David West News & Rumors

Indiana Pacers' top players not enough against Miami Heat
"Indiana's OWN "big three" — Danny Granger, David West and Roy Hibbert — asserted itself early in Game 6 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Thursday night. But when the Pacers abandoned their inside game, Miami's Dwyane Wade and the Heat took over and ended the series with a 105-93 win. "They gave it everything they had and it wasn't enough," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. The three anchored a 10-2 Pacers run to start the game. West — who scored just eight and 10 points in Games 4 and 5, respectively — dropped eight points within the game's first eight minutes."
Roy Hibbert welcomes David West's help
"Center Roy Hibbert was the Indiana Pacers' lone inside presence his first three seasons. That load eased substantially this season. Coach Frank Vogel said nearly half of the team's offense has been run through power forward David West in the post. West is averaging 16.8 points in their NBA Eastern Conference first-round playoff series against the Orlando Magic. West's offensive production has freed Hibbert to focus on defense. Hibbert has blocked 17 shots in the series, including a franchise playoff record of nine in Game 1. He also is averaging 11.8 rebounds a game."
Pacers find a go-to player in David West
"The Indiana Pacers' go-to player wasn't their leading scorer during the regular season. He's not their most athletic player or even their best defender. The Pacers' go-to player is the backbone of the team. He's the one always talking to his teammates on the court or giving suggestions to the coaching staff. The Pacers' go-to player, in fact, is the most unselfish player on their roster, and he's the one determined to make sure he leads them in the playoffs."
David West helps lead Pacers back to NBA elite
"David West spent most of the first eight seasons of his career as an offensive focal point for New Orleans. The power forward passed up the opportunity to sign with the Boston Celtics and their three future Hall of Famers to join the up-and-coming Indiana Pacers in the offseason. On some nights, West is the first option. Other nights, he's the fifth. That's fine with the 31-year-old West. He left his ego at his offseason home in North Carolina because he wanted to fit in and provide leadership on a team that has been deficient in that area for years. West has done both while becoming the backbone of a Pacers team enjoying its best season since 2003-04. The Pacers, winners of seven straight"
Pacers' West holds no grudges with Hornets
"Indiana Pacers forward David West isn't making much out of his former employer visiting Bankers Life Fieldhouse tonight. For starters, the New Orleans Hornets hardly resemble the franchise for which West was a two-time All-Star. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, West made the decision to depart -- the ninth-year pro saw an opportunity to play with an up-and-coming team as opposed to sticking around for a rebuilding project."
Pacers: Vogel gives West green light
"David West had the ball in the position Indiana Pacers coach Frank Vogel wanted. West backed down Denver Nuggets forward Al Harrington, looking like he was going to make a move to the basket for a tying shot in the final seconds Saturday. With Nuggets guard Corey Brewer lurking nearby, West, not wanting to force the shot, tried to pass the ball to Darren Collison."
Context put back in place
"Ray Allen confirmed last night he lobbied for David West to join the Celtics, while saying, contrary to some published reports, he did not criticize West's decision to accept an offer from the Pacers. "Unfortunately, those comments were taken out of context,'' Allen said before an 87-74 loss to the Pacers last night. "I was speaking in generalities, and by any means I don't know what his situation is or was and why he made his decision.'' West passed up a three- or four-year deal worth about $9 million annually with the Celtics to sign a two-year, $20 million contract with Indiana. "I wasn't referring to him going for the money, or whatever his ultimate decision was,'' Allen said. "When it"
David West disputes nixing Green
"As much as everyone from Ray Allen to Celtics fans would have wished it to be different, David West got dressed in the visiting locker room last night as a member of the Indiana Pacers. Allen, quoted in an ESPN.com story as criticizing West's decision to sign with the Pacers as a free agent instead of holding on for a deal that would have landed him with the Celtics, said last night that he has since made peace with West through a financial adviser both men share. Allen added that though he attempted to recruit West, his comments questioning the forward's motivation were misconstrued. "Unfortunately those comments were taken out of context," said the C's guard before last night's 87-74"
West delivers in the clutch in win over Raptors
"Welcome to Indiana, David West. West, the Pacers' primary offseason acquisition, needed only two games to make his presence felt at the end of a close contest. He didn't do it just on the offensive end of the court; he did it on defense, too. West made a 14-foot jump shot with 9 seconds remaining to hold off the surging Toronto Raptors and help the Pacers win north of the border for the first time in almost four years, 90-85 on Wednesday at the Air Canada Centre. "A good win for our club," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "We made some big plays down the stretch. Danny Granger had a couple of 3s, and David West was huge on both ends: his toughness on the defensive end and his shot-making on"
West defends signing with Pacers
"Indiana Pacers power forward David West has heard what Boston Celtics guard Ray Allen said about him. Allen told ESPN.com earlier this week that he was "shocked" West passed up an opportunity to play for the Celtics to sign with the Pacers. "He doesn't know me personally," West said. "We have a business associate that we share, but what they're dealing with over there is a lot deeper than David West.""
