Jimmy Clausen News & Rumors

Panthers QB Clausen's time might not be done yet
"The Panthers would owe No. 3 quarterback Jimmy Clausen $923,000 if he's still on the roster next month - a hefty sum for a player who was inactive for every game last season. But coach Ron Rivera did not close the door on a Clausen return, saying he appreciated how the former Notre Dame quarterback handled himself last year after he lost his starting job to No. 1 pick and NFL Rookie of the Year Cam Newton. "Everybody's got to compete. That's just the way it is," Rivera said Thursday at the NFL scouting combine. "Jimmy knows our philosophy and how we are. For what we did last year and what we asked of Jimmy, I thought he handled the situation very well. He's most certainly a guy that's in"
Don't count Clausen out yet
"Sometimes it is easy to forget Jimmy Clausen is still around. It was only a year ago that Clausen was the rookie quarterback that Carolina Panther fans were excited about in the preseason. Now he has been elbowed out of the way by "Cam Mania" and serves as the Panthers' No. 2 quarterback, both literally and figuratively, to rookie Cam Newton. Newton grabs every headline. Every picture. Every TV clip. Our newspaper is as guilty as anyone - I'm as guilty as anyone - of writing about him incessantly. Somehow we missed working Cam into our Hurricane Irene coverage. Yet Clausen hasn't gone anywhere. He will likely play a good bit in the Panthers' final exhibition against Pittsburgh Thursday"
Rivera: QB plan not speeding up
"Coach Ron Rivera reiterated Monday night that he expects to have a clearer idea of who the Carolina Panthers' starting quarterback will be as they prepare for their third exhibition Aug. 25 at Cincinnati. Nothing changed in the way Jimmy Clausen and Cam Newton rotated repetitions during practice Monday night, and Rivera indicated he doesn't expect to deviate from the practice plans in preparing for a Friday night game at Miami. "It's all the same. We're going to continue to do that until we make that decision," Rivera said."
Clausen optimistic about faster offense
"The last time Jimmy Clausen faced the New York Giants was Week 1 last year, when the rookie from Notre Dame came in late in the fourth quarter with the Panthers at their 2 yard line after starting quarterback Matt Moore was injured. Clausen did well just to avoid a safety on his first NFL snaps. Running for his life, Clausen threw two incompletions before the Panthers punted and the Giants ran out the clock in their 31-18 win. Things never got better for the Panthers or Clausen, who lost nine of his 10 starts for a team that finished an NFL-worst 2-14. Much has changed since that September day in the Meadowlands. John Fox is gone, replaced by Ron Rivera, a longtime defensive assistant who"
Clausen gets nod over Newton - for now
"Jimmy Clausen was booed at Fan Fest last week after throwing his first pass of the afternoon out of bounds. You know how it works. You pay your money and boo anybody you feel like. Of course, Fan Fest was free. And on the drive Clausen did lead the first-team offense to a touchdown. But Clausen is a piece of Carolina's dysfunctional past. The Panthers went 1-9 when he started last season and 1-5 when he did not. As bad as the record was, the season was worse. John Fox always had won at least seven games as an NFL head coach and assistant, and even as the season slipped away, his goal was to attain 7-9. The slogan never caught on with the marketing folks. Team owner Jerry Richardson"
Clausen to start at QB vs. Giants
"As expected, Jimmy Clausen will start the Panthers' preseason opener against the New York Giants. Clausen said coach Ron Rivera told him he would get the nod Saturday over No. 1 overall draft pick Cam Newton, who is expected to get plenty of work against the Giants. Clausen has been getting the bulk of the first-team reps throughout training camp, so this was not a surprise. Rivera has said more than once that Newton would not be handed anything. Clausen laughed when asked about the last time he faced the Giants. In a Week 1 loss at the Meadowlands last year, Clausen made his NFL debut when he was thrown into the game at the Panthers' 2-yard line after Matt Moore left with an injury."
