Evgeni Malkin News & Rumors

Evgeni Malkin's spin-o-rama goal stirs debate
"Evgeni Malkin's spin-o-rama goal in the shootout against the Canadiens Tuesday has resurrected the debate over whether such moves are illegal. The general consensus is that they aren't entirely kosher, but the NHL has tolerated them and there's no going back once the precedent has been set. The anti spin-o-rama camp, which includes most goaltenders in the league, bases its opposition on a rule that doesn't exist."
Plekanec line shut down Malkin, Cunneyworth says
"Tomas Plekanec scored the winning goal in the shootout, but that wasn't his most important contribution to the Canadiens' 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins Tuesday night. Plekanec and his linemates, Travis Moen and Mathieu Darche, were charged with checking the Evgeni Malkin line and they threw a blanket over the National Hockey League's scoring leader. "That was a difficult assignment for them, particularly for Moen who was coming back, but they did a good job and they created some chances of their own," said coach Randy Cunneyworth. "It hasn't been just one game for Tomas, he's played well the last couple of games," added Cunneyworth."
Malkin shooting for much higher profile
"Evgeni Malkin has a Stanley Cup ring, an NHL scoring championship and a playoff MVP award. What he does not have, at least in parts of North America, is a public presence equal to his accomplishments. Fellow Russian Alex Ovechkin got much of the attention in their draft year, and Malkin has been overshadowed by Sidney Crosby much of their time together with the Penguins, but it has gotten pretty tough to overlook Malkin lately. While Ovechkin is having a lackluster season and Crosby has missed all but eight games because of a concussion and neck injury, Malkin entered the Penguins game against Montreal Tuesday night at the Bell Centre as the league's leading scorer. He also has been"
Malkin sparks Penguins to comeback and 5-4 victory in shootout
"Down. Yes. Out? Not quite. The Penguins returned from the All-Star break and pulled off a wild comeback Tuesday night, beating the Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-4, in a shootout after trailing by three goals in the third period. Evgeni Malkin scored the winner, clanking one off the post to beat goalie Jonas Gustavsson on his stick side, as the only one of six shooters to score in the shootout. The win pushed the Penguins winning streak to eight games."
Penguins' stars shine bright at NHL All-Star Game in Ottawa
"Fittingly, as the capper to a four-day stretch over which he constantly unveiled a personality worthy of attention, Penguins center Evgeni Malkin delivered a wicked one-liner about his own teammate after the NHL All-Star Game on Sunday. Of course, defenseman Kris Letang was not a teammate of Malkin's at Scotiabank Place. "Kris plays sometimes in (the) offensive zone, not defensive zone," Malkin said, referring to his set-up of Calgary Flames right winger Jarome Iginla's goal with Letang unsuccessfully defending on the sequence. "(Letang) gives me a chance to score, you know — so I say thank you to him.""
More glitter on Malkin's horizon
"At the 2008 NHL All-Star Game in Atlanta, Evgeni Malkin could not be persuaded to speak to reporters after picking up a couple of assists -- not by local media members he knew, not by Penguins staff members, not even by then-teammate and friend Sergei Gonchar. What a difference over the weekend at the 2012 confluence of star power. Malkin smiled, held court with media members, had fun with his temporary set of teammates. All without hesitation, without coaxing, without a Russian translator. "I feel awesome," he said a few minutes after the game at Scotiabank Place. He had a goal and an assist Sunday to help Team Zdeno Chara beat Team Daniel Alfredsson, 12-9."
Gab to go with Malkin's game
"Evgeni Malkin was offered a Russian translator and the famous Ottawa doughy treat known as Beaver Tail on Friday afternoon. He passed on both -- matter-of-factly regarding the translator. "I don't need a translator," a grinning Malkin said while being interviewed by Michael Landsberg, Canadian talk show host of the popular afternoon "Off The Record" program that is similar to ESPN's "The Sports Reporters." After a tour de force of interviews, mostly in English but some in his native Russian, Malkin wrapped his All-Star Game media day obligations by joining Landsberg for a live TV interview. TSN's Alyonka Larionov, who previously worked for the Penguins website, was part of the interview --"
Malkin's opinions, wit kick into high gear
"In a crowded ballroom of the Westin Hotel, it was difficult for one player to stand out Friday at the two-hour media scramble with members of the NHL All-Star team. Reporters, cameras, sound booms, podiums and sets for TV shows were everywhere. Anyone who picked out Penguins center Evgeni Malkin to listen to or follow around had a chance to see and hear a confident, gracious, funny guy, who has greatly shed the veil of shyness and a language barrier. Malkin, 25, who leads the NHL with 58 points in 42 games, did lengthy interviews in English and Russian, a stand-up interview with a Canadian network and a sit-down interview with an offbeat Canadian TV show, in which he played along with some"
Star trek: Malkin gladly heading to All-Star Game
"Evgeni Malkin could have begged off. Could have let it be known that he simply wouldn't be able to participate in the NHL All-Star Game on Sunday in Ottawa because he had, say, a nagging groin injury lately, and resting it would be the right thing to do for his team and himself. Or because he has been battling a case of the sniffles that developed into a full-blown, flu-like ailment."
