Former Timberwolves guard Jonny Flynn glad to be out of Minnesota
January 24
St. Paul Pioneer Press
"
Former Timberwolves guard Jonny Flynn does not have good memories about his final season in Minnesota. Flynn, traded to Houston on the night of the 2011 NBA draft, expressed disappointment about the criticism he received from Wolves fans last season and the ongoing speculation about Ricky Rubio joining the team. "I let that get to me too much," Flynn said before Monday night's game against the Timberwolves at Target Center. "Everybody was always talking about Ricky coming here. What I went through here taught me a lot about life." Flynn, who did not play Monday, was selected by the Wolves with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2009 draft. Rubio was taken with the No. 5 pick but chose to remain

Flynn says Houston's 'definitely better for me'

"
Jonny Flynn's smiling, upbeat persona is one reason new Timberwolves boss David Kahn drafted him sixth overall in 2009 for a franchise Kahn deemed lacking both point guards and charisma. Seven months after the Wolves traded him to Houston, Flynn won't exactly call his two seasons with the team lost time for everyone involved, but ... "You always have to take the good from crazy situations," he said. "It was a tough situation coming in as a rookie. Just on draft day, you see just how that transpired. From the start, it was a weird situation." Kahn drafted a guy named Rubio fifth and Flynn sixth -- a pair of point guards, back to back, in a draft filled with promising point guards -- on that

Rockets second-year forward Patrick Patterson played 15 minutes off the bench, his first playing time of the season. With just two full practices of preparation while coming back from offseason ankle surgery, he struggled with his shooting touch and conditioning. "Not quite there yet, but I'm on the correct path toward getting to 100 percent," said Patterson, who missed all four of his shots. With Patterson cleared to make his season debut, Hasheem Thabeet marked his return to Memphis with a return to the inactive list, where he spent most of his time with the Rockets last season and in the season opener in Orlando. He played the final 4:20 on Thursday, scoring six points with two

Rockets get extra pick in Flynn trade after deal amended
June 26
Houston Chronicle
"
A day after the Rockets and Jonny Flynn said there are no issues with a hip condition that required surgery last summer, a person with knowledge of the trade talks that brought Flynn to Houston confirmed the deal had been amended because of the injury. The Rockets received Minnesota's second-round pick next season after the deal was changed Friday. Yahoo! Sports reported Saturday that the Rockets received the extra pick because of concerns team physicians had with Flynn's left hip. But Friday, the Rockets denied there were any lingering issues with the hip. "He's fine," Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said Friday. "There are no issues with that." Morey declined to comment Saturday.

Where do first-round picks Marcus Morris and Donatas Motiejunas, second-round pick Chandler Parsons and third-year guard Jonny Flynn fit in the Rockets' plans? Rockets brass say at this point, the four newcomers acquired in Thursday night's draft are a long way from taking the court to play in Rockets uniforms. And though World Peace will come to the NBA before labor peace, they're not referring to the likely lengthy lockout that is looming. In case you are unaware, Ron Artest petitioned a Los Angeles court to change his name to Metta World Peace. (And yes, I support Artest's move and wish him the very best. I have no doubt that the name change comes from a good place in his heart. Before

Rockets pick Morris, trade up for Motiejunas, land Jonny Flynn

"
Not quite a month after the Rockets put one of the all-time great power forwards on their bench, they spent the draft getting Kevin McHale company. The Rockets drafted two power forwards, selecting Kansas' Marcus Morris with the 14th pick and then moving up to the 20th selection to pick Benetton Treviso's Donatas Motiejunas. Neither is in the McHale mold. The 6-9 Morris could switch to small forward, and the Rockets believe he is suited to defending at either forward spot. Motiejunas, 20, from Lithuania, is more of a long-range shooter than McHale needed to be. But wherever they fit, the Rockets altered their frontcourt Thursday. They had other plans, too. They worked on deals to move up

Knicks target backup point guard, could deal Toney Douglas to Minnesota for Jonny Flynn
June 20
New York Daily News
"
The Knicks have had preliminary discussions with the Minnesota Timberwolves about a trade for point guard Jonny Flynn. No formal deal is in place, but the Knicks are debating whether Flynn, the sixth overall pick of the 2009 draft would be a viable option to back up Chauncey Billups for at least one season. Flynn has become expendable now that the Wolves have signed Spanish guard Ricky Rubio, who was taken one pick ahead of Flynn. Toney Douglas would likely be the player traded for Flynn. However, Douglas is coming off major shoulder surgery, which in theory would make him tough to deal. But Flynn is a similar medical risk. The 6-foot guard out of Syracuse had hip surgery last July and was