Start with Clausen and some pizzazz
"If I'm Panthers coach Ron Rivera, I start Jimmy Clausen Saturday night in the Panthers' first preseason game against the New York Giants. You don't want to hand everything to Cam Newton right away; and Clausen has been the more consistent player for much of training camp. Ultimately, Newton will be the better player, but he must earn the job. I would start Clausen, let him play the first few series with the first-team offense, and then let Newton in there to see what he can do with the second-stringers (but behind the first-team offensive line - you have got to protect your assets). In the Panthers' second exhibition, I might flip-flop that and let Newton play with the first team in the"
Clausen concentrates on position, ignores the rest
"Jimmy Clausen was on the 19th hole, watching TV and having dinner with friends from Charlotte after a round of golf, when Roger Goodell stepped to the podium with an announcement that would impact Clausen's world. With the first pick in the 2011 draft, the Carolina Panthers had selected Auburn quarterback Cam Newton. From that moment, it has been widely assumed that Clausen's future as a starting quarterback will happen somewhere other than Charlotte. Clausen started 10 games as a rookie in 2010, going 1-9 and finishing with the league's lowest quarterback rating behind a patchwork offensive line. He was the Panthers' quarterback of the future until they drafted another one in April."
Panthers Training Camp: Clausen looks sharp
"In taking questions from fans for about 45 minutes Wednesday afternoon before the Carolina Panthers' practice at Wofford, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed a number of issues. Among the highlights: Goodell said he thinks it is possible that London could land an NFL franchise in the next decade; He said an 18-game regular season "could happen" during the 10-year period covered by the new collective bargaining agreement; When asked if there could be a Super Bowl played in the Carolinas, Goodell didn't entirely rule it out, saying: "Super Bowl in Carolina? That's a good one. "The owners have so much respect for (team owner Jerry) Richardson that it wouldn't surprise me, but hosting a"
Panthers QBs need to decide who will wear No. 2
"Jersey numbers in football are a big deal, both to players and to fans. Unlike most sports, the numbers are so large (12 inches exactly on the back of the Panthers' official jerseys, 10 on the front) that coaches frequently refer to players by numbers rather than names. Fans wear replica jerseys to games in huge numbers, which translates into major cash for a lot of people. So the Cam Newton/Jimmy Clausen "Who will wear No. 2?" question, while seemingly minor, is one that echoes in a lot of hills. If I'm Newton, I forget about No. 2 and figure out another plan, which I'll explain later. First, to bring you up to date: Clausen wore No. 2 as a rookie last season for Carolina. Newton wore No."
Panthers quarterback Clausen focused on future
"Jimmy Clausen isn't going away. Not yet anyway. Last night the Panthers' second-year quarterback was on ESPN's Sunday Conversation on SportsCenter with Colleen Dominguez. Clausen, as is his custom, stayed away from anything controversial during the interview. Despite being thrown to the fire as a rookie (1-9 as a starter) behind an injured line with a receiving corps featuring two rookies, Clausen expressed no regrets about being forced into the lineup after Matt Moore struggled and later was lost with a season-ending shoulder injury. "Under those circumstances we were in last year, the coaches needed me to go out and play and try to go out and do everything I could to help the team win."
