Stallworth suspended without pay for 2009 season
"NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell did the Browns a huge favor by suspending receiver Donté Stallworth without pay for the 2009 season. It relieves the Browns of a combustible public-relations issue and even costlier consequences to their team salary cap. The Browns can keep Stallworth on the reserve/suspended list through the 2009 season. He will be out of sight and out of mind. He is able to work out on his own, according to modified terms of his house arrest granted by a Florida judge on Tuesday, but the NFL prohibits him from entering the Browns' team facility. They won't release Stallworth because that symbolic move would cost them about $7.6 million on their salary cap. That figure is ..."
NFL suspends Cleveland Browns receiver Donte' Stallworth for 2009 season
"Tony Grossi reports from Cleveland Browns training camp this morning that the NFL has suspended wide receiver Donte' Stallworth for the 2009 season. Tony's story will post shortly. Stallworth was suspended indefinitely after he pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter for killing a pedestrian while driving drunk in Miami Beach, Fla., on March 14. Stallworth met with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Aug. 5 in hopes of being reinstated, a league source confirmed. But the NFL did not make a decision as to what Stallworth's further discipline may be at that time. Miami TV station WPLG reported last week that Stallworth showed Goodell surveillance video, which reportedly shows the pedestrian, Mario ..."
No decision from NFL on status of suspended Donte Stallworth
"Browns receiver Donte Stallworth met with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Wednesday in hopes of being re-instated, a league source confirmed. But no decision was made regarding Stallworth's discipline by the NFL, league spokesman Greg Aiello said. Stallworth is suspended indefinitely for killing a pedestrian while driving drunk in Miami Beach March 14. "We do not comment on the details of the review process, so we decline to comment on the report of [Wednesday's] meeting," Aiello wrote in an email response. "When there is a decision, we will announce. It will not be [Wednesday]." The meeting was first reported by Miami TV station WPLG. The station also reported that Stallworth showed ..."
No decision Cleveland Browns' Stallworth Today
"No decision will be made today regarding Browns receiver Donte Stallworth's discipline by the NFL, league spokesman Greg Aiello said. Stallworth, currently suspended indefinitely for killing a pedestrian while driving drunk, met with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell today in New York in hopes of being reinstated, a league source confirmed. Aiello declined to confirm the meeting in an email response, but said no decision will come down immediately. "We do not comment on the details of the review process, so we decline to comment on the report of today's meeting,'' he wrote. "When there is a decision, we will announce. It will not be today.'' The meeting was first reported by Miami TV station ..."
Stallworth to talk with commish
"Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte' Stallworth, currently under indefinite suspension by the NFL, will meet Wednesday afternoon with commissioner Roger Goodell in Manhattan, according to a source with knowledge of the meeting. It is unclear what Stallworth and Goodell will discuss during their meeting. Stallworth, 28, pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter charges in June after fatally striking Mario Reyes, a 59-year-old construction crane operator, on March 14 in Miami. Stallworth had been drinking at a Miami Beach club just hours before he killed Reyes, who was rushing to catch a bus after finishing work shortly after 7 a.m. Reyes was not in a crosswalk when he was hit. Stallworth had a ..."
Cleveland Browns receiver Donte Stallworth tested positive for marijuana, sources say
"Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth tested positive for marijuana use after the car he was driving struck and killed a pedestrian, law enforcement sources have told the Miami Herald. Stallworth, 28, is serving a 30-day jail sentence as part of his penalty after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter on June 16. He was driving his Bentley when it struck and killed Mario Reyes, 59, on March 14 in Miami. Prosecutors said Stallworth's blood alcohol level of .126 was well above the legal limit when he was tested after the accident. The Herald reported Wednesday that, according to the unidentified sources, the test results also showed traces of marijuana. The results have not yet been ..."
Stallworth's situation can offer league path to help educate players
"To be frank -- and attorney David Cornwell is consistently that -- he does not know how Donte' Stallworth is managing. Cornwell will know more when he visits his client in a Miami jail on Wednesday. "I guess I have to say that Donte' is fine," Cornwell said. "None of this is a surprise to him. He was intimately involved in his defense. But I don't know how he really is. I never killed anyone." Stallworth received a 30-day jail sentence for DUI manslaughter after his car struck and killed Mario Reyes, 59, on March 14 in Miami. Among other penalties after his mid-July release, the Cleveland Browns receiver will be under two years house arrest and eight years probation. He reached an ..."