It'll be Malkin vs. Neal, Letang in Sunday's All-Star Game
"The Penguins are guaranteed to have at least one player on the winning team Sunday in the NHL All-Star Game at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa. At least one on the losing club, too. That is because their three representatives in the game -- center Evgeni Malkin, winger James Neal and defenseman Kris Letang -- are divided between the competing squads. Malkin will be on the team captained by Boston defenseman Zdeno Chara, while Letang and Neal are part of the one led by Ottawa forward Daniel Alfredsson. Malkin was the fifth player selected overall. Letang was chosen 10th, Neal 28th."
Kunitz, Malkin lead Penguins to shootout victory against the Blues
"There would be no rollover game to launch them into the All-Star break. The Penguins knew that. Their 3-2 shootout win Tuesday night against the St. Louis Blues at Scottrade Center was as tough a game as they have played, primarily because the Blues have evolved into one of the NHL's best teams in the span of a less than three months. "They're a physical team and they just keep coming," said winger Chris Kunitz, who celebrated his 500th NHL game by scoring the deciding goal in the shootout."
Malkin continues torrid stretch with OT winner, 2 assists
"Teams have been making a point lately of getting their best defensive pairing on the ice against Evgeni Malkin. Doesn't seem to matter much. Many opponents are doing everything possible to match their top defensive forwards against him, too."
Malkin's mastery produces another win for Penguins
"The rivalry is back. After three close but generally tepid games this season, the star power and intensity that has dominated the rivalry between the Penguins and Capitals resurfaced Sunday at Consol Energy Center. Evgeni Malkin — who else? — delivered an overtime goal to lift the Penguins to a 4-3 victory. Following the game, which featured three lead changes, a frantic final minute of regulation and a showdown between Malkin and Washington star Alex Ovechkin, there was a difference of opinion regarding who was responsible for the victory. Ovechkin was impressed by Malkin, whose goal and two assists increased his league-leading point total to 58. But Ovechkin didn't seem so impressed with"
Malkin mania puts Ovechkin in the shadows
"Alex Ovechkin's relationship with Evgeni Malkin has ranged from brotherhood to belligerence, from Olympic roommates to NHL rivals. But the Washington Capitals' falling star has no trouble reaching the consensus these days regarding his Russian countryman. "He's the top player in the league," Ovechkin said Saturday at Consol Energy Center. Ovechkin's tone was that of admiration. "Malkin," he said, "right now dominates." Almost eight years following one of the most top-heavy drafts in NHL history, the first two players selected are moving in opposite directions. Malkin, chosen No. 2, has jumped into the NHL scoring lead and is a leading candidate for MVP honors. All the while, Ovechkin's"
Evgeni Malkin given "too much room," Cunneyworth says
"The Canadiens learned that keeping Evgeni Malkin under wraps is a 60-minute job. "I thought we did a pretty job against him for most of the game but we gave him too much room on that goal," Canadiens coach Randy Cunneyworth said after Malkin provided the spark for the Pittsburgh Penguins' 5-4 shootout win over the Canadiens Friday night at the Consol Energy Center. Malkin is the NHL's leading scorer but the Canadiens limited him to two harmless shots on goal through the first 57 minutes. The Penguins tried to set him up as the trigger man on their four power plays but the Canadiens blocked five of his shots and another three went wide of the mark. But Malkin scored at 17:17 of the third"
Malkin lifts Penguins past Rangers, fourth-straight victory
"Defenseman Kris Letang was awfully excited to return to the lineup following a 21-game absence with a concussion. After all, he was missing out on Evgeni Malkin's magic. Malkin scored two goals, and the Penguins put together one of their best performances of the season in a commanding 4-1 victory Thursday over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. The Penguins, who have won four straight after losing six in a row, are now tied with New Jersey for sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings. "It's fun to see him (Malkin) going like this," said Letang, who led the Penguins in ice time and added an assist. "I had a chance to watch him from up top (in the press box). Playing with"
Malkin leads way to victory
"Evgeni Malkin has played some terrific hockey lately. Quite possibly the finest of his career. But maybe, just maybe, not his best of this season. That, defenseman Brooks Orpik suggested after the Penguins' 2-1 shootout victory against Carolina Tuesday night at Consol Energy Center, might still be coming."
