Marcus Thornton News & Rumors

Kings' Thornton possible for Tuesday against Mavericks
"Marcus Thornton missed his fourth consecutive game Sunday evening with a bruised left calf, though Kings coach Keith Smart suggested the guard could return Tuesday against the Mavericks in Dallas. Smart said he didn't want to use Thornton, the team's leading scorer, Sunday against the Houston Rockets after a week's layoff and risk a setback. "We'll give him another day," Smart said. "We have a day in Dallas to kind of start working, another opportunity for him to have another day, do some three-on-three, four-on-four, and then hit the floor playing from there.""
Kings' Thornton looks to do more than just score
"Marcus Thornton has stolen from a teammate. It happened Feb. 6 in New Orleans, and center DeMarcus Cousins was the victim. Late in the Kings' comeback victory over the Hornets, Cousins needed one more rebound for back-to-back 20-point, 20-rebound games. In the final 1:06, Thornton came up with two rebounds – and both appeared to be Cousins' to grab. Thornton recalled the situation with a laugh after practice Wednesday."
Thornton leads Kings over Blazers
"Marcus Thornton joked Wednesday afternoon that the padding he's wearing to protect his injured left thigh made the Louisiana native feel like New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees. Then in the fourth quarter Thursday night, Thornton took a hit like a football player when Portland forward Gerald Wallace landed on Wallace's neck in a collision under the basket. "I was kind of woozy at first," Thornton said. "… I was saying I was ready, but I really wasn't. I was kind of wobbly." Thornton managed to make two free throws before being examined for a concussion and neck strain. Thornton returned and, after the Trail Blazers took a two-point lead with 6:03 to play, scored five unanswered"
Injured King, Thornton to sit out 1-2 weeks
"The Kings will be without leading scorer Marcus Thornton for one to two weeks because of a "significant hematoma in his left thigh," the team announced Wednesday. The injury was diagnosed after an ultrasound test on Thornton's leg. Thornton was found to have a left thigh contusion and missed three games after being kneed in his leg by Orlando center Dwight Howard as he set a screen Jan. 8."
Hornets considering trying to bring back popular guard Marcus Thornton
"Although former LSU guard Marcus Thornton's struggles' in Hornets Coach Monty Williams' system last season ultimately led to him being traded to Sacramento, New Orleans General Manager Dell Demps apparently is interested in giving Thornton another shot. Thornton's agent, Tony Dutt, said he has had discussions this week with Demps, along with four other teams, including the Kings. Thornton is a restricted free agent, and Sacramento can match any offer he receives. Free agents can sign contracts beginning Friday. The Hornets traded Thornton, a fan favorite, last February to acquire forward Carl Landry, who is a free agent."
Thornton delivers late to rally Kings
"It didn't take long for Marcus Thornton to earn the trust of his new teammates. In his third game with the Kings, Thornton scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead them to a win over the Los Angeles Clippers. But it's another thing for teammates to trust Thornton when he's struggling. Entering the fourth quarter Sunday night, Thornton had made only 3 of 11 shots. Still, the Kings trusted Thornton to deliver, and he did with 11 fourth-quarter points to rally the Kings to a 104-103 victory over the Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena. The Kings ended a two-game losing streak and finished 13-28 on the road, their best road mark since going 12-29 in the 2007-08 season. Thornton made 4"
Kings win third in row as Thornton sinks 32
"Marcus Thornton has scored in double figures in 16 of his 17 games with the Kings this season. The lone single-digit effort was a bad one. Thornton missed nine of his 12 shots and committed a season-high six turnovers in a 102-80 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on March 18. Thornton was on his way to another clunker Sunday against the 76ers. He missed six of his first seven shots in the first half. Sacramento was trailing, and Thornton was left to confront himself at halftime. "I talked to myself a little bit and told myself I had to get it going," Thornton said. "The guys felt the same way. It was a team effort, though." The team got Thornton the ball in the third quarter. He scored 19"
Thornton scores 42 as Kings outrace Warriors
"Changing teams usually involves a feeling-out period when the new player defers unnecessarily to his new teammates. Marcus Thornton said his feeling-out period with the Kings lasted two games. In his third game, he scored 29 points. Monday night's game was Thornton's 10th as a King, and it was memorable. Thornton scored a career-high 42 points to lead the Kings over the Golden State Warriors 129-119 at Power Balance Pavilion. He set his previous high of 37 points Feb. 23, 2010, as a rookie with New Orleans at Cleveland. The win ended a six-game losing streak for the Kings, who scored their second-most points this season, trailing a 136-133 overtime loss to Washington. It was also a"
Hornets trade Marcus Thornton to Kings for Carl Landry
"The New Orleans Hornets have traded guard Marcus Thornton to the Sacramento Kings for forward Carl Landry. The trade became official about 3:30 p.m. after a conference call with league headquarters in New York. No additional Hornets moves are expected today, according to sources, Hornets General Manager Dell Demps, in a statement released by the club, said the trade would benefit both teams."
