Catcher Carlos Santana on 7-day DL with concussion
May 27
Cleveland Plain Dealer
"
In the last three games the AL Central-leading Indians have lost DH Travis Hafner, catcher Carlos Santana and shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to injuries. That's not a good thing. Santana was placed on the seven-day disabled list before Saturday's game against Chicago with a slight concussion. He was hit in the mask by an Alex Rios foul tip Friday in the eighth inning and had to leave the game because of dizziness. The Indians purchased the contract of catcher Luke Carlin from Class AAA Columbus. He joined the club early Saturday. Left-hander Rafael Perez (left lat) was moved to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Carlin on the 40-man roster. Perez is still eligible to come off the

Carlos Santana warned Marlins not to run

"
Indians catcher Carlos Santana told the Miami Marlins he was going to do it. But they didn't listen. The first Marlins base runner got away with his attempted steal. The others did not. Santana gunned down a career-high three attempted base stealers in Friday's 3-2 loss in the first game of the series. Among those caught trying to advance was Santana's buddy Emilio Bonifacio, who entered the game 20-for-20 in steal attempts on the season. "I talked to him before the game," Santana said Saturday. I said, 'Don't run. I'm ready for you.'?" But Bonifacio tested Santana's arm anyway, taking off for second base in the fifth inning. Santana threw him out and also threw out Omar Infante and Bryan

Carlos Santana's RBI single caps two-run rally as Cleveland Indians top Seattle in 11 innings, 6-5
May 18
Cleveland Plain Dealer
"
Jose Lopez watched the flight of the baseball so closely that he missed stepping on first base. Heroic home runs are not born of such things, but never fear -- Lopez knew he'd missed the bag. So did first-base coach Tom Wiedenbauer, who was screaming for him to return. Lopez did, as soon as he saw his game-tying three-run homer barely make it over the 19-foot left-field wall in the eighth inning Thursday at Progressive Field. "So happy," is how Lopez described the moment. He grew happier still when Carlos Santana singled him home with one out in the 11th to give the Indians a 6-5 victory over Seattle. The Indians have won four straight and lead the AL Central by four games over Detroit.

Cleveland Indians sweep Twins on Derek Lowe's 6-hitter and homers by Choo, Cabrera and Santana
May 16
Cleveland Plain Dealer
"
Derek Lowe just walked the leadoff man in the ninth inning Tuesday at Target Field. He was 2-1 on the next batter, Ryan Doumit, when catcher Lou Marson walked to the mound to try and put the brakes on Lowe, who prefers to pitch in fifth gear. "'Hey, doesn't Manny [Acta] know I'm 39, not 19?'" Lowe kiddingly told Marson. Marson, perhaps still chuckling, returned behind the plate and watched Lowe finish a six-hit shutout in the Indians 5-0 victory over the Twins. The victory completed a two-game sweep and gave Lowe his first shutout since Aug. 31, 2005 for the Dodgers against the Cubs.

At the plate, Carlos Santana maintains a patient eye

Carlos Santana has always walked a lot, and he's not going to apologize for it. Santana was tied for second in the American League with 19 walks after Friday's 6-3 victory over Texas. Last year he finished third, with 97 walks. Critics question why Santana can keep batting in the middle of the Indians' lineup when he doesn't hit for a high average. The Indians point to his power and ability to get on base. "I've always walked a lot every year," said Santana, who entered Saturday night's game hitting .259 (21-for-81). "In the minors, one year, I walked 90 times (2007 at Class AA Akron). Last year I took 97 walks. This year I've got 19. "I think it's good. When I go to hit, if I don't like

Carlos Santana taking a beating behind the plate
April 23
Cleveland Plain Dealer
"
If you think Tribe catcher Carlos Santana spends more time rolling around behind the plate after getting hit with foul tips than actually catching pitches, Santana would agree with you. Last week in Seattle, Santana was down on all fours behind the plate after getting hit by a foul tip. Indians manager Manny Acta went out to see how he was doing. "Carlos asked me, 'Do all catchers get hit this much?' " said Acta with a smile. "I told him, 'Carlos, we've got a lot of sinkerballers on this staff.' " Santana had a well-deserved day off Sunday.

