Greg Maddux News

Braves to retire Maddux's number
"Future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux spent some of his greatest seasons in a Braves uniform, and as a tribute to his amazing 11-year run in Atlanta, Maddux's No. 31 will be retired by the franchise this summer. Maddux will be inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame on July 17 and his number will be retired during an on-field ceremony prior to a game against the Mets. Maddux joins Dale Murphy (No. 3), Warren Spahn (21), Phil Niekro (35), Eddie Mathews (41) and Hank Aaron (44) as the sixth Braves player to have his number retired. The No. 42 has also been retired throughout Major League Baseball as a tribute to Jackie Robinson. "It's exciting," Maddux told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "You ..."
'Professor' will return to Padres as a spring training instructor
"Coming off a 63-99 season, the Padres have slashed their payroll by some 40 percent and now are the consensus pick to finish last in the National League West a second consecutive year. Being smarter than their opponents would be a good idea, since the Padres probably aren't going to be as talented - and Monday the club gained some baseball IQ points when it announced that Greg Maddux will join the team this week as a spring training instructor. Maddux, known as "the professor," pitched for the Padres in 2007 and until he was traded to the Dodgers last August. A 355-game winner, four-time Cy Young Award winner and future Hall of Famer, Maddux announced his retirement in December. The Cubs ..."
Former Brave Maddux retires
"He walked and talked in the most unassuming manner, always acting as if he were just any old Greg. But the common-man demeanor stood in stark contrast to the sheer brilliance and impeccable precision that Greg Maddux produced on a pitching mound. Maddux, among the most popular players the Atlanta Braves have had, announced his retirement Monday here in his hometown of Las Vegas, ending a remarkable 23-year career that established "Mad Dog" as one the greatest pitchers in baseball history. "He was unbelievable, the greatest control of any pitcher probably in the history of baseball," former Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone said of Maddux, 42, who won four Cy Young Awards and ranks eighth ..."
Maddux Retires After 23 Seasons and 355 Wins
"Here is all you need to know about the esteem in which Greg Maddux is held in major league baseball: when he announced his retirement Monday in a conference room at the Bellagio hotel, Ned Colletti, the general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, stood behind the rows of reporters, taking a photograph with his cellphone. "I'm just here, really, to say thank you - thank you to everybody in baseball," Maddux said, after an introduction by his agent, Scott Boras. "I appreciate everything the game has given me. It's going to be hard to walk away, obviously, but it's time. I still think I can play this game, but not as well as I would like to. So it's time to say goodbye." Maddux retires with ..."
Maddux's career ends, legend begins
"Baseball's Winter Meetings, the annual conclave at which teams singly aim for additions, this time opened with a big collective subtraction. Greg Maddux, the biggest winner of his generation and among the most storied pitchers of all generations, the MENSA of the mound, officially announced his retirement on Monday at the Bellagio, the Meetings' headquarters. So that is where Maddux's career ended, and his legend will begin. He drew the shades on 355 wins, the most by a right-hander since Walter Johnson, who won the last of his 417 in 1927. He leaves with fewer than a thousand walks and more than 3,000 strikeouts, the only 300-game winner among the five men who've pitched to that spread. ..."
Greg Maddux to announce his retirement on Monday
"Greg Maddux has thrown his last pitch. The four-time Cy Young winner will announce his retirement Monday at the baseball winter meetings in Las Vegas. Maddux, who turns 43 in April, ranks eighth on the career wins list with 355. He went 8-13 with a 4.22 ERA last season with the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers. Maddux made three relief appearances in the playoffs for the Dodgers this year - he had an 0.00 ERA over four innings - and then filed for free agency amid speculation he would retire. On Friday, confirmation came from the office of Maddux's agent, Scott Boras. Maddux, his family and Boras will hold a news conference at the hotel where the meetings are being held to ..."
When Maddux says goodbye, he'll do it quietly
"On the cell from his home in Las Vegas, Greg Maddux sounded as though he probably has made a decision. But there are more important things in life, like the game of golf he just played with son Chase. "I'll figure it out soon, one way or another," said dad. "I mean, what I'm gonna do. Golf, I'll never figure out." It would be just like the greatest pitcher of his generation to retire with a one-sentence statement, released at midnight through agent Scott Boras, then turn off all the phones in the house and go to bed, all the better to prepare for 18 more holes the next morning. From Greg Maddux's debut with the Cubs in 1986, when he was inserted as a 17th-inning pinch-runner, to his NLCS ..."
