Mark Sanchez News & Rumors
Mark on target as Tebow struggles
May 25
New York Post
"
Jets fans might want to get down on one knee this morning — not to "Tebow" but to pray their team does not need to use the backup quarterback. Tim Tebow looked terrible in his first Jets practice that was open to the media. Now, it's only May. It's only organized team activities, where teams are still in shorts. But incumbent Mark Sanchez looked way ahead of Tebow at this early juncture. Tebow looked indecisive and unsure of himself. He threw interceptions on consecutive passes at one point. Sanchez, on the other hand, looked crisp and showed a good command of the new Jets offense.
"
Mark Sanchez outplays backup QB Tim Tebow in Jets offseason workout
May 25
Newark Star-Ledger
"
The Jets held their third OTA this morning -- the first open to the media -- meaning this was the first look at the Mark Sanchez-Tim Tebow dynamic on the practice field. Tebow took reps as the No. 2 quarterback behind Mark Sanchez, as the team has made clear his role will be. Some of Tebow's passes came out a bit high. He was picked off on back-to-back passes in 7-on-7 drills, by Bart Scott and new Jets safety Yeremiah Bell. Tebow finished 6-for-8 in the nine snaps he took in 11-on-11 team drills, by an unofficial count. Tebow was also used on special teams, as the personal protector on the punt team.
"
Giants punter knocks Sanchez
May 19
New York Post
"
It is rough when the punter — make that the former punter — is wondering about the development of the quarterback. Steve Weatherford, basking in the afterglow this week as he received his Super Bowl XLVI championship ring, questioned the "maturation'' of Mark Sanchez while speaking on an NFL.com podcast. Weatherford and Sanchez were teammates with the Jets in 2009 and 2010. They reached the AFC championship game both seasons. "I like Mark — I think he's a very talented quarterback. But from my standpoint, I haven't seen a lot of maturation," Weatherford said. "When you're a quarterback and you come in, and you're expected to be the face of the franchise, and you're expected to lead the

Namath: Sanchez better QB for Jets than Tebow
May 16
New York Post
"
Jets legend Joe Namath thinks Mark Sanchez has nothing to worry about with Tim Tebow looking over his shoulder. Namath said if he were Sanchez, he'd be "tickled to death." "Mark knows he's a better quarterback, and bring on the competition." Namath said last night at United Way's annual Gridiron Gala at the Waldorf-Astoria. "Mark is sensational. He's going to be much better." Namath said he's a fan of both quarterbacks, but there is no question in his mind that Sanchez is the better of the two.

Gang Green's all here, with sneak peek at Mark Sanchez-Tim Tebow rivalry
May 11
New York Daily News
columnist Gary Myers
"
Darrelle Revis unloaded Thursday on Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, which is a lot more productive than the Jets unloading on each other during their December meltdown last season. There is never anything wrong with the Jets ripping the Patriots, and it's always fun when Belichick and Brady are the targets, but the Jets are so psychologically fragile — they get that from their starting quarterback — that it's just a matter of time before they are pointing fingers at each other again.

Sparano says NY Jets won't have a problem managing both Tim Tebow and Mark Sanchez
May 4
New York Daily News
"
Four months after Tony Sparano walked into a cauldron of discord and dysfunction, the new Jets' offensive coordinator was filled with more hope and optimism than a Tony Robbins weekend seminar. Sparano praised Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow, refusing to let the potential quarterback controversy deter him from fixing an offense that sputtered for much of last season. He shed little light on Tebow's role in his traditionally conservative scheme, noting that the team's official backup quarterback could play "anywhere from one to 20 snaps." The prevailing thought is that Tebow will see action as a quarterback, full-back and H-back on offense.
"
Sparano 'really impressed' with Jets QB Sanchez
May 4
New York Post
"
Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano spoke with reporters on a conference call Thursday. I did a post on what he said about Tim Tebow, but here are some of the things he said not related to the backup quarterback: On the Jets' offensive weapons: "I'm excited about the possibilities that we have." On Mark Sanchez. He prefaced this by saying he knows you can't just take turnovers out of the equation but some of Sanchez's turnovers last year were not his fault: "If you take the turnovers out, this guy really played better last year. His numbers were better last year than they had been the previous couple of years. You've improvement in a couple of areas, which is what you really want to