Carlos Santana's contract extension with the Tribe is a good deal for both sides
April 11
Cleveland Plain Dealer
"
The year was 2007, and Carlos Santana was learning how to catch as a member of the Class A Great Lakes Loons. In the process, he suddenly seemed to forget how to hit. "No way," said Andy Mota, Santana's long-time agent. "That's what Carlos told me when the Dodgers moved him [from third base] to catcher." Then Mota talked about "the fear that every kid coming out of poverty feels at some point" in their careers as Santana lost his confidence at bat as he was learning a new position. "That's why this is such a big day for Carlos," said Mota. "He can just relax and play." Tuesday Santana signed a five-year, $21 million extension with the Tribe with a club option of $12 million for 2017.

Cleveland Indians, Carlos Santana agree to 5-year $21 million contract extension
April 10
Cleveland Plain Dealer
"
Catcher Carlos Santana has reached a five-year $21 million agreement on a contract extension with the Indians. The team will hold a press conference at 2:30 p.m,. to announce the deal. The deal runs through 2016 with a club option for 2017. The club option covers Santana's first free agent year. In a Tweet, Indians President Mark Shapiro said, "Excited to get a multiyear deal done with Carlos that could keep him here through 2017. He's an exciting middle-of-the-diamond run producer that we can build around." Santana, 26, is entering his second full season in the big leagues. He will not be eligible for free agency until after the 2016 season when he'll be 30.

Santana's two home runs lead Cleveland Indians to 4-3 victory over Toronto
April 9
Akron Beacon Journal
"
Maybe the secret to the Indians' success is to keep each game to no more than nine innings. After losing twice to the Blue Jays – in 16- and 12-inning marathons – the Tribe managed to keep Sunday's game to the regulation nine and won for the first time this season 4-3. All three games have featured strong starting pitching, offense that struggled to put two hits together and relief pitching that unfairly was tagged with a preponderance of the blame.

Carlos Santana's 'rest' from catching could focus on DH duties for Cleveland Indians
February 21
Cleveland Plain Dealer
"
Spring training almost always begins with smiles and hope. Along with that can come a revelation or two. Hector Ambriz provided the smiles Monday when Indians pitchers and catchers reported to open camp. Ambriz missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Manager Manny Acta provided the revelation when he said the signing of first baseman Casey Kotchman could lead to Carlos Santana seeing more time at designated hitter, especially against left-handers. That could mean a drop in playing time for DH Travis Hafner, who will make $13 million in the final year of his contract.

Pain actually gives Carlos Santana a leg up at the plate
September 15
Cleveland Plain Dealer
"
Carlos Santana laughed when the suggestion was made. "If I can hit two home runs and a double every night, I might do it," said Santana. Santana became the seventh Indians player to homer from both sides of the plate in one game in Tuesday's 10-4 loss to the Rangers. He hit homers in the fourth and eighth innings, the first right-handed, the second left-handed. Between homers, he doubled in the sixth. It was during his sixth-inning at-bat that Santana fouled a ball off his left shin. He hit the ground hard and fast and stayed there for several minutes. He eventually stepped back into the batter's box and lined a double to left-center.

Carlos Santana's power show not enough as Texas thumps Masterson and Indians, 10-4

Maybe Carlos Santana should foul a ball off his left shin all the time. It would be painful, but think of the rewards. Santana, putting the final touches on his first full season in the big leagues, became the seventh player in franchise history to homer from both sides of the plate in the Indians' 10-4 loss to AL West-leading Texas on a hot Tuesday night at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. In the fourth inning, when the score was still close, Santana hit his first homer of the night, a 411-foot drive to left center. He did it right-handed against Texas lefty Matt Harrison (12-9, 3.56). Santana next came to the plate in the sixth. He was still batting right-handed, but when he fouled a

Clubhouse confidential: As Carlos Santana neared the plate in the seventh inning Monday after hitting his 20th homer of the season, he pointed to the stands. As he crossed the plate, he pointed to the sky. The first point was for his girlfriend, Brittany, and his agent. The second? "That was to God," said Santana. Among his 20 homers, Santana hit 14 as a catcher and six as a first baseman. The last Indians catcher to hit 14 or more homers in a season was Victor Martinez, who hit 22 in 2007.

Clubhouse confidential: Catcher Carlos Santana saw stars in the ninth inning in Wednesday's 9-2 loss to Seattle. No, he didn't see Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie. Santana saw the kind of stars that are caused by a foul ball hitting him square in the face mask off the bat of Brendan Ryan. Not only did it knock him on his rear end, it knocked him out of the game as Lou Marson finished the inning. "It was the second time I got hit in the mask during the game," said Santana. "I saw stars." Manager Manny Acta removed Santana as a safety precaution. He said Santana's neck was sore. Santana said he was fine and will be in the lineup Friday.