Maddux adds an 18th Gold Glove
"Greg Maddux has an 18th Gold Glove to carry with him as he heads off into the sunset. One day after agent Scott Boras said at the General Managers Meetings that Maddux intends to retire, the announcement came Wednesday that the 42-year-old right-hander, who finished the year with the Dodgers, was again front and center on the list of National League Gold Glove winners in 2008. Maddux has won five Gold Gloves in a row, and 18 in a 19-year span. After getting 13 in a row from 1990 through 2002, Maddux saw Mike Hampton get that honor for NL pitchers in 2003. Then, Maddux got on another Gold Glove roll, bolstering his reputation as the best-fielding pitcher of his time. The remainder of the NL ..."
Maddux, Cook match zeros
"The 28,910 patrons in attendance at Coors Field on Sunday afternoon viewed two masterpieces for the price of one. One artist, four-time Cy Young Award winner Greg Maddux, wore Dodger blue. The other, sinkerball specialist Aaron Cook, wore the home whites of the Rockies. Together, they painted the longest 0-0 game in Coors Field history. The tie was finally broken in the 10th inning on a walkoff, bases-loaded single to right by Troy Tulowitzki off Los Angeles reliever Hong-Chih Kuo. The slicing single down the right-field line scored Matt Holliday and gave the Rockies a 1-0 victory, halting their seven-game losing streak. "I think it's important for us to finish the season strong and show ..."
Ex-mates call Maddux greatest, as both a pitcher and a mentor
"What would it mean if Greg Maddux passed Roger Clemens on major league baseball's victory list? "I think it would validate him as the greatest pitcher of our generation," Padres pitcher Chris Young said last night, before San Diego denied Maddux a win that would have moved him past Clemens into eighth all time. "I don't think there are any question marks or anything about Greg getting extra help. He's been natural and done it through pitching well and outthinking his opponents for a number of years." Clemens was alleged by the Mitchell Report to have used anabolic steroids late in his career; under Congressional oath, he denied the truth of such allegations. Among the pitchers who rank ..."
Dodgers' Maddux shakes off poor start to beat Padres and earn win No. 354
"He was pitching against his former teammates with the opportunity to provide another special moment for his Hall of Fame career. And in the middle of all of this, Greg Maddux was in need of a better performance after his past two poor outings with his new team that is in a pennant race in the National League West. Maddux opened the game giving up three consecutive hits that led to one run, but he settled down, giving up very little after that to help the Dodgers to a 5-2 victory over the San Diego Padres Monday night at Dodger Stadium before 44,087. He pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowed six hits, just three more after giving up those three in the first inning. He allowed just two runs, one ..."
Maddux ties Clemens with 354th career victory
"Greg Maddux regrets not having spent more time talking shop with Roger Clemens at the five All-Star games when they were in opposing dugouts. Maddux tied Clemens for eighth place on the career list with his 354th victory on Monday night, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-2 win over the San Diego Padres . ''I didn't talk about pitching as much as I would have liked to, I know that, but I've always respected what he's done,'' Maddux said. ''He did it in the American League, and that's a lot tougher over there. I think everybody knows that. But I've always considered him the best in the game because of the way he threw a baseball, how he set up hitters and how he competed.'' Maddux ..."
Dodgers' backup catcher gives up his number to Greg Maddux
"Backup catcher Danny Ardoin walked into the clubhouse Tuesday to unexpectedly find a jersey with No. 28 and his name stitched on the back. The No. 36 jersey that he had worn until then now belonged to Greg Maddux. Maddux wore No. 36 when he pitched for the Dodgers in 2006. Ardoin took no issue with how clubhouse manager Mitch Poole changed his uniform number without telling him. "He's a Hall of Famer, man," Ardoin said. Ardoin said he wasn't attached to his old number, something Poole said he knew from the time Ardoin was called up to the majors. Poole said he was relieved to avoid the controversy that resulted from Maddux's arrival two years ago, when Brad Penny refused to give his No. 31 ..."
Padres hope Maddux deal to Dodgers pays off
"Greg Maddux, a future Hall of Famer who graced the Padres with his pitching and professionalism, gave them a parting gift when he consented to a trade to the Dodgers that was approved Tuesday by the commissioner's office. The Padres will get two minor leaguers and salary savings for the 42-year-old Maddux, who was 6-9 with a 3.99 ERA this season. That's not a king's ransom. Nor is the return nearly as hefty as what the Padres said they would have obtained from the Philadelphia Phillies had Maddux not ruled out a trade to any club outside the West Coast. But Maddux did the Padres a favor, according to General Manager Kevin Towers. "Greg was more than willing to stay," Towers said. "He said ..."
