Marques Colston News & Rumors

New Orleans Saints agree to five-year deal with receiver Marques Colston
"The New Orleans Saints agreed to a five-year deal with receiver Marques Colston, a league source confirmed. Terms of the deal are not yet available, but the NFL Network's Jason la Canfora reported the deal is worth a maximum of $40 million, with less than half guaranteed. It's also unclear what Colston's first-year cap figuire will be. The Saints entered the day with around $6 million in cap space and still have a long list of priority free agents they'd like to bring back, including guard Carl Nicks. It's possible they may have to release players to create more space today."
Saints re-sign receiver Colston
"The New Orleans Saints have kept one of their top wide receivers from testing the market. FOXSports.com has learned that wide receiver Marques Colston agreed to a five-year contract extension just hours before he was set to become an unrestricted free agent. Colston has played all six of his NFL seasons with Saints quarterback Drew Brees. Colston has posted 1,000-yard receiving seasons in five of them, including a career-high 1,143-yard campaign in 2011."
Saints, receiver Marques Colston reportedly working 'feverishly' toward contract
"The New Orleans Saints and receiver Marques Colston are working feverishly toward finalizing a new contract before Colston becomes a free agent Tuesday, according to Pro Football Talk, which cited a league source. Colston and guard Carl Nicks are the Saints' two most prominent free agents set to hit the open market at 3 p.m. central time. I have consistently maintained throughout this offseason that I think Colston is the most likely free agent to stay among the Saints' core guys like Nicks, cornerback Tracy Porter and receiver Robert Meachem. I just think it makes so much sense for both sides."
Colston, Saints working hard to finish a deal
"Saints owner Tom Benson and coach Sean Payton went to New York to meet with Commissioner Roger Goodell. They presumably left G.M. Mickey Loomis in New Orleans because he has bigger fish to fry. And one guy that he's trying to get into the pan is receiver Marques Colston. A league source tells PFT the two sides are working feverishly toward finalizing a new contract before Colston becomes a free agent at 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Colston, we're told, badly wants to remain a Saint."
Saints will aim to keep all their top free agents
"First, my glass-is-half-empty view on the New Orleans Saints' offseason: They're facing the scariest free-agent period in franchise history. Although the Saints have thrived despite losing some valuable players in recent years, they've never lost one as important to the team as Drew Brees, Carl Nicks or Marques Colston. These guys are different. They're the elite of the elite, and they can't be easily replaced. Now, my glass-is-half-full prediction: I think the Saints will keep all three of them. It won't be easy. Although it's practically guaranteed that Brees will stay, the Saints might have to use their franchise tag on him. And Nicks and Colston certainly will attract a long line of"
Colston makes early return for Saints tilt against Jaguars
"The Saints will have wide receiver Marques Colston and linebacker Jonathan Vilma on the field when they meet the Jaguars on Sunday. Both players were are listed as active in the report released 90 minutes prior to kickoff. Colston missed the team's last two games with a broken collarbone sustained in the season opener against the Green Bay Packers. He was originally expected to miss four to six weeks with the injury. "I wouldn't anticipate him getting 50 snaps, but he is cleared," Payton told the New Orleans Times-Picayune on Friday. "He is in the plan.""
New Orleans Saints say Marques Colston has been medically cleared
"The New Orleans Saints sent an intriguing one-way signal Wednesday, hinting to reporters who cover the Jacksonville Jaguars that top receiver Marques Colston has been medically cleared and might play this Sunday. Colston, who suffered a broken collarbone while making a diving catch in the closing minute of the Saints' season-opening loss at Green Bay, returned to practice Wednesday on a limited basis, according to Coach Sean Payton's injury report. That Colston was at practice at all signaled a remarkable medical turnaround for the wideout, who was expected to miss at least four weeks. Payton neither elaborated nor was asked about Colston's upcoming status for Sunday's game during his"
Coach Payton says WR Colston will play at Jax
"Setting of something of a puzzle Wednesday, New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton told reporters in Jacksonville wide receiver Marques Colston has been medically cleared and will play against the Jaguars on Sunday, according to published reports. That is a more emphatic statement than Payton offered New Orleans media during his Wednesday press conference. If true, Colston's recovery from a broken collarbone suffered at Green Bay in the 2011 season opener will be nothing short of astounding."
Saints optimistic about healing of Marques Colston's injury
"New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton stuck by a best-case-scenario timetable for the return of Marques Colston, while also offering veiled hints that wide receiver Lance Moore may be available Sunday. The Saints have lost Colston for some time because of a broken collarbone the team's best receiver suffered while making a catch in the final minute of last week's loss at Green Bay. Colston had surgery Friday, the day after the 42-34 loss to the Packers, and Payton said the procedure went well. Given the break was a clean one, surgeons were able to thoroughly repair the clavicle. Consequently, Payton said the four-week timetable he initially provided for Colston's return remains tenable."