Vinny Lecavalier has no regrets in going after Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin
"Lightning captain Vinny Lecavalier said he does not regret anything he did or tried to do Sunday to Penguins star Evgeni Malkin. Not jumping Malkin from behind or the sucker punch he threw to Malkin's face at the end of a scrum. It was justified payback, Lecavalier said, for what he believes was Malkin's attempt in the third period of a 6-3 Pittsburgh victory to go for his knees while ducking a Lecavalier check. "I thought he went a little low on the hit," Lecavalier said Monday at the Tampa Bay Times Forum. "Sometimes there's confrontations on the ice. It's heat of the moment. It just happens.""
Tampa Bay Lightning's Vinny Lecavalier attacks Pittsburgh Penguins' Evgeni Malkin
"Lightning C Vinny Lecavalier had a big part in Sunday's 6-3 loss to the Penguins. He assisted on two goals in a third-period comeback that briefly tied the score 3-3. But he also attacked and sucker punched Evgeni Malkin with 7:49 left in the game, earning 14 minutes in penalties — a double-minor for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct — with Tampa Bay down 5-3. Lecavalier left the arena before talking to reporters; unusual for a captain whose free-falling team lost its seventh straight."
Malkin's mastery with Penguins short-circuits Lightning
"Make that captain with a "K." Center Evgeni Malkin joined in his team's support of captain Sidney Crosby by wearing the patented Russian "K" on his sweater during a recent practice. He played like a captain Sunday. With the Penguins reeling after blowing a three-goal, third period lead, Malkin responded with a natural hat trick while leading the Penguins to a 6-3 victory. Malkin also produced two assists. His five-point game catapulted him from ninth to second in the NHL scoring race. "That's what great players do," said center Richard Park, who registered his third goal of the season. "Those things don't surprise us. He's a special player.""
Malkin, Lecavalier mix it up in Penguins' victory
"Center Evgeni Malkin simply shrugged his shoulders when asked why he was attacked by Lightning captain Vincent Lecavalier on Sunday. Moments earlier, Malkin ducked to avoid a hit from Lecavalier, who was attempting to hit the Penguins center into the boards. Lecavalier then approached Malkin from behind and started throwing punches. He was given four minutes of penalties for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct. Malkin received two minutes for roughing. "Vinny felt that Malkin tried to go for his knees," Tampa Bay coach Guy Boucher said. "In those situations, he's the captain and he wants to show that we are not going to just take everything and be little poodles and wait for things to"
Malkin tried to duck taking a penalty
"When Lightning center Vincent Lecavalier came charging after Evgeni Malkin , the Penguins center had one thought. "I just wanted to play hockey. I didn't want to fight with him," Malkin said of a third-period incident Sunday in the Penguins' 6-3 win at the Tampa Bay Times Forum. "It's the last five minutes, and I wanted to stay on the ice." Lecavalier looked to have lined up his counterpart near the corner boards, but Malkin ducked and Lecavalier tumbled into the boards. Lecavalier jumped up, approached Malkin from behind and half-bear-hugged, half-punched him."
Malkin saves the day with 3 goals in final period
"It was not quite five minutes, but it carried the potential to be devastating for the Penguins. Imagine them flying home to Pittsburgh from a sunny Florida day, having to brace against the cold and scrape ice from their vehicles while strapped with the effects of a fall-from-ahead defeat and visions of a recent losing streak threatening to repeat itself. "We just relaxed for five minutes," center Evgeni Malkin said of a three-goal burst by the Tampa Bay Lightning early in the third period that tied their matinee Sunday at the Tampa Bay Times Forum."
Malkin only Penguin selected for NHL All-Star Game
"Center Evgeni Malkin is the only Penguin chosen to participate in the NHL All-Star Game. He was among 48 players, 12 of whom were rookies, selected by the league's Hockey Operations Dept. The game will be played Jan. 29 in Ottawa."