Point guard Jonny Flynn was excused from Wednesday's game because of personal reasons and was not at the arena. Flynn, who started 81 games as a rookie, suffered through a difficult season after hip surgery last July, appearing in only 53 games. Wolves president of basketball operations David Kahn said he was uncertain about Flynn's future with the team and mentioned Wednesday morning that "maybe the environment needs to change." "We need to be upfront about that," Kahn said regarding Flynn's status with the team. Flynn, the subject of trade rumors before the NBA trade deadline in February, averaged 5.3 points, 3.4 assists and 18.5 minutes.

Jonny Flynn faces up to the reality of his 'rehab season'
February 28
St. Paul Pioneer Press
"
Reality appears to have set in for Timberwolves point guard Jonny Flynn about his slow comeback from hip surgery in July. Flynn categorized his second year in the NBA as a "rehab season," an admission that he's not expected to make a complete recovery until summer. "By the start of next season, I should be ready to go," Flynn said before the Wolves' 126-123 win over Golden State Sunday at Target Center. "This is a year for me to try to get back in the flow of things and find myself. To get the rhythm back I had last season in about a month or so is kind of shaky. It'll take a full summer of going at it every day where I can focus completely on my rehab." Flynn said he still has soreness in

The Minnesota Timberwolves and Houston Rockets are discussing a deal that would land Wolves point guard Jonny Flynn with the Rockets, according to sources briefed on the discussions. ESPN.com reported Wednesday that the Wolves had made Flynn available. Although the full details of the potential deal weren't immediately known, two sources said Thursday that the Rockets were indeed weighing whether to go ahead with the trade in advance of the 3 p.m. deadline.

The Minnesota Timberwolves already have made one trade -- for Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry. Will they make more? A number of GMs are telling me that the Wolves are out there offering Jonny Flynn around the league. Flynn was the No. 6 pick in the draft in 2009. The Wolves drafted Flynn and Ricky Rubio in the lottery -- passing on a number of other more successful guards including Stephen Curry, Brandon Jennings, Jrue Holiday, Ty Lawson and Darren Collison to get them. But injuries and general poor play by Flynn and the possibility of Rubio joining the team this summer now have the Wolves looking to move Flynn.

Jonny Flynn still sore seven months after hip surgery
February 17
St. Paul Pioneer Press
"
Timberwolves point guard Jonny Flynn insists he has not had a setback in his recovery from hip surgery, but complications from the July 27 procedure have led to an extended rest period that will go beyond this weekend's NBA all-star break. Flynn was advised to sit out Wednesday night's game against the Los Angeles Clippers and most likely will miss the Wolves' first two games after Sunday's All-Star Game. The Wolves play at Milwaukee next Tuesday night and face Memphis at home Wednesday night. Flynn, who had surgery on July 27 to repair a torn labrum in his left hip, has complained of stiffness and soreness in his groin. "We're trying to figure this out to get things moving a little

Latest Flynn plan calls for rest
February 17
Minneapolis Star Tribune
"
The Wolves have decided -- and Jonny Flynn agrees -- that it's time for a little rest. Flynn, the second-year point guard coming back from hip surgery to repair an injured labrum, did not play Wednesday against the Clippers. He will rest through the All-Star break and perhaps miss the first two games after the break. It's not that there is a new injury, though Flynn has been experiencing some soreness in his groin. It's just that the team feels Flynn -- who has been working overtime to come back ever since the July surgery -- would benefit from rest. "There is a comfort level you see players playing with, and he doesn't look very comfortable out there," Wolves coach Kurt Rambis said.

Perhaps it's still too soon for Jonny Flynn to make a definitive statement that he's ready to be the Timberwolves' floor leader again. With Luke Ridnour excused from Wednesday night's game against Memphis at Target Center to tend to a family matter, the second-year point guard made his first start of the season. What could have been a seize-the-moment opportunity became more of an intangible breakthrough for Flynn during the Wolves' 102-84 loss in front of 12,662 fans, many of whom booed in the third quarter when the Wolves (11-37) fell behind by 20. Flynn, laboring for nearly four months as he battles back from hip surgery in July, is putting a higher priority on his rehab progress than