West probably won't make Pacers debut until next week
"Power forward David West's debut with the Indiana Pacers may have to wait until next week. Coach Frank Vogel said Wednesday that he'll likely hold West out of the Pacers' preseason opener against the Chicago Bulls at Conseco Fieldhouse on Friday. "It's only because the game will just be days after he signed with our team," Vogel said. "He's still learning the system and he's got to improve his conditioning because he was holding himself back some since he was a free agent." West, who signed a two-year, $20 million deal Tuesday, has practiced only twice with his new teammates. He stayed late with four other players after Wednesday's practice so he could continue to get a firm grasp of"
Pacers announce signing of power forward David West
"The Indiana Pacers announced the signing of power forward David West today. West, who spent the first eight years of his career with the New Orleans Hornets, agreed to a two-year, $20 million deal over the weekend. "I'm excited to be here," West said at a press conference. West is expected to participate in the team's second practice of the day this evening. West, who had knee surgery in April, will eventually replace Tyler Hansbrough as the team's starting power forward."
Pacers sign free agent power forward David West
"The Indiana Pacers' patience during the first part of the free-agency period has paid off. David West, the Pacers' likely starting power forward, agreed to a two-year, $20 million deal Sunday afternoon. "David looks at the Pacers as a good young team with a lot of potential," said West's agent, Lance Young. "He feels his experience and leadership will help a team like the Pacers. He was excited Jeff Foster re-signed with them. He feels like Indiana is the best spot for him and his family.""
Pacers ready to swoop in if Celtics can't land West
"As free-agent forward David West and the Boston Celtics work to complete a difficult sign-and-trade deal, the Indiana Pacers have positioned themselves to sign the power forward should talks with the Celtics flatline on Sunday, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. The Celtics have been discussing a four-year deal with West, sources said. Still, Boston is limited under sign-and-trade rules with how high it can go with an offer. The Celtics can offer the first three years in the $24 million to $25 million range, but the fourth year would likely not be fully guaranteed. Several sources believed there would be a resolution Sunday. Indiana has been discussing a two-year deal with West but with a"
New Orleans Hornets said to be trading David West to Boston Celtics
"While one New Orleans Hornets All-Star awaits his fate, another could be on the way out. The Hornets are negotiating a sign-and-trade agreement with Boston that would send two-time All-Star forward David West to the Celtics, league sources said. Some reports have the Hornets acquiring center Jermaine O'Neal in the deal, but it could not be confirmed Saturday night. West, 31, opted out of a contract that would've paid him $7.5 million this season. The Hornets had pursued re-signing him. Meanwhile, guard Chris Paul, who played with West for six seasons, is awaiting word on a second attempt at a trade that would send him to the Lakers. The Hornets would liked to have had West back, and Paul's"
Source: Celtics close to deal with All-Star big man West
"A source briefed on discussions Friday evening said that the Boston Celtics are close to a deal with free agent power forward David West, who has been with the New Orleans Hornets since being drafted in 2003. West, 31, was expected to be one of the top free agents in this year's class, but he is coming off of a torn ACL suffered late last season in a game against Utah. West has diligently rehabbed his injury in North Carolina last summer, but teams have been slow to make significant offers to him."