Source confirms New Orleans Saints' Marques Colston's broken collarbone
"New Orleans Saints receiver Marques Colston suffered a broken right collarbone in Thursday's 42-34 season-opening loss to the Green Bay Packers, according to a league source. FoxSports.com's Jay Glazer first reported the nature of the injury Friday afternoon after Saints Coach Sean Payton confirmed at his Friday news conference that Colston was injured while not going into any detail on the injury. Colston was favoring a shoulder after making a 23-yard reception that brought the ball to the Packers' 18 with 37 seconds left. "It was the second-to-last play," Payton said. "All of these guys were in here today getting treatment. We had two or three guys with specific injuries." Glazer's"
Saints receiver Marques Colston appeared to injure shoulder
"The New Orleans Saints did not release an injury report after Thursday's game, but receiver Marques Colston appeared to be favoring his shoulder after the team's final drive. It's unknown if the injury was significant or not."
Marques Colston and Tracy Porter return to Saints practice
"The New Orleans Saints were joined at practice Sunday by wide receiver Marques Colston and cornerback Tracy Porter, two key players for the team as they head toward the 2011 season. Porter made his first practice appearance of camp. He has knee surgery following the 2010 season, in which he missed four games. No decision has been made yet on whether he will play in the Saints second preseason game Saturday at Houston, according to Porter, although he felt no pain and the coaches told him he looked smooth in his return."
Jon Stinchcomb returns to practice for New Orleans Saints; Marques Colston still out
"Starting right tackle Jon Stinchcomb returned to practice with the Saints on Thursday after sitting out the previous two workouts to rest his surgically repaired left knee. Saints Coach Sean Payton said Stinchcomb will play Friday night in the exhibition opener against the San Francisco 49ers. But receiver Marques Colston continues to sit out of practice, nursing his right knee that he underwent offseason surgery on. Payton said Colston will not play on Friday. The other players who missed Thursday's workout were: tailback Chris Ivory (foot), cornerback Tracy Porter (knee), defensive end Greg Romeus (knee) linebacker Ezra Butler (hamstring and sports hernia), offensive tackle Alex Barron"
Marques Colston still steering clear of practice
"For the fifth practice in the past six days, the New Orleans Saints gave wide receiver Marques Colston the day off Wednesday, but the veteran said he would be ready to go if New Orleans' exhibition game against the San Francisco 49ers on Friday night in the Superdome were a regular-season contest. "If this were September and we were getting ready for week one, I'd be out here practicing," Colston said. Colston had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee just after the 2010 season, but he appeared fine during the practices the Saints players held at Tulane during the summer lockout, and Colston looked to be ready to go when training camp opened. But his knee developed some irritation and"
Marques Colston says he'd play if it were regular season
"For the fifth practice over the last six days, the New Orleans Saints gave wide receiver Marques Colston the day off from practice Wednesday but the veteran said he would be ready to go if the upcoming game were the regular season. "If this were September and we were getting ready for week one, I'd be out here practicing," Colston said. Colston had a arthroscopic surgery on his right knee just after the 2010 season, but he appeared fine during the practices the Saints players held at Tulane University during the summer lockout, and Colston looked to be ready to go when training camp opened. But his knee developed some irritation and swelling and the decision was made to rest him and, "make"
Saints receiver Marques Colston sidelined again Sunday
"New Orleans Saints receiver Marques Colston was held out of practice for the third straight day Sunday to rest his surgically-repaired right knee. He was out on the field, but he did not participate. Chances are, he will be back on the field Tuesday after the players have Monday off."
New Orleans Saints receiver Marques Colston rests knee again
"New Orleans Saints receiver Marques Colston was held out of practice for the second straight day Saturday to rest his right knee, which was surgically repaired in January. But Colston said he expects to be back on the field Sunday. "We've got a long way to go (before the season starts). It's just being smart," Colston said. "It's been feeling good. It just felt a little irritated, so they sat me down. I was gonna practice today, but they just decided to rest it again. Hopefully I'll be out there tomorrow.""