Rex Ryan raves about Jets QBs
May 2
ESPN.com
"
Five weeks after the trade that rocked the NFL, Rex Ryan finally got his first look at Tim Tebow on the practice field. The New York Jets' coach said Tebow looks "outstanding" in limited drills. "Same thing with Mark (Sanchez)," Ryan said Tuesday night at a charity event, quickly including his starting quarterback in the conversation. "Both those guys are in phenomenal shape." Phase two of the Jets' offseason program began Monday, allowing coaches to be on the field during player workouts, per the rules of the new collective bargaining agreement. Ryan raved about the team's overall conditioning, claiming he expects an improvement in team speed. Ryan laughed when asked what he's seen from

Tim Tebow makes NFL Network list of Top 100 players of 2012 while Mark Sanchez left off the list
April 30
New York Daily News
"
Tim Tebow hasn't beaten out Mark Sanchez for the Jets starting quarterback job, but according to his peers, he's the better quarterback. The NFL Network recently released a list of the top 100 players of 2012, as voted on by current NFL players. Tebow, who came to the Jets in an offseason trade after leading the Broncos to a surprising playoff victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, was ranked 95th on the list. Sanchez was not ranked at all. "It truly is an honor for me to be on this list, because there are so many great players in the NFL," Tebow said in an NFL Network interview. "And for just a few of them to respect me enough to put me on this list, it really means a lot."
"
Tebow passes Sanchez — on NFL's list
April 29
New York Post
"
Tim Tebow might be the No. 2 quarterback on the Jets' depth chart, but he's the only one considered one of the best players in football by his peers. Tebow was ranked 95th on the NFL Network's list of the Top 100 players in the league as voted on by the players. The Jets' starter, Mark Sanchez, is not on the list, however. "It's a huge honor for me and something I'm very thankful for," Tebow told NFL Network. "Because as a player when you put in all the hard work, you want to be respected by your teammates and your competitors and the people you go against every single week and it truly is an honor for me to be on this list. There are so many great players in the NFL for just a few of them

Jets WR says Tebow throws 'a lot' harder than Sanchez: report
April 26
New York Post
"
The Mark Sanchez-Tim Tebow comparisons continued Tuesday night, but this one came from a Jets receiver who recently caught passes from the team's quarterbacks. Second-year receiver Jeremy Kerley did notice a contrast in one area. "Different than Mark, different than Mark," Kerley told NJ.com about Tebow, who was often criticized for his accuracy with the Broncos last year. "(Tebow's) ball comes out a little bit stronger, but he's accurate, he's more accurate than what I thought he was going to be. But he's a good dude, he has a great personality, he'll bring a lot of personality to the team." Kerley was asked how significant the difference in speed was. "A lot, a lot more velocity," Kerley

Mark Sanchez says he's 'thrilled to work with' Tim Tebow
April 20
NFL.com
"
New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez did his best Thursday night to turn the Great New York Quarterback Controversy into a love fest, according to the New York Post. Appearing in White Plains, N.Y., where he signed autographs and did a Q&A for fans, Sanchez spoke warmly of the time he's spent with Tim Tebow the past few days since the Jets began their offseason workouts. "From a competitor standpoint, he's great," Sanchez said. "He's what you want in an offseason program — working hard, competing with the guy in the weight room. This is a big, strong guy, so it's good for me. That's been one of my goals this offseason — putting on a little more muscle mass. I've taken a beating during

Sanchez & Holmes are working it out
April 12
New York Post
"
The Jets are in Disney World, not to celebrate a Super Bowl championship, but in hopes of taking the first steps toward one. Quarterback Mark Sanchez, wide receiver Santonio Holmes and other teammates are working out together in Orlando and spending time at the theme park, according to an NJ.com report. Florida is where Holmes spends his offseason with trainer Tom Shaw and he extended an invite to some of his teammates. "I know for a fact Santonio Holmes and Mark Sanchez are close," Shaw told the web site. That could not have been further from the truth when the two ended last season with a tense relationship amid a fractured locker room. But the two have taken strides this offseason to

