead, and he did some good things and kept us right in there." Turco, who was playing for the first time since Jan. 16, surrendered a goal on the first shot he faced in Columbus, but he felt better as the game went on. "I certainly did," Turco said. "The third [period] was a battle for me. I was really tired. I haven't been feeling my best physically. It was kind of a battle, but it was just nice to play, see shots, stay low and track"
Turco gets a little antsy, but he picks up victory
"Marty Turco anticipated some tough moments Sunday against the Nashville Predators. After all, he hasn't played too much for the Blackhawks recently. "I knew tonight was going to be a battle for me, no matter what, with not playing for a while," said Turco, who allowed two power-play goals in the first period. "I just wanted to win so bad. "Sometimes I found myself lunging forward, wanting it, when the whole game is more about sitting back and waiting, trusting myself and my teammates and making saves that come my way and not going after it." Turco made 20 saves — only five in the third period — in his first start since Dec. 30. He got his second win in his last four starts when the Hawks"
Hawks' Turco prevails after long layoff
"It is quite a hostile welcome, facing a power play 16 seconds into your first start in 17 days. Giving up a goal on said power play is not particularly inspiring, either. But Marty Turco endured, eventually making 20 saves and riding the offensive explosion in the third period to a win in his first start for the Blackhawks since Dec. 30. "Tonight, felt like something was testing me, giving up an early goal, having to stay with it," Turco said after the 6-3 victory over the Predators on Sunday. "But I knew tonight was going to be a battle for me no matter what after not playing for a while. Just wanted to win so bad, I found myself lunging forward a bit, wanting it when the whole game is"
Turco needs a little help
"Corey Crawford should be back to full strength after a bout with the flu for the Blackhawks' two-game trip to California. But, as coach Joel Quenneville has said many times before, the Hawks still will need Marty Turco. It's unlikely Crawford will play back-to-back nights against the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings, especially after just getting over the flu. "[Turco is] coming off three pretty solid games for us — two real good games," Quenneville said. Turco's record fell to 9-10-2 after Thursday's loss to the San Jose Sharks. He hasn't made all the stops he should have — such as on Scott Nichol's soft goal Thursday — but he hasn't exactly benefitted from the Hawks' best game,"
'Battler' Turco solid while being peppered by Blues
"After his first win in more than a month on Sunday, Marty Turco said his mind-set was "about being a battler." Turco definitely had to embody that persona Tuesday night against the Blues at the Scottrade Center, where he was under pressure early and often as the Blues put 18 shots on goal in the first period of what became their 3-1 victory. The bombardment didn't stop there, either, as St. Louis ended up sending a total of 43 shots at Turco, and he turned away 40 of them. Apparently those positive defensive trends that the Hawks had demonstrated in their last four victories were left far behind in Chicago. "Marty was great," coach Joel Quenneville said. "[When it was] 1-1 going into the"
Turco to start again tonight for Blackhawks with Crawford ill
"Corey Crawford didn't look or sound too good after practice Monday. "It was a rough Christmas day," the flu-stricken Crawford said. "I'm a little over it now and trying to back into it. [Practice] was pretty tough; timing was off. I'm sure I'll be fine [today]." With Crawford ailing, Marty Turco will get the start tonight against the St. Louis Blues. Even if Crawford was better, it's likely coach Joel Quenne-ville would have taken Turco's strong 26-save win Sunday against the Blue Jackets into consideration. "It was a big win for him and us as well," Quenneville said. Crawford said he became ill Christmas Eve and was sick the entire weekend. "He's remarkably improved from where he was a"
