Cam Ward News & Rumors

Canes, Ward blank the St. Louis Blues 2-0
"The Carolina Hurricanes don't mind facing off against the NHL's best, and they have held their own this season. They swept the Boston Bruins, the defending Stanley Cup champions. They beat the Vancouver Canucks, who played the Bruins for the Cup last year, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. They shut out the Chicago Blackhawks. On Thursday night, the Canes went head-to-head with the St. Louis Blues and came away with a 2-0 victory as goaltender Cam Ward won his 200th career game and notched his 20th career shutout."
Ward, Canes stop Jets 2-1
"The Carolina Hurricanes will scatter in many directions Tuesday, taking time off for the NHL All-Star Game break. Truth be known, many of the Canes probably would like to keep on playing. The Hurricanes, in their final game before the break, topped the Winnipeg Jets 2-1 Monday at the RBC Center. Goaltender Cam Ward again was standing-tall solid in net, Jeff Skinner and Tim Brent scored goals and the defense was gritty enough when it needed to be."
Canes' Ward has refocused his emotions on his game
"It's not a moment Cam Ward likes to recall and one the Carolina Hurricanes goalie insists he will not repeat. During the Canes' Dec. 9 road game against the Winnipeg Jets, Ward was pulled by coach Kirk Muller early in the second period and then had an emotional meltdown on the bench, letting out a few expletives. Two days later, Ward said he was sorry for the outburst and said he would put all his energies, physically and emotionally, into his goaltending. Tonight, Ward and the Canes face the Jets at the RBC Center. Since that night in Winnipeg, Ward has gone 8-4-5 and has allowed more than three goals just twice in those 17 games."
Canes' Ward vows to keep calm, carry on
"Carolina Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller put his team through a rigorous practice Sunday at the Air Canada Centre. "Be focused, be sharp," Muller shouted. "Fight through it, fight through it." The day before, Muller said many of the same things to goaltender Cam Ward, except in a much calmer tone. It was a coach-and-player talk that both probably needed after Ward's outburst Friday night in Winnipeg. Pulled from the game in the second period after the Jets had taken a 4-0 lead, Ward was visibly upset on the bench, frustrated, the emotions of a tough season spilling out of him. "I think it built up over a period of time," Ward said Sunday. "I pretty much yelled a bad word as loud as I could a"
Ward stops 33 shots in Canes' win over Bruins
"The Carolina Hurricanes now have beaten the Stanley Cup champions twice in less than a week. The Canes, mixing hard work with some fisticuffs, topped the Boston Bruins 4-1 at TD Garden. Anthony Stewart and Joni Pitkanen each have two goals for the Canes this season, and all four have come against the Bruins as Carolina leads 2-0 after two. Eric Staal and Tuomo Ruutu each had 5-on-3 power-play goals in the third period as the Bruins came unhinged. Stewart's goal at 2:47 of the first period gave the Canes a 1-0 lead after the first period. Stewart knocked in the rebound of a Brett Sutter shot after sustained pressure in the Bruins' zone by the Canes' fourth line."
Canes' Ward itching for start
"Cam Ward admits he was getting a little antsy. The Carolina Hurricanes' goalie was all set for the beginning of preseason training camp, having worked hard this summer on his conditioning, only to be held back a few days by an injury referred to as "upper-body stiffness." But Ward will be the starter in net tonight as the Hurricanes face the Nashville Predators at the RBC Center in their second preseason exhibition game. Canes coach Paul Maurice said Ward could split time with Justin Peters. "It's going to be nice to get into the swing of things, get that game experience," Ward said Thursday. "It's probably going to be a little bit different, having not played in a game in a long time."
Canes' Ward misses first practice
"Well before N.C. State's football tailgaters set up tents and started grilling burgers Saturday outside the RBC Center, the Carolina Hurricanes were putting in some hard hockey work inside it. The Canes held their first practices of preseason training camp, taking the ice promptly at 8:30 a.m. Forward Chad LaRose was first out, the skating was generally nonstop and everyone was left a little pooped when the day was done. "We were up and down the ice pretty good," Canes captain Eric Staal said. "It was a good pace.""