Dodgers to get Greg Maddux
"The Dodgers are believed to have agreed in principle on a trade with the San Diego Padres that will bring legendary right-hander Greg Maddux, one of the key figures in the club's march to a playoff berth two seasons ago, back to Los Angeles. The deal, in which the Padres would acquire two minor-league players to be named later, could be completed as soon as today. Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti, citing baseball's tampering rules, declined to comment except to say, without mentioning Maddux by name, that no trade had been completed. When it was widely reported several days ago that Maddux, 42, had cleared waivers shortly after the July 31 trading deadline - meaning he still could be ..."
Extra rest for snakebitten Maddux
"Greg Maddux is getting an extra day off this week and will make his next start Friday in San Francisco rather than Thursday in Arizona. With Monday's off day for the team, Maddux will have six days' rest between starts. Chad Reineke, who won his major league debut Saturday against the Phillies, will start Thursday in Arizona on the normal four days' rest. Manager Bud Black explained the move was made to give Arizona a new look. "And Greg has a good history in San Francisco," Black said. That's true. Maddux's 30 wins against the Giants tie him with Phil Niekro and Don Sutton for the most against the Giants since they set up shop in San Francisco in 1958. Maddux is 7-1 with a 2.56 ERA in ..."
Many want Maddux to keep going, pass Spahn
"For years, I have been intrigued by the number 363. That is the number of wins Warren Spahn had during his major league career. The number was significant for several reasons. Spahn first reached the major leagues in 1942 as a 21-year-old. But shortly after his debut, he missed three seasons while a member of the Armed Forces in World War II. Spahn didn't win his first game in the major leagues until he was 25 in 1946. But at the age of 42, Spahn was a 23-game winner. Amazing man, Warren Spahn. And in my mind, he is the legitimate holder of the record for most games won in the major leagues. Four other pitchers won more. Cy Young won 511 games. Walter Johnson won 417. Both Grover Cleveland ..."
Maddux bewilders Rockies
"Haste made waste of the Rockies. On a breezy Saturday night Colorado spent a little over two hours killing hope. With the clock working against them this season, the Rockies were no match for Father Time Greg Maddux, falling coldly 8-3 to the San Diego Padres. Just when it appeared this homestand couldn't get any worse, Aaron Cook has fallen into a slump and the offense remains underwhelming, leaving the Rockies 7-1/2 back in the National League West pending the outcome of Arizona's late game. The latter had plenty to do with Maddux, who has never hid his disdain for pitching at Coors Field. In his last outing here June 30, he did some redecorating in the visitors clubhouse, fuming in ..."
Maddux has it his way
"In the Giants' five decades in San Francisco, Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax had nothing on Greg Maddux. Nor did Bob Gibson and Steve Carlton. Nor Tom Seaver, Orel Hershiser, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz. A Giants nemesis of historic proportions, Maddux has handled orange-and-black-clad batters more than any other pitcher since the Giants moved west in 1958, and here's anon his future: Maddux, 42, hasn't ruled out playing beyond this season. "From what we see, he should be pitching another 10 years," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He really shuts us down. We try to figure him out, but he throws his glove out there, and we have a tough time." It happened again Sunday. Maddux tossed his ..."
Maddux content extending his stay
"Skeptics who doubted Greg Maddux's sincerity when he said he preferred to stay in San Diego, even though it meant pitching for the last-place Padres, found out that he wasn't kidding. Had Maddux agreed to leave the West Coast leading up to Thursday's trade deadline, he may have been pitching for an Eastern team Sunday, rather than directing the Padres toward a 4-1 victory that denied the Giants a three-game sweep at Petco Park. Maddux said it was an easy decision to exempt clubs right of the left coast from the trade menu. Making his point, he reached into the only clubhouse stall next to his and pulled out a glove. Emblazoned on the leather was the name Chase Maddux. "This is Chase's ..."
Punch out for Maddux, Greene?