Hawks get spark from Turco, Hossa in 4-1 win over Blue Jackets
"Reporters were gathered around Marian Hossa's dressing-room stall Sunday morning waiting to interview the Blackhawks winger when teammate Tomas Kopecky arrived in the vicinity with young son Jakub in tow. Kopecky suggested a member of the media interview the 6-year-old, a frequent visitor in the room, so a reporter asked the youngster what his old man needed to do better. "Score more goals," Jakub said. Kopecky and several teammates heeded the advice as the Hawks dropped the Blue Jackets 4-1 on Sunday night at the United Center. Kopecky opened the scoring in the first period, Patrick Sharp had two goals and Dave Bolland another as the Hawks won their fourth consecutive game to conclude a"
Message to Turco: We're sorry
"The Blackhawks felt like they owed goalie Marty Turco an apology after what transpired Monday in an ugly 7-5 loss to the Colorado Avalanche. Turco, who made only his second start in the last eight games, lasted just 20 minutes, 40 seconds. Poor defensive play, turnovers and even some bad ice didn't help as he surrendered four goals on 10 shots. A big save would have helped, but so would have better play in front of him. "I feel bad for Marty," defenseman Brian Campbell said. "He's played good, then we get in there and we just give up things. We give up breakaways that he stopped early. There's only so many two-on-ones that he can stop. I feel really bad for him that way. I think every one"
Turco won't be in goal for Blackhawks against Stars
"Marty Turco isn't dying to prove the Stars wrong, so he took the news that he won't play against his old team just fine. "I didn't come to Chicago to beat the Dallas Stars. I came here to win and be part of a winning formula," Turco said when asked about backup goalie Corey Crawford getting the start tonight in the first meeting between Dallas and the man who holds just about every Stars goaltending record. "[Crawford] is playing well.... He's winning when he's in there. What else can you say? I don't have a problem with that." Turco didn't ask to leave the Stars, so he's been trying to move forward and continue his career with the Blackhawks. When Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk made"
Turco OK with Crawford starting
"Marty Turco isn't going to sulk. He knows why Corey Crawford is getting the start in goal Wednesday against the Dallas Stars – the team he backstopped for years -- and he's not. Crawford is on a roll. He is not. "We're going to go with the winning formula," Turco said Tuesday. "Corey has been playing well and deserves to. ... I have zero problems with it." Of course, Turco would love to get a crack against the team he spent the first nine seasons of his career with, but there are three other opportunities later in the season, including two in Dallas, so he's content for the time being. "I have some expectation to play one of those games," Turco said. "If it was an Eastern Conference team"
Crawford gets start vs. Turco's former team
"Marty Turco figures he'll eventually get a chance to face his former team, but it won't be Wednesday night when the Stars are in town to face the Blackhawks. Instead, it will be Corey Crawford getting the start for the Hawks for the fifth time in the last six games. With Crawford seeking his seventh consecutive victory, Turco understands coach Joel Quenneville's decision to stay with the hot hand. "We're going to go with the winning formula," said Turco, who spent nine seasons with the Stars before signing a one-year contract with the Hawks during the offseason. "Corey's playing and deserves to. There's a reason why I came here (and) that's to win. I have zero problems with it. If it was"
Turco vs. Stars no sure thing
"The Dallas Stars come to town Wednesday night, but coach Joel Quenneville hasn't decided whether to give goaltender Marty Turco the nod against his former team. "[Corey Crawford] is on a nice winning roll, but we'll have to give that some consideration," Quenneville said. Crawford has won six consecutive starts while Turco, who signed as a free agent with the Hawks after nine seasons with the Stars, has lost his last three."