Clausen isn't ready to give up number, job
"Jimmy Clausen and Cam Newton took the field together for the first time Saturday at a charity kickball game - and both were wearing No.2. Newton, the Auburn quarterback drafted No.1 overall by the Panthers, wants Clausen's jersey number - not to mention his job. And while Clausen has been gracious in welcoming Newton via Twitter and a personal text message, the second-year quarterback from Notre Dame indicated he's not planning to simply hand over his number or his position. Newton wore No.2 at Auburn and said Friday he'd like to keep it. He might have to set aside some bonus money for it. "It's mine right now," Clausen said of the No.2 jersey. "We'll see what happens." Has Clausen set an"
Rivera doesn't give Clausen endorsement at annual owners meetings
"For more than an hour Tuesday morning, Panthers coach Ron Rivera talked a lot about quarterbacks – ones the Panthers might draft, ones the Panthers could get in a trade. Finally, he fielded a question about a quarterback currently on the Panthers' roster – one who was generating his own buzz this time a year ago before a dreadful rookie season. And Rivera said Jimmy Clausen received too much of the blame for a 2-14 season that gave the Panthers the No. 1 pick this year. "I tried to listen to as many people and tried to figure out what had happened. Tried to watch as much tape and really take everything that was said to me, and evaluate it and decide what I believed. What I agreed with,"
Clausen not worried whether Luck will be on his side
"Jimmy Clausen has a busy offseason planned. Clausen will return to Notre Dame next month to finish his sociology degree. He is scheduled to have his injured right foot examined, and he'll spend some time at home in California preparing for his second NFL season. But one thing the Carolina Panthers quarterback will not do during the offseason is follow the Andrew Luck obsession that has gripped Charlotte since it first appeared the Panthers had a bead on the No. 1 selection in next year's draft. Carolina (2-13) clinched the top pick last weekend, but Clausen claims he will not worry about whether the Panthers target Luck, Stanford's third-year quarterback who has until Jan. 15 to declare"

Pittsburgh stunts Clausen's growth
"After a small step forward last week against Arizona, Jimmy Clausen took another step back. And as the sacks, incompletions and losses continue to mount for the Carolina Panthers' rookie quarterback, the question is how far this lost season is going to set back Clausen's career. Clausen completed 10 of 23 passes for 72 yards Thursday night in the 27-3 loss at Pittsburgh. He threw an interception, was sacked four times and his longest completion was a short swing pass that tailback Mike Goodson took for 15 yards. Remarkably, Clausen's 33.2 passer rating was only his third-lowest this season - a sobering statistic for Clausen, who was the first player taken by the Panthers in this year's"
Clausen thankful for first victory as NFL starting quarterback
"Jimmy Clausen became the eighth Carolina Panthers' quarterback in the franchise's 16-year history to get a victory in Sunday's 19-12 win over the Arizona Cardinals. So what did he do to celebrate? And, better yet, what does he get as a reward? Well, after taking a snap for the final kneel down of the victory, Clausen casually flipped the football to game referee Tony Corrente. And his reward? "It's going to be a quick turnaround for sure," Clausen said of preparing for Thursday's NFL TV network game at Pittsburgh. "I'll probably watch some tape tonight on the Steelers to get ready for the game." Such is the life of a NFL quarterback, particularly one who hopes he can convince"
Jimmy Clausen, Carolina Panthers shut down Arizona Cardinals
"In a Saturday night speech to his players, Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt emphasized that one big play could act as a defibrillator for a whole team, shocking it into rhythm. On Sunday, however, the Cardinals showed again they prefer to keep sticking their fingers in light sockets. They didn't make every mistake in the book, just the ones in the first six chapters, on the way to a 19-12 loss to the woeful Panthers. Inaccurate passes. Dropped balls. Costly penalties. Poor run defense. Failed onside kicks. All contributed to the team's eighth loss in its past nine games. "Seemed like every time we had a chance to do something, we made mistakes," Whisenhunt said. "I think our guys were"
Clausen finally gets win under his belt
"John Fox wasn't the only one who was able to take a bow. Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen turned in his most efficient performance of the season Sunday, taking care of the ball and shepherding his side to a 19-12 win against the Arizona Cardinals in the home finale at Bank of America Stadium. Clausen was a clean 13-of-19 for 141 yards and a touchdown. His second-quarter touchdown pass to tight end Jeff King was his second of the season, and first since Oct. 3, covering a span of 202 passes. During that time, he threw five interceptions, including two which were returned for touchdowns. But the most important number was one, as in wins, since it was his first after a few"
