Knowshon Moreno News & Rumors

Denver Broncos' Knowshon Moreno hit with DUI charge
"Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno was arrested last week in Denver on a drunken driving charge. The Broncos issued a statement Monday acknowledging the arrest of the 2009 first-round draft pick. "We take the incident involving Knowshon Moreno very seriously and are thoroughly reviewing this matter," the team's statement said. "Our organization will continue to gather information and closely monitor this issue while the legal process runs its course." Moreno, 24, was pulled over Feb. 1 while driving a Bentley at about 70 mph on Interstate 25 near Quincy Avenue and Union Avenue, according to a report by Denver television station KDVR-31. The posted speed limit in the area usually is 65"
Former first-round draft pick Knowshon Moreno keeps running into leg injuries
"Q: Why do the Broncos keep Knowshon Moreno? A: Moreno was placed on the season-ending injured reserve list because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. His future with the Broncos is in question, but that's based more on the team's desire to have a power running game. Moreno was Josh McDaniels?' first draft pick. The former Georgia star was selected 12th overall in the 2009 draft. Now that the Broncos are coached by John Fox, they prefer to have bigger tailbacks."
Broncos lose Knowshon Moreno for season to torn ACL
"Knowshon Moreno's season is over. Coach John Fox said today that Moreno will be placed on injured reserve after the running back tore his anterior cruciate ligament Sunday in Kansas City. Moreno had rushed four times for 52 yards in the first quarter against the Chiefs, including runs of 24- and 22-yards before he was injured. "I feel for him because he battled. He had that hamstring early in the season and battled back from that, and was getting back into the groove," Fox said. "He was having a really, really good day. It's unfortunate. But he's tough-minded, and will battle back from this.""
Broncos stick with running game despite injuries to McGahee, Moreno
"It wasn't so much that the Broncos' play-calling ratio Sunday was 87 percent run, 13 percent pass. It was that the Broncos went 87-13 run despite their top two tailbacks, Willis McGahee? and Knowshon Moreno?, being unable to play most of the game because of first-quarter injuries. Moreno, who had a spectacular 24-yard run in which he hurdled a tackler, suffered a sprained ligament in his right knee. Moreno will have an MRI today to determine if there's a tear, but the initial diagnosis has him missing Thursday night's home game against the New York Jets?. McGahee suffered a strained hamstring on his fourth carry of the Broncos' opening drive. "I'll be all right," McGahee said after the"
Broncos Moreno may have a chance to prove himself on Sunday against Detroit
"Knowshon Moreno? lost his starting job because of an injury. And now, because of an injury — this time to someone else — he's going to get a chance to earn it back. With Willis McGahee recovering from surgery to repair a broken bone in his right hand, Moreno on Sunday against Detroit expects to have the chance to prove himself as the Broncos' starting tailback, the job he held throughout the preseason before straining his hamstring during the season opener."
Broncos' Knowshon Moreno auditioning for the future, just like Tim Tebow
"Broncos coach John Fox, executive vice president of football operations John Elway and general manager Brian Xanders have made no secret that they continue to be in fact-finding missions all over the roster. Fox routinely phrases it as "still learning about this team." Certainly, quarterback, specifically Tim Tebow?, has received most of the attention both near and far. But this football regime for the Broncos is looking for keepers, trying to decide which of the few Mike Shanahan draft picks will remain with the team moving forward and which of the Josh McDaniels draft picks still on the roster will be in the plan beyond what happens for the remainder of this season."
Fantasy Spotlight: Go with McGahee over Moreno in Broncos' backfield
"During training camp, you and Woody Paige were the only ones in the Denver media saying Willis McGahee was better than Knowshon Moreno for the Broncos in the John Fox system. Now that we've seen what McGahee can do I want to know if you think he'll keep it up for the rest of the season. When Moreno gets healthy will this be more of a running back by committee? Should I just drop Moreno in my re-draft league? I have a chance to pick up Patriots rookie RB Stevan Ridley off the waiver wire. — Andre, Lakewood Cecil Lammey: Fox wanted to build a sophisticated ground game and McGahee is simply the best back to do that. In four games he has two 100-yard rushing games. That's the same number of"
Knowshon Moreno will be back in Broncos' backfield today
"Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno is expected to play today against the Tennessee Titans after missing last week's game against Cincinnati with a hamstring pull. What can the Broncos expect from their third-year tailback? After missing the entire preseason last year with a torn hamstring, Moreno returned for the opener against Jacksonville and rushed for 60 yards on 15 carries, a 4.0-yard average."