Flynn and Telfair fill in as Ridnour misses game
February 3
Minneapolis Star Tribune
"
Not long before Wednesday's game the Timberwolves got the news that starting point guard Luke Ridnour, seeing to a family matter, would not be able to play against the Memphis Grizzlies at Target Center. That meant two things: That Jonny Flynn, in his 23rd game back from hip surgery, would get his first start of the season. And that Sebastian Telfair would get his first meaningful playing time since Flynn returned. The result? The Wolves' offense struggled during a 102-84 loss to the Grizzlies. But it wasn't entirely the fault of point guard play. "They did some good things out there," Wolves coach Kurt Rambis said. Flynn, playing a season-high 26 minutes and 12 seconds, went 5-for-9 with

Jonny Flynn has seen it, heard it, read it. That's what he does. The second-year Timberwolves point guard is a product of the digital age. You know how most athletes and coaches tend to deny ever reading what's written about them? Not Flynn. When he's not working out or practicing, he can be found surfing the Net, reading everything he can find on himself. And that includes articles, columns, blogs, even those snarky comments by folks at the end of such stories. So he knows. "I'm a guy who reads everything. Everything," Flynn said. "I hear everything. People are saying, 'We want to see more out of Jonny Flynn.' That's why you have to put your blinders on and remember what your goals are.

With Rambis mum, Kahn says Flynn needs to play
January 20

While Timberwolves point guard Jonny Flynn struggles very noticeably in his return from July hip surgery, you might be asking yourself a question: Where's Sebastian Telfair? The guy who led the Wolves to a 3-5 record when he started eight games in November is sitting and watching nightly, a situation not likely to change any time soon. When asked if he might turn to Telfair sometime soon, coach Kurt Rambis said: "Any personnel decisions or rotation changes, those are things I keep to myself. Those are just decisions that I make. I don't feel like I have to explain them." Wolves president of basketball operations David Kahn was, well, a bit more transparent. He said all playing-time issues

Nearly a month has passed since point guard Jonny Flynn was cleared to play for the Timberwolves this season, but he continues to search for the rhythm and spark he displayed as a rookie when he started 81 games. The delay in Flynn's recovery from hip surgery in July is challenging his mental toughness and has made him a reserve for the first time in his career, including grade school, AAU competition, high school and college. "I never did this my entire life — coming off the bench," Flynn said after Wednesday's practice at Target Center. "I really didn't think it would take this long to get back to where I was last year, but I'm feeling much better physically lately and I'm seeing

Wolves point guard Jonny Flynn was walking around in the Timberwolves locker room before the game, seemingly without a limp. "Actually," he said, "I feel pretty good." But he didn't play Saturday against the New Jersey Nets at Target Center after rolling his right ankle in Thursday's practice. While the injury isn't serious, the Wolves, only nine games into Flynn's return from hip surgery, are erring on the side of caution. "It's the opposite ankle from his hip, and he didn't practice [Friday]," Wolves coach Kurt Rambis said. "Without seeing him in a full practice, seeing him running to see if he'd be limping on it, favoring it one way or another, as a precaution we're keeping him out."

Timberwolves point guard Jonny Flynn used a physical therapist's version of a rolling pin to massage his body before Wednesday's game at Phoenix. Martell Webster immersed himself in ice water, then a hot tub a day after both he and Flynn made their season debuts in Tuesday's 108-99 loss at Golden State. Both declared themselves perfectly fine after seeing their first game action since each underwent distinctively different surgeries. "I felt great," Flynn said. "No stiffness, no tightness." Timberwolves coach Kurt Rambis says it isn't so, but Jonny Flynn recognizes how the team's offense has evolved from the more regimented one that he led in April. Flynn struggled often in his rookie season with a complex passing system unlike any he had played in before. On Tuesday, he made his season debut after July hip surgery caused him to miss the season's first seven weeks. While he watched from the sidelines, Flynn says, he saw how Rambis has adjusted to a team clearly more talented than last season's 15-victory team. "Not a knock on the team last year, but when you have players like we have now, a coach like Kurt Rambis is going to adapt, he's going to keep his ways but also kind of

Timberwolves coach Kurt Rambis has said on several occasions this season that he and his staff won't know "who we are as a team" until point guard Jonny Flynn and guard-forward Martell Webster are healthy enough to play. The Wolves are getting closer to an identity with the probable return of Flynn and Webster for tonight's game against the Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena. Rambis said Flynn and Webster, both sidelined the entire regular season so far because of injuries, will be activated tonight to help the team endure a five-game West Coast road trip. Rambis, however, declined to say if Flynn and Webster will make their season debut against the Warriors. "It depends on how they