Batting coach Bruce Fields trying to get Carlos Santana right from the left side
August 15
Cleveland Plain Dealer
"
Last season, Carlos Santana hit right-handed pitching well at Class AAA Columbus (48-for-137, .350) and with the Indians (32-for-102, .314). He struggled against lefties, hitting a combined .196 (21-for-107). The script has flipped for the catcher/first baseman this season. In 112 games with the Indians, he is hitting .298 against lefties (37-for-124) and .207 against righties (56-for-270). "In spring training, he made an adjustment to help him hit against lefties," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "He's been more consistent at staying inside the ball as a right-handed batter. As a lefty, he's gotten a bit pull-happy."

Santana has gone backward as a catcher
August 14
Akron Beacon Journal
"
Is Carlos Santana the Indians' catcher of the future? We know he's the catcher of the present, because this season we have seen him behind the plate 61 percent of the time. But will Santana continue to be the team's No. 1 catcher next year or five years from now? We know the grand plan - albeit a little fuzzy around the edges - is for Santana to learn to play first base, which he has done on a semi-regular basis this year. Playing first saves his legs, helps avoid late-season fatigue and sets the stage for the time when he can transition to being a full-time first baseman to keep his bat in the lineup. But the parameters for that kind of move might be in the 10-year range (if Santana still

Asdrubal Cabrera shrugs off dispute with Carlos Santana

Manny Acta asked shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to become more of a team leader after Orlando Cabrera was traded to the Giants on July 30. "It's not hard for me," said Cabrera. "I'm just trying to be the same guy." Acta is looking for a leader to settle a young and untested infield on a contending team. On most nights the Indians start rookie third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall and rookie second baseman Jason Kipnis. Depending on the opponent, catcher Carlos Santana or Matt LaPorta will start at first. Santana, in his first full big-league season, just started playing first base in spring training. LaPorta, who has more experience at first, is in his first full season as well. Cabrera said his

Santana went to Fenway early on Thursday to try get things right. He hit early and made some adjustments. Carlos Santana, Travis Hafner power Indians past Red Sox

In one small but significant way, the season will go down as a grand success for the Indians, no matter how the Central Division race plays out. For the first time in five years, they have won the season series against the Boston Red Sox, and for the first time in 11, they won as many as six games from the denizens of Fenway Park. It wasn't easy. Thursday night's 7-3 victory was crucial, giving the Tribe a 6-4 edge over the Sox. That's the same number of games the Indians won in 2000, when their record was 6-3. In 2006, they won four out of sevenn from the Red Sox. "I've never felt better after splitting a series," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "We pitched our butts off for the whole

Carlos Santana shrugs off anniversary of Fenway injury: Indians Insider

Cleveland Plain Dealer
"
Tuesday was the one-year anniversary of the worst day in Carlos Santana's baseball career. Guess where he celebrated it? Same spot, same ballpark with the same team as an opponent. Santana was back behind the plate at Fenway Park. Back behind the same dish where many in the Indians organization felt his career could have ended when he was knocked head over heels in a collision at the plate on Aug. 2, 2010. You've heard of people in car accidents being knocked out of their shoes. Santana, in full catcher's gear, was knocked out of one of his baseball spikes from the force of Ryan Kalish's slide. Kalish, by the way, has been on the disabled list for most of this year with shoulder and neck

Johan Santana throws 33 pitches in first rehab start, but has long way to go for return to Mets
July 29
New York Daily News
"
The final pitching line was glittering and there were even some glimmers of the old Johan Santana - a pretty changeup for a strikeout in the first inning, a dipping slider for another in the third. But even Santana himself made it clear that three scoreless innings in his first rehab start do not a return make. Santana allowed only two hits and struck out three Thursday night, but he tempered any talk that this was some kind of breakthrough. It is merely part of the process, and even though he hopes to pitch for the Mets this season, he is also preaching caution. "I would love to pitch (in the majors this season), no question about it," Santana said after his outing for the Class A