Hornets tell Thornton to skip shoot-around; Thornton hasn't been told of trade yet
"Because of on-going negotiations regarding a trade, reportedly that could send backup shooting guard Marcus Thornton to Sacramento, the New Orleans Hornets told Thornton not to attend Wednesday's shoot-around at New Orleans Arena. "The trade is pending; nothing has been finalized," Hornets Coach Monty Williams said. "So we just decided it would be best not for him to come to the arena so he wouldn't have to be subjected to this (media questioning)." The Hornets are reportedly sending Thornton to the Kings for reserve power forward Carl Landry, but Williams, by league rule, is forbidden to speak about trades that have not yet been consummated. "It would be irresponsible of me to even go"
Hornets close to finalizing trade involving Marcus Thornton and Kings' Carl Landry
"New Orleans Hornets General Manager Dell Demps is close to finalizing a trade deal before Thursday's deadline that would send second-year shooting guard Marcus Thornton and cash considerations to the Sacramento Kings for forward Carl Landry, according to league sources. The deal is expected to completed by Wednesday. Though a scoring threat off the bench, the Hornets have not been pleased with Thornton's defensive development. Hornets Coach Monty Williams has said they have too many wing players, and with Marco Belinelli going to the bench after losing his starting spot to Willie Green, he is taking minutes away from Thornton. Landry, a three-year veteran, is a scoring threat in the post."
Thornton, Hornets work overtime at N.O. Arena to stop Magic winning streak
"The Orlando Magic came into New Orleans Arena on Wednesday night one of the hottest teams in the NBA, winners of nine straight. They left -- thanks to the clutch overtime shooting of reserve guard Marcus Thornton -- merely another loser on the Hornets' home court, the 15th victim so far this season. The Hornets needed an extra five minutes, but managed to do something no one had done since last month -- beat the Magic 92-89 in overtime, halting Orlando's league-leading winning streak in front of 13,688. Orlando's string began Dec. 23 when the Magic beat San Antonio 123-101, stopping the Spurs' 14-game winning streak. The Magic's last loss was Dec. 21 against Dallas, 105-99. Thornton"
Former LSU guard Marcus Thornton emerging off the bench for the New Orleans Hornets
"New Orleans Hornets shooting guard Marcus Thornton has shook off a preseason shooting slump to emerge as the team's third-leading scorer. Thornton is averaging 11.7 points per game and scored 17 points in 30 minutes off the bench in Saturday night's 99-90 victory against the San Antonio Spurs. In Friday night's home victory against the Denver Nuggets, Thornton scored 10 points. Thornton said he is not forcing things, but is staying patient to make open shots."
Thornton patiently waiting for shots to fall
"After excelling as a scorer last season, Hornets second-year shooting guard Marcus Thornton expects to have even better results this season. So far during the preseason, Thornton's performance has been anything but stellar. Instead of taking over games as he did last season, such as when he tied a franchise rookie record with 37 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Thornton has struggled to make open shots and consistently defend the way Hornets Coach Monty Williams demands. Going into today's road exhibition game against the Charlotte Bobcats, Thornton is shooting 20.4 percent from the field in six preseason games. Though he set a franchise rookie record with 117 3-pointers last"
Marcus Thornton, Peja Stojakovic as reserves looks promising for New Orleans Hornets
"It might be a gamble, but the decision could pay off hugely for the New Orleans Hornets if second-year guard Marcus Thornton can thrive coming off the bench along side Peja Stojakovic. New Orleans' reserves, considered by many the weak link on this transformed roster, could be bolstered considerably by having two players who can score points in bunches coming into games this season off the bench. In Saturday night's exhibition opener against the Memphis Grizzlies, it gave the Hornets their first opportunity to see what kind of punch Thornton – who last season set a team record for points in a quarter when he scored 23 in a game at Cleveland – and Stojakovic, one of the most feared shooters"
Thornton ready for another big season
"Marcus Thornton was having as much fun as the kids Tuesday morning. The Hornets' guard hosted a youth basketball camp at Pelican Park in Mandeville and taught participants fundamentals and spent time playing with them. Thornton sprinted up and down the court, making a few steals and even trying a dunk late in the camp. After about two hours, a visibly tired Thornton told the kids he got a good workout. "I haven't played like this since the season," Thornton told his campers. And with the 2010-11 preseason about four months away, Thornton still has time to get back into playing shape for a follow-up to his standout rookie season."
New Orleans Hornets' Darren Collison named first-team All-Rookie; Marcus Thornton second teamer
"Though neither received serious consideration for rookie of the year honors, New Orleans Hornets rookie guards Darren Collison and Marcus Thornton were recognized for their surprising seasons on Friday with Collison named to the first team of the NBA's All-Rookie squad, while Thornton got second-team honors. They become the first rookie tandem so honored in franchise history, after they combined to become the most prolific pair of rookie scorers ever for the Hornets. "Darren and Marcus have been great for us all season," Hornets General Manager Jeff Bower said, "on and off the court. It's great for them to be honored as All-Rookie members. They are two special basketball players and have"