No apology necessary from Clausen
"It's amazing what a win can do for your confidence. Ask Jimmy Clausen. Before Sunday's 19-12 victory over Arizona, the Panthers' rookie quarterback had started seven NFL games and lost all of them. He had thrown more touchdowns to opponents (two interceptions returned for scores) than his own team. Yet, there was Clausen after the game at Bank of America Stadium offering advice and words of encouragement to Cardinals rookie QB John Skelton, a former star at FCS-member Fordham who made his second start Sunday. Asked if he could relate with Skelton, Clausen said: "Definitely. That's what I told him after the game. I said, 'Everything will slow down for you. Just give it some time. Just keep"
Fox: Clausen will remain Panthers QB
"John Fox has three games left as the coach of the Carolina Panthers - and he plans to start Jimmy Clausen at quarterback in each of them. Despite Clausen's ongoing struggles and sagging confidence, Fox is sticking with the rookie from Notre Dame as the Panthers (1-12) try to snap a seven-game losing streak Sunday against Arizona. Clausen threw an interception and took a sack on a key fourth-down play in a 31-10 defeat to Atlanta last weekend. The loss dropped Clausen's record to 0-7 as a starter. "I don't think our struggles either (against Atlanta) or up to date have been all the quarterback position, because we've fielded a few of them," Fox said Monday. "We won't announce starters. But"
Reality bites Clausen
"For weeks, I've resisted the temptation to jump to conclusions about Carolina Panther quarterback Jimmy Clausen. Today, though, I'm jumping. Clausen is a good guy. A tough guy. A "try-hard" guy. But he's absolutely the wrong guy to lead this Panther team beyond this season. The Panthers must draft a quarterback in the first round of the 2011 draft - ideally Stanford's Andrew Luck, but if that can't happen, maybe Auburn's Cam Newton or Arkansas's Ryan Mallett. And they should sign a veteran free-agent quarterback, too, as insurance or to possibly take the job for a year while the new rookie watches. The Panthers just can't start Clausen, their second-round pick in April out of Notre Dame."
Air attack falters as Carolina Panthers fall to 1-12
"After another loss in which he threw more interceptions than touchdowns, Carolina Panthers quarterback Jimmy Clausen walked the length of the locker room to apologize to linebacker Jon Beason for his poor performance. A few minutes later, one of the Panthers' veterans wondered aloud whether the rookie also should have apologized to his offensive teammates Sunday after Carolina's 31-10 loss to NFC South-leading Atlanta at a half-empty Bank of America Stadium. "I'm the last guy to tell anybody to be apologizing. But if you're going to apologize, you should apologize to people that's in the huddle with you," receiver Steve Smith said. "But he has a lot to learn. He ain't at Notre Dame"
Panthers need much more next season than a quarterback
"As you might have noticed, the Carolina Panthers need a little work before they take the field next year. As you might not have noticed, those problems transcend the quarterback position, though that's where most of the focus is now and will be until the draft this spring. Before any offseason moves are made, there's the small matter of reaching a collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players Association. Once that happens, general manager Marty Hurney has 28 expiring contracts to deal with, including linebacker Thomas Davis, center Ryan Kalil, defensive end Charles Johnson and running back DeAngelo Williams. If they can keep or get something in return for those four,"
No Luck will be necessary with a few wins, Clausen says
"Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen on Wednesday shrugged off the increasing talk about the possibility of Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck coming to Charlotte as the first pick if he enters the 2011 NFL draft. If he can coax a few wins out of the last month of the season, Clausen said he could effectively buy himself some job security. When asked if it was up to him to win enough games to keep the Panthers (1-11) from getting the top pick in the draft, Clausen grinned. "I'm trying to do everything I can to do that," he said. "I'm trying to do everything I can to get us a victory, and that's the only thing I can control is going out each day, trying to get better, get the"
Clausen can rise above rough rookie year
"Carolina Panthers quarterback Jimmy Clausen has now thrown more touchdowns to opponents than to his own team, and hasn't won a start yet. But Panthers coach John Fox, who has witnessed first-hand the damage that kind of sustained failure can cause, said he didn't think Clausen was so fragile that it was doing long-term damage. "I don't think so," Fox said. "I think there's some pretty successful guys that had some pretty (inauspicious) starts in the National Football League. Troy Aikman comes to mind. I'm sure there are some other guys. You're going to have setbacks in this league. Sometimes those are set-ups for better things to come." It wasn't for Chris Weinke, who went 1-14 as the"
Is Clausen running out of time, Luck?