Denver Broncos still hobbled, but their injury report improves
"And on the next-to-last day of summer, key Broncos returned to practice. The official start of fall in the Northern Hemisphere is later than usual this year, with the autumnal equinox landing at 3:04 a.m. MDT on Friday. The Broncos' training room didn't wait that long to fill up. There is some relief this week with the return of wide receiver Brandon Lloyd? (groin), tailback Knowshon Moreno? (hamstring), defensive end Elvis Dumervil? (shoulder) and linebacker D.J. Williams (elbow). "We're still short a few, but it's good to have those guys back out there," coach John Fox said. "It's nice to be able to get through a practice. We've kind of struggled in the first couple weeks just getting"
Broncos' reserves ready as Dumervil, Bailey, Moreno not likely to play
"They are the guys behind The Guys?. And when Broncos coach John Fox tries to push aside his team's rather long, star-studded injury report, he does it with what is a common NFL refrain these days. "It's the next man up," Fox said. "That's our philosophy." Well, Jason Hunter, Cassius Vaughn and Lance Ball are the next men up. And when the Broncos take the field against the Bengals on Sunday, there is a good chance they will be in the lineup. Defensive end Elvis Dumervil (shoulder), cornerback Champ Bailey (hamstring) and running back Know-shon Moreno (hamstring) did not practice this week, and wide receiver Brandon Lloyd (groin) practiced on a limited basis Friday. So the Broncos face the"
Big names on Broncos injury list after loss to Raiders
"As if losing to the Raiders for the fourth straight time wasn't bad enough for the Broncos. They also saw several key starters leave the game with injuries. Elvis Dumervil, Champ Bailey, Brandon Lloyd and Knowshon Moreno will all have MRIs on Tuesday. Dumervil has a strained shoulder, an injury that he told reporters he first suffered this week in practice. He was able to keep practicing through it, and started the game, but came out midway through the first quarter. He was able to return, but played only on passing downs. He was replaced by Jason Hunter in the base defense."

There's no set plan when it comes to Moreno, McGahee
"In what will be considered troubling news to fantasy football players everywhere, the Broncos have no set rotation at running back, where Knowshon Moreno and Willis McGahee will split the carries. While McGahee is expected to get more work as the team approaches the opposing goal line, offensive coordinator Mike McCoy said there is no formal plan other than the guy making the yardage will keep getting the carries. "We're going to roll them," McCoy said. "They're going to play, and if one of them is tired, the other one is going in. Then we'll just keep them going. Both of them are going to play plenty of snaps, but we're not going to worry about counting snaps with them. "If someone is in"
Broncos Mailbag: Cloudy futures for Broncos Orton, Tebow and Moreno in 2011
"Look into your crystal ball. How many games will each of Denver's three quarterbacks start this year? ---Luke Stephens, Florida Equipped with a feathered turban and black cape, the first vision is I see is ... wait for it ... I see, Luke, that you will live a long and prosperous life. Now, Broncos quarterbacks ... visions ... I have two visions, Luke. Vision 1: Kyle Orton starts 16 games, Tim Tebow none. Brady Quinn none. I see Orton staying healthy all year, playing well. I see the Broncos with a chance to make the playoffs heading into their final game Jan. 1 against Kansas City at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. And I see new bright colors at Sports Authority Field. I will now give"
Will John Fox help Knowshon Moreno?