Canes nominate Ward
"The Carolina Hurricanes announced Wednesday that goaltender Cam Ward has been selected by his teammates as Carolina's nominee for the 2010-11 King Clancy Memorial Trophy. It's the second time that Ward has been nominated for this honor, annually awarded to the NHL player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy contribution in his community. On the ice, Ward has a record of 35-25-10 this season, with a 2.59 goals-against average and .922 save percentage. He has established a franchise record for saves, stopping 2,102 shots to lead all NHL goalies. Ward, 27, also ranks tied for first among goalies in games played (71), tied for fifth in wins"
Ward up to the challenge
"Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford doesn't hedge any in assessing the play of goaltender Cam Ward this season. "He has singlehandedly won us games and singlehandedly kept us in many games," Rutherford said. "He's our MVP for the year." That comes from a former NHL goalie, from a man who has an appreciation of the position and its demands. And the fact the Hurricanes (34-29-10) go into tonight's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning three points out of playoff position is a testament to Ward's savvy and effectiveness, Rutherford said."
Canes, Ward ready for a playoff push
"Cam Ward's streak of consecutive starts in goal for the Carolina Hurricanes ended at 24 games Friday, when he was given a break. But that's it, coach Paul Maurice said Sunday. The Hurricanes have 16 games remaining in the regular season, and Ward should start them all, meaning he would play in 40 of the past 41. "He should be well-rested and fresh," Maurice said. "We have enough blocks of time off between our blocks of games. We ran him 22, 23, 24 in a row ... so this should be easy for him. "Unless something comes up where he's not right or not feeling right ... I would expect him to be ready to go." Ward had 41 saves and was the winner Thursday in the Canes' 3-2 overtime victory over the"
Ward, Miller face off
"Tim Gleason of the Carolina Hurricanes has played in front of goaltender Cam Ward for five seasons, doing the dirty, gritty work of a defenseman. A year ago, he played with Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller for Team USA - and was his roommate - during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Gleason calls both friends and says the two are much alike in their play and in their temperament. "They're very competitive," Gleason said Wednesday. "And they're great in big games, both of them." Tonight's game qualifies as a big one. The Hurricanes (30-25-9) are eighth in the NHL's Eastern Conference with 69 points. The Sabres (30-25-7) are ninth, two points behind, with two games in hand and victories"
Ward loses lead but still has fun
"Cam Ward joked during pregame NHL All-Star interviews that his goal, as the starting goalie for Team Staal, was to keep Team Lidstrom under five during the first period. The Carolina Hurricanes star succeeded, but only by a whisker in the RBC Center on Sunday. With an early 4-0 lead, Ward gave up four goals fast in a period that ended 4-4 en route to an 11-10 victory for Nicklas Lidstrom's team. "Those guys are All-Stars," Ward said. "They're going to score." In an unusual twist, Ward served as a first-period on-ice commentator of sorts for the Versus television network. Approached Sunday and asked to wear a live microphone during the opening 20 minutes, Ward agreed in the spirit of being"
Ward keeps control
"Cam Ward is accustomed to hearing cheers at the RBC Center, and the guy the Carolina Hurricanes call "Wardo" will hear a lot more today. The goaltender, for the first time, will be playing in an NHL All-Star Game and will do it in front of a host of home fans. "It gives me goosebumps just thinking about the atmosphere," said Ward, who will play for Team Staal in tonight's game and was the first pick in Friday night's NHL Fantasy Draft. All-Star games were expected to be commonplace for Ward. That happens when you're 22 and your team wins a Stanley Cup and you wrap your arms around the Conn Smythe Trophy. Ward was a rookie in 2006 when the Hurricanes won the Cup, outlasting the Edmonton"
Eric Staal selects all Canes All-Stars as teammates in draft
"ric Staal got Cam Ward. Staal got Jeff Skinner, and his brother, Marc Staal. All in all, it seemed like a big night for Team Staal as the first NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft was held at the Raleigh Convention Center and the two teams were selected for Sunday's All-Star Game at the RBC Center. "I like our team a lot," Staal said after the draft. "I think we got the guys we wanted. "I enjoyed it. It was pretty cool. I didn't know what to expect. It was easier making the picks than for the guys sitting there waiting but everyone was in good spirits." Or so it seemed. Staal's counterpart, Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings, put together a team that includes Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay"