"The best quarterback in the first half was not 35-year-old Matt Hasselbeck, who five times has lead Seattle to the playoffs and played in three Pro Bowls and one Super Bowl. The best quarterback was Carolina's Jimmy Clausen. Clausen led the Panthers on touchdown drives of 61 and 79 yards, and to a 14-3 lead. The rookie was as good as he had to be, completing nine of 15 passes for 108 yards, taking one sack and avoiding any semblance of a turnover. Clausen's progress was evident last week against Cleveland. But he still was Young Jimmy. At Qwest Field Sunday he played like an adult. He ran the offense like a point guard. He threw a perfect pass to Steve Smith for 39 yards. Under pressure,"
Panthers' Clausen might play
"The Browns are 3-7 despite a bevy of quarterback injuries but still appear to at least be a step or two ahead of the 1-9 Carolina Panthers. When the Panthers play at Cleveland Browns Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m., Panthers rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen is hoping to come back from a concussion suffered Nov. 14 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It would be best if Clausen can play, considering starter Matt Moore is out for the season with a right shoulder injury and backup Brian St. Pierre's back is aching after throwing more than he had in nearly a year during Sunday's 37-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Had the Panthers practiced Monday, St. Pierre would not have been able to play after he"
Jury is still out on rookies Clausen and McCoy
"The Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns should know Wednesday whether Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy can play Sunday when the teams meet in Cleveland. It's the long-term outlook of the rookie quarterbacks that is the more critical issue for both teams. Clausen and McCoy were the quarterback bridesmaids in April's draft to Sam Bradford, the tall right-hander from Oklahoma who went to St. Louis with the first overall pick. While Bradford has started all 10 games for the Rams, Clausen and McCoy also have seen plenty of playing time - with mixed results. Clausen is 0-4 as a starter and had the NFL's worst passer rating before missing last week's game against Baltimore with a concussion."
Panthers await clearance for Clausen to play
"You could get the sense from listening to Carolina Panthers coach John Fox on Monday that he'd prefer to start Jimmy Clausen at quarterback Sunday at Cleveland. But the way this season has gone, he's not going to lock into anything. Clausen, who suffered a concussion on the last play Nov.14 at Tampa Bay, will have to be cleared by the medical staff and independent doctors before he can return to action. While stopping short of a full-blown endorsement, Fox indicated the job was Clausen's if he was well. "If he's cleared, that's probably more than likely," Fox said. "If he can stay cleared." Clausen didn't talk to reporters Monday, sending word through a team official that until he met with"
Panthers' QB Jimmy Clausen optimistic he can go Sunday
"Sunday's loss didn't hurt Jimmy Clausen as much as the previous week's defeat at Tampa Bay - physically, anyway. Clausen was on the sideline for Carolina's 37-13 loss to Baltimore - a week after the Carolina Panthers' rookie quarterback sustained a concussion on the final play against the Buccaneers. Clausen developed headaches after the game that worsened during the Panthers' trip home from Florida. He has not yet been cleared to play and said he is scheduled to meet with the doctor again Tuesday or Wednesday. "I'm feeling a lot better than I did last week," Clausen said in the locker room. "I'm just trying to keep resting as much as I can to hopefully get back to play next week." Clausen"
Clausen may have gotten concussion on late QB sneak
"The hits on the Carolina Panthers' quarterbacks keep coming. A week after Matt Moore sustained a season-ending shoulder injury, Jimmy Clausen is dealing with post-concussion symptoms following Sunday's 31-16 loss at Tampa Bay. Panthers coach John Fox said the injury might have occurred on a controversial play at the end of the game. After the Buccaneers stood up Clausen on fourth-and-goal from the 1, Tampa Bay cornerback Aqib Talib ran into the pile and hit Clausen high. Carolina receiver Steve Smith retaliated by drilling Talib, drawing an unnecessary roughness penalty. "Could have been any number of plays, but there's a chance it could have happened on the last play," Fox said Monday."
