Cordero Becomes Free Agent
"Through six seasons and 128 saves, Chad Cordero knew only one franchise -- a constancy that made his face, shrouded by his trademark flat-brimmed cap, perhaps the most recognizable on the Washington Nationals. But the next time Cordero throws a pitch, it will be for any team of his choosing. Yesterday, Cordero became a free agent, ending a relationship with the franchise that drafted him in 2003. Major right shoulder surgery in July has cast doubt on Cordero's professional future, and all but forced Washington to cut ties with the 26-year-old's massive contract. The roster move's formality, though, does not negate its significance. Following a season filled with injuries, the Nationals ..."
Cordero Confident He Can Reach His Way Back
"He looked the same; at least part of him did. Same as always, Chad Cordero kept his hat pulled low, brim straight as a Midwest county line. His cheeks puffed from underneath the shadows -- though hey, he said, he's been biking a lot, and he's lost eight pounds since the surgery. He dressed like a teenager, the mellow SoCal look. Jeans sagged low. Rounded skateboard shoes poked out just below. Like that, profile unchanged, Cordero walked down the lower-level steps at Dodger Stadium on Saturday, unlatched the gate to the field and headed toward the visitors' dugout. Cordero hadn't seen most of his Washington Nationals teammates in weeks, since everything about the nature of his job -- and ..."
Nats' Bowden, Cordero Reach Understanding
"By now, the manner in which General Manager Jim Bowden answered a question during a talk radio interview has triggered the full cycle of emotions -- anger, regret and, to an extent, understanding. Bowden said before Friday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers that he regrets breaking news of the decision to non-tender relief pitcher Chad Cordero during the interview Wednesday. At that point, Cordero, just two weeks removed from season-ending labrum surgery, hadn't spoken with Bowden. When he received word via intermediaries, he fumed. "It's like basically being let go of your job over the air," Cordero said Friday, when he arrived at Dodger Stadium to visit teammates. On Friday, Bowden ..."
For Cordero, Non-Tender Talk Hits a Nerve
"Facing an uncertain, prolonged recovery attempt from right shoulder surgery, Chad Cordero at least has a clearer picture of his offseason. It will involve free agency, and just as certain, a significantly reduced salary. The Washington Nationals' intention to non-tender Cordero in the offseason, revealed by General Manager Jim Bowden, didn't alarm Cordero. But the timing of it did. "Right now," Cordero said, "I'm just upset at how it's been handled." Both Cordero and his agent, Larry Reynolds, expressed surprise Thursday about the handling of the announcement, which comes months before the Dec. 12 non-tender deadline and just two weeks after Cordero's surgery. Bowden initially commented ..."
No deal for Cordero?
"Has Chad Cordero thrown his last pitch for the Washington Nationals? It's a possibility, though hardly a certainty, after general manager Jim Bowden revealed the club's intention not to tender the injured closer a contract this winter. That revelation, made by Bowden on AM-980 Wednesday and confirmed Thursday before the Nationals' game against the San Francisco Giants, underscores the uncertainty about Cordero's eventual recovery from major shoulder surgery. The 26-year-old right-hander made six appearances this season and earlier this month had surgery to repair a torn labrum, a procedure that typically requires 12 to 18 months of recuperation. Cordero might not be ready to start 2009 on ..."
Shoulder Tear Ends Season For Cordero
"For Washington Nationals relief pitcher Chad Cordero, a season held back by slow velocity and then slow rehab progress finally derailed. On Monday, an arthrogram revealed a right labrum tear, a shoulder injury more serious than any previous diagnosis and one that will sideline Cordero for the rest of the year. Los Angeles-based orthopedist Lewis Yocum will perform the yet-unscheduled surgery, which requires months of rehab and leads to questions about the injury Cordero originally tried to pitch through."
Cordero plays catch, feels no soreness
"Reliever Chad Cordero took a small step toward returning to the Washington Nationals' bullpen yesterday, playing catch for the first time since tearing a muscle in his side April 29. In Cordero's mind, however, that step was bigger than it seems...Throwing a baseball for the first time since he tore the latissimus dorsi — a triangular flat muscle in the lumbar region — Cordero said he was a little nervous about what might happen. But he felt no pain in his shoulder throwing from 45 to 60 feet."
