Jonathan Stewart News & Rumors

Jonathan Stewart deserves to be Panthers No. 1 running back
"Since 2008, the Carolina Panthers have employed DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart as their running back tandem. It's generally been in that order, too - Williams and Stewart. Williams is the faster one, the flashier one and the one more comfortable with a microphone in front of him. But right now, Stewart is the better one. And while the two have long split their time on the field in a 50-50 sort of way, it's time that Stewart got about 70 percent of the touches. In their "Double Trouble" dynamic, Stewart has become the running back who gives opponents more trouble more often. I'm not advocating that the Panthers switch entirely to Stewart and make Williams an afterthought. Far from"
Stewart, Goodson could miss action at Miami
"The Panthers could be without two of their top tailbacks today in their second exhibition game at Miami. Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson missed Thursday's walkthrough with Achilles injuries they sustained this week in Spartanburg. Panthers coach Ron Rivera said both are questionable for the Dolphins' game. If they can't play, third-year back Tyrell Sutton and former practice squad member Josh Vaughan are expected to receive the carries after starter DeAngelo Williams. The Panthers are missing several starters, including linebacker Jon Beason (Achilles tendinitis), offensive linemen Jeff Otah (knee) and Geoff Schwartz (hip) and fullback Tony Fiammetta (neck). Defensive end Greg Hardy, who"
Jonathan Stewart powers Carolina Panthers rushing attack
"After Carolina Panthers tailback Jonathan Stewart fumbled in the fourth quarter Sunday against Arizona, offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson went right back to him on the next possession. Stewart ripped off a 19-yard run on his next touch and had 48 yards on five carries on a drive that helped seal the Panthers' 19-12 victory. Though the Panthers didn't score, they took nearly four minutes off the clock and forced the Cardinals to use all of their timeouts. "After a couple runs, I don't think they wanted to tackle Stew anymore," said Mike Goodson, the Panthers' other tailback. "He's a big guy. He pounded them and pounded them and it opened up." Goodson's quote describes the Panthers'"
Stewart regains his starting job, runs for 92 yards and a score
"Jonathan Stewart returned to the starting lineup on Sunday and ran for 92 yards and a touchdown for the Carolina Panthers. Stewart, who grew in nearby Lacey, got the start over Mike Goodson, who had amassed 400 yards from scrimmage in his previous three starts. Stewart said he had a number of friends and family members at the game but said he only had to get about a dozen tickets. "Everybody I'm close with, they're just good people in general, so they just go out and get their own," Stewart said. "They're not expecting anything, so that's good." Stewart didn't let them down. He seems to be back on track since sitting out two weeks with a concussion, rushing for 190 yards in the"
Stewart's homecoming bittersweet
"Jonathan Stewart's first football game in the Northwest since he played at the University of Oregon got off to a great start. The Carolina running back and Timberline High School graduate ran for 73 yards and a touchdown in the first half against Seattle on Sunday at Qwest Field. The lowly Panthers, who had won just once this season, led the Seahawks 14-3. That's when Stewart's happy homecoming ended. Seattle rallied after halftime, defeating Carolina, 34-14. The third-year pro finished with 92 yards and a touchdown on a season-high 21 carries. During the game the 5-foot-10, 235-pound Stewart showed the same speed and strength his high school coach Kevin Young remembered seeing at"
Stewart rushes back to form after missing 2 weeks
"The Carolina Panthers had a season-high rushing day, and probably re-established the natural order of their depth chart in Sunday's 24-23 loss to Cleveland. Mike Goodson started after recording back-to-back 100-yard games in the injury absence of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, but it was Stewart who posted the big numbers, the kind that will likely earn him his job back. Stewart finished with a season-high 98 yards on 12 carries, and Goodson added 55 yards on 14 attempts and scored his first career touchdown. The 151 team rushing yards were the highest of the season by 24 yards, even though it's below last year's per-game average (156.1). The Panthers have only topped 100 rushing"
Panthers sign QB; announce top three RBs are out
"The Panthers signed a veteran quarterback to their practice squad, although Brian St. Pierre is not long on game experience. St. Pierre, who played at Boston College, has appeared in two games and attempted five passes in seven NFL seasons. His previous stops were in Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Arizona. Carolina waived linebacker Sean Ware from the practice squad to make room for St. Pierre. "He's a younger player that's had some playing time (who) we've got some familiarity with on our staff," Panthers coach John Fox said Friday. "It gives us a third quarterback in the building learning our offense." Younger player? St. Pierre turns 31 later this month. "He's not a 14-year vet," said Fox."