Hornets' free agents David West, Carl Landry and Jason Smith apparently in demand
"The agents for former Hornets power forwards David West, Carl Landry and Jason Smith both said Sunday that the team seems very interested in bringing all three players back for this season. However, Lance Young, who represents West, and Mark Bartelstein, the agent for Landry and Smith, said that their clients are in high demand throughout the league. NBA general managers, as well as coaches, reportedly can begin contacting players today in an attempt to recruit their services. The scheduled beginning of the compressed free-agency signing period is Friday."
New Orleans Hornets are interested in David West and Carl Landry
"With only five players currently under contract and a free-agency signing period beginning on Friday, the agents for former New Orleans Hornets' power forwards David West, Carl Landry and Jason Smith both said Sunday that the team wants all three to return this season. However, Lance Young, who represents West, and Mark Bartelstein, the agent for Landry and Smith, said that their clients were in high demand throughout the league. NBA general managers and coaches reportedly can begin contacting players personally today in an attempt to recruit their services. Bartelstein said Sunday that Hornets general manager Dell Demps – who could not be reached for comment – has also inquired about two"
David West given full medical clearance by doctor
"Just six months after undergoing surgery to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, longtime New Orleans Hornets forward David West on Thursday received full medical clearance to resume his NBA career. West opted out of the final year of his contract with the Hornets on June 27 and will be a free agent when the league and the players association agree to a new collective bargaining agreement. "Cleared today by the DOC…Kne is Gucci!!! Back at it…," was the pronouncement on West's Twitter account Thursday afternoon."
Is David West the missing piece for another Spurs title run?
"There will be a compressed free-agent signing period once the lockout ends. Teams will be scrambling to add players at a furious pace to get ready for the upcoming season. One of the prime players available will be New Orleans power forward David West, who would fill a need with the Spurs considering their age inside with key players like Tim Duncan and Antonio McDyess. Alex Kennedy of the web site Hoops World.com reports that West could be headed to Indiana to join the Pacers' talented stable of young players. Kennedy also said that the Pacers could be interested in Denver power forward Nene to fill a similar role with the team if they can't get West."
West hints that title shot may be as important as money in new contract
"David West apparently noticed all the fun his former teammate Tyson Chandler was having during the NBA Finals. That's led West to consider a shot at playing for his first championship as a leading component of where he ends up in his looming free agency. West is forbidden to talk to teams while the lockout stretches out. But he's hopeful his New Orleans teammate, point guard Chris West, also noticed what Chandler accomplished after helping Dallas to its first NBA title. "He's got the same mindset I have, just wanting to win," West told NBA.com. "Dallas getting to the Finals and wining it all, having a guy (Chandler) that was a part of our core just a few years ago be on that team, it did"
Report: David West eyes October return
"Back in late March, New Orleans Hornets forward David West tore the ACL in his left knee, a devastating injury at a tough time, as it happened just before the team's playoff push and months before he was set to hit the open market as a free agent. Shortly before the lockout was imposed, West decided to opt out of the final year of his contract -- he would have been paid $7.53 million -- to become a free agent despite the injury concern. On Monday, NBA.com reported that West is right on schedule in his rehabilitation. Two to three times a day, five or six days a week, West is at the Athletic Performance Center in Raleigh, making rapid progress in his return. After his last visit two"
David West mends knee during lockout
"Few NBA players are facing more uncertainty than David West. Like the rest of his pro basketball brethren, West is not sure when the 2011-12 season will begin, or if there will even be one. An unsigned free agent, the two-time NBA All-Star and former Garner High standout isn't sure for which team he'll be playing. He could return to the New Orleans Hornets when all is said and done, or he could be headed elsewhere. But coming off surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament, West is not sure how wary teams will be of signing a 6-foot-9 power forward who turns 31 in August. "It's a tricky time right now" said West, who has been rehabilitating his damaged left knee at the Athletic"
New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul says David West's plans don't affect his future here