Pens' Malkin has fun with world junior championships
"Penguins star Evgeni Malkin wasn't in the locker room following Thursday's practice at Consol Energy Center, but he certainly made his presence felt on Twitter during Tuesday's matchup of Russia and Canada in the world junior championships. Malkin mocked some of his Canadian teammates when Russia jumped to a 6-1 lead, then fell silent as Canada roared back before falling, 6-5. "He's been a little annoying lately," center Jordan Staal said with a smile. Staal's locker is next to Malkin's. "It was well deserved, the way they played," Staal said. "You never want to lose to Russia, especially when you've got this loudmouth beside you.""
Malkin named NHL star of the month for December
"Penguins center Evgeni Malkin was named the NHL's No. 1 star for the month of December. Malkin had six goals and 14 assists in 14 games, and put together a nine-game scoring streak."
Malkin guides Pens in win over Blackhawks
"Sidney Crosby can take his time returning from his bout with concussion-symptoms, so long as Evgeni Malkin and Marc-Andre Fleury keep playing like this. Malkin continued his torrid pace and Fleury held off Chicago's late charge as the Penguins, despite playing without Crosby and with a depleted blue line, produced one of their finest efforts of the season in a 3-2 victory over the high-flying Chicago Blackhawks. Chicago peppered Fleury with 19 shots in the final period but he slammed the door in the final moments, even when the Blackhawks enjoyed a power play during the final 1:29 of regulation. "It got pretty crazy," Fleury said. Malkin's current streak has been pretty crazy, too."
Pens' Malkin regains prolific scoring touch
"Just when the Penguins need him most, the old Evgeni Malkin has surfaced. Malkin, 10 months removed from significant knee surgery and a couple of years removed from the best-player-in-the-world discussion, is the NHL's hottest player. And maybe its best. With so many key players out of the lineup, Malkin is being leaned on more heavily than any point in his career. The star center is clearly up to the challenge. "And he needs to be," left wing Matt Cooke said. "He's the guy right now. He can't look anywhere else. It's got to be on him, and he knows that. He understands that, and he's playing very well.""
Malkin's hat trick buries Buffalo, 8-3
"Evgeni Malkin did not score a milestone goal Saturday night, the way Simon Despres did. And he didn't reach a major statistical plateau, the way Marc-Andre Fleury did. Which might be the only things he didn't manage during the Penguins' 8-3 victory against Buffalo at Consol Energy Center. Malkin scored three goals -- his seventh career hat trick -- and set up two others which, all things considered, really isn't a bad evening's work. "My first shot, I scored," Malkin said. "Second shot, I score again. It's a lucky day for me.""
Bad breaks slow Malkin, Penguins in setback
"Two Russian superstars put on a show Monday at Consol Energy Center. One received an exceptional break, while the other endured total frustration. Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk scored a goal and made a miraculous setup of another, while Penguins center Evgeni Malkin came tantalizingly close to a big night in Detroit's 4-1 win. "Not good luck," Malkin said. Not at all. Malkin scored with 4.5 seconds left in the first period to give the Penguins a lead, but he could have had three or four goals against Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard. In the second period, Malkin's shot trickled through Howard and struck the inside of the post. Malkin then lunged toward the net and slapped a shot toward the"
Malkin, Staal uncertain for depleted Penguins
"Evgeni Malkin has become an unexpected addition to the Pittsburgh Penguins' ever-growing injury list that, once again, is headed by star Sidney Crosby. Malkin, who missed seven games earlier this season following right knee surgery, missed the morning skate in advance of Tuesday night's interconference game against the Detroit Red Wings. Coach Dan Bylsma didn't offer an explanation, and said Malkin would be a game-time decision. Malkin practiced Monday with no apparent problems. Jordan Staal, the Penguins' all-important No. 3 center, missed that practice with an unspecified lower-body injury but took part in the morning skate."