Panthers lose RBs Stewart, Sutton and QB Moore to injuries
"They were already bad. Getting hurt didn't help. The Carolina Panthers came into the game with the league's worst offense, and proceeded to lose a quarterback, two running backs and a game, 34-3 to the New Orleans Saints. "We are not really a juggernaut right now," Panthers coach John Fox said. "But to lose two of your three running backs that were active for the day and your starting quarterback, things could go from kind of not so good to really bad." Beyond the injuries, the Panthers were really bad on offense all day long. For much of the game, they challenged the franchise record for fewest net yards in a game — the 113 they gained at Buffalo in their second game as a franchise in"
Both starting running backs might be held out of Sunday's game
"DeAngelo Williams missed his second straight practice Thursday, increasing the likelihood Jonathan Stewart will start Sunday at running back against the St. Louis Rams (3-4). Williams sprained his foot in the final minutes of Carolina's 23-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers and hasn't been on the field since. Williams will be a game-time decision. In three career starts Stewart has been extremely productive, averaging 150.3 rushing yards per game with three rushing touchdowns, including a franchise-record 206-yard performance against the New York Giants last December. Coach John Fox reiterated Thursday that Williams is "day-to-day" and wouldn't elaborate on the injury or"
Stewart could have a chance to jump-start season if Williams doesn't play
"Running back DeAngelo Williams was held out of Wednesday's because of a sprained foot, raising some doubt as to his availability for Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams. Williams injured his foot on the final minutes of Carolina's 23-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, but it's not believed to be serious. Even if Williams doesn't play Sunday, the Panthers should be fine as running back is their deepest position. Jonathan Stewart would start, while Mike Goodson and Tyrell Sutton would work in off the bench. Stewart is off to a rough start this season. Through six games Stewart has just 148 yards and one rushing touchdown and is averaging a mere 4 yards per"
Without pass attack, Carolina Panthers have no place to run
"Watching the Carolina Panthers' tailbacks run into 7- and 8-man fronts at times has been the football equivalent of seeing someone slam his forehead into a wall. The Panthers' run game might be battered and bloodied, but as long as John Fox is still the coach, they're not going to quit trying. "Eventually, you just keep pounding and keep pounding, it will open," tailback Jonathan Stewart said Wednesday. "You keep knocking on the door, and eventually it'll open up." The Panthers hope they might have splintered a crack in the door last weekend when they finally found a downfield passing attack in Week 7. The thinking is that if quarterback Matt Moore can stretch the field as he did against"
Defenders burst Double Trouble's bubble
"In previous years, the Carolina Panthers' tailback tandem of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart inspired a catchy nickname, prompted the launch of a website and established a single-season distinction for a backfield combination. This year the Panthers' rushing attack has produced mostly questions, primarily this one: What's the trouble with Double Trouble? After becoming the first teammates to rush for more than 1,100 yards apiece in 2009, Williams and Stewart won't get to 1,400 yards combined at their current pace. The Panthers have plummeted from third in the NFL in rushing in '09 (156.1 yards per game) to 23rd this season (95.7). Neither Williams nor Stewart has a 100-yard game."
Stewart looking good on the field
"It wasn't much to look at, but this time of year, seeing Jonathan Stewart do anything was a surprise. The Carolina Panthers running back ran a few sets of sideline-to-sideline sprints as practice wrapped up. Coupled with jogging between some tackling dummies earlier in the morning, it marked the most work Stewart's done during a June workout since he was drafted. The talented running back hasn't missed a game as a pro, but he's yet to take his first snap in either a minicamp or organized team activity since he's been here. After he rushed for 1,133 yards and 10 touchdowns last year, that's a trade the Panthers will make, but it appears he's getting closer to being an every-day player."