Champ Bailey: Tim Tebow will challenge Mark Sanchez for starting position
April 4
111112222233
"
Champ Bailey had an up-close-and-personal view of Tim Tebow in Denver, watching the young QB rise from curiosity to starter. And this year, Denver's All-Pro corner expects to watch something else from afar. Jets brass may claim that Mark Sanchez is the starter and Tebow the Wildcat complement, but Bailey says Sanchez's job is hardly that secure. Bailey wouldn't be surprised if there's a Gang Green quarterback battle in 2012. "(Tebow) is gonna challenge him, absolutely," Bailey said on Tuesday, at the NFL's new Nike uniforms launch in Brooklyn. "Sanchez can't be too comfortable in his seat."
"
Roethlisberger: Tebow trade will be 'tough' for Jets' Sanchez
April 4
New York Post
"
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said he doesn't think it will take long for Jets fans to start chanting Tim Tebow's name. "First preseason game," Roethlisberger said. And the two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback said that is going to be hard on current Jets starter Mark Sanchez, no matter what Sanchez says. "I feel bad for him," Roethlisberger told The Post Tuesday at the unveiling of the new Nike NFL uniforms in Brooklyn. "It's going to be tough." Roethlisberger said that a bunch of the players gathered for yesterday's event were discussing the Jets' trade for Tebow and how difficult it will be for Sanchez.

Bailey: Tebow's arrival will warm Sanchez's seat
April 3
NFL.com
"
Champ Bailey sees the writing on the wall now that former teammate Tim Tebow is with the New York Jets. He just wonders if Mark Sanchez can see it, too. "Oh, he's going to challenge him, absolutely," Bailey said at the Nike uniform launch in Brooklyn on Tuesday, according to ESPN.com. "Sanchez can't feel too comfortable in his seat. If he keeps playing well, he doesn't have to worry about it. But if he doesn't play well, we all know what's going to happen next." Bailey, an 11-time Pro Bowl cornerback, was in the eye of the Tebowmania storm for two seasons in Denver. Though Tebow is expected to be the Jets' No. 2 quarterback and Wildcat specialist, Bailey has a feeling Sanchez's days as a