Cam Ward makes 39 saves in fight-filled, 4-1 New York Rangers defeat to Carolina Hurricanes
"With seven forwards injured, the Rangers cannot expect to score seven goals a night, as they did on Wednesday in a shutout victory over Toronto. But they do still have Marian Gaborik, who snapped out of his slump with a four-goal effort in that game at the Garden. At least the Rangers thought Gaborik's big night was the beginning of big things to come. Instead, his follow-up Thursday night included no shots on goal until the third period, and his turnover led to Brandon Sutter's goal as the Carolina Hurricanes sent the Rangers to a 4-1 defeat. By the time Gaborik finally managed a shot, with 8:44 left, the Rangers already were down 3-0. Brandon Prust scored his sixth of the season to"
Ward, Staal worthy picks
"To no one's surprise, the Carolina Hurricanes will have three players involved in the NHL All-Star weekend they are hosting, the two obvious All-Stars and a third obvious rookie selection to participate in the skills competition. Eric Staal was a gimme from the word go, a three-time All-Star already who also happens to be playing some of the best all-around hockey of his career. Cam Ward's statistics weren't of All-Star caliber a month ago, but they are now. He was penciled in right behind Staal, and just had to avoid tripping over his own laces. Jeff Skinner's inclusion among the 12 rookies invited to come along for the ride was a no-brainer given his play this season and Calder Trophy"
Staal, Ward chosen for All-Star game
"It seemed to be a foregone conclusion Eric Staal would be selected for the 2011 NHL All-Star Game, and the Carolina Hurricanes captain was Tuesday. Anyone who has been watching this season had to figure the Canes' Jeff Skinner would be one of the 12 rookies picked for the NHL Honda SuperSkills competition during the All-Star Weekend, and he was. Then there was Cam Ward. Everyone associated with the Hurricanes believed their star goaltender deserved to play in the Jan. 30 All-Star Game at the RBC Center. His numbers were up to snuff and it was his home arena. At the same time there was stiff competition at the position, and Ward's selection for his first All-Star Game appearance wasn't"
Staal, Ward named to All-Star Game
"Carolina Hurricanes center Eric Staal and goalie Cam Ward were two of 36 players named Tuesday by the NHL for the All-Star Game, which will be at Raleigh's RBC Center Jan. 30. Staal, 26, is tied for eighth place in the league in goals (20) and is tied for 14th in the league in scoring (41 points). He leads the Hurricanes in goals, points and in power play goals (7). This is will be Staal's fourth-straight All-Star game, a franchise record. He was named MVP at the 2008 All-Star Game. "It's an honor every time," Staal said Tuesday after the morning skate at the RBC Center. "You want to be recognized among the elite of the league. For me to be a part of that this year is an incredible honor"
Ward still hopeful for All-Star appearance
"Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward has kept an eye on the fan balloting for the 2011 NHL All-Star game at the RBC Center. The biggest surprise, Ward said, is not that he's eighth in votes so far among the goalies, Ward said. "I see Chad LaRose is doing really well," he said Friday, smiling. LaRose, a write-in candidate at forward, has 3,000 more votes than Canes captain Eric Staal. Online voting for the Jan. 30 game ends Monday. Adding a comic touch to the unexpected voting totals is the All-Star Game commercial shot by Staal and LaRose a few months ago. Staal lifts a sign that says "Rosey is Rad! Vote for Chad," expecting LaRose to then put in a nice plug for him. Instead, a grinning"
Infection only a bump in the road for Hurricanes' Ward
"Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward made one request before he faced the media Wednesday afternoon. "No cameras, please." Ward was a trifle embarrassed because he was sporting a bandage across his forehead. This can be regarded as a badge of honour in hockey but, in Ward's case, it was the result of treatment for an infection that relegated him to the backup role in Monday's 5-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ward said the infection, which caused swelling above his left eye, didn't bother him in practice and he expects to start his 300th career regular-season NHL game Thursday night when the Canadiens visit the Hurricanes at the RBC Centre. "I have no idea how it happened," Ward"