Carlos Santana is not the hottest hitter on the planet, but he no longer is as cold as Jupiter, either. The Indians' catcher has not gone 0-for-4 since June 26. During that 13-game span, he is batting .261 with four home runs, two doubles, 11 RBI and 10 walks. Even when Santana was in the deepest part of his slump, he was an on-base machine. Going into Friday night against the Baltimore Orioles, he had an on-base percentage of .393 in his past 13 games. "I will continue to say that Carlos is the most productive .230 hitter in the big leagues," Indians manager Manny Acta said Friday. Acta has been one of Santana's biggest boosters, probably for good reason. Though Santana is a long way from

Indians' recent problems begin with Shin-Soo Choo and Carlos Santana

columnist Terry Pluto
"
Most Tribe fans know that Shin-Soo Choo and Carlos Santana are having lousy seasons, and doing it in the middle of the lineup. Choo is batting .240 with five homers and 22 RBI; Santana is at .228 with six homers and 24 RBI. Those have been your No. 3 and No. 4 hitters for much of the season. For much of the season, the Indians were hitting about .320 with runners in scoring position. That rate was not about to continue. But no one expected the colossal collapse of 3-for-42, which the Indians were while losing five of six on this recent homestand. Choo has no RBI in his past 14 games; Santana hasn't driven in a run in eight games. But here are the numbers that hurt the most: Choo is

Carlos Santana bats fourth and Grady Sizemore fifth for Cleveland against the Texas Rangers

Cleveland Plain Dealer
"
Carlos Santana is back in the cleanup spot, and Grady Sizemore apparently will be staying in the middle of the lineup for a while. After taking Santana out of the No. 4 hole on the Indians' just-completed six-game trip, manager Manny Acta returned his young catcher to the cleanup spot before Thursday's game against Texas. "He's swinging the bat better," said Acta. "What's the difference between hitting fourth and fifth? That you can call the fourth spot cleanup and you can't call the fifth spot cleanup?" Santana hit in the fifth spot four times, seventh once and sixth once on the trip against the Rays and Blue Jays. He batted .412 (7-for-17) with four runs and four RBI. During the trip,

Santana cuts out toe tap, ends slump

Carlos Santana got some advice from manager Manny Acta and hitting coach Jon Nunnally on Tuesday, and it paid off immediately. ''Yesterday we sat him down and told him he needs to cut out the toe tap he does at the plate,'' Acta said. ''It's a way to cut down on his body movement.'' Why limit Santana's body movement? ''The other way isn't working,'' Acta said, referring to Santana's lengthy slump. ''We felt like a lot of his problems were because of the extra body movement.'' Tuesday wasn't the first time that Acta and Nunnally spoke to Santana about making a change. ''We mentioned it before yesterday,'' Acta said. Loss of Hafner, struggling Santana creates big hole
May 29

It would be one thing if Carlos Santana were hitting as well as Indians manager Manny Acta expected. But with Santana still struggling at the plate, Travis Hafner's absence because of a strained oblique has created a major hole in the lineup. ''Hafner is an intimidating figure in the lineup, even when he's not hitting,'' Acta said Saturday. ''He and Santana also draw walks, so that we're not giving up extra outs.'' Santana's skid had made him a liability in the cleanup spot. Hafner would be the logical hitter to move up one notch from fifth. Instead, Acta must come up with other alternatives. ''You just have to adjust,'' Acta said. ''Teams have injuries. The Twins have had to play without

Big changes to lineup as Grady Sizemore bats sixth, Carlos Santana seventh

Indians manager Manny Acta did the biggest makeover of the season to his lineup Friday. Players were sent spinning into spots they haven't seen through the first 47 games of the season. After taking such dramatic action, Acta wouldn't say how long the changes would last. "We've living for today," Acta said. Grady Sizemore (right knee) was activated before the game. He batted sixth and was Acta's designated hitter, but went 0-for-4 in the Tribe's 5-0 loss. It was the first time Sizemore, who has spent most of his career hitting leadoff, has hit sixth since May 7, 2005, against Texas. Slumping Carlos Santana not in Indians' lineup today

Indians catcher Carlos Santana, in an 0-for-19 slide, is not in the lineup today against the Red Sox. Tribe righty Mitch Talbot, just activated from the disabled list, faces Boston lefty Jon Lester at Progressive Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05. Talbot's previous major-league appearance was April 11, when he gave up five hits in eight innings of a 4-0 victory on the road against the Angels. Talbot suffered an elbow strain in that game. Cleanup hitter Santana is hitting .203 with six homers and 21 RBI in 43 games. His 32 walks have been a big boost to the on-base percentage.