Clausen has concussion; status uncertain
"The Carolina Panthers have another injured quarterback. Panthers coach John Fox said Jimmy Clausen sustained a concussion during Sunday's 31-16 loss at Tampa Bay, and indicated the injury might have occurred when Bucs cornerback Aqib Talib dove headfirst into the pile on Clausen's quarterback sneak in the final seconds. "It's hard to say. Could have been any number of plays, but there's a chance it could have happened on the last play," Fox said Monday. Fox, who did not mention Clausen among the Panthers' injured players after the game, said the symptoms developed later. "A bunch of people talked to him even after the game," Fox said. "It was something that came on as the post-game wore"
QB Clausen, RB Goodson to start Sunday against Buccaneers
"The Carolina Panthers will look a whole lot different on offense Sunday when they visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Coach John Fox named Jimmy Clausen the team's starting quarterback, while Mike Goodson will make his first career start at running back. "I didn't have a lot of doubts about that earlier this week," Fox said of starting Clausen over Tony Pike. "But we wanted to get the guys out here practicing, see how they went about their business and I thought Jimmy had an outstanding day." Clausen was thrilled over the news and believes he's up to the task. He lost his previous three starts for the Panthers and has thrown only one touchdown and four interceptions on the season,"
QB Moore, RB Stewart, three others leave game with injuries
"The Carolina Panthers left Sunday's game pretty beaten up and we're not just talking about the score. Five key players left the game with injuries and did not return – QB Matt Moore (shoulder), RBs Jonathan Stewart (shoulder) and Tyrell Sutton (ankle), LB Dan Connor (hip) and DE Greg Hardy (head). Coach John Fox offered no update on the extent of the injuries at his post-game press conference. Moore left the game with 12 minutes left in the second quarter when Saints DT Sedrick Ellis sacked him and drove his shoulder into the turf. Stewart, who was starting for the injured DeAngelo Williams, took a devastating blow to the head from Saints FS Darren Sharper. That leaves the"
The Clausen job interview starts now
"The worse Carolina plays, the higher they pick in the 2011 NFL draft. Unless they become shockingly successful, they'll have an opportunity to pick an elite quarterback - Andrew Luck of Stanford or Jake Locker of Washington. Unless the Panthers believe their long-term quarterback is on the roster, they almost have to take Luck or Locker. The value of a potentially elite quarterback is incalculable. If the Panthers had one this season they'd be contending for the playoffs. Matt Moore will not be their long-term quarterback. Rookie Jimmy Clausen might be. But if he doesn't play regularly, the Panthers won't know. After Carolina's humiliating 34-3 loss to New Orleans Sunday, I ask head coach"
Fox will stick with Moore next week against New Orleans
"Don't expect another quarterback change this week for the Carolina Panthers despite Matt Moore's three interceptions Sunday against the St. Louis Rams. "Right now Matt gives us our best chance," coach John Fox said after the game when asked who'll start Sunday against New Orleans. "We will evaluate it once we look at the tape and do something to get better and execute more consistently on offense. Like I said, we had progress last week. Not that it was outstanding, but better than today." Moore finished 23 of 37 for 194 yards with one touchdown and three picks, giving him 10 for the season. He called his afternoon "frustrating." Normally pretty even-keeled, Moore showed some"
Clausen, Bradford stay in touch
"The last time Panthers quarterback Jimmy Clausen was in St. Louis, the Rams were trying to figure out which quarterback they wanted with the first pick in the draft. When Clausen returns this weekend, he plans to get together with the quarterback the Rams wound up taking. Clausen spoke with Sam Bradford this week and hopes to see him Saturday after the Panthers arrive. The two have remained in contact, often via text messages, since meeting at the NFL Combine in February. Bradford was the first player selected. Clausen went in the second round as the 48th overall pick. Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo was impressed with Clausen during their meetings. "I thought he was a terrific player. I still"
Clausen not the only one benched on offense
"Quarterback isn't the only change in store for the Carolina Panthers offense this week. Mackenzy Bernadeau, who has started the last five games at right guard, told reporters on Thursday that he's been benched for Sunday's game against San Francisco. Geoff Schwartz will move inside to Bernadeau's former spot, while second-year pro Garry Williams will make his first NFL start at right tackle. The move essentially sets the stage for Jeff Otah's return, as the Panthers were expected to move Schwartz inside to guard once Otah returned to the lineup to give them more size up front. "It's a move they decided to make trying to put the best players on the field," Bernadeau said."