Slap on wrist to Browns WR Donte' Stallworth is a slap in the face
"This week's news that NFL player Donte' Stallworth was sentenced to 30 days in jail for killing an innocent Florida pedestrian, while driving drunk, is a slap in the face to victims of drunk driving and their families. As a prosecutor, I know all too well that this sentence will perpetuate the myth that these tragedies are accidents, rather than inevitabilities. It will serve as a benchmark for defense attorneys across the country seeking lenient sentences for their clients. The recent legislative gains we've made increasing drunk driving penalties look toothless in light of this miscarriage of justice. In Mr. Stallworth's case, as in all DWI homicides, it must be acknowledged that this ..."
Donte' Stallworth must face wrath of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell
"Browns reciever Donte' Stallworth may have gotten off light this week with just a 30-day sentence after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter for killing a man in Miami this past March. However, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell strongly implied he will be tougher than the courts. There are indications Stallworth could be suspended for the entire 2009 season. Stallworth, who began serving his sentence Tuesday, was suspended indefinitely without pay Thursday by Goodell, who told Stallworth in a letter, "In due course, we will contact your representatives to schedule a meeting with you, after which I will make a final determination of discipline." It's the same approach he took with Michael ..."
Stallworth suspended indefinitely
"Browns receiver Donte' Stallworth was suspended indefinitely by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday, two days after Stallworth pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter and began serving a 30-day jail sentence. In excerpts of his letter to Stallworth released by the NFL, Goodell said Stallworth's ''continued eligibility'' would ''undermine the integrity of and public confidence in our league.'' The commissioner said he will eventually meet with Stallworth and levy a more specific suspension. Until then, Stallworth will be prohibited from visiting the Browns' facility or participating in team activities after he is released from a Miami jail. An indefinite suspension against Adam ''Pacman'' ..."
NFL suspends Cleveland Browns receiver Donté Stallworth indefinitely
"NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell came down hard on Browns receiver Donté Stall worth on Thursday, suspending him indefinitely without pay and warning him that his discipline from the league for killing a pedes trian while driving drunk will be severe. "The conduct reflected in your guilty plea resulted in the tragic loss of life and was inexcusable," Goodell said in a letter to Stall- worth. "While the criminal justice system has determined the legal consequences of this incident, it is my responsibility as NFL commissioner to determine appropriate league discipline for your actions, which have caused irreparable harm to the victim and his family, your club, your fellow players and the ..."
Donté Stallworth's light sentence doesn't fit deadly crime
"What price do you put on a human life? Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Dennis Murphy certainly put the subject up for debate when he accepted a plea bargain between Browns wide receiver Donté Stallworth and the family of the deceased Mario Reyes. Reyes was a 59-year-old crane operator who was killed after being struck by Stallworth's Bentley early in the morning of March 14. Reyes was crossing a causeway on his way to catch a bus. Stallworth stopped, was judged to have an alcohol level of .126, well over the legal limit. Stallworth paid an undisclosed amount of money to the Reyes family, which favored closure in order to avoid a public trial. The former University of Tennessee wide receiver will ..."
Stallworth's lenient sentence irks MADD
"The criminal justice system in Miami fumbled a chance to send a strong message about drunken driving with the laughable plea agreement reached in the DUI manslaughter case of Donte Stallworth. Facing up to 15 years in prison for killing a 59-year-old man after a night of drinking, the Cleveland Browns receiver instead was given a 30-day jail sentence. And five of those days were waived, meaning he'll be out in plenty of time for training camp. Isn't that a relief? "That (lenient sentence) is what we were talking about in the office," said Andrea Rehkamp, executive director of Mothers Against Drunk Driving in Southwest Ohio. "What did Michael Vick get for fighting dogs?" Try 23 months. Of ..."
The courts have ruled on Donte Stallworth; it's time the Browns decide, too
"The Browns' Donte Stallworth will spend 30 days in jail for killing a man in Miami when he drove his Bentley luxury automobile while drunk. The family of Mario Reyes, the dead man, will spend the rest of their lives without a husband and father. This is the result when Bentleys full of money meet the legal system. Sentences are moderated in severity. Incarceration becomes an inconvenience. Stallworth also lost his driver's license and faces two years of house arrest, followed by eight years of probation. Two years is a long time between access to a car so Stallworth can go pick up his laundry. But he can always hand the keys to his $179,000 car to a flunky, provided he promises to be ..."