Carlos Santana, the hardest working man in show business, is making his third start of the season at first base Sunday for the Indians. Lou Marson, meanwhile, is making just his fifth start as Santana's backup at catcher. This is the Indians 21st game. Santana has started 20 of them -- 16 at catcher, three at first and one at DH. Manny Acta likes Santana's bat in the lineup, slumping though he maybe, and it sounds like he has no plans of changing that. "Cal Ripken played over 2,000 straight games. Miguel Tejada played over 1,000 games in a row," said Acta, when asked if he was planning to rest Santana. "We've already had a couple of days off. We've played only 20 games. He'll get his days

He did not look like the incarnation of Eddie Murray or Keith Hernandez, but for a catcher who used to play third base, Santana looked relatively at ease. ''I thought he looked comfortable,'' Indians manager Many Acta said. ''He made all the plays and tried to turn a double play, which is one of the toughest plays on the field to make.'' With a runner on first in the fifth inning, Santana scooped up a bouncer and threw to second for the

Carlos Santana gave Indians fans a glimpse of the future on Wednesday in a Cactus League game at Goodyear Ballpark. No, he wasn't crouched behind the plate coaxing one great pitch after another from the pitching staff. He wasn't huddled on the mound with manager Manny Acta and starter Carlos Carrasco discussing strategy. Nor was he throwing out a fleet member of the San Diego Padres at second base. Santana, the Indians catcher of today and tomorrow, was playing first base. "That's my first game ever there in my career," said Santana. He did better than the Indians, who lost, 9-2, to the Padres. Santana played six innings, handled nine chances flawlessly, doubled and scored the Indians'

On Thursday, Carlos Santana slid for the first time since undergoing surgery on his left knee in August. "That completed his rehab," said manager Manny Acta. Next thing on Santana's spring-training checklist is learning how to play first base. Eduardo Perez and Mike Hargrove, former first basemen and recently hired by the Indians, will help him in the weeks to come. Don't get excited. Santana is still the Indians' starting catcher, but they want to find ways to keep his bat in the lineup, while giving his legs a break. There are two ways to do that: Play Santana at first base and DH. The Indians did the same thing with Victor Martinez before he was traded to Boston. Santana says he will

It's a funny thing about knee injuries. They're never what they appear to be. Grady Sizemore injured his left knee sliding into a base over 10 months ago. It didn't seem serious. Just a bruised knee, but he still can't run the bases or play center field as the Indians open spring training Thursday with their first official workout for pitchers and catchers. Then there's catcher Carlos Santana. On Aug. 2, at Fenway Park, Ryan Kalish slid into Santana's left knee at the plate. Santana was waiting on a throw from right fielder Shin-Soo Choo as Kalish tried to score from second on a single. Catching is a difficult job. Taking a throw from right field with a runner trying to score from second

According to an update by the Indians, touted catcher Carlos Santana continues to progress according to schedule after undergoing surgery to repair the lateral collateral ligament in his left knee Aug. 6. Dr. Rick Parker, who performed the operation, examined Santana at the Tribe's spring training headquarters in Goodyear, Ariz., this week and cleared him to begin full batting practice activities in addition to catching bullpens.

The Indians' long cold winter showed its first sign of thaw Tuesday when the team announced catcher Carlos Santana was cleared to start spring training on time in Goodyear, Ariz. Pitchers and catchers report to spring training Tuesday and begin workouts Thursday. Dr. Rick Parker from the Cleveland Clinic examined Santana's left knee Monday and OK'd him for baseball activities. "Carlos should be on a normal spring training progression," said GM Chris Antonetti. Santana is expected to be available for the Cactus League opener Feb. 27 against Cincinnati and the regular season opener April 1 against Chicago at Progressive Field. On Aug. 6, Dr. Parker performed surgery on Santana's left knee to

Indians catcher Carlos Santana's return from knee surgery got a boost Monday when his surgeon cleared the young star to begin full batting drills, from both sides of the plate. The Indians, in a release sent out today, said Dr. Rick Parker also cleared Santana "to begin position-specific agility drills in addition to full baserunning exercises next week." The goal is to have Santana playing in games during the first week of exhibition season, which starts on Feb. 27.