"New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul reiterated his respect for teammate David West's decision to walk away from the final year of his contract with the team this week, but said West's move might not affect Paul's future here. "Hopefully, it won't," Paul said Thursday at one of his foundation's events with children at Tulane University. "Like I said, D-West is like a brother to me. Anything he does, I'm always going to support him. I would love to play with him. He's the only guy who's been on my team every year I've been in the NBA. But at the end of the day, he has to make decisions that are best for him and his family. "His decision was he just opted out. It doesn't mean he's not coming"
New Orleans Hornets' Chris Paul says he hopes David West returns
"Two summers ago, New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul watched as one of his closest friends, center Tyson Chandler, was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats, effectively shutting down the alley-oop combination that came to be known as the "Crescent City Connection." Days removed from the possible departure of longtime teammate and friend David West, who opted out of the last year of his contract with the Hornets last Friday (the official announcement was Monday), Paul said Thursday he hasn't pondered the prospect of never again taking the floor with West at his side. "I don't try to think about it," Paul said Thursday at Tulane, where his foundation sponsored a 3-mile walk for children aimed at"
Chris Paul has one less weapon at his disposal after David West opts out
"Another day, another domino that didn't fall New Orleans' way, another reason for each sliver of hope to lessen that Chris Paul will remain a Hornet beyond the next NBA trade deadline. As of Monday, New Orleans' Batman has no Robin. He has no trusted sidekick, no teammate he feels nearly as comfortable deferring to when less than five seconds remain in regulation and the Hornets trail by one or two points, no peer he has seen make multiple, contested winning shots and post his numbers with machine-like efficiency. Forget that David West didn't rule out New Orleans as he opted out of his contract and became a free agent, and the franchise's assurance that it wants to re-sign the power"
Pacers and Nets want David West?
"New Orleans Hornets power forward David West has opted out of his contract for next season in order to become a free agent on July 1. However, the current CBA also ends then so he will be in limbo as to where he'll end up till a new CBA Is agreed upon. That will give his knee time to heal from surgery as well. Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Indiana Pacers and New Jersey Nets "are two teams with significant salary-cap space and a strong interest in signing West, league sources said." One thing the Nets have going for them, Wojnarowski points out, is that West grew up in Jersey "and has always been fond of the metropolitan New York area.""
How would David West look in Silver and Black?
"David West took a risk Monday when he announced he was opting out of his current contract with the New Orleans Hornets to file for free agency. It's a gamble for West in a couple of respects. He's coming off surgery after tearing the ACL in his left knee on March 24. And he's also putting aside a chance to earn $7.5 million this season with the Hornets in order to test the free agent market in perhaps the league's most uncertain economic time ever. West was in the midst of having a quality season when he went down with his knee injury, averaging a team-leading 18.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game for the Hornets before missing the final 10 games of the season and the playoffs. He's been"
David West and Aaron Gray opt out of their contracts with Hornets
"Last Wednesday, the day before the NBA draft, Hornets General Manager Dell Demps said he envisioned the team having five to seven roster spots open next year. At the close of business Monday, New Orleans had five players under contract, with a roster maximum of 15. Hornets power forward David West, the senior member of the team who joined in 2003 as a first-round draft choice, confirmed he was opting out of the last year of his contract, walking away from $7.5 million to test the free-agent market whenever that signing period might begin. Hours later, backup center Aaron Gray informed the team he was opting out of the last year of his deal, leaving $1.124 million on the table as he tests"
West likely done in New Orleans
"With forward David West deciding to forego the final year of his contract and become a free agent, he probably has played his final game for the New Orleans Hornets. West will be one of the premier free agents on the market this offseason, after opting out of the $7.5 million owed him in the final year of his contract. West's agent, Lance Young, informed New Orleans GM Dell Demps of the decision Monday morning. His decision could be a prelude to the eventual departure of All-Star guard Chris Paul, who has played his entire career with West in New Orleans. The Hornets might have to trade Paul next season before he reaches free agency in 2012 and start a complete rebuilding process. Indiana"