Canes hope Ward returns
"The Carolina Hurricanes are hoping goaltender Cam Ward, whose string of starts ended Monday because of an infection, will be able to play Thursday against the Montreal Canadiens. Ward missed Monday's road game against the Tampa Bay Lightning because of the infection above an eye. Although Ward did dress for the game, Justin Peters started in net as the Lightning won 5-1 to end the Canes' four-game winning streak. General manager Jim Rutherford said Ward was scheduled to see a dermatologist Tuesday, adding, "We think Cam will be fine in the next day or two." Ward had started 10 straight games before Monday, notching 45 saves in the Canes' 3-2 shootout win Thursday in Atlanta and then"
Thrashers suffer second straight shootout loss
"For a second consecutive night, the Thrashers and shootouts didn't mix. At home after a three-game road trip, the Thrashers lost 3-2 in a shootout to the Carolina Hurricanes. The loss came 24 hours after a shootout loss at Tampa Bay. After winning 10 of their previous 12 games, the Thrashers have lost two in a row. The game, played before an announced crowd of 11,043 at Philips Arena, was squandered well in advance of the shootout, which the Thrashers lost two goals to one. They led 2-0 going into the third period and spent much of it in retreat, allowing Carolina to tie the game within the first six minutes of the period and failing to restore momentum after that. "I don't know if it was"
Ward shuts out the Bruins in Boston
"Two days after the birth of his son, Carolina Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward gave Nolan a game to remember. Ward made 37 saves for his 13th career shutout and the Canes scored three power-play goals in beating the Boston Bruins 3-0 at TD Garden. The Bruins lead the NHL in penalty killing but the Canes had a power-play goal in each period to win their first regular-season game in Boston since February 2008. Rookie Jeff Skinner scored a power-play goal with 15.8 seconds to play in the first, and Tuomo Ruutu tipped in an Ian White shot at 11:09 of the second. Jussi Jokinen has scored at 7:52 of the third. Ruutu, playing his 400th career game, also assisted on Skinner's goal and has points in his"
Hurricanes beat Rangers at Garden on Cole goal wristed past Henrik Lundqvist
"The Rangers' work ethic was strong, their power play clicked for a pair of goals and Henrik Lund.qvist was on his game. But at the Garden, none of that seems to matter these days. Cam Ward made 40 saves, including 14 in an action-packed third period, and Erik Cole scored a power-play goal with 3:59 left to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-3 win Friday night, sending the Rangers to 1-3-1 on Broadway. "I don't even want to talk about it, because I think we talk ourselves into it," said John Tortorella, whose team tied for the second-fewest home wins in the NHL last season. "We've just got to keep on fighting here, and you can't break apart. It's still early, but we have to keep on trying"
Canes goalies add interesting twists to their workouts
"Proving they're adaptable to change, and immune to any playful razzing from teammates, Carolina Hurricanes goaltenders Cam Ward and Justin Peters have added interesting twists to their off-ice exercise routines. Ward has turned to Pilates. Peters is into yoga. Hot yoga, that is. Very, very hot yoga. Goaltenders can be a little different and at times very stubborn about all their routines. But Ward and Peters, who both come off as sensible - read "normal" - types, insist they have found benefits in adding something new to previous all-too-predictable offseason workouts. "I think it's always good to try new things and have an open mindset and a good attitude about it, because it is easy to"
Canes give Ward help after slow start
"Cam Ward kept the Carolina Hurricanes in the game through an abysmal opening period. That gave Brandon Sutter and Eric Staal a chance to put a dent in the Montreal Canadiens' drive for a playoff spot while keeping the Hurricanes' slim hopes alive. Staal scored 2:55 into the third period and Ward made 34 saves to lead Carolina to a 2-1 victory over the Canadiens on Wednesday night. Staal broke a tie with his 24th goal, beating Carey Price from the right edge of the crease. Sutter drew the Hurricanes even at 1 when he got credit for his 20th goal early in the second. Ward stopped 11 shots in the first, 13 in the second and 10 in the third to win his second straight start after missing 17"
Ward returns to new-look defense