"Pitcher Greg Maddux Wednesday night packed a glove for Dodger Stadium in anticipation that the Padres - who want to shed more than $3 million of his salary - might trade him to Los Angeles Thursday. "I'm bringing this glove," Maddux said while pulling a black glove onto his left hand. "Do the Dodgers wear blue spikes?" Maddux may not be the only Padres player out of the lineup Friday when the club resumes play. Shortstop Khalil Greene almost certainly will sit out because of a hand injury suffered Wednesday night when Greene - frustrated by his season-long hitting slump and the pain of hitting a ball off his shin - socked a storage chest near the dugout. "It's not good," Greene said of his ..."
Is Maddux on move to L.A.?
"Greg Maddux again told the Padres that he wants to stay on the West Coast, which probably leaves the Dodgers as the only potential trade partner for the right-hander going into Thursday's trade deadline. The Padres want to shed the final two months of Maddux's $10 million salary. General Manager Kevin Towers said he briefed Maddux on the trade market about two weeks ago and again Tuesday. "His position really hasn't changed," Towers said. "He only wants us to focus on West Coast-contending teams. That kind of eliminates our options, other than one club." Towers acknowledged that the Dodgers are probably that club. Dodgers GM Ned Colletti has traded for Maddux once, and it turned out to be ..."
These big names could be going, going, gone
"Between now and the end of the month, there figures to be at least a few big names being shipped around the league. Unlike in years past, trading partners aren’t waiting until the deadline to deal for big names like CC Sabathia or Rich Harden. But it still is fun to wait and see what happens July 31, when teams have to make moves without the players first clearing waivers. So who could be going to a new team between now and then? Here’s an educated (as in a Texas A&M education) guess regarding six big names who could have a new address by Aug. 1."
Pads, Maddux stuck in wasteland
"Greg Maddux is giving the Padres good pitching. He's contributing sacrifice bunts to an offense that can be clumsy. Behind the scenes, he's offering wise counsel to a team that isn't known for its high baseball IQ. Why, the 42-year-old even stole a base Saturday night, becoming the oldest pitcher in baseball history to swipe a bag. "Hooray for the old guys," Maddux said. "I'm also the oldest pitcher to steal a base and lose." Maddux pitched seven innings last night with three runs allowed, then took the defeat because Padres hitters let minor league veteran Charlie Morton and three Braves relievers deal them a 4-1 defeat at Petco Park."
Peavy, Maddux may get some extra rest before All-Star break
"Jake Peavy will get two more starts before the All-Star break. But he might get an extra day's rest before each start. Ditto for Greg Maddux. "We'll see how it works out," manager Bud Black said Monday, admitting that Peavy could be pushed back until Saturday, although Friday would be his normal fifth day. If he stuck to a five-day rotation, Peavy would start Friday night in Arizona and next Wednesday at Petco Park against Florida. But his time would come up again on the Monday of the All-Star break. "With days off the next two Thursdays before the break, it might benefit everyone to get an extra day," Black said."
Twins complete sweep of Cy Young winners with 9-3 victory over Padres, Greg Maddux
"Anybody left? Care to give it a try, Chris Carpenter? Ready for a comeback, Roger Clemens? Anyone have Sandy Koufax's cell-phone number? The Twins completed their sweep of Cy Young winners on Wednesday night, four of the National League's finest in just five games, and this time, they didn't just beat Greg Maddux, they crushed him. Maddux may have 350 victories, but the Twins have Brendan Harris — and an eighth consecutive victory, 9-3 over the San Diego Padres."
Maddux winless since May 10
"Greg Maddux hit a batter, a first this year. He threw a wild pitch, a first this year. He threw more than 100 pitches, only the second time he's done that in two years with the Padres. He committed an error. Swear. Yeah, he did that, too. There are many other pitchers, maybe even a C.C. Sabathia, who would take the kind of game Maddux threw in Sunday's 7-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians. As noted by Manager Bud Black, Maddux came in with a decent ERA (3.33) and lowered it in a six-inning stint. But it decidedly was not a typical outing for the four-time Cy Young Award-winner in his duel with Sabathia."
Homer off Greg Maddux is special to Indians' Ben Francisco
"Ben Francisco said it was not a dream come true. But he admitted having San Diego pitcher Greg Maddux on his mind when he went to bed Saturday night. When it came time for the reality of facing the future Hall of Famer on Sunday afternoon at Progressive Field, the Tribe rookie outfielder did not let the moment get to him. Francisco sent the first pitch he saw from Maddux in the third inning on a line to the left-field home run porch for a three-run homer. It put the Indians in front, 3-0, and they went on for the 7-3 win against the Padres. "It was pretty special because I grew up watching him on television," said Francisco, who went 2-for-3 against Maddux. "It was a change-up, ..."