David West says he's opting out of final year of his contract
"New Orleans Hornets forward David West confirmed Monday morning he'll opt out of the final year of his contract with the team and test NBA free agency. In a phone conversation, West said he's not ruling out re-signing with the Hornets, but said "I want to win and win big." West said his decision to walk away from $7.5 million in he last year of his contract was in his mind all along, even before tearing the ACL in his left knee on March 24. He had reconstructive surgery on April 12 and has been re-habbing the knee twice daily at his off-season home Raleigh, N.C. The Hornets could still offer West an extension before the current collective bargaining agreement expires at midnight on"
Sources: David West to be free agent
"Despite suffering a season-ending knee injury in March, New Orleans Hornets power forward David West is expected to opt out of the final season of his contract this week and become a free agent, according to sources close to the situation. West has a June 30 deadline in his contract to notify the Hornets whether he will invoke next season's $7.5 million salary or opt for free agency, but sources say that the Hornets are already bracing for West to make his opt-out decision official before Thursday's buzzer. The Hornets have anticipated all along that West would become a free agent, even though the former All-Star was forced to undergo surgery in April to repair a torn anterior cruciate"
Hornets' David West still undecided about his future
"With less than one week remaining before a deadline to decide whether to opt out of the final year of his contract, New Orleans Hornets forward David West said Friday he still hasn't decided to stay or go. West, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee March 24 in a game at Utah and had reconstructive surgery April 12, can walk away from $7.5 million next season and test the free-agent market. He must decide by June 30. "I'm going to talk to (the Hornets) later in the day," West, a two-time All-Star, said Friday morning. "I just want to make sure I make the clearest decision possible as to what the next step in my career will be. I'll talk to them later, maybe throw some"
Dell Demps waiting on word from forward David West on possible opt-out
"Injured New Orleans Hornets forward David West continues to rehabilitate his surgically repaired left knee at his off-season home in Raleigh, N.C., and General Manager Dell Demps said Wednesday he thinks it's good that West is waiting until closer to the June 30 deadline to inform the team whether he'll opt out of his contract. West can choose to walk away from the $7.5 million he's owed next season and test free agency, though he's coming off April surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee injured March 24. Sources close to West said a decision will probably come this weekend. "I think he's looking at all his options," Demps said. "Whether he opts in or opts out, our"
David West will consider opting out of contract as deadline nears
"New Orleans Hornets forward David West is continuing to rehabilitate his surgically repaired left knee at his offseason home in Raleigh, N.C., working five to six days per week, sometimes undergoing multiple sessions daily, West's agent, Lance Young, said Wednesday. West underwent surgery to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee April 12, 19 days after injuring the knee in a game March 24 at Utah. "It's going really well," Young said. "I think it's way ahead of schedule right now. He's been in Raleigh full-time, and he's on his way with good rehab and feeling really good about things." Young, of Washington, D.C.-based Octagon Sports, said West, who can opt out of the final"
David West's future with New Orleans Hornets will be clear by June's end
"A summer of uncertainty is in the offing for the New Orleans Hornets, though one order of business should be known before the collective bargaining agreement expires June 30. Power forward David West, who is rehabbing from surgery to repair a torn left ACL, must notify New Orleans of his intention on whether to opt out of the final year of his contract by that date. If West does not exercise his option by then, he'll be with the Hornets next season, whenever that might begin. West could not be reached for comment Wednesday, and Hornets General Manager Dell Demps said he has not yet heard from West about his plans for next season. "It's all on David," Demps said. "It's all David. Nothing on"
Hornets forward David West undergoes successful ACL reconstruction
"New Orleans Hornets forward David West underwent surgery to repair his torn left anterior cruciate ligament in New York on Tuesday. The procedure, which according to the team was successful, was performed by Dr. David Altchek. West suffered the season-ending injury on March 24 in a game against Utah in Salt Lake City. Prior to the surgery, West was undergoing physical therapy aimed at strengthening the knee as much as possible before the repair."