Vick and Stallworth cases 'apples and oranges', expert says
"The question - repeated countless times on Twitter, sportstalk radio and across the Internet the last 24 hours - goes like this: How can Donte' Stallworth get 30 days while Michael Vick got 23 months? Stallworth, the Cleveland Browns wide receiver, pleaded guilty Tuesday to DUI manslaughter for killing pedestrian Mario Reyes while driving drunk in his black 2005 Bentley in Miami. Stallworth also reached a confidential financial settlement with the family of the 59-year-old construction worker. Vick served 19 months in federal prison for bankrolling a dogfighting operation, and is under home confinement until July 20. The Falcons released their former superstar quarterback last week. The ..."
Browns' Stallworth sentenced to 30 days
"The attorney for Dont Stallworth said he sees no reason the Browns receiver will not be able to resume his NFL career after serving a 30-day jail sentence for DUI manslaughter and a likely suspension by the league. Chris Lyons, a former Miami-Dade (Fla.) prosecutor who represents Stallworth, has no idea how harsh a penalty NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will impose. Stallworth, 28, pleaded guilty Tuesday morning before Judge Dennis Murphy and was immediately taken into custody. A league spokesman said Goodell is expected to act before training camp starts. The Browns report July 31, with their first practice Aug. 1. Operating under the substance-abuse and personal-conduct policies, Goodell ..."
Browns fans stunned by Donte Stallworth's 30-day jail term for DUI manslaughter
"Even diehard Browns fans were stunned that wide receiver Donte Stallworth might be able to suit up again after just a month in jail for killing a man with his car while drunk behind the wheel. "Thirty days ...? Wow," said Richard Manco II, president of the Browns Backers of Brunswick, who was beside himself when told of Tuesday's sentencing in Miami. "What if that was you or me? We wouldn't have 30 days. That's all he got was 30 days? Unbelievable." Stallworth, 28, who spent most of his first year with the Browns last season sidelined with injuries, began serving his jail sentence after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter. Stallworth also reached a confidential financial settlement with ..."
Browns receiver Donte Stallworth will serve 30 days after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter charge
"Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte' Stallworth today received a 30-day jail sentence after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter in a Miami courtroom, according to the Associated Press. Stallworth was charged in the death of Mario Reyes, a pedestrian who was struck and killed by Stallworth's Bentley on March 14 in Miami Beach. According to the AP report, the plea deal calls for Stallworth to also serve 10 years of probation and do 1,000 community service hours. Stallworth had faced four to 15 years in prison. Stallworth also reached a confidential financial settlement with the Reyes' family. A person close to the negotiations told The Association Press about the agreement on the condition ..."
Donté Stallworth will plead guilty today to DUI manslaughter
"Browns receiver Donté Stallworth will plead guilty today to DUI manslaughter as part of a plea agreement, a league source said Monday night. On June 4, Stallworth entered a plea of not guilty, and a pre-trial meeting had been set for July 7. He was facing a sentence of four to 15 years in prison if convicted. The guilty plea likely means Stallworth, 28, will spend some time in jail. It is not known yet what disciplinary action the NFL will take, but the league will start to take action after today's plea agreement is an nounced. The story was first re ported on profootbal ltalk.com. Miami-Dade police say Stallworth was driv ing drunk when he struck 59-year-old pedestrian Mario Reyes on ..."
Stallworth may get break on manslaughter charge
"Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte' Stallworth(notes) could avoid a DUI manslaughter conviction from the March 14 accident that killed a Miami man even if he is found to have been impaired while driving, according to two NFL sources and two Florida-based attorneys. Stallworth, who is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, may still have to serve time in jail and reach a civil settlement with the family of Mario Reyes, who was killed when Stallworth hit him in the early morning hours of March 14. However, Stallworth's jail time could be only a matter of two or three months rather than the possibility of up to 15 years in prison under state law, two NFL sources said this week. Beyond that, ..."
Cleveland Browns' Donte Stallworth's arraignment delayed
"Browns receiver DonteStallworth's arraignment on DUI manslaughter charges has been postponed a month until May 21, Miami-Dade prosecutors said Thursday. The delay came at the request of prosecutors "to allow us time to complete our investigation,'' Assistant State Attorney Pat Trese explained to a judge Thursday morning. Miami Beach Police said Stallworth, 28, was driving drunk when he struck and killed pedestrian Mario Reyes, 59, with his Bentley on Mar. 14. "We just want to make sure that everything is absolutely correct,'' said State Attorney's spokesman Ed Griffith. Stallworth, who's out on $200,000 bond, did not appear at Thursday's hearing and will not have to do so on May 21st. In a ..."
