Donnie Avery News & Rumors

Have the Rams improved the WR position this season?
"QUESTION: Through training camp and two preseason games so far, have you seen much improvement in the Rams WR corps over last season? JIM THOMAS Well, if you could tell me that the group was healthy – and could stay healthy – it would be an emphatic yes. But who knows if Donnie Avery and Danario Alexander can stay healthy for 16 games – or close to it. Same goes for Mardy Gilyard. Mike-Sims Walker will help, but he's had only a couple weeks of practice time and still needs to get in sync with Sam Bradford. The rookies, Austin Pettis and Greg Salas, haven't shown a whole lot. Salas was out with a hamstring injury for a while, but made a couple of nice catches on the fourth-quarter field"
Avery anxious for some action
"The catcalls were predictable, but humorous nonetheless, when Donnie Avery returned to the practice field following an absence of about a week and a half. "A couple of guys were like, 'Oh, snap! No. 17 is out from the dead,' " Avery said. Hey, teammates will be teammates. But Avery, who wears jersey No. 17, turned the jeers into cheers later in Wednesday's practice at Rams Park. After diving to the turf to corral a low throw, several teammates shouted encouragement. I see you D.A.! ... All right, D.A.! "That's kinda nice to know that they're rooting for me, and they're on the same page as I am," Avery said. Never mind the same page. Avery would just like to get on the same field with his"
Avery's demise makes Bradford's job tougher
"Sam Bradford 's stellar preseason showing at New England showed new majority Rams owner Stan Kroenke that there could be hope for this NFL team after all. But Donnie Avery 's season-ending injury offered a reality check, reminding Kroenke and everybody else that the Rams are still the Rams. They have a LOT of issues to resolve after winning just six games in the last three seasons. The Rams feared the worst when Avery went down Thursday night. The injury looked bad when it happened. Initial examinations suggested the worst. Coach Steve Spagnuolo hoped for better news . . . but around Rams Park, such miracles have been scarce in recent seasons. As expected, Avery's ACL tear will"
Spags: Avery has "a significant knee injury"
"As anyone familiar with the team knows, the St. Louis Rams aren't exactly swimming in wide receivers. And they lost one of their starters, Donnie Avery, on Thursday night to what appears to be a serious knee injury. "Donnie probably has a significant knee injury," coach Steve Spagnuolo said after the Rams' 36-35 preseason victory over New England. "We'll know a little bit more after we get the tests (on Sunday). He was a little bit down, and rightfully so. Hopefully, it's not as bad as we think.""
They'll catch each other's act
"St. Louis Rams receiver Donnie Avery will never forget the first time he met his favorite NFL player and role model, Texans receiver Andre Johnson. "We were at this place in Rice Village, and I saw him chatting with some friends," Avery said during a break in preparations for Sunday's game against the Texans. "I stopped and said, 'Excuse me. I'm Donnie Avery. I go to the University of Houston. I just wanted to tell you you're a beast out there.'" Avery, who played at Hastings before becoming one of the nation's best receivers for the Cougars, has patterned himself after Johnson — on and off the field. "That was my first time to meet an NFL player," Avery said. "He was the most humble"
Starks puts Allen on sack diet
"This was the game you figured Steelers coach Mike Tomlin would give left tackle Max Starks plenty of help. Minnesota Vikings All-Pro defensive end Jared Allen, who embarrasses offensive linemen and devours quarterbacks, came to Heinz Field on a beautiful fall Sunday afternoon to face his offseason workout buddy and pad his gaudy stat line. Allen departed with no sacks and the Vikings' first loss as the Steelers took an exciting 27-17 win. In the end, it didn't matter that the Steelers' defense scored more touchdowns than the Steelers' offense, or that Minnesota dominated time of possession by 13 minutes. All that matters to Tomlin is that the Steelers improved to 5-2 while toppling"
Rams get good news as Avery has MRI exam on injured hip
"The Rams had every reason to fear the worst when wide receiver Donnie Avery fell hard on his left hip and limped to the sideline early in the second quarter Sunday. "It's the same hip I played on last year with a crack in it," Avery said after the 23-20 overtime loss at Jacksonville. "I'm just hoping for something positive." The fracture, suffered early in training camp in Mequon, Wis., kept Avery out for most of the preseason. It never fully healed during the regular season, although Avery amassed 53 catches, 674 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie. Good news arrived Monday: An MRI exam showed no crack this time. Coach Steve Spagnuolo said Avery would be day-to-day this week, as the"
Avery apologizes for dance
"After grabbing a fourth-quarter pass from Marc Bulger and slipping into the end zone Sunday, wide receiver Donnie Avery launched into a victory dance that coach Steve Spagnuolo said he "wasn't real fond of." Avery said he apologized to his teammates Monday "for making it about me and not about the team.""
Rams get hit with bad news on Avery
"In terms of experience and proven depth, wide receiver may be the one position where the Rams can least afford a significant injury. So the news that wide receiver Donnie Avery could miss four to six weeks with a foot injury is a blow to the team's early season offensive hopes. "The MRI showed more than we thought," coach Steve Spagnuolo said through a team spokesman after Sunday afternoon's special teams workout. "It's probably a four- to six-week injury." Sources told the Post-Dispatch that Avery has suffered a stress fracture in his left foot. Such injuries often require nothing more than time to heal. Even under the four- to six-week outlook, Avery would be sidelined the entire"
Rams' Avery out with soreness in foot
"The St. Louis Rams expect to be without starting receiver Donnie Avery for four to six weeks after the second-year pro suffered a foot injury, coach Steve Spagnuolo told reporters Sunday. An MRI showed more significant damage than expected after Avery experienced soreness in his left foot Saturday morning, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The Rams lack established depth at wide receiver. Keenan Burton, Ronald Curry and Laurent Robinson appear to be the top three options beyond Avery."
