Angelo won't commit to Orton beyond '09
"The Bears might be committed to Kyle Orton for next year but beyond that is anybody's guess. General manager Jerry Angelo left things up in the air during his Tuesday press conference when asked if Orton is the long-term answer at quarterback. ``I'm not convinced 100 percent obviously,'' he said. ``I believe in Kyle. But until Kyle puts a good year together, we can’t say for sure. ``I saw some really good things out of Kyle, particularly early on in the season. He didn’t have the second half of the season that he did the first half of the season. Is that part of the growing pain that comes along with the position? I can't answer that right now.'' Orton is signed through the 2009 season. ..."
Turner endorses Orton as starter in '09
"With the 2008 season in the books, it's time to start building for next year. The first question -- the eternal question when it comes to the Bears -- is whether the team finally has solved its unending issue at quarterback. Is Kyle Orton the starter next fall, or should he compete with a player to be named for the most crucial job on the field? ''All players will have competition,'' coach Lovie Smith said. ''Everybody's in the same group. But Kyle is our quarterback. He has done a lot of good things for us this year, but we all start from scratch and go from there.'' That's quite a lukewarm response for such a hot-button issue. At least offensive coordinator Ron Turner was willing to make ..."
Orton becoming an old pro, but his future still unclear
"Kyle Orton will make his 32nd career start tonight against the Green Bay Packers, a short sample for most quarterbacks and a lifetime for a Bear. That will move him one start ahead of Rex Grossman, an accomplishment in itself because in the last 25 seasons, only Jim McMahon, Jim Harbaugh and Erik Kramer have made more starts for the team. That's what happens when a different guy is climbing out of the clown car every few weeks for the better part of a decade. It was a fact lost on Orton, and understandably so. He has the Packers on his mind and has had the various and slim playoff possibilities to occupy his thoughts when he hasn't been preparing. ''To me, this is just another game,'' he ..."
Next 2 games are key for Kyle Orton's future with Bears
"Ron Jaworski kept his assistant busy Thursday breaking down every pass Kyle Orton has had batted down this season. The final tally will make Jaworski more informed when the ESPN analyst calls the Bears-Packers "Monday Night Football" game at Soldier Field. But Jaworski, whose eyes are to quarterback play what an X-ray machine is to bones, didn't need statistics to conclude whether he thinks the Bears should commit long-term to Orton. "No," Jaworski told the Tribune Thursday in a phone interview. "[But] they might." The Bears might feel better about doing so if Orton finishes the season closer to the way he started it. But what if he doesn't? That makes Orton the Bears player who has the ..."
Orton steps into red zone vs. Jags
"Kyle Orton won't be offering anyone $1 million to prove that wasn't blood on his left sock during Sunday's game. This bloody sock won't raise the controversy that Curt Schilling's did in the 2004 playoffs as the Boston Red Sox won their first World Series title in 86 years. One of Schilling's socks went to the Hall of Fame. It's likely Orton's landed in the garbage. More important than dirty laundry: Orton cleaned up his act in his first strong start since injuring his right ankle m