Maddux has history with Indians
"He, too, has been here before. It's been years and years, eons on the baseball calendar. So long ago, it taxes even the memory of a Greg Maddux, who never seems to forget anything. He does have a memento, though, if he needs it. It's a World Series ring. "I remember giving up the home run to Albert Belle," said Maddux of the first game he ever pitched at Jacobs (now Progressive) Field, "and Eddie Murray thinking I was throwing at him." So was he? "No, but I remember him thinking I was," said Maddux. "That's really about it. That was a long time ago. And I remember we lost." That was Game 5 of the 1995 World Series, which the Indians won 5-4, only to watch the Atlanta Braves wrap up ..."
Maddux to the Reds? Not likely
"Q The Padres are exploring the possibility of trading starting pitcher Greg Maddux. He has stated he would only agree to be traded to a contender and preferably a team in the National League. Would the Reds be interested in trading for Greg Maddux? ? Anthony, Dayton A Hey, Greg's brother, Mike, a former major-league pitcher and pitching coach for the Milwaukee Brewers, was born in Dayton. Don't think that would help, though. Have you checked the standings? Key word from Greg: "Contender." And the Reds are getting younger and Maddux would push the Reds toward Social Security status. I would say zero chance, with a capital 'Z' and an emphasis on, "No chance.""
Winning streak ends at 9
"By the time Wednesday night played out, Ted Lilly had the pitching staff back on course -- but not enough to beat Greg Maddux and the Padres in a 2-1 loss at Petco Park. ''The irony is it's the best game we've pitched in a while,'' Piniella said after Lilly pitched into the eighth before allowing a leadoff double to Brian Giles that turned into the winning run when Kevin Kouzmanoff delivered a one-out sacrifice fly to center off reliever Carlos Marmol. It snapped the Cubs' longest winning streak since 2001."
Maddux, Padres end Cubs' win streak
"Two months into the season, the Cubs are the obvious front-runner for the National League pennant, an unfamiliar position for many of the players. "Yeah, we are right now," Aramis Ramirez said. "But last year at this time, Milwaukee was the same way and they didn't make the playoffs. So you can't take anything for granted. We have to go out there and keep winning games, keep winning series." Though San Diego snapped the Cubs' nine-game winning streak Wednesday night with a 2-1 victory, the Cubs still managed to win the series."
Even in loss, Greg Maddux shows why he's great
"It's preposterous to give up 10 hits in four innings and be trailing only 1-0. But so is the idea of a pitcher winning 350 games without being able to blow away hitters with his fastball or buckle knees with his curveball. That's Maddux. He's different—always has been and it looks like he will stay that way forever. Working in the finale of a four-game series, a dutiful member of the majors-worst Padres, Maddux didn't have squat on this afternoon. But he competed like he was from another planet, just as he has in his previous 715 starts, most of which were with the Cubs or the Atlanta Braves."
Greg Maddux has history at Wrigley
"I reminded Greg Maddux of his shaky rookie year with the Cubs, and how I referred to him as "looking like your neighborhood paperboy" in a 1986 Tribune article. Maddux, now 42, smiled and shared a laugh Monday as we walked through the tunnel toward the visitors' clubhouse at Wrigley Field. We agreed he is looking a little too old to be delivering papers these days. The San Diego right-hander will look to collect his 351st win Thursday afternoon against the Cubs. As his marvelous Hall of Fame career winds down, Maddux stops to smell the roses, even in the dank depths of this aged ballyard."
Wrigley return nothing special for Maddux
"The drama was taken out of Greg Maddux's return to Wrigley Field this week when he won his 350th game late Saturday, becoming only the third pitcher since the 1920s to do it. San Diego closer Trevor Hoffman handed Maddux the ball after saving a 3-2 victory over Colorado. "I'll take any free ball I can get," Maddux said in typical low-key fashion. "I'll give it to my kid, let him go play with it.""
Maddux finally notches no. 350
"Trevor Hoffman pumped his fist and screamed "yeah" twice as Padres infielders Tadahito Iguchi and Khalil Greene turned a game-ending double play Saturday night. Hoffman was extra excited, not only because the Padres had won for just the fifth time in 23 games, 3-2 over the Rockies, but also because he had secured Greg Maddux's 350th career victory. The all-time saves leader gave the ball to Maddux. "I'll take any free ball I can get," Maddux quipped."