Woody Johnson believes Santonio Holmes and Mark Sanchez can play together
April 3
New York Daily News
"
He was labeled a "cancer" by his teammates, he feuded with quarterback Mark Sanchez, and he was unceremoniously benched for the final few minutes of the Jets' season finale. These were the lowlights of Santonio Holmes' turbulent 2011 season. They made him the face of the Jets' disappointing campaign, the lingering memory of another unfulfilled Rex Ryan Super Bowl promise. Yet, Jets owner Woody Johnson remembers something else. Before Holmes was the embodiment of everything wrong with the team, he was a "dynamic" partner for Sanchez, Johnson said on Monday. And Johnson predicts that Holmes will rekindle that relationship in 2012.
"
Carroll not sure how Sanchez will cope
March 29
New York Post
"
Pete Carroll and Mark Sanchez have known each other since the Jets quarterback was in high school. And Carroll, the former Jets head coach and now the head coach of the Seahawks, got to know Sanchez fairly well during the three seasons Sanchez played for him at USC. Carroll said yesterday he doesn't know how easy it will be for Sanchez to contend with the tidal wave that is Tim Tebow and Tebowmania. "It's not easy," Carroll told reporters at the NFL owners' meetings in Palm Beach, Fla. "It's tough. It's a challenging situation. He can't brush it off. ... It's a challenging predicament. The other guy is going to play some so that means [Sanchez] is not.
"
Rex, Woody: Sanchez our guy, but Tebow deal not his business
March 28
New York Post
"
The Jets took turns both praising and disrespecting Mark Sanchez yesterday. Speaking at the NFL's annual meetings, Rex Ryan and owner Woody Johnson couldn't shower enough plaudits on their embattled starting quarterback amid the continuing fallout from the high-risk acquisition of backup Tim Tebow last week. But at the same time Ryan and Johnson were toasting what they see as Sanchez's long future with Gang Green — at one point, Ryan proclaimed the Jets "are hitching our wagon to Mark" — they defended not even giving Sanchez a heads-up phone call before the bombshell deal to bring in a high-profile challenger for his job.
"
Tim Tebow is too powerful a force and he will eventually supplant Mark Sanchez as starting QB
March 27
New York Daily News
columnist Filip Bondy
"
The presence of three dozen television cameras and 250 media members spoke considerably louder on Monday than Tim Tebow, whose reedy voice doesn't always carry as far as his wobbly passes. This was a big media event at the Jets' practice facility in Florham Park, testimony to what is surely Tebow's manifest destiny when it comes to the Jets' starting quarterback job. It is highly improbable that Mark Sanchez, notable in recent days mostly for his absence, can hold off the Tebow tidal wave over the long haul. Sanchez, we know by now, has up-and-down seasons. In 2011, in early October, he threw for 119 and 166 yards in successive, ugly losses against the Ravens and Pats. In late November
"
Tebow 'excited' to work with Jets starting QB Sanchez
March 27
New York Post
"
It was a different kind of faith that brought Tim Tebow to the Jets. The newly acquired quarterback met the media as a member of the Jets for the first time Monday at the team's fieldhouse in Florham Park, and he credited coach Rex Ryan's confidence in him as one of the main reasons he favored the Jets over the Jaguars. Tebow said that ultimately the Broncos had the power where to trade him, but he was consulted about his next destination after Denver acquired Peyton Manning. "First and foremost it was my relationship with the coaches," said Tebow, who was not accompanied by members of Jets brass, who were in Palm Springs, Fla., for the NFL owners meetings.
"
Sanchez says he doesn't feel heat from Tebow arrival
March 27
New York Post
"
While nearly everyone who follows, cares about or roots for the Jets found a television yesterday at noon to watch Tim Tebow's introductory press conference, the man most affected by Tebow's arrival stayed away. Mark Sanchez, the Jets incumbent quarterback, threw passes on a field in Southern California while his new backup fielded questions and smiled for the cameras. The unprecedented press conference for a backup kicked off a quarterback controversy like we've never seen before. Unless you ask Sanchez or Tebow, of course.
"
As Tebow enters spotlight, expect diminished Sanchez role
March 26
New York Post
"
As they prepared to introduce Tim Tebow at a press conference in New Jersey this afternoon, the Jets seemingly put Mark Sanchez on notice yesterday. Speaking at the annual NFL meetings, Rex Ryan stressed that Sanchez remains the team's starting quarterback in light of last week's blockbuster acquisition of Tebow, but said he "is going to play the best people" if Sanchez struggles this season. Ryan also said the Jets have much bigger plans for Tebow than just playing a few snaps a game out of the Wildcat formation, indicating strongly that Tebow will play other positions even though he has voiced his opposition to that since coming to the NFL.
"
Tebow's charisma will make life even more difficult for Jets QB Sanchez
March 26
New York Post
columnist Steve Serby
"
The dog-and-pony show introducing Tim Tebow to New York today will make the pomp and circumstance of the day the Yankees introduced Alex Rodriguez seem like a tempest in a Tebow. Unlike the Yankees, who won their 27th world championship in 2009, the Jets, who won their first — and last — championship in 1969, will use the event to crown themselves champions of the offseason. But it's meaningless because while Tebow may come armed with Broadway Joe Namath's star power, he sure doesn't have his arm. It took A-Rod six years before he helped deliver that elusive championship.

Tim Tebow thinks he can beat out Mark Sanchez for starting QB job: sources
March 23
New York Daily News
columnist Gary Myers
"
Tim Tebow's love of New York has nothing to do with pastrami and rye, or Times Square, or even Madison Ave.: The real reason Tebow loves New York is because he feels he can beat out Mark Sanchez and become the Jets' starting quarterback. Timsanity — and an explosive quarterback controversy — starts now. A major factor in Tebow's push to come to New York over Jacksonville, his hometown, is that he sees a clear path to resuming his career as a starter, sources tell the Daily News.