"When Cam Ward last started a game in goal for the Carolina Hurricanes, he had some older, familiar faces working in front of him. The defensemen were Tim Gleason and Joe Corvo, Aaron Ward and Andrew Alberts, Joni Pitkanen and Brett Carson. That was the group Feb. 3 in Calgary when Ward first experienced the severe back pain that has sidelined him the past seven weeks. Ward is scheduled to return tonight and start in Atlanta against the Thrashers, and he'll find the group of D-men has a different look and a younger makeup. Gleason has a broken foot and may not play again this season. Gone are Corvo, Ward and Alberts, all traded March 3. Pitkanen and Carson remain, but Brian Pothier, Jamie"
Ward will be back in goal Monday
"Cam Ward will be back in net a little sooner than expected for the Carolina Hurricanes. While Manny Legace will be the starting goaltender today against the Atlanta Thrashers, Ward will make his first start since Feb. 3 when the Canes and Thrashers go at it again Monday in Atlanta. Canes coach Paul Maurice had said that Ward, who has been sidelined with a back injury, might return during the team's two-game trip to Montreal and Ottawa later next week. But Maurice said Friday that rookie goaltender Justin Peters was being reassigned to Albany of the AHL and that Ward would be activated."
Peters back to Albany; Ward ready
"Cam Ward's return will come sooner rather than later. Canes coach Paul Maurice said today that Ward would start in goal Monday in Atlanta against the Thrashers. Justin Peters has been reassigned to Albany (AHL). Maurice had said Ward's first start since Feb. 3 would come in the middle of next week. But Ward has tested out his back, feels good and will be Manny Legace's backup Saturday against the Thrashers at the RBC Center."
Canes' Ward could start in net next week; Ruutu lost for final nine games of season
"Cam Ward was back on the ice Wednesday for practice with the Carolina Hurricanes, moving well, taking shots, absorbing some good-natured woofing from his teammates. The team's star goaltender, sidelined since Feb. 3 with a back injury, could start a game next week - an important step for Ward and for the organization in moving forward. But although Ward will return, forward Tuomo Ruutu will be lost for the final nine games of the regular season. Coach Paul Maurice said Ruutu, perhaps the team's most bruising forward, would undergo shoulder surgery today and would require extensive rehabilitation. Ruutu had played much of the season with an injured right shoulder that knocked him out of"
Canes' Ward could be back in net this season
"There's a chance Cam Ward could be back in goal for the Carolina Hurricanes this season. General manager Jim Rutherford said Tuesday that Ward, sidelined since Feb. 3 with a back injury, had his second appointment with a back specialist in Charlotte this week. Rutherford said surgery will not be required. "We're real encouraged with the progress he's making," Rutherford said. "He has been feeling much better in the last week. We'll see where he is in the next week or two. "When this first happened, we felt he may not play again this year. Based on how he feels now, the progress he's made, he could play in a few weeks. But we will not push it by any means." Ward, 25, was bothered by back"
Ward's injury ominous for Canes
"An already nightmarish season for Cam Ward has taken another bad turn for the Carolina Hurricanes goaltender. General manager Jim Rutherford said Saturday that Ward would consult with a back specialist early next week to determine the severity and nature of the back problem Ward apparently first suffered Wednesday against the Calgary Flames. Ward flew with the Canes to Buffalo on Thursday, experiencing tightness in his back, and then returned Friday to Raleigh. Rutherford said he did not know the seriousness of the back problem or if Ward might need surgery. "Until we learn something from the doctor, we don't have any other update," Rutherford said. "But we are very concerned about this"
By beating Boston, Ward becomes franchise leader in wins
"All Brandon Sutter could do was smile, shake his head and say, "Wow." Sutter was on the bench after scoring a goal, admiring a replay of a nifty move by Ray Whitney that set him up for the score, but he could just as well have been talking about the Carolina Hurricanes' play Sunday against the Boston Bruins. The Canes won 5-1, leading 4-0 after two periods, and beating the slumping Bruins in every facet of the game. That made Cam Ward the franchise leader in career victories with 131, passing Arturs Irbe, the star of the Canes' 2002 run to the Stanley Cup finals. In a season with a number of lows, there were any number of things to like about the Canes this day at the RBC Center. Jussi"
Ward finds comfort zone