"Fantasy owners often have a natural reaction anytime an NFL team changes its coach: We look at the incoming coach's track record with other teams and make assumptions that what he did there will seamlessly translate here. 32 Questions In the case of John Fox, the Carolina Panthers' coach from 2002 to 2010, his reputation is that of a run-heavy coach, so naturally, the gut reaction for many is that running back Knowshon Moreno's stock should instantly soar. Although it's true that Fox's teams, at least his offenses, are built around the running game, it's a bit of a mischaracterization to call him a "run-based coach." In truth, he's a defensively minded coach, and there's no question that"
Broncos running back Knowshown Moreno reshaping his workouts, body
"Knowshon Moreno lifted his chin over the pull-up bar for his final repetition - of 45 - and collapsed into a sweaty, out-of-breath heap on the floor of the CrossFit Verve gym in North Denver. Moreno, the Broncos' third-year running back, had just cranked out 45 "thrusters" - an overhead press with a 95-pound bar - and those 45 pull-ups - broken up into sets of 21, 15 then 9, all in 3 minutes, 39 seconds. That time is considered elite by CrossFit standards, and shows an improvement of 4 1/2 minutes from when he first did this fitness test six weeks ago. "I want to come into the season in the best shape I can be. I want my body to be in great shape so I can go out there and practice hard,"
Broncos' Knowshon Moreno uncertain with rib injury for Chargers
"With Knowshon Moreno still recovering from a rib injury he suffered at Oakland two weeks ago, the Broncos may be forced to go the committee route again in the backfield to close out the season Sunday. Moreno left Sunday's victory over Houston after seven carries when he aggravated the injury. Interim coach Eric Studesville said Moreno could have come back into the game, but that he elected to stick with Correll Buckhalter and Lance Ball getting the work in the second half. Buckhalter scored - on a run and a pass reception - and finished with 42 yards rushing. "We're going to wait and see how that goes," Studesville said of Moreno. "Knowshon's getting treatment and this time of year"
Knowshon gaining ground
"This was the kind of day Broncos fans had been waiting for from Knowshon Moreno for almost two years. The former first-round draft pick was confidently hitting the holes set by the Broncos' offensive line, accelerating into the second level of the Kansas City defense and breaking tackles and dragging defenders for extra yards. By halftime of Sunday's 10-6 loss to the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, Moreno had 85 yards rushing, more than he had in all but one full game this season. By midway through the fourth quarter, that total had nearly doubled to a career-high 161 yards rushing, and a staggering 7 yards per carry average. "Everything was flowing," Moreno said. "Up front, they did an"
Broncos' McDaniels says RB Moreno will be OK for London game
"Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels said this morning he believed running back Knowshon Moreno would ready to go for at least some duty in Sunday's game against the 49ers in London. In the early portion of Wednesday's practice, Moreno grabbed his right hamstring and consulted with Broncos head trainer Steve Antonopulos. Moreno missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury and then missed three games earlier this season with another hamstring injury. Asked this morning, before practice, what Moreno's status would be, McDaniels said: "I think he's going to be fine." The Broncos were set to start practice just after 10 a.m. McDaniels, however, did say that defensive lineman Kevin"
Knowshon Moreno may have a hamstring injury
"RB Knowshon Moreno's status for Sunday's game vs. San Francisco became more interesting when he grabbed his right hamstring Wednesday during a drill and then was seen commiserating with the head trainer. Moreno pulled his right hamstring on the first day of camp, forcing him to miss the entire preseason. A pulled left hamstring kept him inactive for three games. It was only recently that the '09 first-round pick had begun to get his conditioning up to the point where he could be an every-down contributor. In fact, coach Josh McDaniels only hours before Moreno seemingly tweaked his leg was talking about him not being "a two-down player" and a possible factor in the passing game on third"
No such thing as Broncos' Moreno getting too fired up for a game
"To get full value for that ticket, show up early and watch Broncos tailback Knowshon Moreno in pregame warm-ups. He struts. He sprints through the opposing team's stretch. He glares. He nods excessively. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. It's one thing for a defensive player such as Broncos safety Brian Dawkins or former linebacker Al Wilson to become a pregame psycho. It's rare when an offensive player, particularly a running back, becomes so emotionally charged. "That's normal for me," Moreno said. "Every game is the same. I'm just excited to be back out there. I like to try to fire guys up. Try to help out the team, basically." After missing the previous three games because of a strained right hamstring,"
Broncos RB Moreno expected to shake injury, play next week
"The Denver Broncos don't have running back Knowshon Moreno for Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens, but they fully expect him to play next week, a team source said. There was a sense that Moreno would play this week, but he ultimately was ruled out because of a hamstring injury that has sidelined him since Week 2. Moreno has 111 yards on 39 carries in two games this season. The Broncos, who are averaging an NFL-worst 55 rushing yards per game this season, will host the New York Jets in Week 6."
Broncos' running back Moreno questionable for Ravens game
"Time to downgrade Knowshon Moreno's status from "hopeful" to "questionable" for Sunday's game at Baltimore. The Broncos' starting running back will not practice today, coach Josh McDaniels said this morning. That, after Moreno returned to the field Wednesday for the first time since injuring his hamstring Sept. 23. The practice didn't go poorly, McDaniels said, but Moreno is not yet healthy enough to take the field on back-to-back days. McDaniels said earlier in the week that he was hopeful Moreno would be ready to go in time to face the Ravens. "I think we're trying to make sure we make a smart decision on when he's ready, when he's not," McDaniels said. "Unfortunately, we can't have him"
Broncos RB Moreno returns to practice
"Never fear, Broncos running game. Help, or some semblance of it, appears to be on the way. Starting running back Knowshon Moreno practiced Wednesday for the first time since injuring his hamstring Sept. 23. Moreno missed the past two games, when the Broncos rushed for a total of only 66 yards — including 22 from quarterback Kyle Orton. Moreno was limited in practice but took the first repetitions in individual drills in the early portion of practice that is open to the media. There is no guarantee, of course, that Moreno's return — should he be cleared to play Sunday at Baltimore — would rescue the Denver running game. Moreno had 111 yards on 39 carries — an average of 2.8 yards per carry"
Moreno out with new pain after Broncos' practice
"Knowshon Moreno is experiencing the tailback version of the rubber-band effect. Those same tightly wound leg muscles that helped Moreno become the first running back selected in the 2009 draft are seemingly also prone to snapping. Moreno yanked his "other" hamstring during practice this week and Friday was ruled out of the Broncos' game Sunday against Indianapolis. Moreno severely pulled his right hamstring on the first day of training camp on Aug. 1, an injury that sidelined him for more than four weeks and the entire preseason. It was his left hamstring that popped Thursday."