Burden on Sanchez to make two QBs work
March 23
New York Post
columnist Mike Vaccaro
"
Having two quarterbacks can work. Don Shula's career might have looked a whole lot different if he hadn't had Earl Morrall to take over for Johnny Unitas in 1968 and Bob Griese in 1972, if he didn't have Don Strock to caddy for David Woodley in 1982. One of the most glamorous teams in NFL history were the L.A. Rams of the early-'50s, a team that won one title and played for two others by splitting the position of quarterback in two and giving half the snaps to Bob Waterfield and the other half to Norman Van Brocklin. And nobody has a deeper understanding of the usefulness of quarterbacking depth than the Giants. Jeff Hostetler happened to be a terrific emergency solution in 1990 when Phil

N.Y. Jets get Tim Tebow to shake things up; Mark Sanchez on notice
March 22
Denver Post
"
Tim Tebow has always said he sees himself as an NFL quarterback, but the New York Jets may see things a little differently. The Broncos sent Tebow and a seventh-round draft pick to the Jets on Wednesday for fourth- and sixth-round picks in the April 26-28 draft. The underperforming Jets, who didn't make the playoffs last season, have had their quarterback, Mark Sanchez, their locker room and their bombastic coach, Rex Ryan, come under heavy criticism since their 8-8 finish. The acquisition of Tebow is seen around the league as part of the Jets' attempt to shake things up.

Tim Tebow, Mark Sanchez quarterback combo could work for NY Jets, says former NFL general manager
March 22
New York Daily News
columnist Gary Myers
"
The Jets are going to require two playbooks next season. One package will be for Mark Sanchez, the conventional quarterback. It will include simple things such as passes over 10 yards and plays that require reading the defense. The other package, which will be for Tim Tebow, the novelty quarterback, will be filled with gimmick plays out of the Wildcat and simple throws. It's been quite an offseason for the Jets. They were turned down by Peyton Manning, one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. They were embraced by Tebow, one of the worst.

NY Jets shocking trade for quarterback Tim Tebow has New York sports fans split
March 22
New York Daily News
"
Even if it did not make sense to them, Jets fans — and football fans — are passionate about Gang Green's trade for controversial quarterback Tim Tebow. "He can't throw the ball farther than I can, and I am not a professional quarterback," said Jets fan Chris Kearney as he stood outside Madison Square Garden waiting for the Rangers-Red Wings game. "And that is a problem." Most Jets fans focused on Tebow's less-than-stellar stats. He completed only 126 of 271 passes for 1,729 yards and 12 touchdowns last season.

Plan to use in Wildcat, vow no QB controversy with Tebow signing
March 22
New York Post
"
The Jets made one of the most dramatic trades in their history yesterday — twice. Gang Green brought Tebow-mania to Broadway last night, acquiring polarizing quarterback Tim Tebow from the Broncos for a fourth- and sixth-round pick in next month's draft. The Jets also received the Broncos' seventh-round pick. The trade was finalized just before 9 p.m. after a surreal day that included a ton of twists and turns, including the trade being announced, then put on hold. In the end, the Jets outbid the Jaguars to land Tebow, who will serve as the team's backup quarterback and be utilized in the Wildcat formation.

Tebow signing shows Jets aren't fully committed to QB Sanchez
March 22
New York Post
columnist Steve Serby
"
So at the end of a long day's journey into night, the Jets had to have God's Quarterback. At virtually any cost. Most ominously, at the potential ruination of Mark Sanchez. So at the end of this long day's journey into night, after the attendance-deprived Jaguars tried to swoop in at the 11th hour, the Jets still had a chance to drop out of the Tim Tebow Sweepstakes when the Broncos insisted they were owed $5 million in salary advanced to Tebow through 2014. "We had a disagreement on how the advance was going to be handled," general manager Mike Tannenbaum said.