The Stallworth case another unlearned lesson about alcohol's dangers
"Donte Stallworth, the Browns' wide receiver, pushes all of our hot buttons. He is a rich, young athlete. He was driving a Bentley, the premium ride for the athlete who wants everyone to know he has it made, when he struck and killed a pedestrian, a crane operator named Mario Reyes, in Miami. Tests revealed Stallworth was driving drunk. He was also speeding. He had collected a $4 million bonus from the Browns the day before. He went out to celebrate. Instead he ended one life, damaged the lives of his victim's family, and probably ruined his own life as he knows it. He has been charged with drunk driving and manslaughter. If convicted, he faces a minimum of four years in prison, a maximum ..."
Stallworth linked to past woes
"Browns receiver Donté Stallworth was already in the NFL's substance-abuse program before being charged with DUI manslaughter, according to a report, meaning he most likely would face stiffer sanctions from the NFL if convicted. In March 2007, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Stallworth was a participant in the league's substance-abuse program and faced a suspension if he violated the conditions again. Asked about the report a week later when he signed with the Patriots, Stallworth told the Associated Press, "All that stuff is in the past. There was a situation a couple years ago. There's nothing now that's going on that will affect me preparing for helping this team." Stallworth, ..."
Stallworth out on bond for DUI manslaughter
"Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth surrendered in a Miami courtroom this morning on charges of DUI manslaughter in connection with the death of pedestrian Mario Reyes. Stallworth, 28, made a brief appearance in front of Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Dennis Murphy before being led away in handcuffs to be booked at the jail. He was released a few hours later on $200,000 bail. Holding his mother Donna's hand outside the Miami-Dade county jail around noon, Stallworth told a group of reporters and cameras, "I just want to extend my condolences to the Reyes family. My prayers are with them. I have full confidence and faith in the legal process.'' Stallworth's attorney, Christopher Lyons, a former ..."

Stallworth was above the legal blood-alcohol limit of .08 when he struck and killed pedestrian Mario Reyes, 59, with his Bentley on March 14 at 7:17 a.m., a source told CBS-4 in Miami. Stallworth, 28, has been in Cleveland working out in the Browns offseason program while authorities await results of his toxicology report. Reyes, who was about 20 feet from a crosswalk, was crossing the MacArthur Causeway to catch a bus after working the overnight shift as a crane operator. Traveling 50 ..."
Browns not likely to recoup any of Donte Stallworth's roster bonus
"If Donte Stallworth can't perform for the Browns in 2009, he still might be able to keep the $4.75 million roster bonus he earned the day before his car struck and killed a pedestrian in Miami Beach. Even if the Browns had specific forfeiture language in Stallworth's contract, the players union would contend that the collective bargaining agreement supercedes it, based on similar cases. "They will have to fight to get it back," said one team executive at the NFL owners meetings. "Good luck," said another. Stallworth has not been charged in the March 14 accident. Recouping bonus money from players was made tougher for teams when the CBA was extended in 2006. Teams were limited to recouping ..."
Stallworth returns to Cleveland as Miami Beach police await test results
"While Miami Beach police await a toxicology report on Donté Stallworth, the Browns receiver has returned to Cleveland and has been working out in the team's voluntary off-season program, his attorney, Chris Lyons, told The Plain Dealer. Police said it's unlikely they'll receive the report over the weekend, meaning charges might be filed against Stallworth on Monday or Tuesday at the earliest. "Donté reported to the Browns on Wednesday morning, and he's been welcomed back by everyone - his teammates, the management, the coaching staff, and they've all been extremely supportive," Lyons said. "It's been good for him to get back to work." Lyons said Stallworth remains grief-stricken over the ..."

Police wont confirm report that Stallworth was drunk
"A Miami television station reported this afternoon that Miami Beach Police have released a toxicology report showing that Browns receiver Donte Stallworth's blood alcohol level was over the legal limit when he hit and killed a pedestrian last week, but a Miami Beach police spokesman refuted that report. WSVN-FOX 7 reported that Stallworth's blood alcohol level was .12, which is over the legal limit of .08. Miami Beach Detective Juan Sanchez said, "That has not been released or confirmed by us. They went with that story without confirming it with us.'' Sanchez added that although results of the toxicology report are due Friday, "we will not be releasing those results until we make an ..."