Jonathan Stewart on mend after surgery, provides in-depth details about his '09 injury problems
"In today's editions of the Observer, Panthers' running back Jonathan Stewart talks in-depth about the Achilles injury that bothered him all last season and the Jan. 20 surgery he hopes will alleviate the pain he played with in 2009. For the first time, Stewart explained that he had a bone spur pressing into his left Achilles and also suffered from tendonitis and bursitis. He wasn't permitted to put weight on his foot for the first month after the operation. For the third consecutive year, he'll miss the Panthers' post-draft minicamp and summer school practices, but expects to begin running in June and to be ready for the start of training camp in late July."
Jonathan Stewart will miss minicamp again
"The two-inch surgical scar just above Jonathan Stewart's left heel looks tiny considering the pain and risk he endured last season. That small area of his 5-foot-10, 235-pound body was a constant nuisance and potential season-ending threat because of a bone spur pressing into his Achilles tendon near its insertion to his heel. He said he also had bursitis and tendonitis. "I literally thought I was going to be playing six games and then have to get surgery. That was some of the talk (between) me and the trainers," Stewart said this week in his first in-depth interview about the injury that caused him to miss the entire 2009 preseason and to sit out at least one practice per week during the"
DeAngelo Williams to the Lions? Carolina's John Fox shoots down that theory
"Several weeks ago, someone made the brilliant observation that the running back-hungry Detroit Lions should call the Carolina Panthers and inquire about the possibility of trading for DeAngelo Williams. It made sense, actually, because if there's a new CBA signed by next year, Williams will become an unrestricted free agent and the Panthers already have running back Jonathan Stewart, who blossomed last season. The Lions, though, never made the phone call and they saved themselves the toll charge. The Panthers have no interest in trading Williams."
Stewart's Achilles surgery successful
"Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart had successful surgery on his left Achilles this morning, treating a problem that had been bothering him for at least a year. Stewart's agent Ben Dogra wouldn't say what the severity of the injury had been and said the surgery was to alleviate "lingering pain" and that Stewart expected to be ready for May's mini-camp. Dogra said Stewart also had minor surgery on a pinky finger Wednesday."
Stewart having foot surgery
"Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart said today on his twitter account that he's undergoing surgery on his foot today. He played last season with ongoing pain in his Achilles, but led the team in rushing with 1,133 yards."
Stewart's record day fuels Panthers' Giant rout
"The unpredictable Carolina Panthers crashed the Giants Stadium going-away party Sunday, scoring their second consecutive blowout win against a favored opponent behind Jonathan Stewart's record-setting rushing performance. Despite being eliminated from the playoffs and facing a New York Giants team playing for its postseason life, the Panthers won 41-9 in perhaps their most impressive showing of the season. It was Carolina's first 40-point outing in almost four seasons, since beating Atlanta 44-11 on Jan.1, 2006. Combined with last week's home victory against Minnesota, the Panthers have won their past two games - both upsets - by a score of 67-16. As a result, Carolina (7-8) has avoided"
Stewart joins Williams in 1,000-yard club
"The Carolina Panthers are ending a lackluster season with an almost stunning display of proficiency against what had looked like a difficult stretch of opponents. In the New York Giants' final regular season game at Giants Stadium, the Panthers stole the show with a 41-9 win that featured a 206yard rushing perforance by Joanthan Stewart. Stewart set a team single-game record for most rushing yards in a game and went over 1,000 yards for the season, making him and DeAngelo Williams the sixth pair of teammates to hit the 1,000-yard mark in the same season. Williams didn't play Sunday because of an ankle injury. He has 1,117 yards and Stewart's season total is up to 1,008 The Panthers scored"
Stewart's ready to run through pain on game day
"It's been a weekly routine this season for Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart to sit out Wednesday practices. He's on the injury report each week with a sore Achilles that's been bothering him for close to a year. When the Panthers picked him 13th overall in the 2008 draft, he was recovering from toe surgery. It's perceived locally and around the NFL that he's rarely healthy and is injury-prone. There's a flaw in that concept, however: Of the five running backs selected in the first round of the '08 draft, Stewart is the only one who's never missed a game. That's right, though he's missed practices aplenty, especially during minicamps, summer school and training camp, Stewart"
Panther RBs miss practice
"Three Panthers running backs -- DeAngelo Williams (ankle), Jonathan Stewart (Achilles) and Tyrell Sutton (calf) missed Wednesday's practice. They were joined on the sidelines by quarterback Jake Delhomme (finger) and cornerback Richard Marshall (ankle). That left rookie Mike Goodson as the only running back at practice, although fullbacks Brad Hoover and Tony Fiammetta were out there. Stewart routinely doesn't practice on Wednesdays. Williams left Sunday's game against Minnesota in the first half after apparently re-injuring the same ankle that kept him out of the Panthers' game against Tampa Bay on Dec. 6."