Tannenbaum puts it all on the line
March 22
New York Post

"
The funny part is this: From the moment the word started circulating, around social media and around the world, that the Jets had actually dealt for Tim Tebow, this was the reaction of both sides of the great divide, those who endorsed the deal and those who thought it more absurd than "John Carter": This had better work out well. Or else someone's going to get fired. That someone, of course, was Mike Tannenbaum, the Jets' Teflon-coated general manager, who somehow was allowed to both hire and fire Eric Mangini and never once have his own job status questioned, who somehow survived last year's calamitous 8-8 mess with only a minimum of blood spatter since Rex Ryan and Santonio Holmes and

Several players and members of the organization were critical of Sanchez's production, leadership and the team's handling of its quarterback in a Daily News report in January, but Sanchez didn't respond. Less than a week after the Jets signed Sanchez to a three-year extension after it became apparent that coveted free-agent Peyton Manning wasn't interested, the fourth-year signal-caller touched on a variety of topics.

Sanchez rips anonymous snipers, says his relationship with Holmes is better
March 16
New York Post

The mending of the relationship between Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and wide receiver Santonio Holmes began a few weeks ago in Orlando. Sanchez visited Holmes, who lives there, and the two hashed out the issues between them over dinner. "When I finally got a chance to see him for a couple of days it was the same old guy from our first year together, that won a bunch of games for us in the closing seconds of games," Sanchez said. "I know it can work between us. It's not a question of if. It's a matter of when, and that's now. I'm thrilled about that."

One of the first questions people asked after the Jets gave quarterback Mark Sanchez a contract extension was: How will wide receiver Santonio Holmes react to this? Holmes took to Twitter yesterday to let everyone know. Holmes, who is in Africa doing charity work, wished Sanchez well. "Very happy for Mark & the entire team with his extension," Holmes said in the tweet. "Looking forward to getting back to work when I get back this amazing trip."

NY Jets' contract and faith in Mark Sanchez give kid time to grow into role, as Eli Manning did with NY Giants

In the end, the Jets chose not to look desperate this time, whether you believe that Mark Sanchez is ultimately a championship quarterback for them or not. It is as much the headline on their interest in Peyton Manning as much as anything, whether Manning was ever going to choose them or not. Maybe it would have been different if they had gotten some indication from Manning that he wanted to come play in MetLife Stadium, play in the same stadium as his brother while really playing in New York, finish his career with the Jets. Apparently he did not. So, let's be real, the Jets got out while the getting was good. You still don't know how good Sanchez can be over the long haul. Neither do the

If Mark Sanchez wants Super Bowl glory with NY Jets, he must follow Eli Manning's blueprint

Now that Mark Sanchez no longer has to worry about Peyton Manning taking his job, he needs to remain focused on the Manning family and figure out how he can Be Like Eli. Eli Manning set the blueprint for how to succeed as a New York quarterback, winning one Super Bowl before he was elite, then winning another five weeks ago after finally taking his game to elite status during his eighth season. Both championships followed years of severe doubt as to whether he would be any good and justify all the Giants gave up to get him. Sanchez is in the same spot Manning was after his third season — a struggling young quarterback — even though he's had more postseason success. The Jets think he can

Dear Mark, Never in doubt, huh? Once the franchise quarterback of the Jets, always the franchise quarterback of the Jets, right? Watch your back, kid. If there is any lesson for you to learn since the 2011 season ended in disgrace, it is this: You know that next step you were supposed to take in your third year as starter? If you don't take it in 2012, there will be someone else not named Peyton Manning who will seduce your desperate bosses, and you will be the most expensive backup quarterback in the NFL. I would strongly urge you to grow up, and put up, before you are asked to shut up. And now!

Sanchez gets extra time, Jets get extra cap space
March 11

A surprise contract extension through 2016 wasn't just a Peyton Manning makeup gift from the Jets to Mark Sanchez. It turns out the deal, announced late Friday night, also was a way for Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum to create $6.4 million in additional room the team badly needs under the projected salary cap with free agency set to open Tuesday. Tannenbaum denied the move was about the cap during a conference call late Friday, but the numbers would seem to indicate the savings are more than just a happy accident. According to a league source who saw the contract details, first reported by profootballtalk.com, the Jets converted $8.5 million of Sanchez's scheduled $11.75 million base