David West set for knee surgery
"Hornets forward David West will undergo reconstructive knee surgery today to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament, sources said Monday night. West suffered the injury at Utah on a driving dunk with 22.5 seconds remaining March 24. He's expected to have six to 10 months of rehabilitation before possibly returning. Coincidently, the Hornets played the Jazz for the first time since the injury Monday night at the New Orleans Arena. "You almost forget about it until you watch the film,'' Hornets Coach Monty Williams said before playing the Jazz. "You remember that's the game where you lost one of your anchors. "It's part of the game, and you hate to see it happen to a guy in his"
Hornets forward David West out for season with torn left ACL
"New Orleans Hornets forward David West tore his left anterior cruciate ligament Thursday night when he landed awkwardly after dunking against the Utah Jazz in the fourth quarter. West is the team's leading scorer (18.9 points a game) and second leading rebounder (7.6 a game). His loss for the rest of the season, including the postseason, deals a serious blow to the Hornets' playoff hopes. They are currently seventh in the playoff standings with a 41-31 record heading into tonight's game at Phoenix. The Memphis Grizzlies (40-32) are in the eighth and final playoff spot with the Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz in pursuit. West said before Friday night's game he just came down"
David West suffers 'left knee trauma' in 121-117 win over Utah Jazz
"The New Orleans Hornets gutted out a 121-117 overtime victory over Utah here Thursday night, but in the process may have lost power forward David West for an extended period of time with a left knee injury. West sustained what is being termed as "left knee trauma" on a driving slam dunk with 22.5 to go in regulation. X-rays were negative, but an MRI is scheduled for today in Phoenix, where the Hornets play the Suns on Friday night. West was laid out on a training table in the dressing room, his knee encased in ice, in obvious pain, his face covered by a towel. A large immobilizing splint and a pair of crutches were brought into the locker room."
Monty Williams anticipating David West may opt out of contract
"New Orleans Hornets forward David West has not indicated yet if he will opt out of his contract to pursue free agency after this season, but Coach Monty Williams is anticipating it could happen. "He's earned the right to choose and I've talked to him about that on a few occasions,'' Williams said. "I've tried to show him how diligently I work and prepare so he'll want to come back here. "For us to be in position to keep him is a good thing, but there are going to be teams that come after him. But the cool thing is he knows what we represent and understands where we're going. He's going to be the flagship leading us there.''"
Williams pushes West, Okafor for All-Star
"The starters for the NBA's All-Star Game will be announced tonight, and if the vote holds true from the first three announced tabulations, Hornets guard Chris Paul should earn his fourth consecutive appearance, third as a starter. However, Hornets Coach Monty Williams was lamenting the fact Wednesday night, as New Orleans prepared to play the Golden State Warriors with a nine-game winning streak on the line, that two other players on his roster were equally deserving. And, that he likely didn't have enough sway to earn them a spot. Forward David West and center Emeka Okafor are putting up statistics worthy of notoriety, but neither will make the team without the support of Western"
West credits defense, not his shooting, for latest victory
"Hero David West wasn't sure how far the fade-away jumper he hoisted Monday night traveled before it found the bottom of the net. Eighteen feet? Nineteen feet? It didn't matter. What mattered was the buzzer-beater that found daylight between the picket-fence arms of 6-foot-10 Serge Ibaka was enough to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 91-89. West talked about how he wanted the ball in his hands for that final shot, with Chris Paul limping after forcing a turnover with nine seconds remaining. It was a great story, one that embroidered the ninth straight victory for the 30-16 Hornets. It was a story of West, who picked up two quick fouls and became a spectator in a scoreless first quarter,"
West, Hornets not close on deal