DeAngelo WIlliams out for Panthers
"The Panthers are significantly depleted by injuries on both sides of the ball for today's game against Tampa Bay. Offensively, the Panthers are hit hard at the skill positions. Matt Moore is getting his first start of the season at quarterback with Jake Delhomme out with a broken finger. Fans who have clamored for Moore for weeks now get what they want. It'll be interesting to see whether his play lives up to the expectations. Jonathan Stewart starts at running back with DeAngelo WIlliams out. Tyrell Sutton also is expected to get carries and possibly Mike Goodson. With No. 3 wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett out, Charly Martin likely will get playing time behind Steve Smith and Muhsin"
Panthers' Stewart, Williams questionable for Thursday
"Carolina Panthers running backs Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams are both listed as questionable for Thursday's matchup against the Miami Dolphins. Stewart (achilles) missed practice on Monday and Tuesday before practicing in full on Wednesday. Williams (knee) showed up on the injury report Wednesday as a non-participant in practice. Williams has rushed for 860 yards and seven TDs on 168 carries in nine games this year for the 4-5 Panthers. Stewart has carried the ball 98 times for 466 yards and six touchdowns this season."
Bills facing 'Double Trouble' this afternoon
"The Buffalo Bills' defense gets a chance today to prove the validity of the cliche, "There are lies, damned lies and statistics." The Bills rank last in the NFL in run defense, allowing 182 yards a game. Are they really that bad? The Carolina Panthers will be determined to find out when the two teams meet at Bank of America Stadium. Carolina ranked third in rushing last season, stands eighth this season and boasts one of the best tailback combinations in the league in DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. "They've got a really good offensive line, and their running backs have great vision," said Bills linebacker Keith Ellison. "They're able to find the crack in the defense." Both teams"
Tendon injury makes Stewart a spectator
"For the second straight offseason, Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart missed most of the significant on-field work at minicamp and summer school. This time the injury - considered mild - involves his left Achilles' tendon. Last season as a rookie he was recovering from toe surgery. Stewart has been at practice, but mostly just listening to the play calls and watching other running backs take his turn. That has caused some teasing among his teammates. "They're out there busting their butts and I'm just sitting on the sideline for the second year in a row," Stewart said. "I've been taking some heat for that." He said he didn't need surgery, but was supposed to rest the tendon"
Stewart, Panthers win again
"Jonathan Stewart continued his strong rookie season for the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. The running back from Oregon scored the go-ahead touchdown in the second quarter as the Panthers beat visiting Denver 30-10. Stewart hit paydirt from two yards to lift Carolina (10-4) into a 17-10 lead. Stewart finished with 52 yards on 16 carries. Denver fell to 8-6. • Pittsburgh went to Baltimore and pulled out another last-minute victory 13-9 in their AFC North showdown. Linebacker Troy Polamalu from Winston, Or., had two tackles for the Steelers, who improved to 11-3. Haloti Ngata, the defensive tackle from Oregon, had three tackles and two assists for Baltimore, which fell to 9-5. Santonio Holmes"
Tampa Bay tag-teamed by Carolina
"DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart took turns. After Stewart scored, Williams would wait on the sideline like an impatient parent beneath the porch light. He'd congratulate the other players as they left the field, but it was Stewart he wanted, and when the rookie finally arrived, they'd do a choreographed dance. When Williams scored, Stewart would wait. A quarterback, a fullback, receivers and linemen would pass. But Stewart didn't move until Williams joined him, and they'd do another rehearsed dance. They were running out of dances Monday night at Bank of America Stadium. Tampa Bay, which had given up only one rushing touchdown in 12 games, gave up two to Williams and two to Stewart."