So their returns from surgery -- Flynn from a hip operation in July, Webster from a microdiscectomy on his back --after weeks and months away is here, right? "I said they might be active," Rambis said. "I didn't say they'd play." And so it goes for both players ... Flynn has played two rehab games in the D League and had a third postponed by last weekend's snowstorm. A South Dakota snowstorm denied the Wolves' Jonny Flynn the opportunity to play rehab D League games last weekend, but on Sunday he still -- for the first time since July hip surgery -- declared himself ready for his NBA season debut, Tuesday night at Golden State. Now he just needs to get coach Kurt Rambis and the team's medical staff to agree. "I think I'm ready to get back in it and start playing this week on this road trip; I think [Tuesday] is a very high possibility," Flynn said. "I feel good enough to do it. The Timberwolves recalled guard Jonny Flynn from the D League on Saturday, a move that allows the second-year player to officially practice with the team while he continues to rehab his surgically repaired left hip. Flynn played 24 1/2 minutes for the Sioux Falls Skyforce on Friday night, getting eight points, nine assists and two steals, and said Saturday that he experienced "training camp legs" during and after his first night of real work since the surgery. But that rustiness was already distant memory as Flynn sat in the Wolves locker room, full of smiles and noticeably fidgety to get back there permanently. He hopes to play 35 minutes against the Iowa Energy, and, if all goes well, he could play his first NBA game next week. There's also a chance he could play as many as three D League games. Jonny Flynn was back on the court Tuesday, working out lightly with his teammates after getting clearance from his Colorado hip surgeon to start practicing and predicting he will play his first game sometime in mid- to late November. Flynn's checkup appointment Monday cleared him to practice lightly this week then move on to contact workouts next week. "Everything healed correctly, but we're still going to take it slow," he said. "This is an injury you have to be cautious with. It's still my body, and I still have to listen to it." Flynn underwent surgery in July to correct a hip injury that he said bothered him much of last season. A Vail, Colo., surgeon repaired a tear in his labrum (a

He grew up in Texas and spent his first two collegiate seasons at Iowa State, but Wes Johnson didn't need to know exactly where he was when he arrived with the Timberwolves in Syracuse late Wednesday night. The lady at the hotel told him. "First thing she said was, 'Welcome home,''' he said. "And it feels just like that." Johnson and Jonny Flynn came home to Syracuse and the spacious Carrier Dome for Friday's 99-88 preseason victory over Detroit, even if Flynn watched all night because of his healing hip. He did, however, wear his game uniform and sit on the bench, which, considering the circumstances, could have become a dangerous proposition. "They might need to put a seatbelt on the

The Timberwolves conclude their fleeting European excursion Wednesday knowing that, whatever happens together the rest of this season, they'll always have Paris. Jonny Flynn? Well, he always has his physical therapist. Flynn's teammates completed their schedule of two-a-day sessions a week ago when they left training camp in Mankato bound for London. He continues on, working twice daily not in practices as players did with one another but alone with therapists rehabilitating a hip that a Colorado surgeon repaired 10 weeks ago. In the mornings, he tackles exercises that increase his range of motion and build strength back in that left hip. In the afternoons, he runs and jumps suspended in a

While everything and everyone swirls around him, the NBA's self-proclaimed highest paid ball boy watches from the sideline twice daily at Timberwolves training camp and waits. Jonny Flynn claims that, as much as he wants to play again, he's in no hurry. "We're just going to take our time with this one," he said. One of the world's leading orthopedic hip surgeons repaired Flynn's torn labrum and shaved down bone on his joint socket two months ago in July, a procedure intended to resolve the pain Flynn says he felt in his hip much of last season. Wolves basketball boss David Kahn hopes Flynn can return to running and the court after an Oct. 18 checkup in Colorado and says the second-year

Timberwolves guard Jonny Flynn to miss first week of season

"
Timberwolves point guard Jonny Flynn will miss at least the first week of the season while recovering from hip surgery in July, Wolves president of basketball operations David Kahn said Friday. Flynn, who participated in the Wolves' media day activities Friday, is recovering from a labral tear in his left hip, a cartilage that connects the hip joint. He suffered the injury in the final week of last season as a rookie and aggravated his hip while competing with the Wolves' summer league team. Flynn underwent surgery July 27 at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo. "I'm going back out there with Jonny on Oct. 18 when he's re-evaluated," Kahn said. "We'll know more then, but Jonny is progressing