"The future of the New Orleans Hornets has long been centered on Chris Paul, but much of this season – and beyond – hinges on the contract extension talks the franchise's front office has entered into with forward David West. New Orleans general manager Dell Demps has discussed the framework of a multiyear deal with West's agents at Octagon, but the Hornets' hopes of getting him signed prior to the Feb. 24 trade deadline is "not likely at all," one source close to the talks told Yahoo! Sports. West plans to opt out of the $7.5 million owed him in the final season of a five-year, $45 million contract and expects to command north of $10 million a season on the market, sources said. "It's hard"
West hits late basket as surging Hornets capture their ninth in a row
"Confounded, angry and out of his rhythm since the opening three minutes of the game after picking up two quick personal fouls, Hornets forward David West struggled the rest of the way to find a comfort level -- and his shooting stroke. Fortunately for the Hornets, but not so for the Oklahoma City Thunder, West re-discovered his happy spot -- from 19 feet away at the right elbow over the outstretched arms of 6-foot-10 Serge Ibaka -- with 0.5 seconds remaining to give the home team a stirring 91-89 victory Monday night, their ninth straight, in front of a second consecutive sellout crowd at the New Orleans Arena. West's shot, culminating with his 20th point of the game, came after Chris"
Chris Paul, David West lift surging New Orleans over Oklahoma City
"The scene used to be so sweet. That silky-smooth jumper. That roar from the crowd. That thrill of victory. Four years later, Oklahoma got a taste of how bitter it is being on the other side. This is what it feels like when David West delivers — wearing the wrong uniform and representing the opposing city. West knocked down a game-winning, 19-foot fadeaway with five-tenths of a second remaining Monday night to lift the Hornets to a 91-89 win over the Thunder inside New Orleans Arena. The clutch shot extended the Hornets' league-best winning streak to nine games while evoking memories of how West used to supply such plays in Oklahoma City, where the Hornets temporarily relocated from 2005-07"
David West waiting until season's end to determine contract future
"New Orleans Hornets forward David West, who can opt out of the last year of his contract this summer, reiterated his stance on waiting until season's end to make any decisions on staying or signing an extension. A Yahoo report Monday indicated that General Manager Dell Demps had made an extension offer to West's representatives at Octagon, but West said that an extension offer "has always been out there. But just in terms of making a good business decision, I'm not sure that would be smart "I've been saying the same thing: I'm just going to wait until the end of the year, and I want to make the best decision I can make in terms of my future," West said. "I've had an opportunity to talk"
Hornets' foes are taking notice as West improves his all-around game with emphasis on defense
"A few times in Wednesday night's game against the Hornets, Memphis Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph tried to use a pump fake to help him get his shot over forward David West. But West usually wasn't fooled, and he limited Randolph to 8-of-20 shooting and 17 points in the Hornets' 103-102 overtime victory. As a nine-year veteran, Randolph has had plenty of battles against West, a two-time All-Star. But Wednesday night's game was their first encounter this season, and Randolph said he noticed a marked difference in West's all-around game. "He's a lot better, just a great player,'' Randolph said after the Grizzlies blew a 15-point lead in the third quarter. "He's tough and aggressive.''"
Hornets Coach Monty Williams says they need other players to step up besides David West and Chris Paul
"After losing five of their previous seven games, New Orleans Hornets Coach Monty Williams is pushing for more players to step up besides forward David West and point guard Chris Paul. The Hornets made several mistakes down the stretch in Monday night's 94-93 loss to the Indiana Pacers. It led to Indiana forward Mike Dunleavy's tip-in shot just before time expired after a missed jumper by ex-Grace King standout Danny Granger, who scored 27 points. "We've always felt this roster was built for times like this,'' Williams said after Monday's game. "I'm saying tough stuff; Chris is saying the tough stuff. We need other guys to step up. Emeka Okafor plays great defense, but we don't execute down"