Stewart's sure TD run turns into costly fumble
"As the goal line approached - and nearing the end of what appeared to be a 48-yard touchdown run in the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field -- Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart felt both his hamstrings begin to cramp up. Then, Stewart began to slow. Then, Packers safety Rod Woodson swooped in from behind, tackling Stewart and knocking the ball from his hands. Luckily for Stewart, Panthers offensive guard Travelle Wharton, who had already made the key block upfield that sprang him, stayed with the play. He pounced on the ball at the Packers 2. Three plays later, quarterback Jake Delhomme scored from 1 yard and the Panthers had a 14-3"
Stewart might miss Sunday's game with heel injury
"Carolina Panthers rookie running back Jonathan Stewart may not play Sunday against the Oakland Raiders after missing his second straight day of practice on Thursday with a heel injury. Stewart was wearing a walking boot on his left foot Thursday. "The medical people said he wouldn't be able to go today," coach John Fox said after practice. "It's day to day and we'll evaluate it tomorrow, but anytime you don't have a guy out there it's always concerning." Stewart said the heel began bothering him during Carolina's 27-23 win over Arizona on Oct. 26, a game in which he was held to just 10 yards on eight carries. He described the heel as "sore." "It's a sharp pain in my heel," Stewart said. "I"
Heel keeps Stewart out of practice
"Carolina Panthers rookie running back Jonathan Stewart didn't practice Wednesday because of a heel injury. Coach John Fox wouldn't speculate on Stewart's availability for Sunday's game in Oakland. But DeAngelo Williams, the team's starting running back, thinks Stewart will be OK. "It was a precautionary thing," said Williams. "I don't think he's hurt." Williams said having Stewart, who leads the team with five rushing touchdowns, is important. "It makes a huge difference," said Williams. "He hasn't missed a game thus far. I'm not a trainer, but they do a great job getting us back on the field. I don't think he'll miss time." Starting offensive linemen Jeff Otah and Ryan Kalil, who have"
Stewart Charlotte's new rock star
"Jonathan Stewart makes only one mistake. After the game, he stands in the locker of practice squad player Billy Latsko. Nobody stands in the locker of Billy Latsko. On the field, Stewart is impeccable. After running one time for one yard in the first half, he runs 13 times for 76 in the second. He scores two touchdowns. He has no room on the second touchdown, a one-yard run that pushes Carolina to its first lead. If he hits the hole fast, he also will hit Chicago middle linebacker Brian Urlacher. So Stewart waits, which is so difficult so close to the goal line, especially for a rookie. And then there is room and then, with fewer than four minutes remaining, there's the touchdown. The"
Jonathan Stewart Q
"Excerpts from Observer staff writer Charles Chandler's interview this week with the Panthers' rookie running back: Q: How comfortable are you with the offense? I think I've grasped pretty much a big large sum of what's going on. There are still a couple of things, especially as we're game-planning on different teams, kind of acknowledging each team's personality as a defense. Today, there was a blitz pickup (in practice) where I was kind of asking Jake (Delhomme) what he called so I could kind of get some feedback from him and put it all together for myself so I could watch film and have it all fit together and make sense totally. Q: You wept when you got the call from the Panthers on"
Panthers unveil one-two punch
"Jordan Gross was happy enough with any role he had in helping spring rookie Jonathan Stewart for a 50-yard touchdown run in the Carolina Panthers' 47-3 pounding of the Washington Redskins in an NFL exhibition Saturday at Bank of America Stadium. "I knew he had that in him," Gross, the Panthers' left offensive tackle, said of Stewart, a first-round draft choice brought in to reinvigorate Carolina's running game. But when DeAngelo Williams did Stewart one better - busting loose for a 60-yard scoring run - just a few minutes later, Gross started to really enjoy himself. "The thing I liked most was the next series, DeAngelo came back and hit one of his own," said Gross. "It was fun to be a"
Stewart might get chance to return kicks
"With Ryne Robinson still recovering from a leg injury and no apparent replacement in sight as the Carolina Panthers' kick returner, coach John Fox might be thinking about giving rookie Jonathan Stewart a try. Fox wouldn't say whether that might come in the Panthers' final exhibition Thursday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. "I can't put a time frame on it," said Fox. "(Stewart) was healthy enough to do it (Saturday against the Washington Redskins), but we just didn't feel it, so we'll wait and see." Ricardo Colclough was solid, if not spectacular, against the Redskins, returning two kickoffs for a 30.5 average, with a long return of 37 yards. "We're a little nicked there," said Fox. "I"
