Now what, Larry? While you were gone, your team changed - for the better
"Chan Gailey is the man who orchestrates the Chiefs' offense, so it's his job to understand how the introduction of various parts will affect the performance of the whole, for better or for worse. He spends early mornings, late nights and the hours in between at work. Last week, his project was to figure how the return of Larry Johnson would impact the Chiefs and their suddenly robust offense. But as the week wound down, Gailey was still as curious as anyone else. "I don't have a great feel for it," admitted Gailey, the Chiefs' offensive coordinator. "We are headed in a certain direction on offense. We hope he will fit into the direction we're going right now." Amid his benching by the ..."
Chiefs' Johnson suspended one game by NFL
"Chiefs running back Larry Johnson has received a one-game suspension without pay from the NFL for violating the league's personal conduct policy. The suspension will cover the game Nov. 9 when the Chiefs play the Chargers in San Diego. The league indicated Friday the suspension probably would have been longer had the Chiefs not deactivated Johnson for the last two games and for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay at Arrowhead Stadium. "It was factored into the decision," NFL senior vice president of public relations Greg Aiello said. The league didn't elaborate on how it decided on an appropriate penalty for Johnson other than to say in a statement announcing the suspension that "Johnson has ..."
Johnson returns to practice, but his playing status is uncertain
"Running back Larry Johnson returned to practice Wednesday, a week after his most recent practice and subsequent public apology for his recent brushes with trouble. But that doesn't mean he'll be in uniform Sunday against Tampa Bay. Coach Herm Edwards hasn't announced officially that Johnson won't play, but he dropped his strongest hint yet Wednesday that Johnson won't be in the lineup. Asked whether the Chiefs would consider playing Johnson if the team's other backs were injured, Edwards said: "We still have (Jackie) Battle," referring to a running back on Kansas City's practice squad. Johnson met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday in New York to discuss Johnson's behavior, ..."
LJ charged with assault; he'll meet with Goodell today
"When Larry Johnson meets with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell today in New York, the two will have a lot to talk about. Johnson, the embattled Chiefs running back, found himself with another court date when he was charged with simple assault Monday for allegedly spitting a drink on a woman on Oct. 10. This follows another recent charge of simple assault for an alleged shoving incident in February involving another woman. It's unclear when Johnson, 28, will be back on the field. Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson indicated in a statement that Johnson would not play in Sunday's game against Tampa Bay at Arrowhead Stadium. That would be the third straight game Johnson has missed. ..."
Chiefs RB Larry Johnson charged with assault
"Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson has been charged with simple assault for spitting his drink in a woman's face. Kansas City police spokesman Darin Snapp said Johnson was charged Monday and turned himself in, later being released after posting a $500 bond. Snapp said the incident occurred on Oct. 10 at a Kansas City nightclub. The 24-year-old victim reported that Johnson threatened to kill her boyfriend before spitting his drink in her face. After leaving the bar, she said Johnson tried to spit on her again as he was escorted out."

Chiefs' Larry Johnson at a crossroads in his life
"A light rain falls outside Club Blonde. On the other side of the glass door, the lights are dim and the music is calming. Candles dance in the midst of square, stainless steel tables, a place to rest your tumbler while you lean back in brown leather couches. There are TVs in Blonde, but there are no sports highlights or eye-gouging talk shows at this lounge on the southeast edge of the Country Club Plaza. In here, the plasma televisions show an endless video of a brunette staring into the screen, her deep eyes looking past crimson candles that match her nail polish. It's soothing. It is 10 p.m. on a Thursday, and the upscale Kansas Citians whom Blonde attracts have begun to file in. The ..."
Chiefs' Johnson won't play Sunday against Jets
"The Chiefs had Larry Johnson sit out last week's game as punishment for being late to practice and other team obligations. Their starting halfback won't play again Sunday when the Chiefs face the Jets at the Meadowlands, but coach Herm Edwards indicated that this time, it's more because he didn't think Johnson could adequately prepare himself to play. "I think he's got enough on his plate to deal with without trying to worry about playing a football game," Edwards said. Johnson faces a simple assault charge stemming from a February incident in which he allegedly shoved a woman at a Kansas City nightclub. Kansas City police are also investigating an allegation that Johnson this month spat a ..."
Johnson realizes he's the problem
"The appropriate response is to accept Larry Johnson's apology and wish him well in recovery. We don't need to express our disapproval of his poor behavior, throw away his jersey or pray that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell hands Larry a season-long ban. There's no reason to spend time publicly speculating on when he'll screw up next. We have nothing to lose by taking Johnson's apology at face value. I believe him. He's disgusted with himself, humiliated, remorseful and at a loss to define exactly who he is and what makes him happy. We've all been there at some point. We've all had to take stock of ourselves and work to eliminate the behaviors that limit our emotional, intellectual and ..."

Johnson to sit out for Chiefs; Croyle and Huard to IR
"Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said during his press conference Wednesday that RB Larry Johnson will be deactivated again this week and won’t play against the New York Jets. Johnson, who sat out last week for violating team rules, is currently under investigation by police for allegedly assaulting a woman. “It’s my decision,” said Edwards. Edwards said Koby Smith and rookie Jamaal Charles would again share the rushing duties in Johnson’s absence. Edwards also named QB Tyler Thigpen the starter this week, and announced that Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard have both been placed on the injured-reserve list."