Broncos' Moreno injures hamstring, won't play vs. Colts
"The injury suffered by Broncos starting running back Knowshon Moreno during practice Thursday was to his left hamstring, not the hamstring he pulled on the first day of training camp on Aug. 1, according to two NFL sources. Moreno yanked the right hamstring in camp, an injury that sidelined him for more than four weeks and the entire preseason. It was the left hamstring that Moreno injured during practice Thursday, a setback that will keep him out of the game Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. Moreno had been busy, with mixed results, in the Broncos first two regular-season games, rushing 39 times but for only 111 yards — a 2.8-yard average — and two touchdowns. He did have four"
Moreno good to go after making his 2010 debut
"Welcome back to football, Knowshon Moreno. The Broncos running back made his 2010 debut Sunday after missing the preseason because of a hamstring injury suffered Aug. 1 during the first practice of training camp. Moreno admitted he felt rusty through the first half of the game against the Jaguars and needed to trust that his body could sustain the hits of a regular-season game. "As the game went on, I felt pretty good out there," said Mor- eno, who had 15 carries for 60 yards in the Broncos' 24-17 loss. "I felt strong. After the first couple of hits, I was pretty good." Moreno's best run came in the third quarter when he bolted for a 17-yard gain, which included an athletic hurdle move"
Broncos need Moreno at full strength
"For Knowshon Moreno, the challenge is straightforward: How can Denver possibly be the best team in the AFC West if it has the worst starter at running back in the division? The biggest question mark on the Broncos is Moreno. Why? With all due respect to high-mileage veteran Correll Buckhalter and unproven free agent Lance Ball, there really is no Plan B for the Denver rushing attack. With Moreno fighting a hamstring injury that obviously seems much worse than originally advertised, do the Broncos have a leg to stand on when they need tough yardage on third down? "There's going to be a lot of rust to shake off, but I think I'll be all right," Moreno said Wednesday. If Moreno is not 100"
Moreno a big piece of the Broncos' puzzle
"It has taken some time for running back Knowshon Moreno to heal enough to return to the practice field, yet the Broncos need him to have a quick start when the regular season begins Sept. 12 at Jacksonville. Moreno missed virtually all of training camp with a hamstring injury, and now the Broncos don't want a little slice of history to repeat itself. Moreno missed virtually all of the preseason last year — his rookie season — after a brief holdout was followed by a sprained knee he suffered in the preseason opener against the 49ers. Moreno did not play again until the regular-season opener at Cincinnati. He then rushed for just 19 yards against the Bengals, a game in which the Broncos"
Moreno to practice this week
"In his postgame comments, Broncos coach Josh McDaniels indicated starting tailback Knowshon Moreno would practice this week. Moreno's primary backup, Correll Buckhalter, returned to practice on a limited basis last week but did not play in the preseason game Sunday night against Pittsburgh. It would be a surprise if Moreno, who has been out a month with a hamstring injury, played Thursday night in the preseason finale at Minnesota."
Broncos expecting a lot out of Knowshon Moreno
"Today's questions about the Broncos come from Hashmat Khorsand. Send your questions via e-mail to jlegwold@denverpost.com . Q: I was just wondering when Knowshon Moreno would return and what kind of season should we expect from him? A: Hashmat, Moreno suffered a hamstring injury during the first practice of the first day of training camp and has not practiced since. He missed most of training camp last year after a brief holdout and then because of a sprained knee he suffered in the preseason opener in San Francisco. The Broncos have been bringing him back slowly. Moreno has been working with the team's strength coaches every day and going through his rehab with the team's trainers."