Smith can relate to Clausen's struggles
"Alex Smith can relate to what Jimmy Clausen is going through -- and then some. Smith was a former No. 1 pick in the NFL draft and has been benched, booed and berated since joining the San Francisco 49ers. But he's managed to persevere and regain his starting job, although his grasp on the job might be tenuous at best following a 1-5 start. Last Sunday he was booed at home after the 49ers fell behind early and fans began chanting for backup quarterback David Carr. "It's part of the game and you have to deal with it," Smith said. "As a quarterback you get judged on wins and losses and when your 0-5 you have to respect that. For the most part I think all quarterbacks or anyone would"
Clausen handling demotion with class
"Jimmy Clausen may not be happy about it, but the rookie is dealing with his demotion like a professional. "Obviously I'm disappointed in the decision, but at the end of the day that's the coach's decision and I'm for whatever they think is best for the team," said Clausen, who was 0-3 as the team's starter. Clausen said he was told the Panthers want to go with Matt Moore at quarterback because he has more playing experience, which reiterates what coach John Fox said Wednesday in his first public statement since making the change. When asked if he regrets making the sudden switch to Clausen in Week 3, Fox said, "No, but it didn't help much. We were 0-2 when we made the last switch."
Panthers say they'll start Moore
"Matt Moore has always played his best football when seasons seemed hopeless. Now he gets another chance this year, as the 0-5 Carolina Panthers have made their second quarterback change of the young season. Panthers coach John Fox announced through a team spokesman that Moore would start this week against San Francisco, moving rookie Jimmy Clausen back to the bench. "We have struggled on offense since the beginning of the season," Fox's statement read. "Sometimes it helps to step back and watch, and Matt has had a chance to do that." Moore spent the entire offseason as the Panthers starter, but was pulled after just two games. He did commit six turnovers in those losses to the New York"

Panthers bench Clausen
"The Carolina Panthers have decided to make a change at quarterback for Sunday's game, benching Jimmy Clausen in favor or Matt Moore. "We have struggled on offense since the beginning of the season and sometimes it helps to step back and watch and Matt has had a chance to do that," coach John Fox said in a statement released through the team."
Clausen familiar with slow 0-5 starts
"Jimmy Clausen knows what it's like to endure a five-game losing streak after coming to a new program hailed as the savior. Clausen's NFL career with the Carolina Panthers has started eerily similar to the way his college career did at Notre Dame. In both cases, Clausen replaced an ineffective starter early on in the season and in both cases the teams dug themselves an 0-5 hole. In 2007, the Fighting Irish snapped the streak with an upset win over then-25th-ranked UCLA in Week 6, but still finished with nine losses, the most in the school's storied history. "I've been in this situation before," Clausen said. "All of high school I never lost a game and to start off 0-5 at Notre Dame"
Clausen's first year in pros, college both had 0-5 starts
"Football experts have talked at length about how Notre Dame helped prepare Jimmy Clausen for the NFL. Clausen's freshman year at Notre Dame also prepared him for losing - something the rookie is experiencing again as the starting quarterback for the 0-5 Carolina Panthers. For a player who did not lose a game in high school, the losses are beginning to pile up for Clausen, who got a reprieve during the Panthers' bye week. Clausen, 23, does not accept losing. But the Fighting Irish's struggles in 2007 - they also started 0-5 - have made Clausen better equipped for dealing with adversity. "To start off 0-5 my freshman year at Notre Dame, that was pretty tough," Clausen said this week. "I've"
Agent: Kiper inflated Clausen's rating
"There were no Panthers - current or former - named in the Sports Illustrated tell-all article by sports agent Josh Luchs, who admitted paying dozens of college football players over the past 20 years. But during Luchs' appearance on Dan Patrick's radio show Wednesday, Panthers quarterback Jimmy Clausen's name was pulled into the conversation. Luchs used to work for Gary Wichard, the California-based agent whose relationship with former North Carolina assistant John Blake has come under NCAA scrutiny.