"Carolina Hurricanes winger Ray Whitney skated off the RecZone ice Saturday, plopped down in the locker room and soon found himself talking about the play of goaltender Cam Ward. "He's there," Whitney said. Meaning? "He's reading the puck so well," Whitney said. "He seems to be moving pretty fluid. He's anticipating plays, looking very comfortable. "And you can see it in games now. He's square, in the right spot, with no unnecessary movements. He just looks really relaxed." Ward looked that way Friday against the Colorado Avalanche. He had 29 saves in the Hurricanes' 2-1 win at the RBC Center, denied a shutout in the final seconds but very sound throughout. Yes, the Canes' penalty killers"

Legace to back up Ward in Canes' net
"The Carolina Hurricanes made an interesting roster decision Monday and later an eyebrow-raising lineup change for their game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. After placing goaltender Michael Leighton on waivers, the Canes made captain Rod Brind'Amour a healthy scratch for the game against the Stanley Cup champions. With goaltender Cam Ward due to return from injury this week, likely Wednesday against the New Jersey Devils, the Canes had the decision of carrying either Leighton or Manny Legace as the backup goalie. Legace, who started against the Penguins, was the winner on Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks and has earned the confidence of management and the coaching staff. NHL teams"
Canes' Ward back on ice
"Carolina Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward faced practice shots from his teammates Thursday for the first time since the freak injury that sidelined him on Nov. 7. Before even seeing a puck, Ward spent the two previous days working solely with Canes assistant coach Tom Barrasso. "Yesterday was the first time I saw a puck [in drills with Barrasso]," he said. "Today we made progress, and I feel pretty good out there." Ward's knee was cut by a skate while facing the Columbus Blue Jackets, the first of two similar accidental injuries that afflicted the Hurricanes this season. More recently, in Monday night's 3-2 loss to the Washington Capitals, the Hurricanes lost defenseman Joe Corvo for an"
Canes lose Ward for 3 to 4 weeks
"Cam Ward and Eric Staal have been called the cornerstones of the Carolina Hurricanes franchise by general manager Jim Rutherford. But the Hurricanes, caught up in a nightmarish season and winless in their past 12 games, now will be without both stars after Ward suffered a laceration of the upper left leg Saturday in a 3-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Ward will be sidelined a minimum of three to four weeks, Rutherford said Sunday, forcing the team to make a goaltending decision. Staal has missed the past three games with an upper-body injury and should be sidelined another couple of weeks, Rutherford said. "From the information I've been given, it's expected to be about a month,""
Ward to stay in hospital; Out indefinitely
"Canes general manager Jim Rutherford said today that goaltender Cam Ward would remain at a Columbus, Ohio, hospital another day and that the team may look to trade or sign another goaltender. Ward suffered a laceration of the left leg in the first period of the Canes' 3-2 loss at Columbus on Saturday and was taken to Riverside Hospital. "We'll have to see how it goes," Rutherford said today of Ward's injury and recovery time. "It appears it will be a fairly long period of time." Rutherford said the Hurricanes are looking at different options: a trade, signing an available goaltender or calling up Justin Peters from Albany (AHL). "We're talking over the options. We don't have an answer"
Ward, Staal aim for Olympics
"Eric Staal and Cam Ward of the Carolina Hurricanes are accustomed to playing and performing before packed arenas and thousands of people. But Staal and Ward also must be aware that there are a few more eyes watching their every move this season -- those on the selection committee that will choose Canada's Olympic team for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games. Despite the Canes' 4-3 shootout loss against the New York Islanders on Wednesday, Ward has been sharp in goal in nearly all of Carolina's first eight games. Staal has been bothered by a groin injury but is healthy and had a goal and assist -- his first multi-point game -- against the Isles. "I don't really feel those eyes," Ward said"
Ward ready to carry load