Sens' Gonchar, Pens' Malkin together again
"Ottawa Senators defenseman Sergei Gonchar was always as much a big brother to center Evgeni Malkin as a teammate during their four seasons with the Penguins. Gonchar is in his second season with Ottawa, but the bond remains. The Russians spent Thanksgiving together — Malkin's girlfriend did the cooking — and Gonchar sounded proud of Malkin's progress since injuring his knee in February. They worked out together in Russia during the summer. "To me," Gonchar said, "it seems like he is making that next step and maturing. He is more serious about his job. Last year, he didn't have a successful season like everyone expected him to have, so obviously, he was hoping to play better." Malkin's"
Gonchar likes Malkin's maturity
"Ottawa defenseman Sergei Gonchar and Penguins center Evgeni Malkin have been close for years. Malkin was Gonchar's tenant for part of the time that Gonchar played with the Penguins. The two also use the same summer training facility in Moscow. This year, Gonchar knew Malkin was rehabilitating from knee surgery during the offseason, but he also noticed that his former teammate was working out with more purpose. Despite being slowed early by soreness in the knee, Malkin has had a strong first quarter this season. He had 18 points in 15 games before facing the Senators Friday night at Consol Energy Center. "To me, it seems like he is making that next step," Gonchar said. "He's maturing. He is"
Crosby return has Pens' Malkin thinking Cup
"Even though it's only November, captain Sidney Crosby's magnificent return to the NHL has fellow superstar Evgeni Malkin thinking about the Stanley Cup. Malkin admitted to being blown away by Crosby's four-point performance against the Islanders. "If he keeps playing the same way," Malkin said, "we have a good chance to win the Stanley Cup." The Stanley Cup won't be awarded until June, of course, but Malkin couldn't contain his optimism. Monday's 5-0 win marked only the third time in the past two seasons that Crosby, Malkin and center Jordan Staal have played in the same game."
Malkin's score accelerates Pens' comeback
"The Penguins are without their captain, but they do not lack for leaders. Just look at who did what in a 6-3 victory over the Colorado Avalanche at Consol Energy Center on Tuesday night. Actually, consider who said what. "We got back in the room and some guys told the truth," defenseman Kris Letang said, initially declining to identify the most vocal teammates during a first-intermission "talk." "It was just the truth, and it was that we were playing like (expletive)." Letang later conceded that center Jordan Staal might have expressed that thought. "I'm not saying what the guys said ... but Geno is more a leader by example, and Staalsy will definitely talk more. It's their play on the ice"
Malkin treatment shows Pens coach on point
"Penguins coach Dan Bylsma showed Monday that he really is an elite manager of a hockey team. His club's top healthy player, center Evgeni Malkin, did not practice that day. With an ailing right knee that was surgically repaired last season, perhaps Malkin physically needed a break. Then again, maybe Malkin needed a mental break? His performance in a 4-3 loss at Toronto last Saturday certainly indicated as much. His goal and an assist were overshadowed by two careless penalties that resulted in power-plays goals by the Maple Leafs."
Penguins' Malkin leads shootout win over Islanders
"The Penguins don't win many games anymore when they are losing after two periods. Fact is, their 3-2 victory against the New York Islanders at Consol Energy Center Thursday night was the first time they have done it in more than a year. The previous time was so long ago that the team they came back against, the Atlanta Thrashers, no longer exists."
Malkin returns, Penguins defeat Islanders, 3-0
"Evgeni Malkin returned to the Penguins' lineup for their 3-0 victory against the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum tonight, but they might not have needed him. Not when goalie Marc-Andre Fleury turned in such an outstanding performance, turning aside 33 shots for his 20th career shutout and first since March 25 as the Penguins raised their record to 7-2-2. Malkin had missed the previous five games and seven of the previous eight because of soreness in his surgically repaired right knee."
Fleury nets 1st shutout of season; Malkin returns to Penguins lineup
"The Penguins probably did not need Evgeni Malkin in this game. Not when Marc-Andre Fleury continued to play like he could stop a twice-deflected flea in a wind tunnel. With his eyes soldered shut, at that. But, after having Malkin sit out the previous five games, and seven of the previous eight, because of soreness in his surgically repaired right knee, the Penguins undoubtedly were happy to have him be a part of their 3-0 victory Tuesday night against the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum."
Malkin could return tonight vs. Islanders
"Center Evgeni Malkin is with the Penguins in New York and could possibly make his return to the lineup tonight against the Islanders. Malkin hasn't played since Oct. 13 because of a sore knee. He practiced with the Penguins on Monday, marking the seventh time in eight days he has skated. Malkin appeared to get through yesterday's 60-minute workout with no sign of discomfort. "(Malkin) is still not ruled in or out for (today's) game," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. Malkin has scored one goal and three assists in three games this season. He skated on a line with left wing Steve Sullivan and right wing James Neal during yesterday's workout."