Mark Sanchez's extension with Jets locks him in as starter through 2013
March 10
Newark Star-Ledger
"
The basics of Mark Sanchez's extension with the Jets are out, and they point to one very significant fact: The Jets quarterback is locked in as the starter through 2013. The Jets and the 25-year-old quarterback reached agreement Friday evening on a three-year extension worth $40.5 million, according to a person with knowledge of terms of the deal. That person requested anonymity because the team has not announced the value of his contract. Sanchez is now slated to earn $58.25 million over the next five years, with $10 million in potential escalators pushing the maximum value over that time span to $68.25 million (and the maximum value of the three new years to $50.5 million). Amid all the hoopla surrounding the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, the Jets left little doubt that they believe Mark Sanchez is their quarterback of the future. Gang Green signed Sanchez to a three-year extension for $40.5 million on Friday night, and he now has five years remaining on his deal for a total of $58.25 million. Sanchez, who had two years remaining on his rookie deal, will earn $20.5 million fully guaranteed over the next two seasons, according to a source. The Jets are also expected to free up some salary-cap space in 2012. Sanchez was going to count $14.25 million against the cap before signing the extension. General manager Mike Tannenbaum admitted that the Jets were

Jets give Mark Sanchez five-year extension after Peyton flirtation falls short

No one has to worry about Mark Sanchez's feelings anymore. Once they missed out on free agent Peyton Manning, the Jets finalized a contract extension with their own quarterback. The team agreed in principle with Sanchez on a three-year, $40.5 million extension on top of the two years he had remaining on his old deal, locking him up through 2016. The terms of his new contract are five years, $58.25 million with $20.5 million guaranteed over the first two years, according to a source. There are an additional $10 million in escalators that could bring the total deal to $68.25 million. Sanchez becomes the sixth- or seventh-highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, depending on what scale you use.

LaDainian Tomlinson is an outsider on the Jets these days, but that doesn't mean he lacks an insider's perspective as to what the Jets players are thinking. And as the team is said to be interested in Peyton Manning — with the Daily News reporting late Wednesday that the Jets have reached out — Tomlinson said that move would mean the end of Mark Sanchez in New Jersey. Tomlinson told NFL Network on Wednesday that if the Jets acquire Manning, Sanchez would ask for his release. "In my opinion, I don't know if he'd handle it well," Tomlinson said. "I think he'd probably go in and maybe ask to be released. Rightfully so, he would be a little mad. That's all a part of it. At the same time, if he

The Jets wasted no time jumping into the Peyton Manning fray Wednesday, placing a call to his representatives shortly after the star quarterback became a free agent, according to a source. The Colts released Manning Wednesday afternoon, and he appeared on the league waiver wire shortly after 4 p.m. The Jets reached out to gauge Manning's interest a short time later. The Dolphins, Seahawks, Cardinals, Chiefs, Broncos and Redskins also are expected to pursue Manning as well. The situation is a delicate one for Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum, who has a law degree, but a psychology degree might serve him better.

Jets should bring in Peyton Manning, replace Mark Sanchez

Is New York big enough for Eli and Peyton? You bet it is. The Giants have Eli, and now the Jets must go get Peyton. Rex Ryan has backed off making any Super Bowl predictions for the 2012 season, and that's a good thing, because his current team isn't Super Bowl-caliber. That changes if the Jets land Peyton. The Colts have scheduled a news conference for Wednesday to announce that they will release Manning rather than pay his $28 million option bonus. Manning, who played 14 years in Indianapolis, missed all of last season due to neck surgery.

It's been four years since Chad Pennington wore a Jets uniform, but he is helping out his former team. Current Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez recently met with Pennington in Florida for tutoring sessions, a source confirmed. Pennington played for new Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano with the Dolphins and gave Sanchez a tutorial on Sparano's system and terminology. According to ESPN.com, Pennington brought an old Dolphins playbook with him, and the two quarterbacks had classroom-type sessions on more than one occasion. Rex: Sanchez, Holmes to work on rebuilding chemistry

The rebuilding of the relationship between Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and wide receiver Santonio Holmes may begin with a weekend retreat. Jets coach Rex Ryan told The Post last night he has spoken with both players and Holmes told him he'd like to get away for a weekend with Sanchez as the two try to fix their chemistry.