Marques Colston and Jabari Greer keep pushing each other
"As usual, New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston caught just about every ball thrown in his direction during Sunday's practice -- with the notable exception of one that was tipped up and snatched away by cornerback Jabari Greer. And the rivalry continues. For three years, the daily one-on-one duel between Colston and Greer has stood out as one of the most riveting reasons to watch a New Orleans practice. The only thing missing is the trash talking. As high intensity as both veterans are, they're also two of the most low-key stars in the NFL. Maybe that's why they remain two of the league's most underrated players. Neither one of them has an "in-your-face" personality, and neither"
Saints' Marques Colston, Carl Nicks will be featured on NFL Network's top-100 player countdown Sunday
"New Orleans Saints receiver Marques Colston and guard Carl Nicks both will be featured on Sunday night's edition of the NFL Network's top-100 player countdown. The rankings are based on the votes of current NFL players, and Colston and Nicks will be ranked between 51 and 60. Colston and Nicks are the first two Saints to crack the list, which started at No. 100 last month. Three other Saints will be featured among the top 50, which will be revealed 10 at a time in future weeks. The smart money says those three players will be quarterback Drew Brees, guard Jahri Evans and linebacker Jonathan Vilma, though that has not been released. I'm pleasantly surprised to see Colston so high on this"
New Orleans Saints receivers Marques Colston and Robert Meachem are back at full speed after surgeries
"New Orleans Saints receivers Marques Colston and Robert Meachem underwent significant surgeries after last season, but both are training at full speed and feel they can be even stronger in 2011 than they were at any point last season. Colston had microfracture surgery to repair cartilage around his right kneecap, similar to the procedure he had on his left knee in 2009. That year, Colston was back to 100 percent before training camp. He said he's further ahead of schedule this time. "I'm doing everything now. It's just about getting my conditioning back," said Colston, who has been working out with teammates at Tulane and with local trainer Wyatt Harris at the Sonic Boom speed,"

Sean Payton doesn't expect receiver Marques Colston to be out long
"New Orleans Saints receiver Marques Colston had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Tuesday, but Coach Sean Payton said the team's No. 1 passing target has not been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "I don't want to diminish the fact that he had this scope, but they just cleaned up some loose bodies," Payton explained. "It was one of those decisions we made knowing that it wasn't going to be significant." Colston was not available for comment. It seems very unlikely that Colston, who did not practice Thursday, will be able to bounce back in time to play Sunday. But Payton sounded optimistic that he won't be out long - which means it's possible that Colston"
Saints' Colston still making his noise with a lofty level of play
"The best receiver on the field today at Paul Brown Stadium won't be the one of which you're thinking. He doesn't have a flashy nickname or his own reality TV show. He doesn't have a Facebook page or Twitter account. And he won't choreograph an elaborate dance if he scores a touchdown. Marques Colston will be the best wide receiver on the field today when the Saints visit the Cincinnati Bengals. But he won't be the one Fox cameras focus on, not with flamboyant Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens on the opposite sideline. And that's exactly how Colston would want it. Colston, the Saints' fifth-year wide receiver, avoids the spotlight almost as adeptly as he does NFL cornerbacks. Ochocinco"
After so-so start, Colston clicks into high gear
"The "Quiet Storm" hadn't been exactly silent, but, well, we've come to expect a lot more noise from him. That's not to say Saints receiver Marques Colston had been MIA this season. He's been Drew Brees' favorite target, as forecast, and leads the team with 46 catches and 527 receiving yards, with a pair of touchdowns. But Colston hadn't put together much of a high-impact performance in terms of production until Sunday night against Pittsburgh, when he caught six passes for 75 yards and a touchdown in New Orleans' 20-10 win. Against a rugged and physical defense, he gave better than he took (like the rest of his teammates) and helped his team claim the kind of victory that restated its"
Colston is a go in season's first injury report
"In some ways, the NFL season officially began Monday in that it marked the first day teams began that weekly coaching kabuki that is the injury report. The Saints amended theirs almost as soon as Coach Sean Payton verbally delivered it, changing the status of wide receiver Marques Colston from limited to full. Colston, in a previously undisclosed ailment, was suffering from a bruised kidney. But he appeared fine when running routes during the brief portion of practice open to reporters, and Payton said the team was monitoring the situation and not unduly concerned. Colston himself, speaking later during an open locker room session, dismissed the whole matter and said he would be fine."
Ex-Hofstra Pride wide out Marques Colston on Super stage with New Orleans Saints
"Marques Colston's phone was buzzing during a team meeting in early December. The Saints wide receiver kept receiving text messages and voice mails delivering the same bad news - his alma mater Hofstra University had cut its football program. "It was definitely not the way you want to start your day," Colston recalled Wednesday. "It kind of hit me a little bit later on that I really don't have anything to go back to. I go back and work out with some of the guys during the summer and that is kind of over." If anyone needs any proof that longshots can make it to the Super Bowl, look no further than Colston. Selected in the seventh round of the 2006 NFL Draft as a supplemental compensatory"
Bucs were in it, but then ...
"The Bucs almost went into halftime against New Orleans feeling good against the NFC's best team. Tampa Bay had possession at its 25-yard line trailing 10-7 with 2:09 remaining in the second quarter. But a three-and-out possession, including consecutive incomplete passes, took little time off the clock and gave the Saints' top-ranked offense a golden opportunity. New Orleans not only took a 17-7 lead, but also grabbed momentum heading into halftime. "We've got to be able to buckle down when times are tough, face a little adversity, keep people out of the end zone on defense and not turn the ball over on offense," Bucs cornerback Ronde Barber said. "We're our own Trojan horse. We bring the"
Getting on track is goal for Colston
"It irks Marques Colston that he hasn't been overly productive the past two games. It bothers him that after a scorching start to the season, he has had some uncharacteristic drops and a nearly costly fumble. He tries not to show it, but it annoys him that he's had so many lapses. No one else in the Saints' organization seems to be concerned with recent abnormal play by Colston, though. "I'm not worried about Marques," Saints quarterback Drew Brees said. "Not one bit. Not at all." "Usually, he's a guy that's got real solid hands," Saints Coach Sean Payton said. "He came up big with the catch to keep the drive going on third down (against the Panthers). Like anything else, a position like"