Turco returns to net after benching
"It's not in Marty Turco's nature to sulk. The veteran Blackhawks goaltender remained positive despite being relegated to the bench while Corey Crawford has made three consecutive starts — and won all three. "That's definitely who I am — (I think in) positives," Turco said. "The best one is that we're winning. That's all I want — get in there, play and make a difference. Those are the things that make my world go around. All I think about is what I do every day to get better. To feel good, get rest, work hard and stay on top." Turco returned to the net Friday night when the Hawks took on the Canucks at the United Center looking to turn around his fortunes, which included two consecutive"
Turco believes Crawford deserves to keep playing
"Corey Crawford is set for his third consecutive start in net for the Blackhawks, and that's just fine by Marty Turco. Crawford has won his last four starts for the Hawks, including a back-to-back in Southern California to finish the team's recent six-game road trip. He also has surrendered only three goals -- none at even strength -- on 97 shots in the last three games. ''It's always about the next shot. That's how I approach it: keep working hard,'' Crawford said after practice Monday at Johnny's Icehouse West, emphasizing not getting too high or too low as part of his recent success. ''There's not necessarily one moment that [spurs] you on because you've still got to keep working and"
Marty Turco's family circus trip
"Marty Turco has never been part of a journey quite like the Blackhawks' 12-night circus trip to western Canada and California. This has to do with more than the stiff competition on the road. ''This is the longest trip that I've been away from my family,'' the 35-year-old goalie said. Turco and Fernando Pisani, who have families, had to make big adjustments after spending their careers in one city. For Turco -- as the handpicked replacement for Antti Niemi -- there's the additional pressure and high expectations of being the goalie of the defending Stanley Cup champions. His success and his mistakes are magnified. So it was important that his family was settled and happy in Chicago. Turco"
Turco has to short-hand it to Hawks' penalty-killers
"Goalie Marty Turco joked after Saturday's game against the Buffalo Sabres that the reason the Blackhawks have been so good on the penalty kill is because they've had plenty of practice. But Turco also made sure to note that through all that ''practice,'' the Hawks' penalty-killers have been nearly perfect the last four games. The Hawks killed off six penalties and spent 8:33 down a man without allowing a power-play goal. Brent Seabrook (6:13), Duncan Keith (4:54) and Jonathan Toews (4:27) logged the most short-handed minutes. The Hawks held the Sabres scoreless in 11 attempts and more than 20 minutes on the power play over the two games between the teams last week, with Dave Bolland,"
No need to worry about Hawks' goalies
"Flat on his back in front of the goal during a practice break Thursday morning at the United Center, Blackhawks goalie Marty Turco flapped his arms and legs to make a snow angel on the ice. Yep, Turco sure looked worried — worried about showing off his handiwork to teammate Troy Brouwer. The Hawks signed Turco to make a deeper and more lasting kind of impression this season, but also for throwaway moments like these that aren't as meaningless as they appear. For moments of levity and perspective when a struggling team needs them. The day after the defending Stanley Cup champs fell to 1-2-1 while Turco watched youngster Corey Crawford in goal for the second straight game, the 35-year-old"
Sharp scores twice to help Turco to his first Hawks triumph
"The Blackhawks found their championship gear. Looking quite a bit more like the team that skated off with the 2010 Stanley Cup rather than the one that struggled in the first four games of this season, the Hawks clobbered the Blue Jackets 5-2 on Friday night at Nationwide Arena. The Hawks were in control from the outset as 10 players hit the scoresheet, including Patrick Sharp with two goals, Marian Hossa and Tomas Kopecky each with a goal and assist and Viktor Stalberg a score to lift goaltender Marty Turco to his first victory in a Hawks sweater. Despite playing without regulars Patrick Kane (illness), Brian Campbell (knee injury) and Niklas Hjalmarsson (suspension), the Hawks spoiled"
Idle Turco upbeat with Crawford in net
"Marty Turco -- the handpicked replacement for Antti Niemi -- sat and watched from the bench for the second consecutive game on Wednesday. Corey Crawford got the nod from Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville against the Nashville Predators, and made 24 saves in a 3-2 loss. The decision to start Crawford was a case of Quenneville playing the hot hand, which he did at times last season. Crawford survived an early two-goal hole Monday against the Buffalo Sabres for a 4-3 win, the Hawks' first of the season. ''There is an emphasis on winning here, and it's still my most favorite thing about the Blackhawks,'' said Turco, who learned Tuesday that Crawford was starting. ''We've got a ton of games"