Knowshon out 3 weeks; Buckhalter one week
"Broncos starting running back Knowshon Moreno is expected to be out three weeks after an MRI exam revealed no significant tear to his hamstring, according to an NFL source. Moreno suffered the injury Sunday morning during the Broncos' first training-camp session. A few minutes later, Broncos backup running back Correll Buckhalter left the field with an upper back pull. When Buckhalter experienced tingling in his extremities, he was sent to a local hospital as a precaution but was quickly released after his head, neck, back and spine were checked."
Moreno says his recent downturn isn't rookie trait
"Don't even mention to Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno that perhaps he has hit the "rookie wall." The team's first-round draft pick doesn't believe it exists. "I just don't," Moreno said. "I haven't hit one yet, so I'm not worried about it." But it's a valid question after Moreno's rushing production has dropped in the past two weeks. After rushing for more than 80 yards in games nine through 12, including a season-high 97 against Washington on Nov. 15, Moreno had only 63 yards against Indianapolis and 42 last week against Oakland, both times as the primary tailback with veteran Correll Buckhalter sidelined with an ankle injury. His second-half production has declined in those games"
Moreno not in running to get job done for Broncos
"Perhaps the Broncos' rookie running back should be called No-Gain Moreno, or his name possibly should be written as Knwshn Mren. Here are statistics the Broncos won't tell you, and you may not believe: Of Knowshon Moreno's 224 runs this season, 36.6 percent have been stopped for 1, 0 or negative yards. A startling 23.7 percent of his rushes have produced a cumulative minus-39 yards. Knowshon had no gain on five of his carries Sunday against the Raiders. He lost yardage on four attempts. He picked up 1 yard twice. His other eight runs resulted in 3, 8, 7, 5, 7, 8, 6 and 4 yards. Nineteen rushes for 42 yards, a 2.2-yard average. No wonder the Broncos' offense is struggling, straggling,"
Broncos' top pick Moreno back on field
"At last, a little good news for the Broncos on the injury front. First-round draft pick Knowshon Moreno is back on the field with the team today for the first time since spraining his MCL Aug. 14 in San Francisco. Moreno is wearing an orange "non-contact" jersey, meaning he probably will be held out of much of the team work later in the session, but he will be able to participate in individual and position drills and will be getting what coaches call the "mental reps.""
Moreno signs with Broncos, 8 days late
"The next time Knowshon Moreno runs a sprint, it could be on the immaculate grounds of Dove Valley. The next time Moreno pumps iron, it likely will be from inside the Broncos' state-of-the-art, 9,000-square-foot conditioning center. So long, Georgia Bulldogs. Moreno can set his fast, elusive feet inside Broncos headquarters again after he and the team reached an agreement on a five-year, $23 million contract that includes a guarantee of nearly $13 million. "There wasn't much I could do except work out all week," Moreno said. "I'm happy to be part of the Broncos now, and I'm going to get back there and work hard." Thus, Moreno's contract holdout expired at eight days. He was the Broncos'"
Broncos, Moreno close to deal
"Significant progress has been made in contract negotiations between the Broncos and running back Knowshon Moreno, an NFL source said tonight. An agreement on what will be a 5-year deal has not yet been reached for the team's top draft pick, but it's getting close. Moreno was still in Georgia as the Broncos prepared for their scrimmage tonight at Invesco Field at Mile High. The worth of Moreno's deal is expected to be at least $22 million ($2 million more than No. 13 pick Brian Orakpo) with a guarantee in excess of $12.5 million."
Intense focus on signing Moreno
"Whether between the hash marks or around the first-round bargaining tables, the Broncos are counting on Knowshon Moreno to break free. The NFL has a holdout logjam among players taken in the first round of the draft. No. 8 pick Eugene Monroe, No. 9 B.J. Raji, No. 10 Michael Crabtree, No. 11 Aaron Maybin and No. 12 Moreno are still unsigned. If Moreno waited for those ahead of him to reach agreements to slot in his contract, the Broncos may not get their new running back for at least another week. Negotiations for the Nos. 8-11 picks seem to be making no progress. So the Broncos and Moreno's agents have left the group and independently engaged in intense negotiations. The next 24 hours are"
Moreno making move to catch some attention
"Rookie running back Know- shon Moreno has been biding his time behind two veterans through the first two days of the Broncos' mandatory minicamp, but he's clearly making an impression on the team's offensive coaches. When it came time for the offensive starters to challenge the first-team defense using a no-huddle offense, it was Moreno who took all of the repetitions instead of LaMont Jordan or Correll Buckhalter. Moreno, the first of the Broncos' two first-round draft picks in April, scored a touchdown after catching a pass from Chris Simms and stretching the ball just inside the pylon. "I like the kid. He can catch good, he's got good foot quickness," Buckhalter said. "I think he's"