Six months removed from knee surgery, Carlos Santana cleared for Spring Training

Having Carlos Santana in the Opening Day lineup is becoming less of a hope and more of a reality for the Indians. Santana -- now six months removed from surgery on his left knee -- has been cleared to begin Spring Training with no restrictions. That is great news for Cleveland, which holds its first official workout for its pitchers and catchers on Feb. 17. The club's first full-squad workout is scheduled for Feb. 20. On Monday, Dr. Rick Parker made a special trip from Cleveland to the Tribe's spring site in Goodyear, Ariz., to personally evaluate Santana's progress. Parker, who repaired a damaged lateral collateral ligament in the catcher's left knee on Aug. 6, gave Santana the go-ahead

While Indians center fielder Grady Sizemore and catcher Carlos Santana are both on schedule to be in the Tribe lineup on Opening Day, there are milestones in their respective recoveries from knee surgery that must be met this winter and there will be questions about their physical form throughout the 2011 season. Both Sizemore and Santana are currently rehabbing at the Indians' complex in Goodyear, Ariz., and said to be progressing well. Sizemore is five and a half months removed from microfracture surgery on his left knee, while Santana is three and a half months removed from surgery to repair the lateral collateral ligament in his left knee. Carlos Santana's recovery from knee surgery appears to be on schedule, which means he will be ready for spring training. ''I'm staying in Cleveland for another month, then I will go to Arizona,'' he said Wednesday, outlining where his workout schedule will continue. ''My knee feels good, very strong.'' Santana doesn't know when he will be permitted to start baseball activity, but he said he will start a running program in November. ''Now, I watch my team play every day on television,'' he said.

Carlos Santana was walking with the aid of crutches and had a brace on his left knee, as he moved around the Indians' clubhouse Wednesday. After undergoing surgery, he won't be playing baseball until next spring, but the rookie catcher already is working in the weight room to maintain strength in the leg. ''I'm OK mentally,'' he said through his translator, coaching assistant Ruben Niebla, himself recovering from knee surgery. ''I realized that it's part of the game.'' Santana sustained the injury during a collision at home plate Aug. 2 against the Boston Red Sox. ''I definitely saw the replay,'' he said. ''I got hit pretty hard, but I felt good about holding onto the ball.'' The injury

Acta says surgery on Santana's knee yields no surprises

Indians manager Manny Acta said surgery on the left knee of catcher Carlos Santana went well Friday and there was nothing surprising found when doctors at the Cleveland Clinic operated. ''For us it was good news because they didn't find any damage inside the knee or anywhere else,'' Acta said. ''They were able to just repair the ligament. They didn't have to reconstruct anything in there. ''Everything looked great and we're still looking at four-to-six months [rehab] and he should be ready to go at spring training.'' Santana, the Indians No. 1 prospect according to Baseball America entering the season, batted .260 with the Tribe in 46 games after making his major-league debut June 11. He

Now, the question becomes whether Carlos Santana will be ready to play when spring training starts. Dr. Rick Parker is scheduled to perform surgery that stabilizes the lateral collateral ligament in the left knee of the Indians' rookie catcher this morning at the Cleveland Clinic. ''Carlos is expected to make a full recovery by the beginning of the 2011 championship season,'' head trainer Lonnie Soloff said Thursday. But Santana probably won't start the season on time unless he can participate in full baseball activities for most of spring training. ''Recovery typically is four to six months,'' Soloff said. ''So that puts us right up against spring training.'' In other words, nobody knows

Santana's ligament sprained

An MRI scan gave doctors enough information to establish what precisely is wrong with Carlos Santana's knee, but the choice of treatment remains to be determined. ''Carlos has a sprain of the lateral collateral ligament of the left knee, on the outside of the knee joint,'' said Indians head trainer Lonnie Soloff by phone on Tuesday. ''We are still gathering information to decide how we will handle the situation. ''He will be out for 15 days, the [minimum) length of the disabled list stint. But certainly it can be longer than that.'' Common sense indicates that Santana will not be doing any catching for at least the rest of the month after a collision at the plate with Ryan Kalish in the

Rookie catcher Carlos Santana is on the disabled list and might need surgery on his left knee after a collision at the plate in the seventh inning Monday night. Surgery would almost certainly end Santana's season and delay the rebuilding of the Indians. Still, team officials consider themselves fortunate. Head trainer Lonnie Soloff said the injury could have been worse. "I think all of us feared the worst just watching it in real time or on replay," said Soloff. "You fear for potential fractures, ligament injuries, the knee joint and cartilage issues. "At this point, we did not unearth any of that. We do feel fortunate." Santana and Travis Hafner returned to Cleveland for exams and MRI