Turco shakes off defeat, looks to fix 'little things'
"Only two games are in the books. And, although goalie Marty Turco has been good enough to the put the Blackhawks in position to win, he admitted he's itching to get in the win column. ''Of course,'' Turco said after the Detroit Red Wings handed him his second defeat in as many games on Saturday. ''You go home, lie in bed and think about it. You always replay stuff.'' Turco, though, won't dwell on things too long, even if he took blame for allowing stoppable game-winning goals in the Hawks' first two games. ''The idea is just to get better,'' Turco said. ''I've played long enough and been in this position to put it behind pretty quick. Anytime you let things eat at you, it's going to hurt"
Turco focuses on positives
"Playing in his 10th NHL season, Marty Turco isn't going to let losses in his first two games with the Blackhawks shake his confidence. The 35-year-old has yielded seven goals thus far in a pair of one-goal defeats as the Hawks have earned one point to open defense of their Stanley Cup championship. It's not exactly the start he envisioned after signing with the Hawks as a free agent during the summer to replace Antti Niemi as the No. 1 goaltender. "You go home and lie in bed and think about it and you always replay stuff," said Turco, who has 67 saves and a .896 save percentage. "The idea is just to get better. I've played long enough and been in this position to put it behind you pretty"
Marty Turco has the Hawks' back
"It was only one game, but new Blackhawks starting goalie Marty Turco at least showed he's still capable of making acrobatic saves and keeping his team in a game. ''We're really confident [in him],'' defenseman Duncan Keith said. ''He's done a great job in Dallas for years. We all know what he's capable of. You can see that hunger that he has already to try and win. That's going to make us a better team.'' The Colorado Avalanche is a good team, and it tested Turco and the Hawks' defensemen Thursday night with its youth and speed. But the Detroit Red Wings are much better. So if the defending Stanley Cup champions want to give their fans a real reason to cheer tonight -- after their banner"
The voice of experience
"The Stanley Cup has treated Marty Turco as if he were a corrosive material to be avoided. He continues to pursue it anyway. He's in Chicago now, though not just because the Blackhawks call the trophy their own. He chose the Hawks over other teams because, at 35, he knows what he knows. He knows that the leadership of a 22-year-old kid has made all the difference in the world for the Hawks. He also knows how bizarre that might sound. Shouldn't the roles be reversed? Shouldn't the guy who is 13 years older be the one providing the guiding hand? Even before the 2009-10 regular season had ended, Turco was pondering his exit from Dallas' net. As he looked around the league, he paid close"
Turco on the hot seat
"From his seat on the airplane sitting on a tarmac in Maui on June 9, Marty Turco received the text message: BLACKHAWKS WIN. Turco had watched most of the Stanley Cup-winning Game 6 over the Flyers from the airport bar but had to board before Patrick Kane scored the historic game-winner in overtime. You might say Turco and the Hawks both were in paradise when it happened. "At least I knew who won for the eight hours of the flight,'' Turco recalled Wednesday. It didn't take much longer after that for Turco to start envisioning scenarios in which the Hawks goaltending situation would be up in the air because of salary-cap restrictions. Four quick months later, Antti Niemi is gone after"
Team quick to pick up on Turco's style
"It was thought that it would take some time for the Blackhawks to get accustomed to goaltender Marty Turco's knack for leaving the crease and playing the puck. In Saturday's exhibition win over the Detroit Red Wings, the record-setting crowd caught a glimpse of what is expected to happen this season with Turco in net. Turco sent a long outlet pass to Patrick Kane that led to Duncan Keith's power-play goal in the second period. He also vacated the net on other occasions to play the puck. ''They all want the puck, and they've all seen me play before,'' said Turco, who had 23 saves in his first full game this preseason. ''Them being ready is no surprise. It's just nice to know these guys can"
Turco solid in home debut
"Marty Turco made himself right at home in his new crease at the United Center. The veteran goaltender made 23 saves Saturday night in a 4-2 victory over the Red Wings before a crowd of 20,553, a franchise record for an exhibition game. "Playing here for the first time in a Hawks uniform was pretty cool," said Turco, who spent his first nine NHL seasons with the Stars before signing a one-year, free-agent contract with the Hawks during the offseason. "Stepping into that crease was a good feeling." Turco got offensive support on goals by Ryan Potulny, Duncan Keith, Jack Skille and Marian Hossa as the Hawks improved their exhibition mark to 1-2. Potulny, who inked a one-year contract earlier"