Jonny Flynn got an early start Tuesday on an ugly Timberwolves tradition: second-year injuries to first-round picks. Flynn underwent surgery to repair a tear in the labrum of his left hip, an injury that almost certainly will keep him out of training camp and could cost him the first month of the 2010-11 season as well. That makes him the fifth consecutive Wolves' first-rounder to be sidelined by major injury in his second season. Flynn was hampered by his sore hip in the final few weeks of his rookie season, and even sat out the finale after starting the Wolves' first 81 games. The injury also kept him from taking part in the Vegas Summer League, and he finally decided to have the hip

The Timberwolves' already svelte payroll grew slimmer still Monday night when the team traded guard Ramon Sessions, center Ryan Hollins and a 2013 second-round pick to Cleveland for the contracts of Delonte West and former Wolves guard Sebastian Telfair. Shortly after the Wolves traded away one of their three point guards, Yahoo! Sports reported that Jonny Flynn --who started 81 of 82 games as a rookie last season -- will need surgery to repair a hip injury and will miss the next three to four months. A Wolves spokesman said he couldn't confirm that Flynn will need surgery, but that timetable would cause him to miss training camp and perhaps the first month of the season. Neither West nor

Point guard Jonny Flynn was unavailable to reporters after the Timberwolves' first day of a three-day minicamp Thursday afternoon at Target Center. The same is true for the NBA, according to team President David Kahn, who quashed reports from Cleveland indicating the Cavaliers were targeting Flynn to fill their backcourt in anticipation of the departure of free agent superstar LeBron James. "Jonny Flynn's not being traded," Kahn said about the sixth overall pick in the 2009 draft. "At this time of year, everybody on our roster is open for discussion. We're not looking to move Jonny Flynn. At the same time, we're not in a position where we'll say, 'No, we won't talk.' At this time of year,

Sources: Cavaliers in talks to acquire point guard Jonny Flynn from Minnesota

With the speculation that LeBron James is leaving for Miami, the Cavaliers have not stopped trying to improve the team. According to multiple league sources, the Cavs are in trade talks with the Minnesota Timberwolves involving point guard Jonny Flynn. This might hold extra intrigue because Flynn is represented not only by the same agent as James, Leon Rose, but also James' marketing firm, LRMR. It is possible that trying to trade for Flynn is an appeal to James before he announces his final decision at 9 p.m. on ESPN tonight. In recent days the team has made a strong and wide-ranging push to trade for James' friend and New Orleans Hornets star guard Chris Paul, but have been rebuffed,

If the final decision were left up to Timberwolves point guard Jonny Flynn, Syracuse forward Wesley Johnson would be the team's selection with the fourth overall pick in next week's NBA draft. As a former Syracuse standout himself, Flynn is biased. But he made a strong case for the 6-foot-7 Johnson, who worked out for the Wolves on Tuesday at Target Center. "Shooting was one of our weakest points last season, and Wes can shoot it," Flynn said after Johnson's workout. "He's long and athletic. He can open up lanes for everybody. He's really a good fit for us." Johnson, considered the best small forward in the draft, said he had a good vibe with the Wolves, the first NBA team to schedule him

Point guard Jonny Flynn had his left hip wrapped in ice after the game after he left it with 8 minutes remaining because of a hip flexor injury. Flynn has played in all 81 games, but by the way he moved after the game, his chance to play all 82 games his rookie season might be over. "Health is more important," Flynn said. "I would love to do that, but if I'm not feeling healthy, I don't want to jeopardize my health just to play 82 games. It's been tight the whole season. Tonight, I just moved the wrong way and felt a sharp pain. It's tight. It's real tight."

Timberwolves rookie guard Jonny Flynn returned to Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night and remembered both the first game and the last one he had played there. Unforgettable, of course, is that six-overtime Big East tournament quarterfinal game in which Flynn played 67 minutes, scored 34 points and led his Syracuse team to victory over Connecticut. "Without that game, without that Big East tournament, I'd still be in school right now," he said. The other game Flynn won't soon forget is the first time he played where he had seen so many times before watching his beloved Knicks play on television. The last time Timberwolves rookie point guard Jonny Flynn had a debut game in New York's Madison Square Garden, he never got a grip on his nerves. As a Syracuse freshman in 2007, Flynn missed all six of his shots, including five three-point attempts, in a Preseason NIT tournament game against Ohio State. For a kid from Niagara Falls, it seemed the bright lights of the "World's Greatest Arena" were too much, too soon. Flynn played seven more games in the Garden during his college career and hardly anyone remembers his star-struck performance against the Buckeyes. Flynn averaged 16 points and three assists in two other games at the Garden his freshman year and then 20 points and nine assists