Chiefs' Larry Johnson could sit out again vs. Jets
"Running back Larry Johnson, deactivated by the Chiefs last week for breaking unspecified team rules, could miss Sunday's game against the Jets after an alleged altercation with a woman. Chiefs coach Herm Edwards was noncommittal when asked Tuesday if Johnson, the Chiefs leading rusher, would play against the Jets. "We're looking into it and we'll do what's right for this football team," Edwards said on This Week In Football on the YES Network. "I've always said that. The football team comes first." The NFL is reviewing the matter, and Johnson could face a suspension by commissioner Roger Goodell for violating the NFL personal conduct policy, although that is not considered imminent. The ..."
Police investigating allegations involving the Chiefs' Larry Johnson
"A 24-year-old woman claims that Larry Johnson intentionally spit his drink in her face at a Kansas City nightclub earlier this month, according to a police report released Monday. No charges had been filed or citations issued as of Monday, but Kansas City police said they were continuing to investigate the Oct. 14 incident at Club Blonde, 100 Ward Parkway. The NFL also is conducting an investigation. Johnson, who has been accused by a woman of criminal offenses four times since he joined the Chiefs five years ago, could eventually be suspended for violating the league's personal-conduct policy Johnson's attorney, Kevin E.J. Regan, said his client was cooperating fully with NFL ..."
Johnson may not start Sunday
"The Chiefs might extend Larry Johnson's absence from their starting lineup. Coach Herm Edwards said Monday that he hadn't determined whether Johnson would play in Sunday's game against the Jets at the Meadowlands. Edwards held Johnson out of Sunday's 34-10 loss to Tennessee at Arrowhead Stadium because Johnson was late for meetings and other team obligations. Edwards said last week the benching would be for only one game."
Winslow, LJ could face suspensions
"Welcome back to another installment of the "Principal's Office." Today's two offenders -- Kellen Winslow and Larry Johnson (pictured) -- are in the office for bad behavior, not bad performance. Winslow ripped the Browns' organization, saying he felt like a "piece of meat" during his recent hospitalization. Browns coach Romeo Crennel in turn expressed disappointment in Winslow and brought up the possibility of a suspension. This isn't the first time Winslow has spoke his mind. Everybody, their brother and their cousin has at least once referred to Winslow as a "soldier," give or take the profanity. Suspension or not, Winslow has been a disappointment this season. Winslow caught a TD in the ..."
More trouble for Chiefs' Larry Johnson
"More trouble has wrapped up Chiefs running back Larry Johnson. He reportedly was involved in a late-night altercation with a woman during the team's bye weekend. Charges have not been filed. Chiefs president Carl Peterson acknowledged Johnson's latest brush with trouble, an altercation separate from the February incident for which he'll face simple-assault charges at a December court appearance. "We are very disappointed," Peterson said in a team release. "We will cooperate fully with the Kansas City authorities who are investigating the matter." The Chiefs responded to the most recent incident Sunday night, hours after the team's 34-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans. Johnson was inactive ..."
Could the Chiefs do without Larry? Smith and Charles might provide the answer
"Kolby Smith didn't exactly predict that his first start this season as the Chiefs' running back would go as well as his starting debut in 2007. But he pointed to that 150-yard, two-touchdown performance against Oakland as a possibility, because the seldom-used Smith is preseason fresh. "I feel great," he said. "No injuries, no nicks, no bruises. I haven't really been taking those hard hits, so I'm ready to go." Meanwhile, rookie Jamaal Charles feels like he's back in college at Texas. He's going to be more than just a third-down back for the first time in his NFL career. "It's going to be a fun game this week," he said. "It's my time to shine." It's certainly possible that things might not ..."
Chiefs' Edwards says LJ will be inactive for Sunday's game
"Herm Edwards stood in a cramped room at the Chiefs' practice facility Thursday and revealed the latest twist of this season's most unpredictable drama. Running back Larry Johnson will be inactive for Sunday's game against Tennessee, benched because he was late to team meetings and other obligations. Edwards said Johnson had practiced this week as the scout-team running back and that he'd be one of the Chiefs' inactive players Sunday. "He knows exactly where I'm coming from," Edwards said. "He understands I have to make decisions that reflect my ability to lead this football team." Edwards said Johnson's benching was for violating team rules and was not related to or affected by a simple ..."
Edwards vague on LJ's status
"Chiefs coach Herm Edwards spent Tuesday and Wednesday avoiding reporters' questions about running back Larry Johnson's availability Sunday and whether an arrest for an alleged late-night scuffle might affect his playing status. Edwards was vague when asked during his weekly news conference Tuesday whether he expected Johnson to face discipline as a result of the arrest, whether that discipline was levied by the NFL or by the team. Edwards remained vague Wednesday but did say that if Johnson would be disciplined, it would "absolutely not" come from the league. "Larry's practicing," Edwards said. "That's all we need to know. I don't need to make a decision on what happens with any player ..."