Malkin misses fifth straight game
"Although he has skated with seemingly no pain for two consecutive days, center Evgeni Malkin remained out of the lineup when the Penguins hosted New Jersey on Saturday. Malkin has not played since Oct. 13 because of lingering scar tissue issues in his surgically repaired knee. He has produced one goal and three assists in three games this season. Malkin practiced with center Sidney Crosby for two days while the Penguins were in Winnipeg and Minnesota earlier this week. He then participated in Friday's practice and Saturday's morning skate. The Penguins believe he will be back in the lineup soon and have emphasized that the injury isn't serious."
Reports: Malkin won't play on Pens' upcoming trip
"Reports out of Pittsburgh have confirmed that Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin did not accompany the team on its two-game road trip as a result of recurring soreness to his surgically repaired right knee. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Malkin, who has 4 points but has missed three of the past four games, will be sidelined for matches in Winnipeg on Monday and Minnesota on Tuesday. He'll be re-evaluated prior to Pittsburgh's home contest against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday."
Crosby, Malkin not in our 'burgh
"The chances of Sidney Crosby making his return from post-concussion syndrome against the Winnipeg Jets on Monday have been downgraded from slim to none. As the Jets get set to host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday at MTS Centre, there was some buzz circulating that Crosby might be back in the lineup since he was cleared for contact last week. However, both Crosby (post-concussion syndrome) and Evgeni Malkin — who has been limited to three games and missed three of the last four after undergoing off-season knee surgery — were among the injured Penguins who didn't make the trip to Winnipeg, instead remaining in Pittsburgh."
Sore right knee keeps Malkin out again
"It is not difficult for Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff to recall the prowess of the Penguins when their top three centers are playing. "I don't forget," he said. "I know what they're like." That's more because of impact than recent memory. Center Evgeni Malkin sat out the game Saturday night at Consol Energy Center against the Sabres. It was the third game in the past four he has missed because of soreness in his surgically repaired right knee. He had two assists Thursday in the Penguins' overtime loss against Washington but has not been on the ice since. Penguins coach Dan Byslma indicated the absence against Buffalo was precautionary."
Malkin will not play in Pens game tonight
"Penguins center Evgeni Malkin will not play tonight against Buffalo at Consol Energy Center, coach Dan Bylsma said. Malkin has recurring soreness in his surgically repaired right knee. He missed two games before returning Thursday, recording two assists in an overtime loss to Washington."
Malkin, Ovechkin team up for Russian cause
"There was a time when the Penguins' Evgeni Malkin and Washington's Alex Ovechkin were bitter rivals on and off the ice. These Russian hockey stars reconciled at the 2009 NHL All-Star Game, and Thursday night they found a common, heartfelt cause. They organized a charity theme for their teams' game at Consol Energy Center to benefit the families left behind when all members of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team died recently in a plane crash in Russia. "It's important for me, for all of us," Malkin said. "We're all one big hockey family and we need to help.""
Sore Malkin misses second game in row
"The Penguins, a team considered to be deep at center, are hurting at that position. For the team's home opener Tuesday night against Florida, Evgeni Malkin missed his second game in a row because of unspecified "soreness," according to coach Dan Bylsma , while Sidney Crosby (concussion) and Dustin Jeffrey (knee) remained out. Malkin has two goals and an assist in two games, but played sparingly in the third period Saturday at Calgary and sat out the game Sunday at Edmonton. He went on the ice Tuesday for the Penguins morning skate but skipped line rushes and power-play drills, and was the first one off the ice."
Pens without Malkin, Orpik for home opener
"The opening night for NHL hockey in Pittsburgh won`t include the Penguins` two great centers and their team-conscience defenseman. Evgeni Malkin (undisclosed lower-body injury), Sidney Crosby (concussion) and Brooks Orpik (abdominal) will not play for the Penguins against the Florida Panthers at Consol Energy Center tonight. Orpik, who has yet to play this season after re-aggravating an injury that required offseason surgery, will miss a fourth straight game. He did not participate in a morning practice. Malkin did practice, but was the first player to leave the ice. His injury is not considered long term, coach Dan Bylsma said today."
Penguins' Malkin off ice for Edmonton contest
"Penguins center Evgeni Malkin was not in the lineup Sunday night in Edmonton only 24 hours after he missed most of the third period in Calgary with an unidentified injury. The nature of the injury — and when it occurred — remains a mystery. Malkin played only one shift on the power play in the third period against the Flames, and coach Dan Bylsma noted following the game that Malkin "just played a lot of hockey and was a little sore." It wasn't determined until Malkin participated in the pregame skate whether he would play against the Oilers. Malkin never skated hard, looking as though he were testing an injury. The Penguins are saying only that Malkin has a "lower-body injury.""