Maddux may have opportunity to hop off the Oblivion Express
"Greg Maddux deserves better than this and, odds are, he is going to get it. Maddux has too much to offer and too little time left to be stuck pitching for these Padres at this point in his Cooperstown career. He can still help somebody chase a pennant. He should not be stuck shackled to the Oblivion Express. There's a deal to be made for the pitcher who finally earned his 350th career victory on his fifth try Saturday night at Petco Park. Everybody needs pitching, and most teams need it enough to shrug off Maddux' age, his radar gun readings and his sophomoric affection for bodily functions. "Somebody wants him," Padres ace Jake Peavy said Saturday. "He can help somebody. It sucks ..."
Maddux smart enough to get out while getting's good
"The hitters will tell you when you're finished. That's been true ever since Cy Young was still a pitcher and not an award. Former 20-game winner Matt Morris, even at 32, found this out recently in Pittsburgh. Randy Johnson, with an ERA pushing five, may be finding this out in Arizona, and he will hardly be the last hurler to get the memo in such a cold, cruel fashion. Greg Maddux? He may be 42 and the Marlins may have cuffed him around for 11 hits on Sunday, marking the second time in four starts he has surrendered at least that many, but something tells you he will be smart enough to get out while the getting's good. He certainly isn't going to stick around just to pad his ..."
Hamels foils Maddux milestone
"Ruiz scored on a sacrifice fly, the Phillies survived a run by the Padres in the eighth and the Padres went on to lose 7-4 after relievers Glendon Rusch and Kevin Cameron allowed four runs in the eighth."
Phillies' Hamels delays history for Padres' Maddux
"Last night, however, Hamels outdueled Maddux, allowing five hits in 7 1/3 innings of a 7-4 win over the Padres."
Maddux streak on line tonight in San Diego
"May 9 will mark the fifth anniversary of the last time the Giants beat Greg Maddux. However, like Ebenezer Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol," the Giants have one more chance to see the error of their ways and make sure Maddux does not make that type of history."
Haren outshines Maddux
"A great effort looks even better when it is accomplished against a great foe. That is what made Dan Haren's performance against the Padres on Friday night even more memorable as he easily got the better of future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux, who was going for the 350th victory of his career."
Maddux shuts down Dodgers
"The sinkerballer and change-up artist threw five scoreless innings in 95-degree heat, leading the Padres to a 1-0 victory over the Dodgers to decide a three-game series. It was the 349th win of Maddux's Hall of Fame career and an early present for him today, when he will turn 42."
Dodgers lineup shoots blanks against Maddux, San Diego
"It isn't clear whether Maddux, the famously resourceful San Diego right-hander and four-time Cy Young Award winner, was in the Dodgers' heads before their 1-0 loss to the Padres in front of 47,357 at Dodger Stadium. But by the time it was over, it was obvious he had worked his way in there, because Maddux was all the Dodgers could talk about."
Thigh bruise dictates short outing for Maddux
"Greg Maddux said he has “no worries” over losing more than half an outing yesterday to a left thigh bruise suffered when Derrek Lee's liner struck him in the first inning. Maddux, who went on to retire four more Cubs hitters at HoHoKam Park, said he should make his next scheduled start and build enough stamina to face the Astros in the third game of the season, April 2."
Don't let Maddux's 'wine gut' deceive
"Among athletes, Maddux may not look like Mr. Universe, but his career is all-world. And you probably won't see him answering pointed questions at a congressional hearing anytime soon."
Maddux breezes through outing
"For 2 1/2 innings, Tim Lincecum and San Diego's Greg Maddux offered the ultimate contrast in elite, big-league pitching in a game the Padres eventually won 9-6."
Hard to believe but Maddux sounds ready to call it a career
"So the greatest pitcher of this generation -- a fact that will be set in stone when Maddux passes Roger Clemens in victories, innings and starts in 2008 -- is about to put the finishing touches on a masterful career that began with an 8-18 record over 32 starts with the Cubs in 1986-87."
Padres officially announce $10 million, 1-year deal with Maddux
"Greg Maddux isn't ready to play golf full-time. The Padres on Monday finalized a $10 million, one-year contract with Maddux, who will return for at least one more season as their No. 3 starter...Maddux, who turns 42 on April 14, agreed to terms of the deal two weeks earlier."