"There's nothing in Paul Maurice's coaching résumé to indicate he's ever hesitant to play his No. 1 goalie, which is good news for Cam Ward, who would just as soon play as not. So as he prepared for the season that begins tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers, the Carolina Hurricanes' coach sat down with his calendar and looked for places in the schedule where he might give Ward a rest and find Michael Leighton some action. It's the kind of plan that looks great on paper before the puck is dropped but often goes out the window as soon as circumstances intervene - and in Maurice's past, circumstances have intervened quite often. "I will admit," Maurice said, "that I have a history of"
Ward now in elite company
"Cam Ward has had so much come his way at such a young age. The Carolina Hurricanes goaltender won the Stanley Cup as a rookie in 2006, claiming the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. He helped the Canes reach the Eastern Conference finals last season -- outplaying the likes of Martin Brodeur and Tim Thomas along the way -- and may well be on Team Canada when the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics are held. "It's come awfully fast and I realize how very fortunate I am," Ward said. As of Wednesday, Ward also is very financially secure. He signed a new six-year contract with the Hurricanes that will pay him an average of $6.3 million through the 2015-16 season -- a total of $37.8 million -- and"
Cam Ward gets six-year extension
"Canes goaltender Cam Ward has signed a six-year contract extension, it was learned this morning. An announcement on the details of the extension will be held at a 1 p.m. press conference at the RBC Center. No financial terms have been disclosed. A year ago, center Eric Staal signed a seven-year, $57.75 million extension with the Hurricanes."
Hurricanes Sign Ward To Six-Year, $37.8 Million Extension
"Goaltender Cam Ward has agreed to a six-year, $37.8 million extension with the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes will make it official at a news conference in Raleigh on Wednesday afternoon. Last season, Ward won 39 games in the regular season and then backstopped the Hurricanes to the Eastern Conference final before bowing out to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins."
Ward puts back problems behind him
"Cam Ward calls it more a matter of bad timing than a bad back that may become a chronic problem. Ward, the Carolina Hurricanes' starting goaltender, was hampered by a sore back in the Stanley Cup playoffs last season as the Canes were swept by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference finals. That was in late May. Then, as he prepared for Canada's Olympic orientation camp last week, it flared up again -- first back spasms, then stiffness. Ward had to sit out the first day of the camp in Calgary, Alberta, but was treated, able to return for practices and played in the Thursday scrimmage. On Monday, Ward was back at the RecZone in Raleigh, back between the pipes. He put in more"
Staal, Ward get invitations
"Canes center Eric Staal and goaltender Cam Ward have earned invitations to participate in Canada's National Men's Team orientation camp, it was announced today. The summer evaluation camp will be held Aug. 24-27 at the Saddledome in Calgary to assist in preparation for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. A total of 46 players received invites, including both of Staal's younger brothers -- defenseman Marc Staal of the New York Rangers and center Jordan Staal of the Pittsburgh Penguins."
Canes goalie Ward still giving back
"Cam Ward was back in the Carolina Hurricanes' locker room Tuesday at the RBC Center, back to make a special presentation. The Canes' goaltender presented a check for $11,860 to Special Olympics of North Carolina. Ward's "Cam's Champs" program, now in its third year, raises funds and awareness for the Special Olympics. "Today is a big day for me, to able to come here and have this presentation and see the kids and see the smiles on their faces," said Ward, who was surrounded by Special Olympics athletes during the presentation. "It continues to mean a lot to me. "It goes way back to before I was drafted and with the thought if I ever got in a position to be able to give back, it would be"
Ward's playoff run finally ends
"For the first time in his short but successful career, Carolina Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward found himself on the wrong side of the series-ending handshake line, and he gracefully congratulated Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury. He had never lost an elimination playoff game or a playoff series, but that ended Tuesday when the Penguins wrapped up a four-game sweep with a 4-1 win to clinch a spot in the Stanley Cup finals. "I just don't think they saw our 'A' game, and it's frustrating," Ward said. "For whatever reason, we weren't as sharp as we needed to be throughout the series. That's including myself." Ward saw a 1-1 tie broken late in the first period when Pittsburgh center"