Browns' Stallworth inactive for game
"Browns starting receiver Donte Stallworth was inactive for the Ravens game with his pulled quad muscle and Syndric Steptoe started in his place.

Stallworth was inactive the first four games of the season with the quad, and was limited last week in Jacksonville after aggravating it the week before. In three games, he has seven catches for 56 yards, including a 5-yard TD in Jacksonville. Stallworth was limited in practice during the week and was listed as questionable."

Browns' Stallworth inactive vs. Ravens
"The Ravens' depleted secondary caught a break when Cleveland Browns receiver Donte Stallworth was deactivated for today's game. Stallworth is out with a quadriceps injury. Backup Syndric Steptoe will take Stallworth's place in the starting lineup. Ravens starting cornerbacks Chris McAlister (knee) and Samari Rolle (neck) are also out. Fabian Washington and Frank Walker will replace them."
Good timing for Stallworth
"Receiver Donte' Stallworth could be the biggest beneficiary of the bye week. Yet to play after pulling his right quadriceps in pregame warmups for the opener Sept. 7, Stallworth felt he was ''pretty close'' to being ready for Sunday's victory at Cincinnati, but ''it just wasn't quite there.'' The Browns are off until a Monday Night Football appearance Oct. 13 at home against the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants. ''I didn't feel like I was really ready to beat anyone,'' Stallworth said. ''I can run straight ahead fine, but the cutting and [getting] in and out of my breaks wasn't quite there yet. My biggest thing was trying to be smart and not become a liability out there or ..."
Stallworth says he will make his Browns debut against Giants
"The bye week comes at an opportune time for receiver Donte' Stallworth, who said Monday he'll be ready to make his Browns debut against the New York Giants in the big Monday night game Oct. 13 at Cleveland Browns Stadium. "I was pretty close to being ready [Sunday], but it just wasn't quite there," he said. "My biggest thing is I didn't want to become a liability, so I feel like now with this bye week, it gives me an extra week to be ready and try to strengthen everything. I'm excited to take my cheerleading outfit off and put on a Cleveland Browns uniform." He said he thinks his experience can be a factor. "It can definitely help out some of the younger guys, as far as being able to ..."
Donte Stallworth's return to Cleveland Browns might be stalled
"The Browns have been eagerly awaiting the return of receiver Donte' Stallworth from a pulled quad muscle, but he made no promises Wednesday that he'll be ready for the Ravens game. "I'm hoping that I can get out there [Sunday], but I don't want to be out there and let my pride get in the way of me thinking I can go out there and can't, and in reality hurt the team more than I'd like to," he said. "It's a matter of me being able to contribute as opposed to being out there and injuring myself again or hurting the team at all." Stallworth sat out Wednesday's practice and will be a longshot to play if he doesn't practice today. He missed the first two games after pulling the quad in warm-ups ..."
Sprain still nagging Stallworth
"It sounds likely that a strained quadriceps will keep Browns receiver Donte' Stallworth out for at least a third consecutive week. Hurt in pregame warm-ups before the Sept. 7 opener, Stallworth missed practice again Wednesday and did not sound optimistic about playing Sunday as the Browns (0-2) visit the Baltimore Ravens (1-0). ''I'm OK for now,'' Stallworth said. ''I'm hoping I can get out there. I don't want to be out there and let my pride get in the way of me thinking I can go out there and can't, and in reality hurt the team more than I would like to. ''It's a matter of me being able to contribute as opposed to being out there and injuring myself again or hurting the team at all.'' ..."
Stallworth has MRI on quad; results come Wednesday.
"Wide receiver Donte Stallworth underwent an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of what's now thought to be a quadriceps strain. Results will not be made public until Wednesday. When Stallworth first hurt himself in pregame warm-ups Sunday, it was thought to be a pulled groin muscle. But after further exams, the diagnosis was changed. Coach Romeo Crennel admitted Monday that losing Stallworth just before the game was a blow. "It hurt us a little bit because he had shown during training camp that he was a guy that could make some plays for us and we would be able to incorporate into the offense and be able to help us a little bit," Crennel said. The coach said Stallworth was just ..."
Stallworth suffers pulled hamstring