Turco solid in exhibition debut
"Marty Turco had a solid Blackhawks debut, even if it was an exhibition. The veteran netminder played the first half of Wednesday's game and made several tough stops against a veteran-laden Lightning lineup that included snipers Steven Stamkos, Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis. The only puck that got past him was off the stick of Stamkos, who swatted the puck in from behind the net in the first period. The young sniper surprised Turco and napping defenseman Jassen Cullimore, who neither picked up Stamkos nor cleared the puck when given a chance. Turco, who came to the Hawks in the offseason after spending nine seasons with the Stars, made 14 stops but also got some help from the"
Hawks wild about Turco
"Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane broke free in the first scrimmage of training camp and had new starting goalie Marty Turco in his sights. Kane turned to his backhand and beat Turco, drawing plenty of cheers from the United Center crowd Saturday. Turco, though, wasn't about to let it happen again when Kane attempted to wow the crowd with a spin move during a shootout attempt. "I didn't let him finish it," said Turco, who beat Kane with a poke check. ''He's had enough fun in the last 2-- months.'' "I was just trying to give the fans a show, I guess,'' a smiling Kane said. ''I'm sure he wants to give fans a show, too." Turco didn't get a chance to display the puck-moving ability that"
Turco's puck-moving abilities excite Hawks

Chicago Blackhawks betting on turnaround by Marty Turco
"The Stars believe they can make Kari Lehtonen a better goalie. The Chicago Blackhawks believe they can make Marty Turco a better goalie. It's the way of sports, it seems, to always feel you have the answers when someone else doesn't. The Stars in February traded for Lehtonen because they believed Turco had done all he could in Dallas. The Atlanta Thrashers moved Lehtonen for the same reason. On Monday, the Blackhawks released Stanley Cup-winning goalie Antti Niemi because he won a too-expensive arbitration award of $2.75 million. They signed Turco to a one-year deal for $1.3 million because they believe he will be much better on their team. So how does this all work? Well, part of it"
Hawks sign Turco to replace Niemi
"A trip across the ocean with 11 buddies to play golf in St. Andrews, Scotland, figured to be the highlight of Marty Turco's summer. Instead, the veteran goaltender said the thrill of his offseason came Monday when he joined the Blackhawks after signing a one-year, $1.3 million contract to replace Antti Niemi for the Stanley Cup champions. The Hawks let Niemi walk rather than pay him the $2.75 million award handed down by an arbitrator Saturday and immediately inked Turco, who spent the last 10 seasons with the Stars. "The understatement of my summer is how excited I am to be part of this organization," Turco said on a conference call from Scotland. "I've played a long time and seen a lot"
Blackhawks drop Niemi, sign goalie Turco
"The Blackhawks have decided to walk away from the arbitration award for goaltender Antti Niemi, making him an unrestricted free agent, and have signed Dallas Stars veteran Marty Turco to a one-year contract. The Blackhawks "exhausted all options" with Niemi, general manager Stan Bowman said Monday, but given their salary-cap constraints, didn't feel they could take on the $2.75 million deal that Niemi received from an arbitrator. "It's an amazing day for my family and me to become a Blackhawk," Turco said. Terms of Turco's deal aren't yet known, but his agent, Kurt Overhardt, said it is for somewhere between $1 million-$1.5 million. That is significantly lower than what Niemi was awarded"
Chicago has goalie decisions to make, could land Turco
"The Chicago Blackhawks have plenty of factors to assess when it comes to deciding their depth chart in the crease, with their precarious salary cap situation foremost among them. It is one of the more fascinating storylines of the hockey off-season, with a defending Stanley Cup champion potentially willingly cutting ties with the goaltender that helped get them there. A report from a Chicago television station late Sunday had the Blackhawks signing Marty Turco to a one-year contract, but other Blackhawks' beat reporters discounted the report as false. Turco, 34, is an unrestricted free agent after playing in Dallas for over a decade. In 509 regular season games for Dallas, Turco totalled"
Flyers make pitch for goalie Marty Turco
"Another goalie has surfaced as a possible starter for the Flyers. Negotiations with San Jose's Evgeni Nabokov have not been fruitful, so the Flyers have apparently reached out to Dallas' Marty Turco. Turco, a 5-foot-11, 185-pounder who will turn 35 on Aug. 13, told ESPN.com he turned down the Flyers' three-year offer for a little more than $6 million total. Turco was 22-20-11 with a 2.72 goals-against average and .913 save percentage this past season.
